        Book Description

The growth and persistence of government budget deficits are a cause of increasing concern in both developed and developing countries. This situation has provoked extreme responses: some economists believe that they have devastating effects, while others maintain that they have no real impact at all. br br b /b b i Budget Deficits and Economic Activity in Asia /i /b examines both of these claims in the context of the Asian economies. After testing for the feasibility of the current levels of budget deficits and therefore of the current fiscal policies, the study turns to a quantification of the effects on seigniorage, money supply, inflation, aggregate demand and interest rates. Ten countries including India, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand are studied. The author finds that budget deficits are monetized to a considerable extent, thus impairing or at least reducing the ability of the monetary authority to pursue expenditures in most of the countries covered. br br The author partially supports the widespread view that budget deficits are inflationary because they increase the money supply. He gives more emphasis to the apparent effects on interest rates, and finds these to be positive. As the processes of fiscal deregulation accelerate, interest rates seem set to become even more sensitive to the behavior of budget deficits.

          Book Description

This timely volume describes and analyzes critical aspects of the labor market and social protection in the Arab world. Its authors address the complex interrelationship that has evolved between labor, human development, and, above all, social well-being in the Middle East and North Africa region -- an interaction that is viewed against the backdrop of a globalization process that is a crucial shaping factor in national and international relations alike.

The authors examine in detail the implications for workers of the new forms of insecurity being ushered in by the globalization era. At the forefront is the issue of social protection, which of itself creates a number of dilemmas for policymakers, since formal social security gives cover to only a small percentage of the labor force. The idea of social reinsurance, which would integrate the informal sector and allow for social dialog, emerges at various levels, and there is general agreement that any such dialog, or new social contract, must include government, the private sector, and civil society.

This book is the product of the Mediterranean Development Forum, a partnership of ten Middle East and North Africa think tanks, and the World Bank Institute.

Contributors to the volume include Ali Abdel Gadir Ali, Alan Abrahart, Victor Billeh, Moez Doraid, Ibrahim A. Elbadawi, Maurice Girgis, Iqbal Kaur, Noha El-Mikawy, Valentine Moghadam, Marsha Pripstein Posusney, and Zafiris Tzannatos.

          Book Description

When British anthropologist Nigel Barley set up home among the Dowayo people in northern Cameroon, he knew how fieldwork should be conducted. Unfortunately, nobody had told the Dowayo. His compulsive, witty account of first fieldwork offers a wonderfully inspiring introduction to the real life of a cultural anthropologist doing research in a Third World area. Both touching and hilarious, Barley's unconventional story—in which he survived boredom, hostility, disaster, and illness—addresses many critical issues in anthropology and in fieldwork.

5 out of 5 stars No glamour, just the truth.......2007-09-30

Barley's account of life among the Dowayo of Cameroon is both truthful and funny. This book should be required reading for anyone considering fieldwork or for anyone who would rather be an armchair anthropologist. It clears away all the dry scholarship and objectivity of academic writing to demonstrate how it feels to do fieldwork. I also recommend The Lonely Anthropologist, a collection of similar tales, as a companion to Barley's account.

5 out of 5 stars So you want to do anthropology?.......2007-05-18

This is a budding anthropologist's account of his experience with an obscure and previously unstudied people in the Cameroons. If you thought you might want to be an anthropologist, this will either inspire you or turn you to some more comfortable calling. The innocent Englishman describes in hilarious detail his dealings with bureaucrats, missionaries, village chiefs, and rainmakers, while trying to maintain anthropological distance. You learn a little bit of anthropology from the book; you learn much more about the anthropologist. He may have embellished his story in places, but he probably didn't need to. It would make a great film, but don't wait for that. It's one of the funniest books you'll ever read.

          5 out of 5 stars Outsider.......2006-07-08

It does not follow that a good student becomes a good teacher and/or a good researcher. The author's thesis was based upon ancient, defunct communities. Seeking to do field work, he casts about for an appropriate subject. Friends and fellow academics tend to remember nothing but the good times. Ethnographic adventures are productive of a license to be a bore. Anthropology has the reek of sanctity and divine irrelevance.

