Book Description
Stein and Bickers explore the policy subsystems--links among members of Congress, interest groups, government agencies--that blanket the American political landscape. They employ a new data base detailing federal outlays to Congressional districts for each federal program to examine four myths about the impact of policy subsystems on American government: that policy subsystems are a major contributor to the federal deficit, that federal programs grow and rarely die, that subsystem actors seek to universalize the scope of program benefits, and that the flow of program benefits to constituencies ensures legislators' reelection.

drumming at the edge of magic.......2005-09-09
it was recieved in a very timely manner - no complaints at all and in fact I would gladly do business with this vendor again!
Incredible book.......2002-05-20
I am not a Deadhead, nor am I a drummer, but I have really admired this book, and Mickey Hart big time. He really went off the deep end of his knowledge of percussion, both conventional, and exotic. I had not had this book with me since 1995, so my mind is a bit foggy, but if I remember right, the book is also a trip down Memory Lane, speaking of the hippie days of the Haight-Ashbury, The Grateful Dead and the whole scene in general. One of my favorites was of a drum he got in Tibet made from human skulls. He was wondering why he felt like he was being cursed, and he was told that he was using the drums wrong and it was used to wake the dead. He decided to return the drums and get a similar one not made of skulls. Drumming at the Edge of Magic was also a tie-in to what was then Mickey Hart's latest CD called At the Edge. This book really makes me wished I was there with the hippies and the Deadheads, even if I, myself don't listen to the Dead. It's too bad the Dead isn't around anymore thanks to Jerry Garcia's untimely death. Whether you're a Deadhead or not, whether you're a percussionist or not, this is truly an enthusiastic and well-written book on the subject of percussion.
Not just for drummers........2001-01-11
At a glance, Drumming at the Edge of Magic may seem like an autobiogrphical journey by the Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart. While the book is autobiographical, it goes far beyond that to discover the real meaning of drumming and music in general.
The meaning of drumming (or life?) comes in many forms, and many disguises. As Hart begins to unluck the secrets to why humans desire to express themselves in music, one can't help but say, "YES!". Hart, and to a certain extent, Jay Stevens, put into words what drummers and other musicians have felt all along but have never known how to express. The journey ends up being a look inward; not just for Hart but for the reader as well.
After reading this, I had my wife and father read it. I explained, "This is how I feel about drumming."
The companion CD and sequel book, "Planet Drum," are nice additions but the book stands by its self as an outstanding source for understanding music at its most basic form.
This book will move you.
this book changed my whole approach to drumming.......2000-07-08
I'd lost interest in playing for about 5 years before I read this book, but Mickey Hart's book brought me back to the reasons I started hitting the bottom of tin cans woth a wooden spoon! This book follows, to a degree, the history of drums, and studies the emotional, spiritual and physical effects of drums, old ancient, and new on people. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes to play for any or no reason, and to andone who can't explain why the music makes them dance.
A Comprehensive Introduction to the Rhythm other-world.......2000-06-25
Drumming At The Edge of Magic is a truly inspirational book for all people interested in drumming and rhythms. It details Harts cathartic exploration and eases the modern drummer into other-worldly potentials.

Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood
ASIN: 189795932X |
Book Description
Throughout southern Africa, shebeens are where jokes are born, news is embellished and exchanged, fights erupt and subside. They are unique vantage points where men go after a day's work, both to escape from the troubled world around them and to observe and comment on it.
In Shebeen Tales, Zimbabwe's leading author offers a view of his country not from the privileged and insulated perspective of the foreign correspondent of well-heeled visitor, but that of the ordinary person who, with the help of dry wit and illegal beer, pokes fun at the rich and mighty. Struggling against drivers, pompous bureaucrats and the other woes of life in the city, the man in the shebeen sees modern Africa as it really is, not as press releases or tourist brochures would have us believe.
