Book Description
Governments in Canada today are facing a fiscal crisis. In recent years both Ottawa and many of the provinces have undertaken cost-cutting measures, such as reducing program spending and streamlining the public service, in an attempt to get their fiscal houses in order. Yet these efforts have barely even begun to address the problem. Governments still find themselves strapped for cash, struggling to find enough money to keep our most cherished social programs afloat while continuing to make payments on the billions of dollars in debt they owe to the rest of the world. How did we get to this point? The answer is that for more than thirty years the people we elected to office, and the public servants who ostensibly worked under their direction, essentially squandered our tax dollars. Operating within a political culture that promoted a "spend now, pay later" philosophy, governments across the country embarked on a program of unchecked public spending; they carelessly sank our money into new institutions, typically without any thought to their sustainability in the future. Why did this recklessness go unchallenged? This is the central question posed in Guardians on Trial, a collection of essays transcribed from interviews gathered for a documentary film. The conversations - with politicians, public servants, academics and business leaders with insiders' knowledge - shine a light on government economic mismanagement and its inevitable consequences.

Book Description
How Ottawa Spends 2000-2001 explores the continuing redefinition of the federal government's role in Canadian governance. After years of deliberate down-sizing and withdrawal, Ottawa now has financial surpluses. As well, the approaching election and the sense that Ottawa must demonstrate its relevance are contributing to a desire for greater activism. Yet there are continued pressures to either stay the course of the first mandate or even go further with tax cuts. The volume analyzes these cross-cutting pressures in a variety of key policy areas.

Book Description
This edition of How Ottawa Spends examines the evolving Liberal government's agenda as it moves into its third term in office. The federal election of October 2000 was hardly a campaign of ideas, and the Liberals won it without a clear or detailed platform of policy initiatives. The mini-budget promised substantial tax cuts, but insofar as the Liberals sketched out any priorities, they seemed to imply a shift towards increased spending. As well, in the closing days of their previous government, the Liberals seemed tired and lacking in policy focus. It remains unclear, therefore, how they will shape their new mandate and what continuity it will have with their previous policy directions. This volume probes Ottawa's evolving agenda with chapters on a variety of economic and social policy topics: the government's fiscal and management framework, natural resources, regional development, air transportation, the social union, disability, gender equality, the voluntary sector, and the courts.

Book Description
Public money is perhaps the quintessential currency of influence for politicians and public servants inside government. It shapes how they undertake the nation's business and it impacts on the standards of living in the country. The Politics of Public Money examines the extent to which the influence of players in the budgetary process is shifting from a bilateral relationship between departmental spenders and central guardians to a more complex multilateral relationship involving spenders and central guardians, as well as priority setters and financial watchdogs.
David Good analyzes this shift of influence in terms of a broader societal change from an `old village,' conditioned by old norms of behaviour, to a `new town' that brings with it new ideas about how much public money should be spent, where it should be spent, and how it should be managed. To better understand the changing situation, Good develops a new framework for analyzing the politics and management of public money. This framework is used to explore the interactions among budget players and, perhaps the most central of all, the relationship between Prime Minister and Minister of Finance.
As an analysis of the changing budgetary process and an examination of the promises and pitfalls of budgetary reform, The Politics of Public Money sheds new light on the role of insiders in influencing our government's spending.

Book Description
Secrets in High Places is the story of a group of young researchers who set out in the summer of 1998 to evaluate the Canada Infrastructure Works Program (CIWP), a government initiative that promised to repair the country's crumbling infrastructure while creating much-needed jobs for Canadians. During their investigation, the researchers discovered that many of the projects that received funding had nothing to do with infrastructure, and the government's claim that the CIWP was reducing unemployment was questionable at best. What was most disturbing, however, was how difficult it was for them to obtain any reliable information on the program at all. At every turn, the group was met with suspicion, secrecy and mistrust. Although three levels of government (federal, provincial and municipal) participated in the program, no one, at any level, could tell them how and why particular decisions were made - or even who was responsible! Their findings reveal an alarming truth about the nature of government spending in Canada: it is a shamefully unaccountable process that almost entirely excludes the ordinary citizen.

