    Book Description

The Budget Deficit and National Debt analyzes and attempts to better understand the problems associated with the debt and deficit. The theme of this book parallels the Miller Center's primary focus on governance and the presidency. The president is a key actor in submitting, approving, and administrating the budget. Therefore, the study of debt and deficit is in keeping with the Miller Center's focus on governance and the presidency. The book is divided into four sections. The first section discusses the debt and deficit from a variety of political perspectives and ideological approaches. Three contributors, representing different schools of thought and professional backgrounds, provide separate frameworks for considering the budget and deficit. The first section contrasts liberal, conservative, and independent views and compares the effects of the deficit on federal and local governments. The second section provides an overview of the origins and growth of the deficit and its effect on the U.S. economy. The authors outline interaction among and competition between economic and political forces operating in the United States, and they debate the merits of deficit reduction proposals. The third section examines the economic and political ramifications of the deficit, reviewing tactical and strategic errors and their consequences. The book concludes with a discussion of the political struggle over controlling the deficit and chronicles the ambitions and rivalries of two key political figures--Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. Their dispute over the seven year balanced-budget plan had significant influence on the policies of debt and deficit.

1 out of 5 stars Lacks hard number data- a collection of differing opinions.......1999-08-10

For $48 I expected a substantial book loaded with solid information. Instead it is in narrative form, a series of opinions, speeches to a forum, congressional testimony, many opinions contradictory to one another, most with a speaker bias or selling a point of view. I felt I did not learn anything nor use it for self education nor could I use it to guide others.

3 out of 5 stars Life is Uncertain...Eat Dessert First, Review by Trish New, author.......2007-01-07

The fact is, the universal desire for living joyfully is nothing new. Poets and philosophers have long wrestled with the subject. What is new is the urgency of the desire and the feverish fervor with which people approach pleasure. The author gives examples of people who live their lives desiring some goal that they never approach and resolves it with the thought that it was not a realistic obstacle that prevented it, but the fear of the person to act on their dream. When someone cannot bring himself to change his situation, it is because the payoffs for his present behavior are greater than the payoffs for a changed behavior, or his fear of change is too great. These traits: extroversion, conformity, worry, creativity, paranoia, optimism, cautiousness are genetic and must be changed if they affect happiness in one's life. We must accept responsibility for our own happiness. Minimize anxiety and maximize unconditional giving. Pretend you only have a short time to live. When people experience terminal diseases, their quality of life increases. When the mind is ready, a teacher appears. (Zen expression)

According to the Rolling Stones hews closely to the formula set in 2000 by the publication of The Beatles Anthology. Like its predecessor, it's a beautiful coffee table tome with hundreds of gorgeous photographs, from childhood pics of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards to concert shots from the 40 Licks Tour. The text is taken from recent interviews with the band's four latter-day members (Mick, Keith, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood). Notably missing, however, is any contribution from former bassist Bill Wyman, who left the band in the early '90s and published his own history of the band in 2002, Rolling with the Stones. Where Wyman is an obsessive collector and diarist, the other Stones are more impressionistic in their memories, lending an approach to history as casual as the band's concerts are rigorously planned and staged.

The first half of the Stones story has plenty of high drama (tours through the segregated South, Brian Jones's death, Altamont), which no one seems eager to reflect on deeply. (Charlie is the only one even to mention Altamont.) The more recent years has seen a long string of ever-more-successful tours and ever-less-popular albums, interrupted only by Mick and Keith's near divorce in the '80s, plus rehab stints for Charlie and Ronnie. While The Beatles Anthology offered the surviving members' interpretations of their experiences at a distance of 30 or more years, the Stones are still living the tale they're trying to tell--and they aren't always the most self-aware narrators. Or generous: Wyman's three-decade tenure is given short shrift, but the book finds enough space for some unnecessary digs (Wyman has "tiny hands," we're told, and an "almost effeminate" style of playing).

