Book Description
Government Deficit And Fiscal Reform In Japan presents a theoretical-based comprehensive analysis of economic consequences of government deficits and fiscal reform in Japan. Particular emphasis is directed at developing tools that can be applied to theoretically and empirically clarify essential economic concerns in Japan such as generational incidence of fiscal reform and a growing dependence on government bonds for covering financial deficits. This book evaluates the recent movement of Japanese fiscal reform and government deficit.
The authors first summarize fiscal policy in 1990's. Then, they move on to investigate the macroeconomic impact of government dept and the sustainability problem, and then discuss benefits and costs of public investment. The political aspect of fiscal reconstruction movements in Japan is also examined. Finally, the authors investigate the behavior of central government's control on local governments' debt issuance and its effect on the real activities of local governments. This book points out that the long-run structural fiscal reform is more important than the short-run Keynesian fiscal policy in Japan.

Book Description
Rediscover the delightful, surprising-and irresistibly naughty-Victorian art of "furtling" in this interactive picture book that puts the underside (and more) of Victoriana at your fingertips. Practiced a century ago by Victorian upper classes, "furtling" is a wondrous erotic journey into the human hand's secret folds and furrows, one that delivers pleasure most vitalizing, lifts melancholy from the desponding mind, and restores wounded spirits.
Just place the book on a flat surface, position the fingers in the appropriate manner, life the page, and--Eureka!--behold The Heavenly Twins, Toungue & Cheeks, The Crocodile, or Happy Valley. In all, thirteen meticulous black-and-white engravings of turn-of-the-century ladies and gentleman-each with a die cut in exactly the right place-will profoundly change one's relationship with the hand.
79,000 copies in print.

Juvinile fun.......2004-05-01
Ok, so the hand jokes in this book are a tad sophmoric, but hey, I still laughed. Also, some of the more risque hand poses aren't included. This is pretty tame, but dang funny.
This is the STUPIDEST book I've ever bought on Amazon.......2004-02-18
I bought this book because the reviews were so favorable, but sure wish I hadn't!!! Its incredibly stupid and a waste of money. Unfortunately, its been over a month or I would return it! Unless you like making finger puppets that look like butts, DON"T BUY IT!
The ultimate funny coffee table book!.......2000-06-13
This book is a hoot! I found it at a bed and breakfast I stayed at on their coffee table and it gave me quite a few chuckles. I guess this is what victorians did before tivo....
The perfect accent for your parlor table.......1997-12-10
The Victorians were prudes? You'll never look at old engravings with an innocent mind again. Great fun!

Book Description
Clones of Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz. A robotic housekeeper who makes your bed every morning. A permanent size 6 figure. These are all just fantasies . . . or are they? How much do you really know about gene therapy, artificial intelligence, and bionic modification?
In How to Clone the Perfect Blonde, award-winning journalists Sue Nelson and Richard Hollingham show how cutting-edge science will eventually make your wildest dreams come true. With amazing anecdotes and breezy humor, they describe the latest discoveries in biotechnology, quantum mechanics, cryogenics, nanotechnology, wormholes, and much more -- complete with ironic "instructions" on How to Build a Robotic Servant, How to Live Forever, How to Turn Back Time, and more. You'll be amazed to learn how many of these "fantasies" are already well within our reach.
In the tradition of bestselling pop-science books such as The Physics of Star Trek and How to Build a Time Machine, this entertaining read explores the science of science fiction -- and proves that anything is possible!
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting read, Cool stuff.......2005-08-11
I thought this was an excellent book!
It explore many fascinating futuristic concepts including cloning, genetic engineering, teleportation, artificial intelligence, and tim travel. It tries to break down convoluted concepts like quantum physics and wormholes into more simplistic language that your average Joe could understand. The book completely had my attention the whole way and it actually made me excited about the future (even though many/most of the concepts are pretty out of reach at the moment).
For the most part, relating the more convulted ideas to pop culture worked pretty well. Sometimes, however, they went on tangents talking about which TV show/movie they liked or disliked (uhh... who cares?). The best thing about the book is that you really get into science in general... from biology to physics to computers. And science is awesome. So buy the book!
dumbed down science, humor is juvenile.......2005-04-21
Maybe this is a good book for science airheads and people who laugh easily but most of it didnt work for me. It was like reading a bad science article in USA today with lame jokes.
How to Clone the Perfect Blonde.......2004-12-18
This is the best, and most humorous, science book I've ever read. It's not written for geeks, though they too will appreciate its wry humor. Instead, the authors approach science in a quite approachable way - asking and answering the questions that people on the steeet really have about today's mind-reeling scientific advances. It's easy to see why it was voted one of the best science books of the year on NPR's Science Friday program.
A perfect gift for the curious reader.......2004-12-18
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book, and it doesn't disappoint. For anyone even mildly curious about science and the latest advances, this book highlights some of the most interesting and explores the possibilities -- and limits -- in understandable prose. The authors inject humor throughout, spicing up what others often make into dull, textbook explanations. From cloning to weight loss to time travel to life expectancy, these journalists have picked topics that touch on our everyday interests and present what we need to know in the most readable style I've found in any science-related material. This is a book for non-techies and science buffs alike, with solid information but an entertaining style. Anyone looking for a gift for a discerning reader should pick up a copy!
Pop Science At Its Worst.......2004-12-14
Received as a present and typically enjoy pop science writing but this is too low-level for even me. In addition, I also could've lived without the authors opining.
Book Description
"A highly engaging and impeccably researched study of the cultural anxieties produced in the destabilization of straight and gay identity." --Michael DeAngelis, DePaul University "Original and compelling . . . an example of the best kind of television scholarship. Gay TV and Straight America is a rare find." --Sasha Torres, author of Black, White and In Color: Television and Black Civil Rights After years of relative silence on the subject of homosexuality, television in the 1990s saw a striking increase in gay material. Sitcoms like Friends, Seinfeld, Ellen, and Will & Grace, and dramas like Party of Five, Beverly Hills 90210, Homicide: Life on the Street, and The Commish added numerous gay and lesbian characters, aired special gay-themed episodes, and included references to homosexuality nearly every week. In Gay TV and Straight America, Ron Becker draws on a wide range of political and cultural indicators to explain this sudden upsurge of gay material on prime-time network television. He argues that the growing visibility of gay material both reflected and deepened Straight America's anxieties about social fragmentation and the politics of sexuality. In this cultural climate, gay material became a highly charged but also highly valuable narrowcasting-age tool for television executives looking to target a quality audience of well educated, upscale adults interested in "edgy" programming. Bringing together Supreme Court rulings, media coverage of gay rights battles, debates about multiculturalism and political correctness, analyses of numerous prime-time programs and much more, Becker helps us understand just what gay TV reveals about Straight America. In today's cultural climate where same-sex marriage bans are passed with wide margins yet millions of viewers tune in weekly to programs like Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, this book offers valuable insight on the complex condition of America's sexual politics. Ron Becker is an assistant professor of communications at Miami University, Ohio.