Anti-Union bias in Oklahoma not new.......2000-02-19
It's still there, Labor Omnia Vincit(Labor Conquers All), in Article 6, Section 35 of the Oklahoma Constitution. It's the official state motto and there was a time when working men and women in Oklahoma tried to convert the motto into reality. The Industrial Workers of the World(Wobblies) was formed on June 27, 1905, in Chicago. It was to be the working peoples answer to the ever-increasing tension arising out of the emerging urban industrial society in America at the turn of the century. The tension was perhaps best exemplified by the escalating confrontation between capital and labor. The Wobblies were born out of desperation, fear and self-preservation. They preached violence, revolution, sabotage and Socialism. They rejected politics as a racket and urged the organization of a new society by the oppressed. They were poor, radical, lacking in formal education working men and women who saw no commonalty of interest between employer and employee. They refused to sign labor contracts or affiliate with any political party. The movement was crushed in Oklahoma by means more violent than they had ever practiced. The perpetrators were, you guessed it, the business community, the judiciary, the police, religious groups, the news media, and a multitude of elected officials. Thanks to Sellars, an instructor of History at the University of Oklahoma, this little known history of Oklahoma is available in a well written, well researched, highly readable book. It's all here, the founding of the Wobblies and their efforts to organize migratory harvest workers and oil field hands and their relationship with the AFL and the Socialist Party, all placed in context with the political and social events of the time. The authorities efforts to suppress the Wobblies is described in a chilling scene from Tulsa which was repeated in varying degrees throughout Oklahoma. Just before midnight on November 9, 1917, a black-robed and hooded mob accosted 16 prisoners, almost all of whom were members of the Wobblies. They were being escorted by Tulsa police officers from City Hall to the county jail. The mob, called the Knights of Liberty and comprised of police officials, local businessmen, and oil company executives, took the prisioners at gunpoint to a secluded location on the outskirts of Tulsa. What followed was a vicious ritual in which the vigilantes beat, whipped, and tarred and feathered their captives. "It was a party, a real American party," one newspaper reported. The impact of World War One on the efforts of the Wobblies to organize and the reaction of the state and federal government is examined as is the decline of both the Wobblies and the labor movement after the war. This book is a must read for anyone interested in the social history of labor in Oklahoma, the Wobblies, or political events from the early 20th century. It is an important event in Oklahoma that has, until now, been neglected.

Book Description
The premise for this brand-new romantic manga comedy is actually sweet, (somewhat) innocent, hilarious, and just a little bit bizarre...
Seiji Sawamura is the toughest seventeen-year-old in town, feared by all for his fighting prowess and his deadly "devil's right hand." But at heart, Seiji is a softy and all he wants is an end to his 17-year history of being a lonely single guy. Unfortunately his tough guy reputation only serves to decrease his popularity with the ladies.
Then one day, Seiji wakes up to discover his "devil's right hand" has turned into...a miniature gal named Midori! Midori is actually a real girl who is just as surprised as Seiji to find out she has now become-literally-Seiji's right hand! It turns out Midori has always had a crush on Seiji, and her desperate wish to be connected to him has somehow really, really come true...
Customer Reviews:
an all-around read.......2006-09-03
It doesn't matter if you're male or female, you can relate to the characters...even if the situation is so bizarre that it's totally unbelievable! A girl stuck on a guy's right hand? Naughty jokes aside, HUH? you say, but forget that, and just sit back and enjoy.
In this novel, to earn some extra money, Midori and Seiji join an all-woman's wrestling contest, with Seiji in drag, with predicable results. Then, Shuichi has the twisted duo working a doll-con, where Seiji shows some of his allegience to his "partner," and then Midori feels threatened when an old crush of Seiji's shows up, with unexpected results, then a couple of dates and a robot interfere in their lives. Finally, to really charge up the tension, Kota forces a confrontation with Seiji regarding Midori's continued existence as a part of his body...with very emotional tugs at the heart of the reader.
Warning: This volume has been censored.......2006-08-31
Even though the tame fanservice in this title was left uncensored in earlier volumes of this 8 volume series, Viz has censored volume 7 to cover up an exposed breast and nipple in two panels on page 130. The original had Midori freaking out over Lucy's exposed nipple, in Viz's censored version the bra has been redrawn to cover the nipple. This severly alters the humor of this scene.
Shame on Viz.
Cute and Hilarious.......2006-04-12
From its description, this manga sounds like it would be totally perverted. It's not. I read about "Midori Days" in a magazine and was immediately turned off by the idea of a guy having a girl for a right hand. I finally ended up reading it, and I was very pleasantly surprised. The manga-ka does not take the obvious path and write a manga all about fan-service.
"Midori Days" is above-standard in humor. I always get lots of laughs out of every volume. The best part is all the love triangles. There are sexual jokes, but they're pretty mild. Still I wouldn't suggest it to anyone under 13.
There are a lot of sweet moments too, with Midori learning to be more outgoing and Soji to be more sensitive to Midori's feelings. The two have a good chemistry together, and the romance is very rewarding.
Overall, I highly suggest this manga. It will keep you entertained with the humor and romance. It's unique, out-there, and it's one of the best I've read in a while.
Comedy with a dash of romance? .......2005-11-08
Would you call it romance? I think this manga is aimed at guys, however, it seems that a relationship will develop...
Story: Basically a tough guy ends up with his hand turned into a girl, a REAL girl that used to be in his school, until she went into a coma. She's always had a crush on him, and now she's part of him!
Okay, that's actually just the opening, and a strange one it is. The whole manga though, is enveloped in comedy and drama (mostly comedy, but hints of future romance). There is a bit of fanservice; Midori, (hand) girl on cover, her bare chest is exposed to the reader. This only happens like twice, and not in any nasty way...more like a Love Hina way.
If the small flash of fanservice scares you away (girls), don't let it. I'm a girl and enjoyed this regardless of that.I can't wait to get the next volume, and you should try it too!

