America's debt-$5.2 trillion in 1996-is serious business. Although contemporary press coverage hovers over the story of annual budgets and the associated deficits (and rare surpluses), not much attention is given to the overall national debt and even less to the interest spent serving it. "It's like worrying about the five dollars you borrowed last week and ignoring the mortgage you can't afford," says the author. And federal politicians are generally as impotent to control the debt as they are uninformed about its nature. After tracing the fluctuations in the finances of the country from its beginning until 1940, the administrations of the next 11 presidents-Roosevelt through Clinton-and the annual budget deficits and the interest expenses that fed the national debt are examined in detail. The startup debt of each administration is shown in detail, then restated in 1983 and 1995 dollars. The change in debt through the end of the administration is then analyzed as to what areas of government incurred overspending and how much was overspent. Also discussed are major events or situations, foreign and domestic, that affected fiscal policies and fueled the urge to overspend.

Violence, and women's fear of it, limits women's choices in virtually all spheres of their lives. It has long-term, as well as short-term, consequences on women's physical and emotional well-being. It detrimentally affects women's ability to gain an education, earn a livelihood, develop human relationships, and participate in public activities, including development programs. Yet development organizations have been generally slow to realize the centrality of the issue to their work. By addressing violence against women, development workers go to the heart of how members of communities relate to one another and how they are able to shape their own lives.
The first section of the book examines the many different definitions of violence against women, and offers theories about why it happens in all societies across the world. It discusses the current momentum around the issue, and asks why development organizations have been slow to take up the struggle to end violence against women.
The second section focuses on strategies to counter violence against women and support the survivors. Case studies come from times of peace and times of armed conflict. Sections suggest strategies for transforming attitudes and beliefs in different societies that condone such violence; for supporting individual survivors; and to ensure that governments and NGOs fulfill their duty to protect women.

British Invasion - Who are those people?.......2007-01-27

While the majority of the world saw February 9, 1964 as the start of the so-called British Invasion, the reality was that British bands had been around for several years before that date. Only handful of these bands are remembered even by devotees of the genre, whether on this side of the Atlantic or the other. Many were at best "one-hot wonders." Others came and went like a cool afternoon breeze leaving barely a trace of their passage. In some cases, groups disbanded - after being fully succesful, slightly successful or complete failures - to have their memebers gain worldwide acclaim later on.

British Beat: Then, Now And Rare 1960-1969 by Terry Rawling tracks the overwhelming majority of these bands through their lives during the critical first nine years. He describes the band's origins, their activities during the period under study and their demise and/or current status.

While the coverage could be considered superficial, it is far from that for those interested in the music of the British Invasion period who can and should use it as a guidebook for more in depth study.

One final truly touching thing about the book is found on the inside back cover. Author Rawling shows several score photos of members of some of bands as they appeared in recent times. The images are a fitting close to the period and to this very information and entertaining volume.

books I own on the british invasion of the sixties!!! Loads and loads of pictures of popular and obscure bands. Anywhere from the beatles, stones, kinks to the creation, the action, johns children!!! Great photographs!! A must if you're into sixties british music!!!!

In Britain during the 1960s there was a massive cultural upheaval, that was spurred by American rhythm and blues imported albums and singles. Prompted by the huge success of the Beatles and the rich youth culture, many of kids took up guitars, basses, drums, organs, harmonicas etc and formed rock and roll combos across the Isles. Most of these bands never saw the inside of a recording studio, however, many more of them were picked up by major record labels due to the success of the Beatles, the Stones and other English acts. Out of the few that had recording contracts even fewer had hits in their homeland, and fewer still had hits stateside. This book covers them all. Through evident exhaustive research the author chrolnicles in encyclodia form the histories and not so histories of many English bands, many of whom most, at least American readers, are not familiar with. Also with a virtual treasure trove of rare pictures, this book can serve as a complete study of a time when creativity was alive and thriving in music, fasion, and thought. I recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the British Invasion genre of music, as well as to anyone who wants to broaden their knowledge of rock and popular music. The confession of the American Idol is filled with useful information for the beginner in the music industry. The musician, the song writer, the producer , they are all going to find all the information they need for a successful launch in the music industry. The advice of this experienced man may be considered priceless, the producer has had a lot of experience in the business and what he says may be golden. The book has an easy structure with easy to read fragments and will help propel you to stardom.

