Book Description
In Labors Appropriate to Their Sex Elizabeth Quay Hutchison addresses the plight of working women in early twentieth-century Chile, when the growth of urban manufacturing was transforming the contours of women’s wage work and stimulating significant public debate, new legislation, educational reform, and social movements directed at women workers. Challenging earlier interpretations of women’s economic role in Chile’s industrial growth, which took at face value census figures showing a dramatic decline in women’s industrial work after 1907, Hutchison shows how the spread of industrial sweatshops and changing definitions of employment in the census combined to make female labor disappear from census records at the same time that it was in fact burgeoning in urban areas.
In addition to population and industrial censuses, Hutchison culls published and archival sources to illuminate such misconceptions and to reveal how women’s paid labor became a locus of anxiety for a society confronting social problems—both real and imagined—that were linked to industrialization and modernization. The limited options of working women were viewed by politicians, elite women, industrialists, and labor organizers as indicative of a society in crisis, she claims, yet their struggles were also viewed as the potential springboard for reform. Labors Appropriate to Their Sex thus demonstrates how changing norms concerning gender and work were central factors in conditioning the behavior of both male and female workers, relations between capital and labor, and political change and reform in Chile.
This study will be rewarding for those whose interests lie in labor, gender, or Latin American studies; as well as for those concerned with the histories of early feminism, working-class women, and sexual discrimination in Latin America.

Hole in none.......2005-08-10
I'm giving this book one star because there's no option for zero. While I could go on about how ridiculous the "jokes" are, some things just speak for themselves.
Here's an example:
"What's the quickest way to beat my brother-in-law at golf?"
"Give him a book on how to play."
or how about this gem:
"How can I improve on 36 holes of golf a week, roughly speaking?"
"Stop cursing."
As if this level of what is being passed off as "humor" isn't bad enough, near the end of the book we are treated to another of comparable "quality" only this time the characters in the joke speak German. (translation provided at bottom of joke) There's no rhyme or reason for this nonsense other than that the joke (which other than the dialog is written in English) takes place in Germany. If this was so important to the writer, why not set the joke in an English speaking country and spare the reader the extra effort needed to elicit this particular groan?
I feel bad putting down a book this much, but I'd feel worse about the person who shells out the money for this book only to be sorely disappointed.
Just Try and Laugh at This.......2005-07-25
I bought this book at a used book store for $2 and feel completely ripped off! I have been an avid golfer for 35 years and love golf humor. There is no golf humor here! I read the entire book and never laughed, or even smiled, once. Absolutely pathetic!
Very funny!.......2000-05-28
While sometimes the humor was stale most oof the time it will keep you laughing

il y a presque tout mais trop peu sur chacun des instruments décrits. pas de couleurs et on trouve plus souvent l'intéret financier que l'intéret technique.
thank you helena.......2000-10-26
I bought the book a few years ago not knowing much about these instruments, and I must say it would be a pleasure just to read even if I should never find one, however, the above review from Helena,AR put me on a search for the instrument in the review and even though I never found the lady I can't believe the instrument I did find. Now all I need is a book that tells how to restore it. thank you helena
WE NOW KNOW WHAT IT IS!.......1999-10-31
Just imagine having something around for years and not knowing what it is! My sister, Sadie, and I have had this "thing" in the back room of our late father's ice cream parlor for years. We knew that it was musical but not much else. With its pretty stained glass windows and mechanical bird on top, it was just too nice to junk! In 1952 we converted the ice cream parlor to living quarters. I guess we just kept everything for memory sake. As retired seniors with not much to do, we recently got "on-line" and Sadie thought it would be a good idea to see if we could find a book which would tell us what our music "thing" was. We bought the Encyclopedia of Automatic Musical Instruments. We now know we have a Style 12 Wurlitzer PianOrchestra! Thank you Amazon!
Book Description
United We Stand collects more than 100 of the most striking covers from the patriotic campaign of the summer of 1942. The United We Stand slogan developed as a result of the response to Pearl Harbor and was used in July of 1942 on over 300 magazines. Published in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution to complement a travelling exhibition of the covers, the book also includes a short introduction on how the campaign began and a selection of patriotic quotations from the magazines themselves. Honoring patriotic spirit and pride, these images remain a moving tribute to a nation and its people standing together. A portion of the proceeds from sales of this book are being donated to The Red Cross in support of relief efforts in New York and Washington D.C.

Fly the Flag........2002-02-10
After the attack on Pear Harbor, Paul MacNamara, a PR man for Hearst magazines, had a clever idea. On July four of 1942 why not get the Nation's major magazines and comics to show their patriotism (and sell more copies) by printing Old Glory on their covers. Nearly three hundred titles joined in and just over a hundred of them are shown in this lovely book.
The covers are from the author's collection and it is a pity that there are not more shown. Considering that most of the covers show a flag flying in the wind it is interesting to see how the magazine's designers handled the cover layout, some titles (Modern Industry page 86) used a flat design flag and still produced an eye-catching cover.
I would not normally mention cutting up a book but many of the covers that have a dominant flag look so nice that they would really look good mounted on a colored background and framed. They are mostly four by five inches. Maybe something to do for this years July four!