With pride, drummer Jon Fishman explains the level of success that his quirky, experimental roots-rock quartet has achieved: "We've reached the point where it's cool to hate us." As you might expect from this eclectic band, such a metric speaks louder than the legions of Phish fans that follow the quartet from town to town.
Cowriter Richard Gehr describes this enlightening book as "a studio edit of Phish in real-time conversation." Along with Fishman, Page McConnell, Mike Gordon, and Trey Anastasio are revealed in their own words, the result of a spate of interviews conducted by Gehr between 1996's New Year's Eve show at Boston's Fleet Center and 1997's year-end Madison Square Garden run. Much like a Phish show, the conversation rambles back and forth, and the complete portrait of the band only emerges subtly and indirectly, although it certainly does emerge. Most rewarding is when they discuss the process of performing and creating music. They describe "onstage love affairs" between two of the four, and how certain members basically ignored others for years at a time and then finally "discovered" them after a decade of playing together. Some may be happy to know that even Phish own up to the unevenness (read: boredom) of some of their extended musical journeys.
In many ways, The Phish Book serves as a gift to die-hard fans, often diving into some of the band's more esoteric mythology: the origins of songs and lyrics, the various recording processes, the Dude of Life, and so on. The treasure-trove of photos includes shots of bars and stadiums, onstage and backstage, giant flying hot dogs, fans clothed and not, Fishman clothed and not. But the uninitiated can gain much-needed perspective from this enjoyable book as well. They'll learn how Phish find a connection between all styles of music, and use this connection (implied or otherwise) to inform their own music. And they might be surprised to discover how much substance there is behind the twirling fans and endless jams. --Marc Greilsamer
Book Description
Having played more than a thousand shows and recorded nine albums during their fifteen years together, Phish now brings us a different kind of performance--a written one. The first and only authorized book about the band,
The Phish Book is an extraordinary verbal and visual chronicle of a year in the life of Phish, featuring extensive interviews with the four band members--Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, Mike Gordon, and Page McConnell--conducted by writer Richard Gehr, who also serves as guide to the history, mythology, musical context, and unique audience-band relationship in which the Vermont quartet flourishes.
While it contains many of the trappings of other lavish rock monuments--including more than two hundred pieces of previously unpublished art and photography from the band's private archive--
The Phish Book raises the form to a higher level by means of an innovative roundtable-style discussion format. Richard Gehr and Phish use the events of 1997 as a jumping-off point from which the band members free-associate about themselves, their music, and the dedicated and colorful community that springs up wherever they perform.
Beginning with the backstage scene at Boston's Fleet Center on New Year's Eve, 1996,
The Phish Book explores the band's earliest days in Burlington, Vermont; their musical influences, which include James Brown, Frank Zappa, and the Grateful Dead; their legendary Halloween shows; the two European and two American tours the group undertook in 1997; the stories behind their 1996 studio album Billy Breathes and the following year's live Slip Stitch and Pass; life onstage and off; the sixty-thousand-fan Maine campout and art project known as the Great Went; and the experimental recording and performing techniques that informed the band's most recent studio album, The Story of the Ghost.
More than a journal of the group's evolution over the course of a single year,
The Phish Book is a glorious snapshot of a band much bigger than its parts and at the height of its collective power.
Customer Reviews:
Different...Good, Not Great........2006-07-21
The Phish Book is different. If you are looking for a definitive, band-endorsed biography of Phish, this book is not for you. But if you're a fan, give it a chance anyway.
A funny thing happened to me while reading The Phish Book. First, I got angry. As a huge fan who was borderline obsessed with Phish for over a decade beginning in 1992, I thought and hoped that because this was the one and only "official," band-endorsed book that it would be a chronological biography with the complete history of phish. I hoped it would have insight from the band, great stories, etc., etc. When I discovered that it was more of an interplay between the author's sometimes overly wordy thoughts, seemingly scattered band musings about complex musical terms mixed with glimpses into interesting tales, I hated it. Then I pressed on and kept reading. I still hated it.
Then I thought about what the book was saying, how it was saying it, why it was saying it that way, who the band was, and how they thought (based on years of reading articles and seeing dozens of shows) and I got it. The book is an attempt at replicating the same kind of unconventional, improv-but-also-composed vibe that the band strove for forever. In looking at it in this way, you appreciate it for what it is; a clever attempt that comes pretty close, which is a huge compliment. In that sense, you'll probably like it if you give it a chance.
I did not love the book, however. I think that part of the beauty of phish is that their music is always genuine and truly in the moment. Though writing a book in the same fashion is next to impossible, and though this was a good attempt, the book feels a bit contrived. I found myself rooting for the kind of 'ah' moment that comes from a great tension and release type jam, but it never came. Instead, it was more of a passing and somewhat pleasing appreciation.
In the end, if you are a fan of phish as a result of being open-minded musically, you may discover that you can be open-minded as a reader too. And if you can do that, you'll most likely appreciate the book, even if it is not perfect.
Liquid music.......2004-04-03
The bass player in the band I play in is a major Phish-head, and I credit him with being the one to finally turn me on to Phish. Over the years, I've played with dozens of musicians who sang the praises of the jam band from Vermont, but I guess it took hearing that I "had to hear them" twenty times before I finally felt I really "had" to hear them.
Well, now I'm one of those guys who says "you've got to" listen to Phish. Their music's quirky, spontaneous, thought-provoking, ridiculous, and incredibly fun, just like this book.
In no ways a "comprehensive biography," THE PHISH BOOK instead illuminates the depths of Phish through isolated scuba dives into the individual and communal thought processes and attitudes of the four indivuals that make up Phish.
If your attitude toward music (and life) is spontaneous and unstructured-or if you'd like to be more so-you gotta listen to Phish, man.