Chenjerai Hove looks straight in the eye of a society suffering from drought, economic hardship and AIDS, but does not succumb to despair. With a wry sense of humor, his writer's pen celebrates a people who continue to live life to the full, to laugh and sing, to tell tall tales-whatever is thrown at them.
Chenjerai Hove, who was born in 1956, is Zimbabwe's leading novelist; his books include Bones and Shadows. His work has been translated into German, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, French, Portuguese and Japanese.

Hard to find, worth the wait.......2001-04-28
I learned of this book through reading Mr. Hove's editorials in the Zimbabwe Weekly Standard online. He is an outstanding writer and this book is a series of essays on Zimbabwean life in the 1990s. For anyone who is interested in what is happening there now, the book provides essential background. The country's problems are not new. It is often difficult for American readers to find books by contemporary African authors, and I highly recommend this one. I also recommend checking out Zimbabwe's independent papers on the Web: The Standard, the Daily News, the Independent, and the Financial Gazette. Congress is now pushing through major legislation on Zimbabwe, and the U.S. press barely mentions the country. The British press focuses on limited aspects of the situation. Read what this author has to say, he knows what he's talking about.
A must read for anyone interested in Africa.......1999-04-05
I read this after I left Zimbabwe, and it brought back so many memories of that beautiful country, full of resourceful people. This book is a snapshot of Zimbabwe in the 1990's, that examines so many aspects of the richly vibrant capital of Zimbabwe, Harare.

One of my favorite reference works.......2001-06-28
"The Sci-Fi Channel Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction" is an impressive achievement by co-authors Roger Fulton and John Betancourt. The book is a guide to dozens of science fiction TV series dating from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The authors include British and U.S. series (as well as a few productions from elsewhere). A nice touch is the inclusion of children's series and short-lived series (such as TV's "Planet of the Apes" and "The Fantastic Journey"). Fantasy, as well as sci-fi, series are included.
For the main series profiled, the authors provide an introductory article as well as a complete episode guide. For each episode, they give a plot summary, as well as writing, directing, and guest-starring credits.
Not all the series are given such detailed attention; some only have the episode titles listed, and some don't even get that. In general, shows that get less comprehensive attention are shows that are primarily thought of as representatives of another genre: "Bewitched" (sitcom), "The Six Million Dollar Man" (action/adventure), etc.
Despite its sometimes incomplete nature, this is a wonderfully informative and entertaining book. Sci-fi staples and cult favorites are well represented: "Babylon 5," "Blake's 7," "Quantum Leap," "Star Trek" and its various sequels, "The X-Files," etc. I particularly liked the ample attention given to short-lived shows that were nonetheless loved by devoted circles of viewers.
Of course, a book of this nature is generally out of date by the time it hits the bookshelves, so I am already anticipating a new edition. But until then, this book remains in an honored position in my library.
If you love SF, especially TV SF, you will enjoy this book........1999-07-28
I'm a life-long fan of Science Fiction who was raised with TV as my primary grow light, and as such, I gotta tell you that THE SCI-FI CHANNEL ENCYCLOPEDIA OF TV SCIENCE FICTION, by Roger Fulton & John Betancourt, it is pretty cool. It contains lots of information about all those great--and even not-so-great--Science Fiction, horror, and fantasy TV shows that we SF fans all love and cherish, including some stuff on obscure, nearly forgotten shows like NBC's short-lived SF comedy QUARK. There are also program guides for a lot of the shows listed, with air dates and short episode synopses.
While I really like the book and think it is a must for any serious fan of SF, there are, alas, a few shortcomings--but only a few. For one, it does not contain an entry for BORIS KARLOFF'S THRILLER, which is surprising not only because the show is an American classic, but also because the show itself is currently broadcast on the very network that is sanctioning this book. Also, fans of certain less-popular but relatively recent shows may be disappointed to find that the entry for those shows do not include an episode guide (e.g., THE FLASH or THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY, JR.). I must also mention that there are a few mistakes in the book's Table of Contents, but this is only a minor annoyance and is easy to surmount.