To flesh out the band members' own recollections, the book also contains 13 essays from music-industry friends (Ahmet Ertegun, Marshall Chess), collaborators (Don Was), famous fans (Sheryl Crow, novelist Carl Hiaasen), and, yes, even the band's financial advisor for the past 33 years, Prince Rupert Lowenstein. Their views are sometimes fascinating (the unvarnished perspective of Crawdaddy Club owner Giorgio Gomelsky, the well-told stories of art bon vivant Christopher Gibbs), but just as often self-indulgent or sycophantic. Fans looking for an artfully designed volume of photos spanning the Stones' career won't be disappointed. Anyone seeking a comprehensive history of the band may want to wait for the band's definitive biography, which has attempted many times but has yet to be written. --Keith Moerer

                  Book Description

Here's the inside story: the history of the Rolling Stones - according to the Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood have come together for this remarkable project. They've also opened up their personal and band archives to include many rare and intimate images that are interwoven with the text. The book gets right to the heart of what makes the Stones the Stones, as musicians, songwriters, performers, and colleagues. They describe how their music has evolved and how it has affected and changed their lives. They also reveal, with refreshing frankness, how their own lives have helped, or hindered, their music-making. The Stones' own words - insightful, funny, poignant, surprising, and above all, completely authentic - are complemented by insider reflections from key players in their story over the years such as Ahmet Ertegun, David Bailey, and Cameron Crowe. A comprehensive reference section including discography, and chronology, studded with the Stones' personal comments on the music and memories, completes this must-read volume. Here, in their own words and images, is the life and work of a band which has played the soundtrack of our lives for the last forty years.

3 out of 5 stars Rolling Stones History Re-Written-A Whitewash.......2006-11-13

From reading this coffee-table book, a person who did not know much about the Stones could possibly conclude the following:
                  1. Bill Wyman was not in the Stones
                  2. Brian Jones made no great contributions and was a drug-addled pain in the a--.
                  3. Mick Taylor was a Stone briefly
This is a book written by the three original Stones who still play together, plus long-time member Ronnie Wood. It is written in their words and at times I found their comments to be self-serving and overly harsh of others. Wyman, the great bassist, is discussed by his rhythm-mate Charlie Watts because of his effeminate bass playing and tiny hands. Brian Jones, who WAS the Rolling Stones early on and made their music special, is dismissed for his lack of song-writing ability, his drug use, and his mental problems. Should Rolling Stones throw Stones, especially ones who live in glass houses? All of these guys were drug-addled and messed up at one point. Even if he was hard to live with, why not dwell on the many positives that the guy brought to the group? And Mick Taylor, who laid down some of the greatest lead guitar riffs in Stones history, is, like Wyman, alive and well, and yet he and Wyman were never even interviewed for this book. Why is that? Is it because this is a self-serving project aimed at boosting the stock of Rolling Stones, Incorporated, the remaining members?
The photos are excellent. Some of the commentary is interesting, especially from the usually tight-lipped Charlie Watts. The essays by outsiders that are inserted between chapters give new meaning to the term sycophantic.
Reading this as the definitive autobiography of the Stones is like reading a Soviet history textbook from the fifties, the one where all the purged heroes have been airbrushed out of the photos and written out of the index.
For a good illustrated history of the Stones, I highly recommend Bill Wyman's Rolling with the Stones. He kept great records, and he is fair-minded to all the members, past and present.
I love the Stones, but this book brought them down a notch in my pantheon of rock gods.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for the photos only.......2006-08-31

If you want this beautifully laid out coffee table book for its many excellent and in some cases previously unpublished photos, you will not be disappointed. There's a wealth of great shots here, though the emphasis is predictably on Mick, Keith, Charlie and Ronnie, in that order; there are hardly any shots at all of Bill or Brian and only a couple of Mick Taylor.

The spliced up series of interviews that make up the rest of the book, and presumably justify the "according to..." name, are uneven. Keith's excellent (if highly selective) memory and ascerbic wit are still there; Woody is as genial and upbeat as one has come to expect; Charlie is actually pretty reflective at times; but Mick's comments could have been cut in half without losing anything important. Contributions from Wyman or Taylor would have been welcome, but apparently in a book over 350 pages long there was not room for a single word. Especially in the case of Bill Wyman, a founding member putting in 25 years service, this is unforgiveable. There is virtually no, as in zero, indication of who played bass with these clowns for all those years; Darryl Jones is covered in greater detail, and is featured in at least as many photos. Sad.

There are many many good books out there on the Stones which cover, in detail, most of the important ups and downs of their often fascinating career. This is not one of them. If you want to know about the blues scene in early 60s London, it's okay. If you want to know about the tours since the 1980s, it's okay. If you want to know about much in between, it's pretty lame. I looked in vain for some word on Woody's solo albums (frankly the best Stones-related products since 1990), the New Barbarians tour, Maggie Trudeau, Altamont (!! - only Charlie has any comments at all), groupies, Allen Klein, family life on the road, changing wives and girlfriends, etc etc. The text is basically a general whitewash over anything that might be interesting. Too bad.

