From the supplier: Federal funds for research and development are projected to decrease under the balanced budget agreement. The plan will reduce defense R&D by 18% and nondefense discretionary spending by 6%. Of the nondefense spending categories, only the Advanced Technology Program of the Commerce Dept's National Institute of Standards and Technology has been allotted an increase. On the other hand, funds for programs for science, space and technology by agencies, such as NASA and National Science Foundation, have been set at reduced levels. Also, budgets for the Health Dept's National Institutes of Health (NIH) and non-NIH programs would be less than FY1997 levels.

In Making Sure We Are True to Our Founders, Morris describes the Association's contributions to judicial selection and discipline, lawyer ethics, federal and state laws and rules, the responsible governance of New York City, and international human rights. The extraordinary role of the Association in prodding New York's large law firms to hire, retain, and promote minority attorneys, and its activities in aiding the homeless, those ill with AIDS, immigrants, and the elderly, are also described.

                          Book Description

At the beginning of each new lesson, Will Bowers faces the blank stares of students in his community college English class. These are students who live amid the suburban sprawl of strip malls and strip clubs, who struggle with night jobs and their own personal catastrophes. Impressing upon them the importance of a nineteenth-century poet named Emily Dickinson can seem like a nearly insurmountable challenge. Yet Bowers leaps at the opportunity to bring a little poetry into the lives of his students. He shows them Dickinson's picture. He discusses her family and her year at seminary. He sees a glimmer of understanding. But when discussing her choice to be a recluse, the exchange breaks down, and one student declares, "She sounds like another freak. Seems like all we read in here is freaks."

Written in direct, funny, and unflinching prose, All We Read Is Freaks is an extraordinary account of life and learning, and a teacher's passion for both.

I don't read much, but after growing up in South Carolina and visiting Florida many times, I found this book to be quite hilarious. Unless you are a jackass, you will love this book. My wife is a teacher and this stuff happens to her all the time (except her students are even wilder-like from animal house or something-except in high school).

                          High recommended!

                          Book Description

From 1968 to 1971 Bill Graham's Fillmore East in New York City was the East coast Mecca for the music that shaped a generation. Not only that: thanks to a visionary technical staff and unsurpassed psychedelic light shows, the Fillmore East stage was the place where rock music became rock theater. Now available in paperback, the highly acclaimed Live at the Fillmore East tells the story of its heyday with more than 200 black and white behind-the-scenes photographs and exclusive interviews. Included here are photos of the Who's premiere of Tommy in 1969; John and Yoko's surprise encore to a Frank Zappa concert; the jam between the Allman Brothers, the Grateful Dead, and Mick Fleetwood in 1970; Janis Joplin's first performance after singing with CBS records; Jimi Hendrix's New Year's Eve concerts; Van Morrison during the first-ever television taping of a rock concert in 1970; and many other defining moments of rock history "Amalie R. Rothschild's pictures bring back the entire Fillmore East experience in vivid detail. Rock and Roll was a baby back then and Bill Graham was it's midwife - he birthed the modern version of a rock and roll concert." -- Mickey Hart

Kind of essential lookback to something we'll never see again. All the messiness, sloppiness & amateurism that had me and my pals going all the time to the FE (Friday Night Late Show Only please!). One of few worthwhile rock books.

I love this book. I frequented the Fillmore East 18 times between 1970 until it closed in June of 71. This book brought back so many memories. The Fillmore East was without a doubt the greatest place to see and hear a concert and I miss it. I am glad that I was able to be a part of the Fillmore East - even got to speak to Bill Graham the night of the last public concert. I am very glad this book was put together and anyone who was there will enjoy it. I sure do miss those days - Thanks Amalie!!! Got anymore tidbits - any chance of a Fillmore East Late Show edition?

The Fillmore East was not only the Mecca of Rock Music in the late sixties and early seventies, it was also the epicenter of all Rock Music, as well as jazz and performance art from the era. Live at the Fillmore East captures the ambience of the era by capturing not only the acts performing on stage, but the audience's exuberance and the backstage scene in wonderful photography by Amalie R. Rothschild. I'd highly recommend this book to all music lovers, like myself, who have an appreciation for the music of Jimi Hendrix, Janis, The Who, The Grateful Dead (many great pictures of the band on stage), Miles Davis, etc.
A special portion of the book is dedicated to the light shows that were so valuable in those days in highlighting the music as it was being performed. If you ever attended a show at the Fillmore East, this book is a must! If you know the reputation of Bill Graham and the Fillmore East and never attended a show there: this book is a must also! Great forward by Mickey Hart and great text by the author. Buy this book and treasure it for the testament of a great, historical era in music.

This is a great book for those wanting to learn more about "Dark Shadows", whether the show is new to you or you're rediscovering it after years of last seeing it. Behind-the-scenes information, a short synopsis for each episode, and memories of the other cast members by the author. Kathryn Leigh Scott really enjoyed her time on the show, and it comes through in the book as she talks about the hectic shooting schedules, almost with a fondness. It's nice to read that over 30 years later she is still friends with her "Shadows" co-stars. How many people can say they are friends with their ex-co-workers after that many years? I recommend this book to anyone who ever had or still has a fondness for the show.

                              5 out of 5 stars First hand.......2002-04-26

This is just one of the best books I've ever read on Dark Shadows. Kathryn writes brilliantly on her time in the show, describing the marvellously. Reading the various anecdotes made me wish I was there when the show was originally broadcast and there were a lot of stories I'd never heard. A great shame it has never been shown properly in the U.K. - thank goodness I've got the videos! Well recommended for anyone who loves Dark Shadows or fans of cult tv-programmes who are curious about this series.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference Book! .......2007-05-16

I have this book and find myself reaching for it everytime I do a scrapbook layout on PSE 4 and am wondering how to manipulate my photos and the backgrounds. What I like about it most is that there are before and after color photos of the screen and the photo they altered; as well as detailed easy to follow instructions. For instance, they show the actual tool bar and with a red arrow, point to the place you click on. These arrows are numbered so you can easily tell what to do. There is also text at the bottom with clear instructions that correlate to the arrows.

Previous reviewers disliked the intense colors and overall quality of the publication. While I agree that the colors could have been chosen better (black writing on dark turquoise is hard to read), overall, it is the colored photos, colored arrows and steps which make it easy to execute whatever you want to do.

Now, if you are looking for advanced photoshop techniques, this is not the book for you. But, for just general photoshop elements work like retouching photos, adjusting backgrounds of photos, adding frames, improving lighting, working with type, removing blemishes, etc., this book is great!

1 out of 5 stars Not the QUE quality I have known before!.......2006-09-21

I'm thankful for the review I read here. Afterwards I checked it out at
a local book store. QUE should be ashamed of themselves!

                                    1 out of 5 stars Visual Confusion.......2006-09-16

The publishers need to take a basic layout class. The page paper is magazine quality with at least five bold colors applied liberally to each page. The color coding is supposed to simplify, but overwhelms the eyes. Tips are at the bottom of the page printed in black on a medium blue. Definitely glad I made a trip to Borders to look before I purchased.
