Book Description
For dozens of developing countries, the financial upheavals of the 1980s have set back economic development by a decade or more. Poverty in those countries has intensified as they struggle under the burden of an enormous external debt. In 1988, more than six years after the onset of the crisis, almost all the debtor countries were still unable to borrow in the international capital markets on normal terms. Moreover, the world financial system has been disrupted by the prospect of widespread defaults on those debts. Because of the urgency of the present crisis, and because similar crises have recurred intermittently for at least 175 years, it is important to understand the fundamental features of the international macroeconomy and global financial markets that have contributed to this repeated instability.
This project on developing country debt, undertaken by the National Bureau of Economic Research, provides a detailed analysis of the ongoing developing country debt crisis. The project focuses on the middle-income developing countries, particularly those in Latin America and East Asia, although many lessons of the study should apply as well to other, poorer debtor countries. The project analyzes the crisis from two perspectives, that of the international financial system as a whole (volume 1) and that of individual debtor countries (volumes 2 and 3).

Rule #10: Learn all the rules...then break them.
Lea DeLaria has been breaking rules all her life. Now she offers some of her own....
Cross Howard Stern with Sandra Bernhardt, add a one-two punch, and you have stand-up comic Lea DeLaria, who plays to rave reviews on and off the Broadway stage. Now, in this uproarious collection of essays, DeLaria shares her Modern Day Ten Commandments and X-Rated Rules for the World with anyone bold enough to read them.
From fashion advice "Never point at anything beige and call it cool"(Rule #4) to the five myths of ex-girlfriends and the facts about fake breasts, DeLaria offers straight-talking wisdom for a world desperately in need of some raunchy humor. Here Lea shares glimpses of life as a Butch so butch she's mistaken for a man--by her gynecologist. Read all about it as Lea falls hard for the girl of her dreams...reveals how Judy Garland helped her to find her first New York apartment...and gives an appreciation of sex toys that is as outrageous as it is heartfelt. From her promising beginnings as a Nice Italian Catholic girl to her headlined adventures with Nice Italian Catholic girls, among others, here is Lea DeLaria, the stand-up, lay-down, in-your-face comic who tells you everything your mom never wanted you to know.
Customer Reviews:
Thank you God for Lea Delaria!.......2004-12-24
Lea Delaria is the class clown you wish you had in high school. She can always be counted on to speak what everyone else is thinking (particularly those of us who were born WASPS). If you could bottle that special thing she has I would be first in line to buy it.
Lea Rules!.......2002-06-11
Call it a happy accident of browsing, but I found this book a week or so ago and picked it up and it had me laughing out loud in the book store.
Before and after reading it, I wouldn't categorize myself as a major fan of Lea. But, it was a welcome tonic at the time for me.
Her various remarks are often provocative, crude...call them whatever you like. This woman doesn't mince words.
Yeah, she has an opinion. Shouldn't you?
In a culture where people are so afraid to step on others' toes, it is purely delightful to read comic essays like these.
Maybe more people should see the world like this -- with humor and with a willingness to knock a pedestal out of the way when the thing or person on it doesn't deserve to be there.
Reruns...I hate reruns.......2001-12-18
Bsaically this book is a composition of her live shows, which if you have seen, are way funnier live than in print. If you haven't seen her live, or heard one of her CD's then you might be interested, but much of "Leaville" is lost in the translation from live to print. Without the screaming and the faces and the body language it just isn't as funny.
Kiss This!.......2000-05-27
What a wonderful stream of consciousness experience. I would love to have a conversation with Ms. Delaria because I think it would keep me going for a week, trying to figure out just how many groups she has offended, but in a cute way. This is a great read and I was unable to put it down until I finished it. I wish it were longer, but I bet a sequel lurks deep within her, if nothing else! Being a Canadian, I especially loved her view of us. Keep the journals going.
If you're easily offended..........2000-05-22
...then STEP RIGHT UP...True to her style, (thank God!) Lea manages to offend people from every walk of life, and it couldn't be funnier. Everybody needs to be poked at, and Lea's just the woman to do it. I found her stream-of-consciousness writing both dizzying and wonderful. Her dialogues with Mary were hysterical, as were her asides, and her short stories - "Mama Mia", and the one with the aliens -both almost killed me. The footnotes alone are worth the price of the book, not to mention her illustrations- they're hilarious. She's witty, sharp as a tack, playfully insightful, tacky, tasteless, dirty... WONDERFUL! Really makes you want to know Lea in everyday life, if you could handle it. Thanks, Lea! Loved it! The only thing that would make this better is hearing Lea read it aloud - BOOKS ON TAPE?
Product Description

