4 out of 5 stars Keynes is alive and well and living in Japan.......2001-10-12

This is an excellent little book. Posen, an increasingly influential monetary economist, gives us his view on what is wrong and what needs to be done in Japan. While this effort was published in late 1998, the diagnosis and medication prescribed are the same now as then.

In Posen's view, all but one of the economic stimulus packages unveiled in the 1990s was equivalent to pouring money down the drain. Government money either wasn't spent at all because regional and municipal governments are bust or money was thrust at wasteful construction industries which add nothing to GDP. Also, monetary policymakers have decided that their new independence means they should do exactly the opposite to what everyone outside the BOJ thinks they should do. So policy is in a state of paralysis.

Posen argues that Japan needs aggressive stimulus, both through fiscal and monetary policy channels. In his view, there is nothing terribly wrong with Japan - a very different view from consensus. He also shows that BOJ fears of igniting inflation if they loosen monetary policy aggressively are complete nonsense.

This isn't a happy read for amateurs. It's quite in depth and needs some knowledge of the dismal science. It's very mainstream or Keynesian, just in case you were wondering. But it's a good read nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Relevant.......1999-07-24

Posen does a good job of presenting his case that the Japanese recession can be alleviated through the effective use of fiscal policy. He supports his argument well by employing statistical evidence and economic tools.

I believe, however, that Posen fails to address the psychological effect the current recession is having on the Japanese government & people. Structural Reform is being instituted rapidly because stagnation has brought about the realization that the current system needs serious overhaul.

It also seems to be the case that fiscal policy needlessly pours money into the inefficient construction sector, leading to undesirable consequences in terms of sectoral allocation.

Overall, Posen makes a strong argument in favor of fiscal policy. Hopefully he will update his book to explain the current apparent recovery of the Japanese economy.

        Book Description

Christian Ragacs develops new contributions to the theory of minimum wages, while taking rationing and spill-over effects on markets other than the labour market into account. Following an introduction into the theory of minimum wages and a discussion of methodological problems, four new theoretical models are developed; two of them comparative static in nature and two models of endogenous growth. The results are contradictory--partly supporting the "textbook" theory and partly yielding unorthodox results, such as no change in the steady state rates of growth and employment.

        Book Description

All golfers know they don't need to play golf. The problem is they don't know how to quit. Golf has a beginning, a middle, but no end. The game has no exit strategy. Every time you even think of quitting, golf entices you back with a 250-yard drive down the middle, an unfathomable recovery shot to the green, or a birdie on the hardest hole, as if to say, "You're almost there, just a little more work and you'll get it. Any day now you'll have the game figured out, and when you do you'll be the envy of all."

But it's not going to happen. You know it. Your partner knows it. Everyone knows it because no one gets any better at this game (except that guy you're playing against this Sunday).

How to Quit Golf offers the guidance, counseling, and tough love that is necessary to rid your life of the most addictive, demanding, and maddening game known to man. If you haven't been able to break the cycle of golf addiction, this is your bible. And if quitting isn't an option, Craig Brass's "12-Step Program" makes clear that laughing is.

        1 out of 5 stars Golf jokes - recycled.......2006-11-21

The book reads like a compendium of golf jokes gathered while drinking beer with your friends at the local pub.

Understanding some of the dry wit is similar to trying to comprehend an inside joke...while being on the outside.

I would not recommend this title.

4 out of 5 stars Another obcession to admit to.......2003-02-26

Unlike a George Carlin humorous rant at everything and everything, it's tough maintaining a high level when dealing with only one subject. That's why this book has its hilarious ups and somewhat tedious downs: from practicing your swing in elevators (I personally like bathroom mirrors while dripping wet) to the Bobby Jones chapter. But overall, well worth reading especially for AA members who have the double whammy of being hooked on the game and will really appreciate the tongue in cheek comparison.

4 out of 5 stars Tongue in Cheek Look at a Passionate Game.......2002-02-07

Places this game from Scotland in the light of twelve step addiction programs. Highlights the borderline addict (at least) in everyone of us passionate about this great game. Why do we continue to toruture ourselves? This fun book delves into this, poking fun as would a standup comedian in a nightclub would take shots at the audience.