In short, if you love SF, especially Television SF, you will enjoy this book.
An incomplete "complete guide".......1999-05-16
While the book jacket calls this "The SCI-FI Channel Encyclopedia of TV Science Fiction," it is more a product of England's TVTimes. It is a very good resource for British SciFi and, for the price, is worth owning for that reason alone. However it is more notable for what it omits than what it includes. Space limits a point by point critique, but two things became apparent almost immediately. First, it does not have an index. While, like most encyclopedias, it is in alphabetical order, with out a comprehensive index it is impossible to cross reference information. Second, It has many glaring omissions. No work can be total, but the history of TV Sci-Fi is not that long. In the whole realm of TV shows, few are Sci-Fi, so a complete list should not be that hard to assemble. The authors have made a good try, but where they fall short is questionable. If "Journey to the Unknown" is classified as Sci-Fi, why is "Thriller" omited? If Sci-Fi comedy such as "Captian Nice" and "Holmes and Yoyo" listed, where is "My Living Doll," "Mr. Terrific," or "It's About Time"? Why didn't the "Star Lost" make it to the "41 obscure Shows. . ." list at the end of the book? The inside jacket says that, "no true SF fan should be without this up-to-date reference guide." In reality, any true SF fan will find this book cute but annoying. And any casual TV fan looking to add to their reference library would do better buying "The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network TV Shows." It tends more to deliver what is promised
This book has too many omissions........1999-04-10
A hastily-updated version of an older book originally published in Britain, it lacks guides for dozens of shows such as Beyond Reality, Tales from the Darkside, Goosebumps, Friday the 13th, Probe, Starman, Misfits of Science, etc. Even when shows are covered, they often consist only of a list of episode titles, e.g. Tekwar, Forever Knight, Captain Power, Wild Wild West, VR.5, Are You Afraid of the Dark, Hercules and Xena. Sometimes the listing is woefully incomplete: the book covers only 10 of the 65 episodes of Ray Bradbury Theater and only 13 of the 96 episodes of One Step Beyond. And you can forget it if you're looking for episode info on old shows such as Space Patrol, Rocky Jones Space Ranger, Flash Gordon, World of Giants, Commando Cody, or Way Out. Even some shows currently running on the Sci-Fi Channel, such as Boris Karloff's Thriller, are not covered. If you're willing to spend a little more, get Alan Morton's "Complete Directory" instead.
Great book - really nice episode guides. Useful........1999-03-12
I really like this book - I keep it next to my TV and use it to note down which shows I have in my collection, just a checkmark and a tape number next to the episode guides.
I understand it's an update of a British book -- seems very current, it even has shows like The Burning Zone and Homeboys in Outer Space.
-- Dave Kraye
Book Description
With up-to-date coverage of modern architectural approaches, this handbook provides a thorough discussion of the fundamentals of computer organization and architecture, as well as the critical role of performance in driving computer design.
Captures the field’s continued innovations and improvements, with input from active practitioners. Reviews the two most prevalent approaches: superscalar, which has come to dominate the microprocessor design field, including the widely used Pentium; and EPIC, seen in the IA-64 architecture of Intel's Itanium. Views systems from both the architectural and organizational perspectives. Includes coverage of critical topics, such as bus organization, computer arithmetic, I/O modules, RISC, memory, and parallel processors.
For professionals in computer product marketing or information system configuration and maintenance.
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely terrible. .......2007-10-01
This book is beyond terrible. I have a B.S. in Computer Engineering, and looked at this book to help a friend out. I've never seen such a poor computer organization book. There are seriously no examples at all. End of chapter problems are impossible to do based on the information presented.
If you are in a Computer Organization course, beg and plead with your professor to choose a book that you will learn from such as the Hennessy and Patterson book:Computer Architecture, Fourth Edition: A Quantitative Approach.
