The dynamics of the International Monetary Fund are examined here in terms of how the system coped in the 1980s with the crises resulting from events in Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina, the three most heavily indebted developing countries in the world. Ernest J. Oliveri offers three case studies that demonstrate levels of cooperation and defection in the world of international finance. The Mexican case offers the richest example of cooperation by a Latin American borrower. At the other extreme is Brazil, which adamantly refused to recognize the legitimacy of the IMF as a participant in its economy. In between is Argentina, which took a hard line until 1985 but recently softened its resistance to international pressure. These three countries provide the reader with the widest possible scope of behavior within the confines of an interdependent world economy in crisis. In each of the studies under consideration, the primary independent variable is the system of inter-American finance itself. While Oliveri focuses on separate actors and their roles at different points during the crisis, the final considerations are how they relate to systemic maintenance, the threats they may pose to it, and their efforts to preserve it. Oliveri observes that international finance in the 1970s was anarchic. By 1982, the "system" was ill-equipped to accommodate the serious stress caused by de facto defaults. What happens when a severe financial crisis threatens this precarious stability? Can the system's behavioral boundaries constrain short-term self-interested actions? The Latin American debt crisis provides such a challenge to the system. Oliveri finds that accommodation by players involves skillful, though capricious and arbitrary, coordination by creditors and borrowers; the IMF is not a manager of an "international debt regime," but only one of its players. He concludes that adjustments have indeed been short-term and that at present no mechanism exists to coordinate this volatile system with stable long-term objectives. Latin American specialists, business managers, and political scientists will find this book provocative and informative reading.

Women on their nerves are world wide.......2007-02-16

Excellent book. The more honest book about psycology of women ever. I got it from a female friend, women enjoy it, but men will enjoy and learn from it.

From the book I learned and confirmed so much about being in a relationship with a woman (Mother, girlfriend, syster, daughter, wife, coworker). This book reflects in a humorous, concise and graphical way, the daily and simple adventures of modern women, while getting bottom line without offending anybody.

This book would prevent many problems between couples beforehand. Maitena goes deep into the reality of every possible serious situation from dating to parenting with the magic of creating laughs as eventually you will get yourself in it ( and hopefully safe out of it).

Maitena the argentinian female writer is a master of words and painting. I hope the english translation be ready soon.

En un mundo de comics donde las mujeres tienen poca cabida, Maitena se perfila como una de las mas fuertes exponentes del feminismo inteligente, narrando el complejo mundo de la mujer a través del humor gráfico. Como hombre me encantan sus cartones y me ha ayudado a comprender a mi pareja. Maitena muestra un feminismo refinado, intelectual y no misandro.

Maitena is an argentinian cartoonist, who delights in surprising the reader, and making him laugh. Her sense of humor is rather acerbic, but I think that is quite refreshing. Her cartoons center on women, what happens to us (at work, in relationships, etc...) and how we think. Maybe you won't identify with what happens in many of her comics, but you'll certainly feel others depict quite closely what happens to you or your friends.

After having success with her cartoons, she was asked to compile them in books. This is the first of her books in the "Mujeres Alteradas" ("Altered women") series. In a recent New York Times's article Maitena explained the reason for the title of the series. She said that "To me an altered woman is one who has all of these battlefields open at the same time". "We've got work, men, maternity, our body, our friends, our mothers, a whole bunch of things, and that's what puts us in an altered state, in which we can go from euphoria to a depressed crying jag in 15 minutes".

I really enjoyed this compilation of cartoons, and I believe you are highly likely to do the same, provided you know at least a little bit of spanish, or are well predisposed to reading it with the help of a small english-spanish/spanish-english dictionary. Having already taken the "language issue" into consideration, I think I can strongly recommend this book to you. I would like to finish this review with a quotation from the article I mentioned above. There Maitena says that "Women are not all the same, but the same things happen to us". In my opinion, that is the reason why all women (and men interested in knowing more about us) will love this book.

This book has a lot of jokes (in spanish) regarding everyday life nowadays, from a modern woman's point of view. The author, Maitena, is quite well-known in Argentina, and her work has also been published in Spain and France.

If you read it, not only will you have fun, you'll also improve your spanish. I recommend it to women, but also to men (I think that after reading this book they are highly likely to understand us better:)!!).