I teetered on this one--from two to four starts, likely because the book itself surges from good to average or slightly below. Reaching its high pint in chapter five, it then descends into the kind of cheap, over exaggerated category of humor we have come to in our times. Sex oriented with reference after reference to different items and people that I became saturated with this. Much of the talk about club throwing, gimmick helps, etc. seemed like they could easily have come out of a brainstorming session by a high school golf team holed up in the clubhouse waiting out a rain.

Sprinkled in the high-point chapters however are some great one-liners, e.g. "Golf if like a sting operation, setting you up at every turn."

Enjoyed more the creative side of books such as: Flatbellies, Enchanted Clubs, the Greatest Golfer who Never Lived and A Mulligan for Bobby Jobe.

5 out of 5 stars Read and be saved!.......2001-12-04

Mark Twain once described golf as "a good walk spoiled." Accurate as Twain was in revealing the insidiously evil nature of this addictive pastime, he stopped short of explaining why so many people were willing to spoil their walks despite vowing at the end of each round never to touch another club.
Craig Brass, mercifully, has done what Samuel Clemens could not. He has exposed golf for what it is: a heroin derivative. What else could explain the shakes I get when the weather is nice, the grass is green, and I'm stuck in the office? What else could explain my need to sneak out on a weekend with the flimsy and transparent excuse, "I'm going to run some errands," as my wife gives me a shameful stare?
I admit it. I'm addicted. Author Brass has empowered me to face the problem and do something about it. Namely, quit the game.
No longer will I suffer the humiliating laughter of "friends" after gagging on an 18-inch birdie putt. No longer will I helicopter a 3-wood into the top of Indiana's tallest tulip poplar after worm-burning a brand new Titleist into a mosquito-infested swamp. No siree, not me. No more. I quit. I can do it. Just follow the 12 steps and keep the faith. I can quit.
Alright... well, no I can't. No one can. As Brass explains, we're all just puppets at the end of strings being pulled by the golf gods. We are at their capricious mercy, and they have precious little. Oh sure, they give you the occasional chip-in from off the green. But that's just to keep you coming back.
I read Craig Brass's book in one evening, and I laughed til I cried. I cried because a) the book is funny, and b) I recognized that Brass was describing me - and many of my friends. His writing is cynically witty (like Twain) and, thank heavens, he does not just resort to the same dried-up old golf jokes you've heard a million times. His approach is fresh. His evidence is convincing. More than a few golf widows will want to stuff their husbands' stockings with this gem. It's probably the next best thing to professional intervention.
In fact, I'm writing this review having just come in off the golf course. Now on a beautiful 55-degree December day in South Bend, Indiana (where it's normally closer to 55-below), I could have been stringing Christmas lights on my house, or finishing some holiday shopping for my wife. But no. I played golf. I pretzeled a driver around a yard arm after cold-topping a Nike Tour Accuracy into a lake. I vowed never to play again. But the weather report for tomorrow looks pretty good . . .

        5 out of 5 stars Finally!.......2001-11-29

Hillarious! This guy has obviously suffered through all the phases of golf addiction and has hit upon the only treatment that can cure - an honest look at how ridiculous we amatures are to think that we can beat the game. Get this book for every golfer you know that takes the game way too seriously. They probably still won't quit, but they just might become easier to live with after reading it.

2 out of 5 stars Buy Earl Palmer's Book Instead Of This.......2001-09-21

As a top session drummer since the late 1950's, Hal Baine has played on over 40 number one hit records. You would think he would have enough material from all that experience to write five books the size of this one.

There are a few insights here. For example, Hal Blaine played on some of the Beach Boys' records, and he describes Brian Wilson's unusual piano style. Rather than play a bass line with his left hand and chords and melody with his right, like most piano players, Wilson played chords with both hands and the notes he played with his right hand were the harmony parts for the rest of the group to sing.

More often the book disappoints. You would think that the studio band was called the "Wrecking Crew" because they were unbeatable musicians right? Well according to Blaine they were called the "Wrecking Crew" because they didn't wipe out the ash trays and left the recording studio untidy when they were finished for the day.

The biggest problem with this book is what it leaves out. There just isn't as much new and interesting information here as there should be given the number of sessions Blaine played on. I suspect that the author is holding back. He seems like he doesn't want to disclose too much in his book because it might jeopardize future drumming gigs, so his loyalty is primarily to his past (and possible future) employers rather than to his readers.