If you don't already know it, you won't learn it here.......2006-12-09
This is not a textbook for the beginner. This is probably not even a textbook for an intermediate. At best, this book is only useful as a reference for those people who are already very familiar with the material.
The text and the power point slides available on the website do contain useful information. However, the problems at the end of each chapter are totally indecipherable. They relate only vaguely to the material presented in the chapter. The questions are very specific about information not even hinted at in the text or in the slides.
There are several cases where large flowcharts and connection diagrams are presented with only a general explanation. The parts of the computer currently being examined are named and their general functions are briefly described. The problems then ask very specific questions about the inner workings of computer electronic components. There is absolutely no information given anywhere that in any way relates to solving these problems. The reader is asked to figure it all out on his or her own. There are exactly zero examples.
I would not recommend this book for an undergraduate student under any circumstances. It may be useful for a graduate student in computer engineering or a professional designing computer circuitry.
Otherwise, avoid this book at all costs.
This book is now in its 7th edition. The website notes that four editions, including this one, have been given the "Best Computer Science and Engineering Textbook of the Year" award by the Textbook and Academic Authors Association. The website mentions nothing about what the students thought of it.
A great book........2006-08-07
A good book to get started with the fundamentals of computer organization and architecture. The author keeps us up-to-date with the state of the art developments in the area. I recommend it for a text book or a handy reference.
Book Description
This book provides a clear, comprehensive presentation of the latest developments in the organization and architecture of modern-day computers, emphasizing both fundamental principles and the critical role of performance in driving computer design. A basic reference and companion for self-study, it conveys concepts through a wealth of concrete examples highlighting modern CISC and RISC systems. A five-part organization covers: an overview, the computer system, the central processing unit, the control unit, and parallel organization. For computer engineers and architects, product marketing personnel in computer or communications companies, and for information systems and computer systems personnel.
Customer Reviews:
Not a good book.......2007-05-25
I followed this book in my undergraduate studies and what I remember very precisely is that I did not like it. William Stallings's way of writing is always dry, i.e., reader does not feel it interesting to read. This is by far the biggest negative aspect of this book. In addition, it is difficult to follow as well.
There are far better options there, the best one is Computer Organization and Design by Patterson and Hennessy.
A comprehensive book.......2006-10-28
This book is really comprehensive and up-to-date. It covers the subject in sufficient details with good examples and illustrations. The main problem of the book is that it is too dry and not very easy to read.
Difficult to understand.......2006-02-09
The concepts are difficult to understand, the book is dry and the information is less than insightful and implementable. My first computer science course required this book and without the professor's assitance I do not believe that I would have fully grasped the main points the book attempted to convey. This is a poor book when it comes to teaching students the basics of computer organization and architecture, and its implementation will require additional sources and teaching.
excellent text.......2003-07-26
This is an excellent text that I'm using in a junior-level computer architecture course. It covers popular modern architectural and microarchitectural techniques (e.g., register renaming and predicated instructions) in detail suitable to undergraduates - while not focusing on a particular instruction set as in some other undergraduate texts. It provides excellent coverage of memory hierarchies. Aspects of the IA-64, PowerPC, SPARC, and x86 architectures are used as examples. Lucid and well written - it is well suited for self-study.
obviously not edited well.......2003-07-23
First of all, this book is a very dry read; extremely boring. The concepts aren't very clear and the book as a whole is unorganized; the first chapters refer to things in later chapters and makes everything hard to comprehend. The questions in the back of the chapters are difficult to ansewr because the content of the chapters don't help in answering them. In addition, there is a countless amount of spelling errors and numerical errors in the book. And this is the 6th edition of the book!! I expected so much more from this!! It makes me angry that this book is so bad. The cover is nice though if you get the hardcover edition, but i suggest getting the cheaper international edition because there are no color diagrams in the entire book. What a waste of 100 dollars!!