After each chapter there is an interview with someone associated with the band in 'some' way, and ironically a couple of these are better than most of the Stones contribitions. Most of the comments are sycophantic in nature - Sheryl Crow, Peter Wolf - but two especially stand out: Giorgio Gomelsky and Prince Rupert Lowenstein. Neither are often heard from, both had unique perspectives, and in particular Prince Rupert in very insightful and funny. Fleshing this stuff out into a chapter and ditching a couple thousand words of Mick Jagger's often dishonest and deluded puffery would have been of benefit.

                  1 out of 5 stars Bill anyone?.......2005-12-13

I would agree with most of the negative reviews this book has received so far, and history has indeed been re-written. While Mick Taylor's role in the Stones' career could not be overstated, it is Bill Wyman's virtual absence that is the most shocking. Most of the band's shots from the 70's, but especially the 80's and 90's seem to deliberately leave him out. This is insulting to any self-respecting Stones fan and quite a disappointment (although not a complete surprise). As everyone knows, Bill was an original member of the band and his career as a Stone lasted almost 40 years. The Mick'n'Keef show could never have existed without the steadfast rythm section that anchored the band throughout most of its history. Shame on the other Stones for going out their way to practically eliminate Bill Wyman from this biography. And who exactly does Mick Jagger think he is fooling when he sings about neo-cons, then proceeds to pick Ameriquest, one of the worst predatory lenders in America, as a tour sponsor? Who said the Stones aged gracefully? Get Bill's book instead.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect? No... But is it worth buying anyway? Yes.......2005-10-02

This book will inevitably draw comparisons with the Beatles Anthology, because it came out at the same time, and it is not as good as that book. But it is still the best account of the Rolling Stones career from the people that matter - the Stones themselves.
It IS rose-tinted - as you'd expect - but the wealth of information in there more than makes up for it. Plus, you've got accounts from other parties - like the guy who booked them into the Crawdaddy Club at the start of their career. The book has a wealth of those - something the Beatles book was sorely lacking.
If I have one major complaint, then it's at the pictures. There are simply not enough of them. And the ones that are included aren't all that great.

This book has got a complete history from 1948 to 1997(please note that this is only covering television because the network goes even further back to the 1920's from when it was a radio network created by the legendary William S. Paley.) It covers the most memorable news events like the Nixon-Kennedy debate, JFK's assasination, MLK's "I have a dream." speech, Vietnam, First Man on the Moon, Watergate, The Fall of the Berlin Wall, Gulf War, The Oklahoma City Bombing, Princess Diana's Wedding and Death, etc. It also covered the greatest moments in entertainment like the big "Who Shot J.R.?" mania, Rhoda's Subway ride to her own wedding, Chuckles getting killed, Murphy Brown giving birth, David Letterman joining the network, etc. Last but not least, the greatest events in sports like the Masters, the NFL, the NCAA Final Four, the Olympics, etc. I would recomend this book to any television history buff.

In this engaging memoir of television news and its unique place in history, New York Times bestselling author and Face the Nation anchor Bob Schieffer takes us behind the scenes of the Sunday morning institution that has provided a window on the most memorable events of the last half-century. With his critically acclaimed memoir This Just In, Schieffer proved himself a natural storyteller, a gifted writer able to capture the workings of television news with remarkable wit and insight. Now Schieffer focuses his keen reporter's eye on 50 years of Face the Nation's live broadcasts and the historic moments the program has captured. From its 1954 debut, an interview with Senator Joe McCarthy the day before the Senate debate that would condemn him, to the broadcast's 1957 groundbreaking interview with a candid and controversial Nikita Khrushchev; from the brilliant analysis of communism made by guest Martin Luther King Jr. to the sometimes stunning, always revealing interviews with each sitting president; from the heroic and moving coverage of the terrorist attacks of September 11 to the revolutionary coverage of the war in Iraq, Schieffer shares unforgettable anecdotes about the guests, the stories and the events captured by the venerable public affairs program. Marked by the author's candid personal observations and wise, good humor, and featuring a special companion DVD of broadcast highlights created by CBS News for this edition, Bob Schieffer's look at 50 years of Face the Nation shines an entertaining and nostalgic light on America's presidents, culture, foreign policy and domestic affairs.

Just how smart can computers get? Science journalist Julian Brown takes a hard look at the spooky world of quantum computation in Minds, Machines, and the Multiverse--and his report is optimistic. Based in large part on the groundbreaking work of David Deutsch, the book mostly sidesteps the shouting matches of the AI debate and instead explores the history of computation and quantum theory before turning to the exciting advances likely to come out of their merger. While some readers might cringe at the blithe dismissal of classical computing as a relic, Brown shows us why quantum computing is faster and more powerful, and is a good candidate for replacing its predecessor.