The author selects the Dowayo of North Cameroon for his study. In the Cameroons there are French young people, co-operants, doing foreign service as an alternative to required military service. They speak to Africans who are not their servants, and they explore the country beyond the diplomatic compound. Since Malinowski, anthropologists have tried not to talk to missionaries. Not cultural imperialists, most of the missionaries Nigel Barley encounteres are diffident about imposing their own views. Support of the missionaries turns out to be essential to his work.

In the Cameroons there is a huge antiquated administrative system. Dealing with the bureaucracy is a daunting task. In Africa the day begins at 5:30. The Dowayo are fond of termites. They place blacksmiths in a separate group. When registering with the sous-prefet, the author explains that anthropology is his job. The Dowayo believe in reincarnation. Their chiefs are simply rich men. Barley finds an assistant, Matthieu, a French-speaking, Christian Dowayo. They settle in Kongle, a mountain Dowayo village. Mountain Dowayo, as opposed to plains Dowayo, are considered more barbarous. The Dowayo language has four tones, and sometimes the tones are blended, a glide. There are different dialects. Fulani is the trade language. After nearly a year's stay the Dowayo refer to Barley as 'our white man'

Water in Dowayoland poses a danger. There are parasitic diseases. The author learns that in order to receive more information from his informants, he must supply verbal interjections as they speak to show that he is listening and to encourage the speakers to continue. He discovers that only men know the whole of Dowayo culture. Time is not something that can be allocated in Dowayoland. Plant fertility, circumcision, and rain are linked. Barley reads trash literature, obtained from a young missionary, after seven while everyone else is asleep. He has afflictions--malaria and viral hepatitis. A new sous-prefet has been educated in France, wears a Fulani robe, and is ambitious to reform the Dowayo, to turn them into proper Frenchmen, the author thinks facetiously. The Dowayo call the new sous-prefet the black white man.

On his way home, Barley finds the pace of Rome, a stop-over, bewildering. He is victim of theft there at his hotel and has no identification, airline ticket, or money. A barman who has been in Wales as a POW calls the British Embassy for him. He enters the UK politely, without his passport, after an absence of eighteen months. The monographs of other anthropologists have become more revealing to the author after his experience abroad. The book is amusing, thought-provoking. It recounts field work absent the usual filtering employed to produce a scholarly article.

          5 out of 5 stars Hilarious.......2005-06-10

This humorous and often hilarious account of Mr. Barley's time in Africa and the reality he experienced is very insightful. It dispelled the many inner inhibitions visitors often have about a new culture . True life in rural Africa can be boring, but there are many fascinating aspects about it if we have an open and curious mind. The works of Janvier Tisi and Chinua Achebe are other good books to read.

          5 out of 5 stars Accesible anthropology.......2003-09-25

You've got to love this book. I'm an anthro type anyway, but if I wasn't this book would still be highly entertaining and a great experience.

It's about a self-deprecating British anthropologist who goes to Cameroon to do fieldwork among a little-known tribe called the Dowayo. While he's there, he encounters strange foods, a crazy old missionary, an impossible French-speaking Dowayo assistant, illness, personal injury, beer parties in the fields, paranoid Dowayo men, and a host of other things that will alternately make you wince and laugh out loud.

For anthropologists, this is an amusing look at what it's REALLY like in the field, with none of the "blood and guts" left out. For the lay reader, it's a look at what anthropologists actually do, and a highly educational one at that. If you think anthropology is all about dead white men condescending to attend a "native" ceremony now and then, this book's a kick in the head. I loved it.

              Book Description

From geeks in short pants to multiplatinum artists, Barenaked Ladies are nothing less than a phenomenon. Now, for the first time in the United States, we can read their astonishing story.

Steven, Ed, Jim, Tyler, and Kevin have two Grammy nominations under their belts, they've appeared on The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live, and their music is featured in commercials. They've even preempted the Olympics and rocked the vote on The West Wing. Their quirky, bizarre lyrics and unforgettable live performances have secured a rabidly loyal fan base across North America. They are Barenaked Ladies.

Want to know more about this Canadian quintet? It's all here, from the births of five Barenaked babies to the triumph of band member Kevin over leukemia.

Given exclusive access to the band, author Paul Myers gets inside the heads of five guys who drew on their eclectic backgrounds to generate a groundbreaking musical style.