Customer Reviews:
I'm prejudiced.......2002-08-21
I edited this folio. For years, musicians had to transcribe this important music so it could be played, and hoped that the original materials would turn up. The wait is now over.
All of the original parts known to exist of this legendary music were utilized to create corrected, clear, edited scores in concert. There are several pages of notes, including bios, a history of the music and the ensemble, and information on the restoration of this music. Also included is a composition that was never recorded.
Both the estates of Miles Davis and Gerry Mulligan made this music available to me to prepare this folio, and Keith Mardak, CEO of Hal Leonard, deserves credit for making this music available.
For me, this was a challenge and a labor of love. A more detailed article on the editing process will be published by the Journal of the Institute of Jazz Studies in the near future.

Book Description
Using a rich variety of historical sources, Suzanne Morton traces the history of gambling regulation in five Canadian provinces - Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, and B.C. -- from the First World War to the federal legalization in 1969. This regulatory legislation, designed to control gambling, ended a long period of paradox and pretence during which gambling was common, but still illegal.
Morton skilfully shows the relationship between gambling and the wider social mores of the time, as evinced by labour, governance, and the regulation of 'vice.' Her focus on the ways in which race, class, and gender structured the meaning of gambling underpins and illuminates the historical data she presents. She shows, for example, as "Old Canada" (the Protestant, Anglo-Celtic establishment) declined in influence, gambling took on a less deviant connotation -- a process that continued as charity became secularized and gambling became a lucrative fundraising activity eventually linked to the welfare state.
At Odds is the first Canadian historical examination of gambling, a complex topic which is still met by moral ambivalence, legal proscription, and volatile opinion. This highly original study will be of interest to the undergraduate history or social science student, but will also hold the attention of a more general reader.

Tying in with the 8-part prime time Channel 4 series, Regency House Party follows 5 men and 5 women as they meet, flirt, and court within the same strict protocols as Jane Austen's heroes and heroines. Each chapter focuses on a particular character or couple, and the houseguests take part in popular pastimes of the era, such as attending a public dissection, amateur dramatics, fencing and, of course, dressing up and attending balls. They are all looking for a suitable marriage partner, whose wealth and social standing will enhance their own.

a pleasant enough 3 star read.......2005-07-30
In "The House Party," Jeanne Savery takes on the monumental task of dealing with four romance subplots with varying degrees of success.
Almost 20 years ago, beautiful and talented actress Diane Runyard said good-bye to her lover, Steven Cartwright (later Baron Cartwright), when his father secured an advantageous marriage for him. Now, Diane is one of the leading comedic actresses of her time, and, in a twist of irony, is being courted by her ex-lover's only son, 18 year old Steven at Lord Witherspoon's country estate. (Lord Witherspoon is an aficionado of the theatre, much to his practical daughter's, Francine, despair, and has just finished building a new and spectacular theatre on his estate. Lord Witherspoon hopes to stage a new production of "Oedipus" and has secured the services of Diane and her friend and colleague, Roger Brown, to help train the amateur actors, all members of the ton who are interested in the theatre.) And when Baron Cartwright gets word of the fact that his only son and heir is making up to an actress, he descends on Witherspoon's estate, determined to strike the fear of God into this upstart actress' heart. The last thing he expected was to see Diane again, looking to vibrant, lovely and appealing, or to come face to face with all his old, suppressed feelings of love. Can he hope to secure Diane's affections again? And what of the complication of his son?
While "The House Part" was a pleasant enough read, it suffered from having too many things going on. This meant that the author was unable to focus with real depth on the subplots -- in this case, the more interesting subplots. The main focus of this novel was the Diane-Lord Cartwright-young Steven subplot. Unfortunately, while Diane was an engaging and appealing heroine, the same cannot be said for Baron Cartwright, who came across as a stiff and arrogant man. His frequent dismissal of his son was a tad grating, and the author's later bid at explaining the coolness between father and son didn't really cut any ice with me. And truth to tell, the very young and immature Steven, was a better drawn character -- one even got the sense that with a few more years and maturity, that young Steven would be a hero to contend with -- and even the baron's dead father made more of an impression, than the baron did. The character that stole the book, however, was the cynical and sarcastic Sir Cyrall, who displayed unexpected depths, intelligence and sensitivity, and literally carried the book. Unfortunately, his romance subplot took on shades of the gothic, and was more "told" than "shown." The other two romance subplots left a lot to be desired as well. (And I really couldn't understand why the supposed bluestocking of the book, Eustacia Fairchild, never bothered to figure out why her friend never bothered to figure out the significance of her name and why her friend, Rafe, refused to call her by her given name, until the very end of the novel. It's the sort of totty-headed behaviour bluestockings frequently indulge in in these Regencies, and which usually drive me to fits of exasperation! )
The real trouble was that because the main romance subplot proved to be a rather uninteresting one for me, I had counted on the other subplots to pull me in. But because these were minor subplots were really background fillers for the main storyline, they were not properly developed, so that the overall effect was that this was a nice read but that something, ultimately, was lacking. On the other hand, "The House Party" was a very well written novel, with some fairly interesting and appealing characters (namely Diane and Sir Cyrall), so that all in all I'd vote this as an averagely good 3 star read.