Perhaps the worst certification book I've used...........2006-08-05
I'm an MCSE (Windows NT 3.51, 4.0, 2000, and 2003) who has passed a total of 17 Microsoft exams. I used this book as my primary study material for passing the 2003 upgrade exams.
The MCSA (70-292) section wasn't too bad; it was missing some minor material on the test, but overall was fairly complete. However, the MCSE (70-296) section had some MAJOR holes! Specifically, the exam has multiple questions on WMI filters on GPOs, Emergency Management Services, and universal group caching, all new 2003 features, NONE of which was even mentioned in the text. I only passed 70-296 because of experience and quite a bit of educated guessing.
Also, as other users have mentioned, the sample tests included with the book have very little in common with the actual exams. They concentrate on areas which aren't even covered in the real exams. Nor is the book (or the practice exams) properly proofed, containing numerous errors of various types.
Save yourself trouble and find an alternate work; this book isn't worth the study time.
worked for me.......2006-07-07
Using this book, and a little real world experience, I nailed the MCSA exam, and (barely) passed the MCSE exam. However, a considerable amount of information on 70-296 seemed completely new to me after closely reading this book. I'd recommend a little extra preparation for it--either practice tests or another book. One or two questions, and I would have gone the other way.
Helpful.......2006-05-25
The content in the book itself isn't bad. The CD is a little buggy though. For example, the online version may or may not run on some PC's. However, since the book is more important it is a good study guide. The pratice questions in each chapter aren't bad but can't properly simulate the "testing environment" like the CD should be able to do. And since the CD doesn't work 100% of the time, you may miss out on this aspect of certification testing. Like all books, there are mistakes and the study material is adequate but hands-on practice should be a requirement. Since this is just a study guide and not a manual or technical text, you can't rely on it to be only source of knowledge.
Way off Target.......2005-05-09
I'm just adding my two cents to what's already been said. I'm an MCSE, MCDBA and an MCT. I'm also an actual consultant who works with the products, not just training. Anywho, enough of that.
My absolute #1 issue with the book is that it isn't in line with the exam itself. The chapters that are aligned (in theory) with the 292 exam basically miss a lot of information that is covered in the exam itself. There is no real paralleling the exam.
That included (boy, did it ever) the sample tests. There was almost no relation between the materials handled in the real exam question and the samples. I'm absolutely not looking for braindump here, but I do want to play at least in the same forest!
Incomplete and with many mistakes.......2005-03-08
Having just re-taken and passed 70-292 I can only say this book is a waste of time. It is incomplete, sometimes wildly inaccurate and especially the test questions do not reflect the exam at all and have many mistakes in them. I used to use Sybex books for my previous MCSA certification, but in this case the Microsoft self-paced training kit is actually much better and more complete. I used that one the second time and passed without problems. If you want some additional info next to the Microsoft book (always a good idea) visit the MS website or try the Syngress 70-292 studyguide next to it.