What a phenomenally detailed read this is. Dave Zimmer meticulously describes the early years of these three legends, gently leading us through the years of sixties rock until the three paths finally converged in CSN. The incredible photography of Henry Diltz is a perfect complement to Zimmer's text. Zimmer explores the complex personality and ego issues which led to supreme dissonance among the men whose voices blended in harmonies so beautiful as to defy description. Harmony well done requires a blending of the individual voices, which necessitates submerging egos. Individually, the creative genius of each member is awe-inspiring, but collectively the music of CSN is pure, unadulterated magic.

With the addition of Neil Young to the mix, Zimmer depicts four ultra-creative souls struggling to be heard as indivduals. Written with the band's cooperation, the book is filled with interviews and insightful quotes. The later years of CSN&Y sound like a high school clique-breaking up, reconciling, reconfiguring and excluding. Zimmer guides us through the decades, transitioning smoothly from one member of the band to the next as he describes the triumphs and tragedies following the glory years.

In a time when musicians are blacklisted for speaking out about political issues, it is refreshing to be reminded that at one time musicians who protested through their music were heroes to many of us.

Better than I expected!!!.......2004-09-20

I thought this book was great. Although I've been a CSN and CSNY fan my whole life, I'm only 25 so I wasn't around when Woodstock happened. This book gave me a new perspective on CSN and CSNY.

This group, to me, is right up there with the Beatles. Great harmony, great chemistry, great songs. And like the Beatles, they've endured their share of arguments and yet still manage to reach out to their fans with simple lyrics and songs.

I loved the biographical nature of the book. Sure, there were times I would have liked to have known what they were thinking as they wrote/sang a particular song, but I don't think this book was meant to discuss those details specifically. I loved reading about the bizarre details that few people know about them. There were many times I could not stop reading.

The only problem that I saw with the book was that there was not enough material. It can only go so far, but I would like to see an up-to-date version. When I finished, I felt like I could have read 100 more pages.

If you're a CSN/Y fan at all, you will not be disappointed. It will only leave you wanting more.

Too biographical..........2004-08-30

It is a biography, and so one should expect to be sauntered through the births, childhoods, teen years, and adulthoods of these three rock mega-stars. With that simple framework in hand an author should then consider, I believe, what the readers connection is to your subject. With David Crosby, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash, the obvious link is the music. There is also the rather chaotic, evolutionary decades of the sixties and seventies to be considered, which the music reflected and effected, as well as the more transient experiences most people had with the band, such as their concert appearances. But what I would guess most people really tune into when they read a book like this is the product the trio produced, which served as our "middle-man" to their individual and collective psyche, and creative spirits over those decades.

Even Graham Nash intones late in the book, "People have always tended to place far too much importance on the nature of the personal relationships between us, instead of what is created out of these relationships". Amen, Graham. You would think a light bulb should have ignited over author Dave Zimmer's head as he considered this statement, and allowed it to act like the beam from a lighthouse to guide his work. Instead that's exactly what the book focuses on. The first several chapters, of course, offer a succinct and necessary descriptive overview of each of the performers childhood roots. Once you're into the CSN and CSNY segments, however, the book devolves into tale after tale of how the boys couldn't play nice together. To be honest, I really don't care about their squabbling. I care about the music, and for the most part, the music took place independent of the squabbling. There is a place for the 'squabble-tales', such as when the music was a product of them, such as Nash's 'Wasted On the Way'. But most of the squabbles tended to damn rather than redeem the music. I really wish Zimmer would have taken liberties with, rather than literally pursuing the definition of 'biography'. Further editing could have been done with the tales of rock and roll excess. Did I really need to be told what great weed David Crosby was able to score? I probably would have ventured to guess that it was primo.

And what do you replace these ditties on the cutting floor with? More of the stories behind the music, which the book is not devoid of. There is a nice discourse on 'Wooden Ships' for instance. But by and large, vast segments of the CSN and Y catalog are ignored. Of the thirty-one songs recorded by Stills with Manassas, for instance, only a handful (yeah, I count five) are given any mention at all, and most of that information could have been gleaned from the album jackets. There have to be stories behind these songs, and since I don't spend much time with David, Stephen, and Graham, but do spend time with their music, it would be nice to know more about it. Gosh, what IS IT Stephen is wailing in Spanish while Graham and David do the "Do-do-do-do-do..." coda on 'Suite: Judy Blue Eyes'? You won't find out here, though it's probably the most-asked question about their music.

I was going to give this work three stars, and probably should have, but it IS a biography and perhaps I'm being unfair in wanting it to be something it isn't. When the book 'Crosby, Stills and Nash: The Story Behind the Music' arrives, perhaps then I'll be happy. For now, if you want to hear about the naked ladies walking around Crosby's pad, or how Still's was cajoled into performing in an afro wig, this book is your baby! On the other hand, if you want to know what inspired Stills to dig back into the Buffalo Springfield catalog to graft 'Questions' onto 'Carry On', you'll have to be a bit more patient... and you may never know.