Book Description
Many technical professionals are tossed into their new position of managing an IT department without enough training or experience let alone a clear idea of what is expected of them. Other technicians are trying to decide if they should join the ranks of management, and want the real facts about managing and managing other technical pros before they decide.
To compound the issue, most companies have become highly dependent on their IT departments for their day-to-day business operations often including revenue generation so the tasks are critical and the learning curve is steep.
The IT Managers Handbook, 2nd edition provides essential information needed to manage the new responsibilities thrust on you (or the ones you would like to have): vital tasks such as creating budgets, evaluating technologies, administering compliance, and managing staff.
A completely updated and expanded second edition that provides practical, easily accessible management advice written specifically for new IT managers:
· Brings you up to speed on those business practices most critical to effective IT operations: recruiting, budgeting, resource planning, managing personnel, and working with vendors.
· Includes expanded coverage on such critical IT management topics as security, disaster recovery, storage, government/regulatory compliance, and project management.
· Organizes information modularly so you can delve directly into only the topics that you need.
· Provides a unique management perspective on those specific technical issues with the most significant business ramifications.
· Includes new material on key technology topics such as open source, wireless, handhelds, outsourcing, offshoring, and operations, as well as updated coverage of e-commerce, remote access, intranets, and LAN/WAN management.
Customer Reviews:
Provides a thorough overview of what to expect in IT management........2007-08-09
As someone who has taken a circuitous route to the world of IT, the book, IT Manager's Handbook, Second Edition: Getting your new job done has helped me get a handle on all of the territory working in IT encompasses. When I first started working at my current IT position at a small company it seemed that my job's duties were coming at me from every direction. The authors, Bill Holtsnider and Brian D. Jaffe, do a great job addressing the variety of problems and solutions that come with managing IT. This book would best serve someone crossing the thresholds of working purely in technology or mainly in management.
At smaller businesses like where I work, it is fairly common to not have an "IT manager" or even an IT staffer. Instead often a manager, engineer, or administrative assistant will be pressed into IT service. The IT Manager's Handbook would be a valuable `read' for such an accidental IT manager.
Great Book.......2007-05-09
Really excellent reference book. Im starting as an IT Manager and this book is my head reference.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful to a Point.......2006-05-15
This was a basic read, for thse already into the methodology explained throught the book. Would be a useful tool for someone just starting out. I would recommend expanding on the disaster recovery portion, and possibly adding a section on managing in the non-profit arena.
Very basic.......2004-02-23
This book is written only for the very basic beginner in IT. If you have been around an IT department for any length of time, you will find it difficult to pick up any new management thoughts in this book. For example, the entire topic of ERP systems is covered in 2 pages.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.......2003-05-04
Technology can change all it wants but the fundamentals of being a good IT Manager have changed very little. This book hits all the major areas of focus from staffing and budgeting to infrastructure and disaster recovery.
The section entitled "Certification: How Do I Know Its Worth" applied 10 years ago, and still applies today. Right on the money and a good brief for an IT Manager building a team. Also, small but extremently important policy issues like email and security are included.
I do think that the book included slightly heavy doses of technical information such as a full page table of different memory technologies as well as an entire section entitled "How Do I Configure a Server". These would service a Network Administrator or Engineer just fine but an IT Manager ? Not so much. Don't let this detract you from the overall picture though. Too much information is certainly better than not enough.
I have to be honest, I didn't read this cover to cover. But for someone who has spent time as an IT Manager in the past and one who is looking at doing it again, I was able to re-establish concepts and draw on new tools that, no doubt, provided benefits.
Too broad and lacks depth.......2002-08-30
This is something for a new manager with little experience in not only systems administration but supervision. This book may give a clue to someone who has just stepped into such a position but provides little depth and direction. Unfortunately, there isn't any one book out there as management is a very complex role that encompasses many disciplines, any one of which would be a volume in itself. I was very dissappointed and I find the other reviews misleading.
full of practical examples!.......2001-03-02
This book is full of practical examples. It is useful to people who have in-depth programming knowledge but no idea how to do a budget or interview job candidates. I found this book specially timely, given that my team is composed of several technical professionals who are now considering a move into management. The information in the book is well layed out and quite accessible.