Old Glory in WWII.......2001-12-22
This little book reviews many covers of major US magazines from July 1942 which carried the US flag celebrating the first Independence Day after Pearl Harbor. The patriotism of that wartime era is eerily reminiscent of the wave of patriotism reaching across our Nation after 11 September. I would hope that in July 2002 we will see a similar expression of national unity. God bless America!

Perhaps the best ever............2004-04-06
Original, witty, poetic. Two of Doctor Who's best authors teaming up to tell a simple horror story (well, maybe not that simple) from two different perspectives. I read this in a few hours and was so mad when it was done. And was even more mad that Paul McGann wasn't starring in the DVD release of this!!!
Mr. Lane & Mr. Richards worked terribly hard to achieve the local and historical flavor of the piece but it is more than evident in the content that they had fun doing it. And MAN, did I have fun reading it. Scary in some places, laugh out loud funny in others. Some good BBC books before this one, some bad ones, but I must say this was arguably the first GREAT ONE. The Talons of Weng-Chiang of the 8th Doctor.
The only "negative" I can say is that one should read some 8th Doctor/Fitz novels before this one to really get attached to their interplay. There's some "techno-babbly" stuff about Compassion being a TARDIS and yadda-yadda-yadda, but this is a character driven story, enjoyable for all Doctor Who fans. Highest possible recommendation.
Skull Duggery!!!!!.......2002-04-02
After suffering from an Artron energy inhibiting device Compassion is near death and must take refuge in someone else's body to recuperate whilst the Doctor has lost the ability to regenerate while the inhibitor is active. They are thrust into a situation involving an experiment gone wrong, the walking dead and a timelord agent that has lain in wait for the Doctor to arrive for 100 years. Set in 1898 the novel is told from two different accounts written in a diary/report format from an inspector from Scotland Yard and a Solicitor. This format of writing has given the book an incredible amount of realism with the aspect of the time period it is set in and the style of writing is very reminiscent of Bram Stoker's Dracula. Plus the scenes involving being stalked by the living dead are incredibly reminiscent of Michael Myers from the Halloween series - SPOOKY!!! This is definitely in the top ten of Dr. Who novels written to date. WELL RECOMMENDED!!!
Excellence.......2001-10-23
BANQUO LEGACY is fantastic. It's dripping with atmosphere, it has a cracking plot, and it feels miles away from being "just another runaround". This is such a relief after so many forgettable books (there's been so many of them before this, that I can't even remember when the last memorable book was) to have something that's just flat-out good.
The book is split into two memoirs. One is written by a solicitor who is being paid to be an impartial witness to a scientific experiment. The other is written by a police inspector who is called to the scene after everything goes fatally wrong. Set in the 19th Century, the story feels very much at home in the culture of the original mad scientists and the stories of the intellectuals of the time. The real authors of the book, Andy Lane and Justin Richards, set the stage wonderfully, with every detail fitting perfectly into the Victorian mystery novel that they've created.
There are some wonderful themes running through this book; the most satisfying and well executed would be the reflections upon seeing an objective reality from two differing, subjective standpoints. This is most obvious in the narrative, as the overall story is told from the point of view of two different people. This leads to a handful of overlapping scenes where certain details and events are described twice with slight differences in their recollection; it's an effect that's pulled off very nicely. This theme also extends into the experiment that they are observing, which is based upon the placing of thoughts and experiences from one mind directly into another. It crops up in one or two other places (most notable the sections involving Compassion) and is quite rewarding to the reader once one figures out what is going on.
The only real problems with this book are that the authors were so skillful at creating a late 19th Century atmosphere that the references to Time Lords, TARDISes and other anachronisms seem very much out of place. Perhaps there would have been a better way to incorporate these elements into the story without their metaphorical seams showing. Despite these minor details, this is quite an enjoyable book and comes as a breath of fresh air. Don't skip this one.
A change of pace for the 8th Doctor.......2001-06-11
While not as dense and complicated as lots of the other Doctor Who books, this is an interesting mystery set in the late 19th century which begins with Compassion pulling off something that is quite strange and would not be something you'd expect a TARDIS to be able to do! Then she, along with the Doctor and Fitz, are forced to take refuge at Banquo Manor, posing as guests who are scheduled to arrive to witness a scientific demonstration. As the drama at Banquo Manor unfolds, things go from dark to horrific. The most interesting aspect of this story is that it is told from the viewpoints of two of the guests at Banquo, alternating between them from chapter to chapter. We see some events described twice, from two different points of view, and both are ultimately befuddled by the Doctor's involvement.
Not that good.......2001-05-25
"The Banquo Legacy" suffers by obviously being a non-Doctor Who novel with Doctor Who grafted onto it. A typical, almost cliched gothic mystery is given a few SF motifs, and a very trite explanation is given for the Doctor and Fitz's involvement (Compassion is almost a non-player).
Not the worst EDA, but it does manage to mark time until the next novel, the end of the Faction Paradox cycle.