The author doesn't pull any mathematical punches, but injects enough humor and personalization into his writing to keep the book from crumbling to dust. Indeed, portraits of such luminaries as Deutsch and Feynman are more engaging than those found in some biographies and are enlightening on their own. But the real power and charm of Brown's prose lie in its straightforward explanation of the arcane details of the multiple-worlds theory, "qubits," and quantum logic in language any informed reader can understand. There are more questions than answers in Minds, Machines, and the Multiverse, but the questions are profoundly satisfying all by themselves. --Rob Lightner

                                Book Description

Taking readers to the cutting edge of physics, mathematics, and computer science, Julian Brown tells the dramatic story of the groundbreaking efforts to create a fundamentally new kind of computer that would be astronomically more powerful than today's machines. In 1998, a team of researchers announced they had produced the world's first quantum computer in a cup of chloroform. In fascinating, fully accessible detail, Brown explains the ideas that led up to this accomplishment and explores the mind-stretching implications of this leap into the bizarre world of quantum physics. The Quest for the Quantum Computer is a riveting look at what promises to be one of the most important scientific and technological ideas of the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars nice rundown of quatum computing.......2006-03-14

This book is both a good introduction to quatum computing, and quantum mechanics in general. The only knock against this book, is that the author sometimes gets confused as to who his audience is. This book is on the one hand written in a 'popular' style (eg, "Brief History of Time"), but is also very challenging and techincal. I'd say the intended audience people have a strong background in computer science. Without any technical background, you'll get lost very early on, as your eyes glaze over reading his descriptions of public-key cryptography, and diagrams of quantum algorithms (complete with reversible controlled-NOT gates). A working knowledge of logic and discrete math will help a lot here. Not a simple book to digest, but because it's written in the 'popular' style, it is immensely enjoyable and satisfying, *if* you're interested in the topic, and have the proper background to absorb it.

4 out of 5 stars The best overview of Quantum Computing I've seen..........2003-07-31

In The Quest for the Quantum Computer, Julian Brown takes a look at the emerging field of Quantum Computing, a field that could potentially revolutionize many fields of computing and far-edge technology, such as cryptography, information theory, higher mathematics, and nanotechnology.

So what is a Quantum Computer, anyway?

A Quantum computer, in Brown's term (derived from the work of David Deutsch and Richard Feynman), is a computer based on an atom-scale architecture that, rather than using standard digital logic gates, uses logic gates based on "qubits", or quantum bits, that can carry a bit with a value of 1, 0, or any position that could theoretically exist in between. Such a computer could be used to process massive matrices of information in paralell, and solve mathematical problems previously thought impossible to answer.

                                Still following?

If not, the book isn't for you. It's quite dense, and filled with logical and mathematical jargon- it was clearly intended to be a "popular" book for a select audience- people with physics, engineering, mathematics, and computer science backgrounds. But if you're interested in "the new physics", on-the-edge computing, or future technologies in general, pick this book up.

                                5 out of 5 stars Almost perfect.......2002-11-24

This is the book I recommend to all my technical friends who are wondering what quantum computing is about. Brown writes with astonishing lucidity and an intense focus on what he's trying to communicate. If this book has a flaw, it's that I think it gives Deutsch and the many-universes interpretation of QM a bit too much airtime. Deutsch's views are well-presented in many other places and it dilutes this book somewhat to spend so much time on him when it really isn't necessary.

I don't understand the review that said this book wasn't technical enough. Yes, it's not a textbook for learning how to write quantum algorithms. But it does have detailed quantum circuit diagrams for a number of useful or interesting ones. When I read this book I finally saw enough of the details to "get it". I launched from this directly into the scientific literature without getting too terribly lost.

I would recommend this book over Milburn's "The Feynman Processor". Milburn knows his material but he tends to wander a lot. His book is OK and useful, but this one is better. I'd put it in the same class as Gleick's "Chaos".

2 out of 5 stars Could be interesting, but WAY over my head . . ........2002-11-01

The idea of a quantum computer is quite fascinating. Since a colleague of mine studied quantum computing at Oxford, I thought I might read up on the subject. My expectations were that "The Quest" would be something that would get the lay reader up to speed. I don't mind being stretched a bit (I have a Ph.D. in chemical engineering), but the book was just way too over the top for any not intimately familiar with quantum physics. The book contains a lot of interesting information, but it is sandwiched between some very difficult concepts and nomenclature. Remember, "know your audience . . ."