The book is pleasant and easy to read, but if you are interested in this subject I would suggest that you read Earl Palmer's book first. Palmer is also a drummer and a contemporary of Blaine's. While Blaine is bland and pleasant, Palmer is swaggering and arrogant, and decidedly more interesting.

2 out of 5 stars Dull and superficial.......2000-07-07

As much as I enjoy a lot of the music Hal Blaine has contributed to, I found little to enjoy about this book. Blaine offers nothing interesting or insightful about himself or the music business, just superficial outlines of his life and some of the people he worked with. He's curiously vague about the details of his own life (he either got his own birthdate wrong or consistently misstated his age by a year in the early part of the book, and he talks about women he married without even mentioning their names), and he seems to have little real knowledge of the performers he worked with (he repeats the erroneous claim that Mama Cass died from choking on food, for example, and a whole chapter about working with the Monkees actually covers a Mike Nesmith project that had nothing to do with the Monkees). He also played with some of the most popular pop/rock groups of the 1960s and 1970s (the Byrds, the Carpenters, Simon & Garfunkel), but none of them merits even a single mention in the book.

If Blaine had an interesting story he wanted to tell, he should have found a better collaborator.

4 out of 5 stars Music Industry Legend Remembers.......1999-12-29

This is a great book if you are a fan of '60s music. Hal helped lay the foundation for much of it. He also heavily influenced many drummers who followed, including Keith Moon of the Who. He outlines his musical training, inspiration, and dues paying. He features amusing anecdotes about working with legends of the industry, including Phil Spector, Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, and Sinatra. It makes you realize how much credit he, along with other members of studio musicians known as the "Wrecking Crew", deserve for shaping their artists' visions, as their improv and input helped make those records so great. A must-have, especially if you are a drummer or ever wished you could be one. They don't make 'em like Hal anymore.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful behind-the-scenes view of a great era in music.......1998-10-14

I originally purchased this book after finding out that Hal Blaine was the most recorded musician in musical history: I knew that there had to be something "magical" about his talents! The book did much to reveal at least a bit of that magic: a great sense of humour, a love for the craft, and an abiding respect for the musicians he played with.

Now, I find it impossible to listen to music from the sixties and early seventies without saying to myself "Aha -- that's a Hal Blaine track". The Beach Boys, the Byrds, Neil Diamond, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra...even my all time favorite song, the Cascades "Rhythm of the Rain"...all have been graced by his exceptional drumming.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is interested in the creative process -- musical or otherwise.

Also included is a list of all the top-ten songs he was involved in: the list is four pages long (!)

The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that I wish it were longer .

I have been a huge fan of Paul Frees ever since I found out who he was. This book paints a remarkable picture of one of the great voice artists of all time. Speaking of painting, the picture he is standing next to on the cover is one he did - a talent I had no idea he had until I read the book.

5 out of 5 stars A revealing look at the life of Paul Frees.......2007-06-02

I bought this book simply to read about Paul Frees' involvement with Disneyland and was quickly amazed at his career. A really enjoyable read, revealing both the good and bad. In other words - an honest look at a fabulous artist. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Unknown Face of 1000+ Voices We All Have Heard.......2007-03-14

Unlike many, I had known about Paul Frees being the man of multiple voices. The famous voice of the Disney Haunted Mansion ride "Ghost Host," Boris Badenov of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and the narrator of the original "War of the Worlds" movie are but a few of this man's familiar characters. What I did not realize, however, was how well known, and in demand he was during his entire lengthy career. I learned, but was not surprised to find out, how many hours and productions he had participated in on the radio. Furthermore, I found it interesting that just about anytime any film maker needed to come up with an exotic voice, or wanted someone to finish up another actor's dialogue, they called Paul Frees. I learned all of this by reading his biography, "Welcome, Foolish Mortals," which is the tagline for the Disney Ghost Host.

Anyone wishing to read about the career of a person of outstanding versatility and talent, should read this book. The composition of the book is smooth, and the narrative sustains one's continuing curiosity and interest. I wish that the author had interviewed, and provided more quotes from more people in show business still living that had worked with him professionally. I would have liked, for example, if the author had spoken with surving personnel from the Disney organization, or individuals from companies for whom he had worked as a vocal pitchman. Pillsbury, for example, comes to mind; Frees was the voice of the Pillsbury Doughboy (of course, Frees was quoted as suggesting he did not want to be solely remembered as just being the Pillsbury Doughboy).