CSN---Blah,Blah,Blah..............2002-06-27

OK--I bought this book,because I really do love those guys---but I am sorry to say that the author's sugary treatment of his subjects are probably all that one is ever going to get of CSN. I know that Crosby has written an account. I wish that Graham would write a book--but out of respect for his Bandmates,probably won't---and that's a shame. Because I think he would write an honest account,of how things really went down.But the saddest thing is that Stephen will probably never write an honest,open account---too much pain to re-live,again.

This book is simply a must for anybody who wants to know what it is really like in the worlds of David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. The author, Dave Zimmer, doesn't merely describe events, he takes you there to watch as an insider. In the process, the book captures all the vibrance of the best of their live concerts. I have met both Crosby and Stills, and can say that Zimmer hits the mark with these guys, time after time, including some little-known stories never before told. My favorite is Stills' reaction to Nash stealing his girlfriend -- well, you just have to read it for yourself! The photos are outstanding, showing the evolution of the rock stars in the past generation, but what really works is the way Zimmer has crafted the work, along with his intimate knowledge and ability to make Stills, Nash, Crosby, as well as Neil Young and others, to open up and spill their guts. This book is like a great movie. You keep going back to it, over and over, because of the way it makes you feel.

An outstanding accomplishment by author Zimmer. He takes you backstage, in the studio and to the homes of CS&N, and provides a remarkable, authentic picture of life with the gang. The author seems invisible, a stellar achievement, and the inside world of the pop music business and the artists that make it work come to life. The section on how Nash "stole the girl" from Stills, and their reaction, is priceless. I was able to make contact with the author, Dave Zimmer, who works for MCA records, and he says a new edition of the book will be out sometime in '99, in time for a landmark tour.

Secure Coding 101.......2005-09-01

Personally I work as a penetration tester, so Hacking the Code was right up my alley. I read the book over the course of a day, stuck at an airport. (...)Mark has a certain way of showing information to the reader in a very clear and thought-out manor. Content of the book may be of highly technical nature but it is very easy to read (a rare mix). By the end of the book I felt like I knew everything about ASP, its amazing how much there really is to know.
If you work in the security industry then this book is a must, however, if you are a developer, webmaster or even someone curious about code security, READ IT.

Terse ASP.NET security insights.......2004-11-07

I liked the content here a lot but the organization needs work, and the text is really too terse. In fact, I felt like I was reading an outline. Granted, there are code samples and the book covers all of the important basics, like security database access, validating user input and encrypting critical data.

This is good introductory material on the serious security issues that need to be dealt with when you are developing any web application (not just ASP.NET). But the organization, for me, really detracts from the value of the work.

The book is organized into chapters along the high level groups of issues like data security, sessions, and authentication. Then within each chapter there are a set of threats with discussions and example code. Think of it like a cookbook where the definition of the problem is a lot more terse. At the end of each chapter is a check list and a short FAQ section.

This is not an introductory level book. This is for engineers who understand the ASP.NET framework and are looking for practical advice on how to secure their applications against malicious use.

Great security ideas.......2004-10-04

This is a great book with a lot of really good ideas on improving ASP.NET applications and ASP.NET security. The book is organized into "ideas" which can help secure an ASP.NET (or really any) application. Beneath each idea is a list of what type of threats the specific idea mitigates, followed by the actual ASP.NET implementation. One thing I really liked about this book is that it's presented in a way which helps illustrate how hackers could infiltrate your web applications. I found this to be very effective in driving home a security lesson.

The book is organized into ten different sections on aspects of ASP.NET security, which range from user management (which includes how to handle user names, passwords, and the like) to developing applications with security in mind (which includes issues like cross-site scripting attacks and error logging). Many sites with user management features provide a "Secret Question", which is used in case you forget your password. The secret questions often include questions like "What is the name of your favorite pet?" or "What city were you born in?". The book goes on to show that the secret question concept goes against everything security experts have been saying by demonstrating how hackers can use brute-force attacks along with educated guesses to gain unauthorized access.

This book even discussed connection string issues and encryption in config files, which is an issue I am currently struggling with. Code examples are provided for all of the ideas presented, which are generally quite clever in and of themselves.

If you are serious about improving the security in your ASP.NET applications, then do yourself a favor and read this book. I think you will find it was time well-spent.
