Book Description
Despite the increasing trend towards deregulation, the public regulation of private activities remains a common phenomenon in industrialized countries. However, it is frequently claimed that slow and costly regulatory licensing procedures impede economic growth. This book investigates the strategic and adaptive interaction between citizen-applicants and administrators in regulatory licensing bodies, and studies the effects of policies to accelerate and simplify these processes.
Based on a variation and extension of the enforcement game, the author demonstrates that amendments to procedural rules which aim to speed-up and improve licensing procedures may have the effect of reducing social welfare. He illustrates that the failure of a policy to increase the number of applications implies a failure to increase the number of licenses granted. This in turn causes a reduction of social welfare. Importantly, he shows that the reverse implications are not true and that despite an increase in the number of applications or licenses granted, social welfare may still decline. Therefore, he argues that any evaluation of procedural reforms on purely theoretical grounds is impossible. Only the measurement of real improvements in social welfare will verify the success of a policy. To establish failure, however, it is simply necessary to observe a decrease in the number of applications or licenses granted.
This book is a rare combination of game theoretic modeling and microeconomic analysis on the effects of variations in the procedural rules of licensing. The conclusions drawn will interest and inform a wide variety of academics and researchers working in the fields of law and economics, regulation, administrative law and game theory.

Book Description
For all Beatle fans, this blend of bio and song review assesses his immense contribution to music. The most comprehensive evaluation of George Harrison's musical career ever published. Treating all of Harrison's songs individually, author Simon Leng investigates the background to their creation, and finds not just pop and rock, but big band, gospel, and Indian and Polynesian influences. The biographical content is enhanced with insights from many key figures who worked closely with Harrison. First-hand accounts from them of the Concert for Bangla Desh and the making of All Things Must Pass take the reader into the studio and concert halls with Harrison. Not simply concentrating on Harrison's solo career, Leng also clearly defines Harrison's role in the Beatles and illustrates how Harrison's guitar arrangements were fundamental to the Beatles' sound and success. What emerges from While My Guitar Gently Weepsis a stirring portrait of a great artist whose music and spiritual quest quite literally influenced millions around the globe.
Customer Reviews:
Well-written analysis of George's solo work.......2007-03-10
This is a pretty good book. Unlike it's competitor, or companion "here Comes the Sun", this book is coming from a primarily music-analysis point of view, rather than a spiritual hagiography/biography. The analysis is pretty much song by song and focuses mainly on his solo albums, not his Beatles work, so anyone who wants to read about the first and early forays into Indian music will not find it here- that said, he does go into detail about the people who worked closely with George in the production of all his work (including the introductions to Ravi Shankar and some of the faces behind the scenes).
I liked this book- if I had to pick one or the other of the two competing
"musical histories" I would choose this one, if only because while it recognizes George's spiritual quest could not be divorced from his music, it focuses on the mechanics of that music rather than the personalities of (and the followers of) the "spiritual masters" he encountered on the way.
Extremely well done.......2007-02-22
Finally, someone analyzes George's musical catologue with the scholarly insight it deserves. Simon Leng understands how to connect the events in George's life to his artistic endeavors. Mr. Leng ably demonstrates that he has pondered long & hard about George's majestic contributions to twentieth century arts and beyond. Bravo.
Most Comprehensive Harrison Retrospective Ever!.......2006-07-13
Anytime a major rock star has several books written about him, they are all basically rehashing the same information under a different title. This book "Then Music Of George Harrison", by Simon Leng, is without question the ultimate reference work on the recorded works of George Harrison. Every album and every single song George ever recorded, is given encyclopedic treatment. No stone is left unturned, as chart rankings, session players, and historical significance of his music is discussed in detail like never before. George's monumental album "All Things Must Pass", is given a 34 page chapter alone, as the author tells of tales from the musicians who participated in the recording, as well as the making of the album, which still stands today as one of the greatest albums in rock history. I found this book to quite an enjoyable read, and a must have edition to any rock n roll library. Beatle fans take note that this is essential!
Intensely George Harrison!.......2006-07-01
This is a book every Beatles' fan should have. Simple as that.
I like the way Leng has documented in almost painstaking detail the music of George Harrison. The former Beatle did let his guitar do most of the talking; he was a phenomenal guitarist and a nonpareil lyricist. Leng does an extraordinary job of pulling together the persona of George Harrison together with his music; an almost yin-yang relationship at times based on this book.