Compared to the late Paul Frees, there is no one his equal past or present. Even the great impressionist Rich Little must have been in awe of this incredible man. In his own field, he really was a Burgermeister Meisterburger!

In this nearly 300 page book, Ben Ohmart with help from some of Paul's friends and family, tells the life and times of Paul Frees...one of the most under-rated and one of the more mysterious figures in the word of voice acting. I named the review of this book "Natasha...stop moose and squirrel..." because of Paul's famous role as Boris Badenov on the cartoon, Rocky and Bullwinkle. I bought this book as soon as i learned it was on sale and i ALSO have the one Ben Ohmart wrote on Daws Butler. One of the things i loved about this book was the credits section. The author pin-pointed virtually everything he could find in which Paul Frees made an appearance. Paul was also a face-actor who appeared in a sting of movies as supporting player or walk-on but his voice was where he made his money. I also love the pictures that Ben Ohmart put in this book! You will find that Paul, upon reading this book, was a jack-of-all-trades. He could write, paint, sing, act...the author also goes "behind the scenes" and reveals aspects of Paul's personal life. But, the voices are what most readers will be interested in the most and Paul lent his voice to a staggering amout of projects through the years in radio, TV, and on records. On page 193 there's a priceless picture of Paul and Red Skelton during the recording session of the cartoon movie "Rudolph's Shiny New Year" in 1976, the year i was born! Paul and his famed female voice actor co-star, June Foray, are seen on page 174. On page 176, Paul is seen with Vincent Price. Paul had recorded some things for Price's horror movie "The Abominable Dr. Phibes"...in fact, the movie spawned a vinyl album/soundtrack of sorts in which Paul is heard singing several songs impersonating celebrities {Al Jolson; Humphrey Bogart; Ronald Colman; among others}. Paul Frees lived an interesting life and we haven't even began to talk about his years with Disney and UPA...his various commercial characters like The Pillsbury Doughboy and Tucan Sam OR his secret life as a spy!!! GET THIS BOOK TO READ MORE ABOUT THAT!! Paul Frees can be heard on countless cartoons on the Boomerang channel. I'd suggest you also seek out the DVD's of Rocky and Bullwinkle to HEAR Paul at his peak as Boris Badenov, Inspector Fenwick, and Captain Wrongway Peachfuzz...plus get this book to learn more about this under-rated legend.

5 out of 5 stars Informative with lots of examples in c# and vb.net.......2007-01-04

this book is just what I was looking for, when implementing some reporting functionality to our web app. The owc11 charting engine is powerful and flexible, and gives the developer a lot of control for customization. This book was very helpful, especially considering that there are not very many resources on the web on this topic.
I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to develop their own charting and spreadsheet controls. The book is a nice starting point with a clear explanation and lots of code touching up on a lot of the owc functionality.

5 out of 5 stars Must have OWC resource!!!.......2005-08-14

The book is extremely insightful and the code snippets are helpful. There is nothing out there that has helped me to even begin to understand the OWC as this book has. There is definitely a deficiency in resources for developers to use these controls using .NET and this book fills that gap!!! If you plan on using the OWC in windows or web forms, this book is a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding! A must have book!.......2005-05-14

I bought this book expecting it to be like the other O.W.C. books. This one is really worth it.
Lots of code examples and pictures. I found the material easy to read and definitely worth the price. I would strongly recommend this book for any body who wants to program using these components.

5 out of 5 stars The Microsoft Office Web Components Black Book with .Net.......2005-05-14

The Microsoft Office Web Components Black Book with .Net grew out of a desperate need for documentation on the Office Web Components. The Office Web components are fine pieces of software well suited for harvesting Microsoft Office functionality in web and windows applications. However, many developers are often frustrated by the lack of resources available. This book aims to address this need and is crafted primarily as a programming resource so the material is technical in nature but there are 2 chapters that discuss licensing and usage in non-technical terms. These chapters allow decision makers to quickly determine whether or not the components are suited to their need. For the developers, the book explores every angle of development for commercial applications. There is an abundance of code examples to help explain the concepts. But, the Black Book also discusses and implements wider strategies for using the components in Enterprise Software.