Entertaining, but not insightful........2006-05-16

This book seems to exist for the sole purpose of making Jackson some cash. While it doesnt contain any actual advice for obtaining stardom, it is entertaining to read. If you want an actual guide on breaking in to the industry, do check out "The Music Business: How YOU can make $500,000 "or more" a year in the music industry by Doing it Yourself!" by Ty Cohen.

Good book for aspiring singers.......2004-09-13

I recall that this book came out several months back, but I never got it. Randy Jackson's book is much better than Simon Cowell's book. He even talks to experts, even agents, producers, record company people, two American Idol finalists and now artists, and songwriters. Would have liked it if he interviewed an already successful multi-platinum selling artist like Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Usher or Jay-Z, but he could only get those who were available. He does overdo the "dawg" thing a little too much in the book, but that's his persona. A lot of my music collection consists of albums that Randy performed on, and for that alone he is a true talent in the best word. This is a long-overdue, much needed book for aspiring singers out there. To those people, don't be surprised if I hear your first album on an open lonely interstate highway and moving to the melodies, rhythms, beats, and sounds of it. And you will credit Randy's book for getting you out there in the business. Randy's book is so well written.

Randy Jackson is the most annoying person on TV. While Simon is entertaining and Paula is cute, Randy is a complete buffoon. This book was written with one thing on his mind... money. This book has no inside info on the entertainment industry and has no insight for those seeking fame and fortune as entertainers. Instead what we have is an egotistical jerk who brags about his success while never admitting he doesn't do anything. If you admire a man who helped bring us the likes of Mariah Carey and NSYNC, go ahead and waste your money because you're an idiot too.

THE BARK IS BIGGER THAN THE BITE.......2004-03-23

I have tremendous respect for Randy Jackson. I've met him and he's one of the most genuine guys you could ever talk to in the music business. He's affable, smart, and an unlikely author.

His book will appeal to, and have the greatest use by teenagers. It's simple, conversational tone will appeal to music artists in general who like easy to read material.

Of particular interest (and what I felt are the highlights of the book) are the interviews that Randy conducts with American Idol winner, Ruben Studdard and various top notch industry professionals.

This book is NOT about becoming a superstar; so don't expect to have a road map to superstardom after you read this book, but you will have a much greater appreciation of the depth and experience of Randy Jackson.

I would like to return this book. It is useless to me. There is a much better book on the market it is called "Learning Mastercam Mill Step by Step" by J. Valentino and some other guy. I wish I found this book first. Later...

What do you get when an unsuccessful Catia programmer, an automechanic and a carpenter desire to write a book on how to use Mastercam? A a caricature not a book. Advice to the authors: rotate tires, install sheetrock, clean snow, anything but write books. You can be usefull to the society.

I've used the training manuals that came with the software and
I am still trying to figure out what this book is offering for the price. I could not find a clear explaination on how to even
lay down a line or even edit geometry and toolpaths when routine
design changes occur. I felt very limited reading this text.
I found errors in the text. The kind of key productivity methods used by real mastercam operators using the software are missing. If I were having a meal this book would be a lite snack.

This booklet is missing the target.......2004-03-19

This booklet misses a lot of the knowledge required to effectively use Mastercam V9. Also, there are many blatant errors, not only in grammer, spelling, and graphic examples, but especially in the learning examples. A lot of your time will be wasted trying to follow the books instructions for they are inaccurate. Best to look for a better book, one with some intelligence behind it, to come along.
It is evident that this booklet was written by an inexperienced authors, and was not proof-read or checked for accuracy.