Leng has done a good job of researching his material; Harrison's concert dates, tours and song reviews are provided. The former Beatle's affinity for Eastern religion/philosophy is duly noted in this work and how it molded him and his music. Many credit George Harrison and Ravi Shankar, the man who taught him how to play the sitar for merging Eastern and Western musical styles to create something unique and wonderful.
It is plain that Leng respects George Harrison, the man and the artist and those who played major roles in his life. This is truly an excellent work on the youngest Beatle that will leave readers thinking about him for a very long time.
A Tribute to the Man and his Music.......2006-06-18
This is a new edition redone and expanded from the first English edition published in 2003. In the interveining years Mr. Leng has several more interviews with Harrison's musical accomplices throughout his varied career. The result is a book that will appeal to fans of either George Harrison or the Beatles.
With the additional material included in this book, it is likely to remain the most complete and thorough book on Harrison. While this book might be called a biography, it really concentrates more on the music and the insights to Harrison's personality that the music provides.
Most of the book concentrates on the years after the Beatles when Harrison was developing a solo career. This was a time of ups and downs, ending of course far too soon with lung cancer that had moved to his brain. It is a fitting tribute.
Book Description
"George Harrison's 'Something' is the perfect love song."-Frank Sinatra
Viewed by many as hidden in the shadow cast by Lennon and McCartney, Harrison's songwriting nonetheless stands on its own merits as an impressive body of work. Originally planned as a celebration of Harrison's music, this is now sadly a commemoration too. Beatles fans the world over will mourn the passing of the "quiet Beatle," and this book is a fitting tribute to a revered musician.
Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2004-09-06
Not only does this book tell about George's solo work in non-technical, easy to read language, it also gives some great biographical information. In writing about his strenths as well as his shortcomings as a songwriter, singer, and musician, Leng neither idolizes nor condemns, but portrays George as a human being who made mistakes like everyone. His respect for George and his work clearly comes through. I highly recommend this book!
Intriguing Tome that draws you in.......2004-07-13
I was given this book when I was convalescing in hospital. To be honest I would not have chosen a book about the life and music of George Harrison. However, from the very first chapter I found myself being drawn along a path of exploration about the life's work of George, a person whom I now realise had a tremendous influence on the musical tastes of my entire generation (I'm 52) and the generations that have come after me.
Sure, before reading the book I knew who many of the influential characters were such as Ravi Shankar, John Barham, Eric Clapton and of course the Beatles. But I didn't realise how closely their lives were intertwined and how their geniuses spun off each other.
Most of all I was struck by the spiritual influences on George. How he wasn't really searching for money or fame. It was the music and it was pursuing excellence as a means to knowing one's inner self.
Simon Leng's writing is concise, witty, even satyrical in places. At the same time the author shows himself to be very learned, thoroughly researched and very organised in terms of discography, cross references and building his line of argument in a chronological timeframe.
'The Music of George Harrison : While My Guitar Gently Weeps' by Simon Leng is easy to read, it keeps your interest and it leaves you with a feeling of enrichment.
Very sensitive treatment.......2004-06-04
When I received this book, I was mildly interested, having been a Beatle fan in my youth. I had not really followed the career of George Harrison post-Beatles, though I was aware of his bigger hits, and enjoyed his music. I had the generally accepted view that Harrison was a bit eccentric, reclusive, and mysterious. I was, therefore, not an intense Harrison fan, and not very educated about his music.
Having now finished the book, I feel so much more informed. Simon Leng writes excellently about George's music and what was driving it, as well as it's importance in Harrison's life and faith. Simon has been meticulous in his research, and sensitive in his discussion of a private and passionate man. Though he has far more musical knowledge than I, I found the book easy to read, and fascinating in it's detail about every song written or recorded by Harrison in his solo career. So much so, in fact, that I am off to buy a George Harrison album or two! Thanks, Simon.

Wonderful book.......2004-01-04
Having already read a number of books about the Beatles I was hoping for a good insight into George Harrison and his music and this does not disappoint! The author provies an excellent balance between being informative about Harrison's music without falling into the "trainspotter element" of writing about an artist. The book is well researched and highly entertaining with a pleasant dry sense of humour. Especially interesting are the details of Harrison's early work and influences and the Clapton connection. If you are looking for a god insight into Harrison's work or dimply a damm good read, then look no further!
Highly recommended!