Fun, frank, and sometimes frivolous, this is the naked truth behind Barenaked Ladies.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for new fans!.......2006-11-26

We bought the "Gordon" CD for our daughter when it was first out, but I am embarrassed to admit, I did not listen to it. But friends told us the music was appropriate for an 8 yo. I did not have a CD player in my car or at work and that was part of the problem. At any rate,we just recently saw BNL in concert in Rochester, and I was blown away by the music! I never realized how complex and different the music was. This got me wondering about the history of the band, and how they have stayed together so many years and still seem to have fun making music and entertaining. That led me to this book...and I took it out of my local library. I have to say, for a new fan, it is a great way to learn about the evolution of the band, their early years and the troubles they went through staying together. It almost reminded me of the work involved in a marriage. I would agree with the other reviewer that, at times, the author tries to be coy and it falls somewhat flat, and that is why I gave it 4 stars(I would have given it 4.5, but that's not available, but for a new fan, it's a great read. The book is on my Christmas wish list; it is something I can see reading over and over! If you are new to the band, make sure you read it!

3 out of 5 stars Paul Myers and BNL.......2005-12-10

Favorite line: "The Stunt tour was great, but so was Kevin."

              ?!

It's well worth the cost and read for any Barenaked Ladies fan, but prepare yourself for backseat reading as the story is mainly of Paul's experience with the band rather than the band's story. The first half (up to Stunt) is great, but the second half is a bit thin.

              Perfect back-of-the-toilet book.

3 out of 5 stars Paul Myers Presents BNL Featuring Paul Myers.......2003-12-30

Public Stunts, Private Stories (which was originally sold directly to fans at BNL concerts) would be an incredible biography if it weren't for the author's incessant, excessive need to insert himself into the proceedings. Paul Myers tries to emulate the anything-goes style of the band's live shows in his narrative, but falls entirely flat. He constantly uses first-person voice as he commits the sin that the Ladies are often unjustly accused of: being clever for the sake of being clever. It's a criticism I've never believed about the band, but Myers has no defense with pointless asides (such as the Willie Nelson Connection, which isn't really much of a connection at all), self-referential interviews, forced pop-culture namedropping, and mid-narrative lines like "Yes, I know I'm on thin ice with the bad puns and wordplay." More than you know, Paul. Step back and let the band's story be the star, please?

What's more, the book is not as complete as it should be for a historical account of the Barenaked Ladies' evolution as a band. There are references to Maybe You Should Drive being a traumatic experience, but no real solid evidence to suggest what the source of the tension was--Ben Mink, for instance, is not interviewed. Anybody who gave Myers a lot of face time for interviews (such as manager Terry McBride, whose interview is as chilling as it is informative) gets more attention in the book. It comes off as uneven.

And still, the grating elements are outweighed by excellent, honest quotes by the band, plenty of fun photos, amusing anecdotes, and a lovingly detailed recounting of the band's earliest days. Hearing so many of the stories straight from the band members themselves--especially when they're being embarassingly honest about their own flaws and the band's more difficult growth stages--gives this book a compelling flow. As the only decent BNL book out there, Public Stunts, Private Stories is #1 in a field of one.

The core of the material works so well that I'd love to see a revised edition in a few more albums, with Myers' extraneous influence toned down.

3 out of 5 stars Great Band, Good Book.......2003-12-23

Paul Myers' book offers a serviceable account of the history of Barenaked Ladies, from their beginnings through the making of 2000's Maroon.

What's missing is much in the way of insight from the band members. The book details their early Canadian success and struggle to build an American following before the 1998 album Stunt and its breakout single "One Week" made them stars. It touches on band member Kevin Hearn's struggle to overcome leukemia and various marriages and births.

But it doesn't explore much past the surface in any aspect. This band has been through some struggles, and the brooding melancholy that lurks in their lyrics has to come from somewhere. But the book emphasizes their clever wordplay, sense of humor and superb musicianship leaving much unanswered about what personal darknesses lead to songs like "When I Fall" or "Light Up My Room," or "Break Your Heart" or "Pinch Me."

I know there are some stories to tell, because I've read some of them in interviews with the band. Myers doesn't seem interested in offering a deeper examination of these fascinating people, and the book suffers as a result. The closest he comes is when he mentions the death of one of Ed Robertson's brothers as part of the meaning of the song "Leave" -- the way that a premature death can haunt those left behind. But even then he mentions it in passing and deals with the whole issue in one paragraph.

