Crap........2004-10-22

Unfortunately, I wasted my good money on this book. (Or rather, someone wasted it on me - I got it as a gift). The book is useless, and I own some of the synths the author writes about. To the reviewer who criticized the reviewer who gave a bad mark: guess what? The "low mark" reviewer was right, the user manuals ARE better than this crappy book. So before insulting a reviewer, why not actually bother to inform yourself. Sheesh.

I can't help but disagree with the negative review given. This is a great mid-level book for anyone just starting to understand the concepts of sound synthesis. The value in the book is that it ties alot of fundamental concepts together using current production tools in examples. Understand these concepts and you'll be off to the races, if you care to think for yourself. This'll give great incentive to really delve into the software manuals, which are informative if not initially overwhelming. Rock on!

For the author to post a review of his own book and then have the gall to give it 5 stars - he gets a big one star from me.

This is a book that is 98 pages; covering a complex set of hardware and a highly involved technique and he raves that this is the only book on the subject to help people owning the machines. How about mentioning that the user's manual for these machines covers more than his book by far and is written better as well.

Hi, I'm the guy who wrote this book, and I just wanted to point out that this is the only book on the market that really covers Grooveboxes, tabletop samplers and loop-slicing hardware. If you use the Roland MC-505, Boss SP-1, Korg Electribe ES-1, Yamaha SU200 or RS7000, this is the book you've been waiting for. Plenty of machine-specific coverage, lots of general tips and tricks applicable to any groove machine, and detailed chapters about looping software as well! I give it five stars, and I think you will, too.

real stories from reel actors.......2006-07-15

I heard Michael Bofshever speak at a Screen Actors Guild event recently. He has a genuine respect for the craft of acting, and over many years of being a professional actor, has come to terms with the realities of a career in 'the biz'.

The beginning of each chapter in this book is great at describing the various aspects of a working actor's career and everyday life. Then there are blurbs from actors whose faces really are 'familiar', like Marcella Lowery from 'The Cosby Show' or James Rebhorn from 'Talented Mr. Ripley'. The stories are fun and down-to-earth, and truly give you a picture of what the entire process of becoming a professional actor is like.

Because you are reading verbatim accounts from each person, you get many different perspectives on the types of successful careers one can have. It can be a little confusing sometimes to go from story to story, but all in all it's really informative and a fascinating read, for anyone interested in what it's really like to be an actor!

Of value for any actor.......2006-05-07

I think this is a pretty good book for any actor, regardless of what stage his career presently occupies. It is a realistic guide to the acting profession. As a professional returning to performing after 24 years on Wall Street, I found it a good reminder of many things I had forgotten. Bofshever gives knowledgeable advice on how to break in and, more important, how to stay in the acting business. Particularly valuable to me was the chapter on what to expect and how to behave once you report for work on a television or film sound stage. The book is divided into ten chapters in which Bofshever gives his views on a particular aspect of performing professionally (auditions, agents, acting teachers, day jobs, stage acting vs. film acting, mental health, etc.). At the end of each chapter, he quotes additional comments culled from interviews with other working actors about their experience. The 60 actors interviewed are all of different physical types, ethnicity and ages. Each of them has something worthwhile to say. The hardest part of the profession is the constant rejection and the long periods of unemployment. These actors have all been through it and their experience and advice is worth reading about. The life of an actor is a difficult one. Only the strong can take it. Bofshever's book can perhaps make it a little less painful. Four stars.

This book is oriented for those with basic knowledges of Excel and some general understanding of Visual Basic (Visual Basic 6 not Visual Basic .NET). However, the examples are simple, sequential and conductive for constructing basic applications even if you have never used Visual Basic before.

Let the Author, Mr. John Walkenback, take you through the first 7 Chapters, type in the examples as you go, and you will rip the benefits.

No real life examples.......2004-04-01

This book sucks! Its just a little better than the help file included in with Excel. All he does is put it in a diffrent order. I was expecting small excercises where I could put my new skills all together, but there is none. So you read the whole book, remember as much as you can, and go off and try to mix and match hundreds of commands... buy another one.

Excelent manual for intermediate and higher programmers!.......2004-02-20

This is a great manual for those who, at a minimum, have a limited knowledge of Visual Basic and a limited working knowledge of Excel. If you don't consider yourself an expert then this is the book for you!

I've taught myself multiple computer languages (English is my natural language but that doesn't really matter now, does it?) and am very familiar with Excel -- but not so much on the programming side of things. As far as being a VB programmer, well, about two or three years ago I taught myself VB 5.0 and then never ended up needing to use it. The first time I used this book was to help me with a VB module in a customers Excel workbook. There was even an example in this book about using the Windows API to get the window to search for a directory which I was able to easily incorporate into the code. I then started reading through the chapters and just kept on learning more and more! When working on a project I can easily find a relevant chapter/section that pertains to what I'm doing or need and solve my problem!

He clearly explains his code and if the example is a code snipet. The included CD contains his examples and other files which I find very helpful, especially when I don't want to type in everything myself :-)

If you even *think* this may be a candidate for your library then stop thinking and just get it!

Outstanding reference and how to manual for Excel macro programming. A must have for anyone who has ambitions of writing their own programs for Excel. John's clear, organized, and comprehensible writing style allows even a novice programmer to immediately begin to write Excel macros that really do something, and do something useful. His book is chock full of useful code examples. Get two copies. It is that good.

Excellent reference book for non-programmers.......2003-10-15

This book can be included in the handy tool category, a "must have" for non-programmers who want to give their Excel applications a professional look as well as get the most out of Excel without wasting much time and effort. Word of caution, a bit of familiarity with visual basic as a language and the controls etc. will be very helpful in using this book. Codes in the CD are very helpful. It is written by a practicing professional from usage point of view hence a very easy reading book and not heavy on the jargons of object oriented programming etc. I learned a lot of useful tricks after going through the book.