Book Description
Practical guidelines for an effective implementation of software development processes
Designed to ensure effective software development processes, the Capability Maturity Model (CMM)--North America's leading standard for software development--requires companies to complete five steps, or levels, in the development process. But while it is widely adopted by Fortune 500 companies, many others get stuck at the initial planning stage. Focusing on Levels 2 and 3 of the CMM, this book helps readers to get over the hurdle of the two most problematic areas in this process--the project management and software development steps. It offers clear, step-by-step guidance on how to establish basic project management processes to track costs, schedules, and functionality; how to document, standardize, and integrate software processes; and how to improve software quality.
Customer Reviews:
could do better.......2006-02-03
I preferred the last few chapters of Humphrey's Managing the Software Process regards describing how CMM links to reality. I am still looking for a good book on CMM/CMMi, as the general quality of the descriptions in such books seams low. There is a real lack of linking the theory back to reality.
I have given it 3 stars because the book gives a good covering of the theory and is a little less dry than the original CMM book.
Information-packed reference that lives up to its title.......2005-03-18
This book provides a very thorough treatment of all the Key Process Areas (KPA's), the organizational goals, structures, activities, policies, and training that you will need to address in order to attain CMM levels 2 and 3. In addition, an appendix provides a valuable level-2 preassessment questionnaire (150+ questions) that you can use to gauge your readiness for a real appraisal. For people who may be wondering about getting into the CMM but have never actually been exposed to this sort of stuff before, this questionnaire alone should be worth the price of the book. It is certain to be a major eye-opener in terms of conveying the CMM's almost daunting reach into so many different factors that it identifies with software process improvement. (And that's just level 2!)
The SEI's (Software Engineering Institute) Capability Maturity Model "Guidelines" book has been around for many years, and is considered the definitive guide (in book-form) for the CMM. Nevertheless that book will tell you only what's expected of you, but leave you hanging when it comes to how you actually do it. Dr. Persse on the other hand fills in a wealth of much-needed detail. The SEI may have given us the "business requirements", but Persse provides the "detailed development spec".
Although I would definitely recommend this book, I still believe it could have been greatly enhanced by a few well-placed visuals. For example, having now finished reading through the seven KPA's of level 3, I can visualize the Training KPA as a parallel KPA whose purpose is to educate the organization about the other six. Of these other six KPA's, Organization Process Focus establishes the prerequisite foundation for Organization Process Definition which, in turn, establishes the prerequisite foundation for the remaining four KPA's. Although this relationship unfolds as you read the text, I found myself going back and re-reading sections in order to clarify that image in my mind. A simple introductory visual would have allowed me to nail this important relationship early on.
Visuals notwithstanding, I believe the book deserves five stars for delivering exactly what its title advertises (keyword "implementing"), and for doing so with a thorough, clear, and well-organized presentation.

thank you

good book for process engineers.......2003-02-20
This is a pretty interesting book as it has step by step instructions and guidelines for implementing the CMM up to level 3. If your organization is in a chaotic mode, here is a good place to start to see what to fix first. Also includes a set of example policies and procedures which can be modified to fit your needs.
Clear roadmap to levels 2 and 3.......2002-06-24
The author of this excellent book give a realistic roadmap to achieving CMM levels 2 and 3, which are major hurdles in capability maturity, especially level 2 from a culture-shock point of view.
What makes this book realistic is the way you're lead through the important steps, with a complete focus on what it takes instead of theory. The book starts off with an obligatory overview of the CMM, but quickly segues into the steps needed to attain level 2 (repeatable), which are creating the structures, processes, training program and policies. While each of these are important, I especially like the inclusion of policies because they are necessary to codify goals and are frequently overlooked. This section also includes subcontractor management, which is important for aligning those with whom you are using on projects with your own organizational capabilities. This makes sense because if your organization is repeatable and your subcontractor(s) aren't, then you either need to go shopping for more compatible subcontractors, or get dragged back into ad hoc approaches.
The same approach to graduating to level 3 is used, with slight changes. In the section that covers level 3 the first topic is about focusing on organizational process improvement, followed by an in-depth chapter on defining organization processes. These reflect the key changes between level 2's repeatable goals and level 3's focus on defined processes. After these are clearly and completely explained the same formula - structures, processes, training program and policies - is addressed for level 3.
Following the steps to get to levels 2 and 3, the next section is centered on implementation and assessment. This section prepares you for the assessment process itself, and offers excellent advice on how to get through it. Additional information of value is provided in appendices B (Annotated Level 2 Preassessment Questionnaire) and C (Samples of Level 2 Policies), both of which are provided in PDF format from the book's associated web site.
One key question that needs to be answered: Which is better, this book or CMM Implementation Guide: Choreographing Software Process Improvement by Kim Caputo? My opinion is that both books are equally important and both should be read because they cover two different aspects of attaining CMM levels 2 and above. This book concerns itself with the nuts and bolts of processes, where Caputo's book is more focused on organizational change. I recommend both books, and think that they nicely complement each other.