The other major failing is that Myers is infatuated with his own cleverness, and the text is peppered with puns and efforts to incorporate song titles into sentences. These devices might bring a smile or two used sparingly, but he seems to lack both self-restraint and a good editor.

It's a good book, and worth reading for any fan of the band, but it isn't what it could have been.

For any "I love Lucy" fan, you'll love these plays. If you're not a fan of Lucy, you'll still love it. These two episodes show why Lucille Ball is considered a legendary comedian and regardless of the fact that she's not in these episodes herself, the actors give brilliant acts.

                  From the back cover:

                  PICK A HUSBAND...

Chaz Vincent disappeared years ago on an expedition into the wildest reaches of the Amazon jungle, leaving his wife, Kelly, to wait and wonder—and finally have him declared legally dead. How was she to know he was being held hostage by a tribe of Pygmies with a talent for complicated knots? It took forever and a day for him to finally escape but he's back—and he can't wait to see her...

                  ...ANY HUSBAND!

Kelly Vincent knows she'll never forget Chaz—especially since the intrepid adventurer's memorial service was accidentally scheduled only hours after her second wedding. Stranger still, that tanned, rugged man in khakis who just walked into the funeral parlor is a dead ringer for him. But wait a minute—that is Chaz. And he looks like he's ready to sweep her off her feet all over again...

Kelly Vincent is having a busy day. She is getting married in the morning and having a memorial for her dead husband. Everything is going well until husband number one Chaz shows up at his own service. Now Kelly has a real problem she has two husband and not sure which on to choose.
"My Favorite Husband" is the frist book that I read by Pat MCCutheon and it a pretty cute book with sharp characters. It a great book that any romance fan might enjoy.

                  5 out of 5 stars Pure fun!.......2004-08-20

I loved the old Cary Grant/Irene Dunne movie about a wife who returns from the dead. I loved Pam McCutcheon's updated, role-reversal version even more. Chaz is to die for, Scott had me choking on my coffee, and Kelly -- well, the header says it all: Insanity is so much more fun the second time around. What a GREAT read!!!

4 out of 5 stars Stability or Sizzle??.......2004-06-07

This is the choice poor Kelly is asked to make in this fabulous novel by McCucheon. As an avid reader of romance novels, I have to say this is one of the best I have read in a while. It is a fast-paced, no brainer, that keeps you laughing the entire way through. Though I loved the entire cast, my favorite has to be Scott, the devilish brother always there to give Kelly both advice and a headache. I am definitely looking forward to his story in January.

Until then, go out and read this book. And if you already have, I'd also suggest you add Body Check and Say No To Joe? to your reading list.

5 out of 5 stars ~ So Much Fun ~.......2004-05-19

I had so much fun reading this book, I wanted a laugh out loud kind of book, and this book made me laugh, I loved all the characters they were funny in there own way. What can I say about Chaz, the first husband, you could not help but to root for him to win Kelly's heart, then you kind of feel sorry for Spencer because he is not a bad guy. Kelly's brother Scott was so funny he had me laughing the most, I am so glad that he will have his own story and I cannot wait to read it and see what has become of him.

                  Happy Reading
                  Lisa

                  5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!.......2004-04-26

Kelly is between a rock and a hard place. Getting married to Spencer the same day as the memorial for her dead husband Chaz (who just so happens to show up alive and well) was too funny! The various scenes and plot twists were enjoyable and amusing. The only caution I have is that it's hard to take this book out in public and read: I'd begin laughing and couldn't stop and made a spectacle of myself!!! I would highly recommend this book.

Fans of Mary Kay Andrews, Fannie Flagg, and the Sweet Potato Queens won't miss this sensational novel from the author of Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash. Picking up where they left off, Debbie Sue Overstreet and her pal, Edwina, are running the Styling Station and their detective agency the Domestic Equalizers. For them, there's no crime or heartbreak that a little hairspray and a little poking around can't solve! But when Paige McBride comes to town-a little bit spoiled and a whole lot rich the three soon find themselves knee deep in the muck of a horse-thievin' and husband-cheatin' escapade that sets the town of Saltlick, TX, on its ear. By the end, hair will be styled, casseroles will burn, and creeps will be brought to justice if Equalizers have their way. And love will, of course, conquer all.