Learning to design objects effectively with Java is the goal of Beginning Java Objects: From Concepts to Code, an intensive yet approachable guide to object design, using UML and today's hottest programming language. Plenty of titles dig into the Java language in massive detail, but this one steps back and looks at object design first. The details of Java, from basic language features to a simple tutorial for building user interfaces in Swing, emerge only after a thorough tour of thinking in objects.
The book takes readers through object design, from the very beginning, at a relaxed pace. While you get all of the necessary jargon for really learning the object paradigm (for example, there's full coverage of such concepts as data encapsulation, inheritance, and polymorphism), the tutorial is likely to reach more readers. Without being doctrinaire about the design process, the author walks you through the steps for "discovering" objects in a business problem (including classes, attributes, and operations) and then determining how these objects work together to model real-world problems. The sample class diagrams offer quite a rich level of detail, and a single case study for a student course registration database demonstrates the design principles, including extensive class diagrams.
By the end of the book, this set of classes is transformed into working Java code, with a simple Swing-based user interface. Although the book cuts a few corners--such as using tab-delimited data instead of JDBC (a must for business programmers)--there's little doubt that this lively approach to mastering Java will benefit a wide range of readers. If ever you've been unsure about what object-oriented design really means, Beginning Java Objects can demystify important concepts and put the power of objects within your reach. --Richard Dragan

Customer Reviews:
This book really brings it all together!.......2006-02-01
I had the first edition of Beginning Java Objects From Concepts to Code sitting on my bookshelf for about 4 years. Meanwhile, I've taken several different Java training courses ranging from beginner to advanced level. I've been part of a development team, and although my role has generally been more of a business subject matter expert, I have also gotten my hands dirty and done some large chunks of coding, debugging, and refactoring other people's code.
So what's my point? Well, although I've gotten by well enough in a pretty intense OO/Java environment, I've always felt like it was exactly that - getting by. I finally took this book off the shelf and worked my way through ALL of it over the last couple of weeks, and it really pulled things together for me in a way that nothing else has done. I've read about half of Eckel's Thinking in Java (a couple of times), and most of Deitel's Java How to Program, among others, and they're really great at what they do, but I wish I had worked through ALL of this book before (or at the same time as) reading those. Even though I already had a good understanding of Java syntax, this book helped me understand more than just the syntax of "System.out.println()".
I've seen a couple of reviewers comment on Jacquie Barker's friendly tone, and I certainly agree with those reviewers. I felt like she was a trusted colleague helping me along, but not talking down at all.
One program is enough.......2005-11-23
Regarding Brad's comment, the 'one program' is complex enough to give the reader a lot of practice in understanding the relationships between objects, and that seems to me (an out-of-practice former COBOL programmer) to be the biggest hurdle in understanding object-oriented programming. Barker's book gives more help in this area than the other Java books I've read. I read Eckel's Thinking in Java, and got lost by the middle of the book. Once I've finished Barker, I think I'll get a lot more out of Eckel.
an OOP design book that uses Java.......2005-09-23
I got this book from reading the user recomendations here. I just want to warn people this book is about 900 pages long, and the whole book goes into making just one program (a student registration program for a university). If you have the patience to read a book like this, fine, but for me its a little too drawn out, and nothing I saw thumbing through the chapters jumped out as being interesting or trying to make a point. I have read "Head First Java" and recommend that book for someone who is trying to make sense of OOP.
Edit: I want to update this review by saying that I was too rash in critisizing this book. This book does do a good job of explaining how to plan and organize object oriented constructs to address real world problems rather than just a nuts and bolts overview of OO syntax that most other Java books give. This book however is not a "how to program in Java" book. You are going to have to move on to other Java books to become proficient in coding.
Worthy update to first edition.......2005-08-18
Significant content added over the first edition - and a great intro to j2se5 - nice tips on using collections, enumerations and new input/output functions.
What I enjoy about this book is that it's a real pleasure and you get java + oo knowledge transfer all in one book, no other comes close IMHO.