Product Description
Eith analyzes the impact of individual and school level factors on the school bond as a protective factor against delinquency. She further assesses significant differences in school bonding between the genders and across race/ethnicity. Her results show that at the elementary school level, the school bond does not function as predicted by Hirschi (1969). However, at the secondary school levels the school bond begins to function as theorized. A students strong bond to school at the secondary school levels serves a preventative function against delinquent behaviors, drug use, and delinquent peer associations; regardless of overall delinquency in the school environment.

Overall, great book!.......2006-07-02
I found the This is Jeopardy! book in a box where a lot of books are in. I'm a book vendor at the flea market in my hometown. When I got a chance to read it, it was really good. I especially liked the old pictures from that show's past seasons. In the first four seasons of Jeopardy, I wasn't born yet and I didn't remember those episodes, but it was great seeing what that show was like in the past. I wish more TV game shows like Wheel of Fortune would come out with books like this one.

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful information.......2007-03-20
Granted, I'm trying to learn Authorware 7, not 6, but this 8-hour training CD has been very helpful. Hearing the vocabulary of the program is useful, and the explanation of what is going on is very worthwhile. The manual for the software is a duplicate of the Help file included with the program, and as such, isn't the best. As a beginner, I need a LOT of information and while I'm told what tools do what things, I don't understand the when and why of their use - the CD got me started in the proper directions.
Excellent teaching tool.......2005-10-11
I gave this product five stars because it deservs five stars. I am an aspiring Authorware developer and I have been searching for a product that would teach me the nuances of using Authorware. I bought (many) books on learning to use Authorware but something was always missing during the process. Mr. Webster provided that missing link. He did a superb job of teaching each topic from start to finish with clarity and patience. The difference between good and bad program development were readily demonstrated - it could not have been better (except when he produces Authorware 7 of the series). I can confidently go ahead now with developing my own projects based on the knowledge gained from using Authorware 6 by Mr. Webster. I highly recommend this learning tool!
Best learning tool for Authorware 7 I've found.......2005-05-29
I bought a copy of Authoware 7 about 3 months ago. Since then I've used a number of information sources to help me tackle the steep learning curve for this program. I think the three best resources that I've found so far are (in order):
1) this package
2) The AWARE user's list
3) the User's Guides from Macromedia
I have read a number of books, used a couple other training CDs and went through Macromedia's tutorial and was less than impressed with all of those options. A couple of the worst were:
- Macromedia's Authorware 6 Training from the Source...what a complete waste of time and money. It is confusing, poorly organized and very light on actual training content. It sends you through a bunch of steps but really doesn't teach you what you are doing.
- Authorware 6 by Scott J. Wilson, Jennie Thornton...another complete waste of time and money. Even worse - much of the information seemed misleading and even wrong. Maybe I was interpreting what they were saying wrong but these two just couldn't seem to make their points very understandable.
- The Macromedia Authorware 7 Tutorial - again just a step by step walk through of the program. Way to little information about why you are doing what you are doing.
This package, on the other hand, was very good at not only showing you things you need to know, but also why you are doing things the way he shows you. It was also good at showing alternative methods for different tasks. This is not just a mind numbing "click here, type this" walk through.
I would highly recommend this CD - and don't let the Authorware 6 title throw you off. Its great for Authorware 7 since everything you learn is the same in v7 as v6 - version 7 just has some additional options and refinements.
Once this is updated for version 7 I will be back to change my rating to a 5!
Excellent resource for making Authorware accessible!.......2004-10-16
I have struggled to get into Authorware 7.0 for some time and have found the various Authorware books equally difficult for a complete novice. Colin Webster's approach is superb. The Quicktime tutorials take you through Authorware's 6.0's icons and interactions in real time, allowing you to practise by yourself and return at any stage to review his approach and recommendations. The VTC interface is easy to use. I think it is excellent value for money. Several hours of watching these tutorials has taught me far more than the many more hours I have spent poring over Macromedia's official documentation or the TAAM or Jennie Thornton books. I hope VTC can persuade Colin Webster to produce a further CD-Rom (focused on version 7) to explain the more sophisticated and advanced stuff that he cannot explore as fully in his Authorware 6 training video. For a teacher who cannot afford the time or money to attend commercially-priced training courses in AW7, this VTC product represents fantastic value for money.