                      4 out of 5 stars Much Fun!!!.......2006-06-03

Paige McBride has always been a pampered child. Daddy McBride has raised Paige in a lifestyle she has found success in, until one day Daddy tells her she is on her own. Needless to say, Paige has no idea what to do or how to get a job. Paige spent six years stumbling from colege to college but never came away with a college degree. Daddy steps in for one of the final times and helps Paige find a job she could only dream of having. She is offered a job as an assistant to a horse cutter. The catch is she has to move to a town, Salt Lick, Texas, in the middle of nowhere.

Spur Atwater finds himself nearly penniless and crossing his fingers and hoping his loan comes through so he can fulfill his dream of being a vet. New to Salt Lick, Texas as well, being single and sexy poses for an interesting welcome.

Paige meets 2 interesting ladies, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwinda Perkins-Martin, near her first day in town and they become fast friends. Debbie Sue and Edwina, hair dressers by day, private investigators by night, find themselves embroiled in a plan to thrwart a horse stealing ring. Paige is enlisted in the plan, but her relationship with Spur hangs in the balance. Can their love survive her attempts to help her friends and save the horses which are so dear to her?

Paige and Spur get themselves entangled with each other in more ways than one throughout this fun read.

Add in some interesting Texas characters, misunderstandings, good food, and a lock in in a convenience store cooler and you have a hillarious story which reads quickly and leaves you wanting more when the story ends.

I initially got this book because the title intrigued me but I found this book to be an great read. I read through it so fast I was surprised when it was over. I will look for her first book.

Maybe you got Access as part of Microsoft Office and wonder what it can do for you and your household; maybe you're a small business manager and don't have a techie on staff to train the office in Microsoft Access. Regardless, you want to quickly get your feet wet--but not get in over your head--and Access 2003 for Starters: The Missing Manual is the book to make it happen.

Far more than a skimpy introduction but much less daunting than a weighty tech book, Access 2003 for Starters: The Missing Manual demystifies databases and explains how to design and create them with ease. It delivers everything you need--and nothing you don't--to use Access right away. It's your expert guide to the Access features that are most vital and most useful, and it's your trusted advisor on the more in-depth features that are best saved for developers and programmers.

Access is sophisticated and powerful enough for professional developers but easy and practical enough for everyday users like you. This Missing Manual explains all the major features of Access 2003, including designing and creating databases, organizing and filtering information, and generating effective forms and reports.

Bestselling authors, database designers, and programmers Scott Palmer, Ph.D., and Kate Chase are your guides for putting the world's most popular desktop data management program to work. Their clear explanations, step-by-step instructions, plenty of illustrations, and timesaving advice help you get up to speed quickly and painlessly.

Whether you're just starting out or you know you've been avoiding aspects of the program and missing out on much of what it can do, this friendly, witty book will gently immerse you in Microsoft Access. Keep it handy, as you'll undoubtedly refer to it again and again.

If you are new to Access and want to learn how to do things, this book is very helpful. If you are an experienced user and want to become an expert, this book may not have everything you need. We use this manual in conjunction with the Video Professor and between the two, we are now very comfortable with Access.

I own a Network Consulting firm which handles IT for Small to Medium businesses. That said, I know zilch about Microsoft Access. Recently a client asked I provide them with a simple inventory managment database. While I actually set them up with an out of box solution, I figured I should learn Access to possibly do our own development.

This book is really fantastic. I own plenty of tech books; some good, and some not so good. I rated this book high for the two things it does really well:

                              1. It shows you a nice view of what you *can* do in terms of options at each stage of building/working with a database, and explains them.

                              2. It applies the information with easy to follow, yet not stupidly simple projects.

I went through 130 pages today alone and if the wife wasn't bugging me to death, would probably knock out a chapter or two more before bed.

Great book. The title explains it all.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way To Learn Access.......2005-12-30

The Pogue Press line does it again!! When I looked down at the retail price for this book I couldn't believe my eyes. If you are new to Microsoft Access and want to ramp up quickly on how to use this exciting application, you would be hard-pressed to find a better bargain to get up to speed in no time.

I usually write longer reviews, but for the price that this book is listed at, this would inefficient and a waste of time. If you want to learn how to use Access 2003, stop reading and pick up this book today!!

                              ***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
