incredibly knowledgeable.......2007-01-05
The uniqueness of this book written by Croteau and Hoynes is above all that they introduce two approaches in understanding the characteristics of modern mass media and the correlations between the media and the social forces including public opinion, commercial, political and cultural conditions. Based on the two different categories - Market and Public sphere - it helps better understand the significant role and effectiveness of media that generate not only the public opinion, but also its influences on the mainstream in politics, business, education, culture and society. These two authors provide profoundly useful and informative resources to grasp the key points of media's role and power in society based on two distinctive perspectives introduced in this book. The main concept of this book is basically about understanding the media and economies in market and public theory and how these two spheres differ from each other in terms of circulation of information and commercial activities. The authors categorize two different approaches in order to effectively analyze the media system and each of these ideas is very well organized and clearly explained along with suitable and apparent examples provided which demonstrate the importance and different evaluation in each concept. Additionally, thanks to the great job that the authors showed in this book, the contents in each chapter are really uncomplicated and even interesting to understand without any confusion. I definitely recommend this book to people who have interest in media especially considered from business and economic views.
In largely jargon-free and accessible terms.......2004-03-04
The expert collaboration of David Croteau (Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richard, Virginia) and William Hoynes (Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Vasser College, Poughkeepsie, New York), The Business Of Media: Corporate Media And The Public Interest is a candid revealing and detailed study of the rapidly evolving media industry, especially in an increasingly media-saturated society. A thoroughly scholarly work which deftly presents its in-depth study in largely jargon-free and accessible terms ideal for the non-specialist general reader, The Business Of Media offers insights and a close scrutiny into what really goes on behind newspaper and broadcast journalism headlines.

A "must read" for anyone interested in Labor & the Internet........1998-04-11
The book gives a great background on the Labor movements use of the Internet. I was interested because, as a member of the Campaign for Labor Rights (CLR) steering committee we have made extensive use of the Internet. We have set up a web site, an e-mail alert network, and communicate almost exclusively by e-mail. But I know very little about the history of organized labors use of the Internet. Not only does Eric's book give the essential history of Labors use of the Internet but he has an optimism about the future which we can all benefit from. He sees the opportunity for a "New Internationalism" developing because of this new technology. If labor can grab hold of this technology we can build cross border solidarity like we have never known before. I see what we at the CLR are doing as being on the cutting edge of this "New Internationalism". Most of us in the CLR are approaching this work from a little different direction (coming from the Central America Solidarity Movement) but we are moving in the same direction as the labor movement and their use of the Internet. It was interesting to see time and again the names of people we work with on a regular basis and get to know where they are coming from. Some of these people like Jagdish Parikh and Marc Belanger have extremely interesting histories in working in the labor movement and on the Internet. Reading this book gave me a much deeper appreciation of the people we work with. Much of the book focuses on concrete examples of how the labor movement uses the Internet to build a stronger and more democratic union. It is only with this technology that some things are made possible. For example, as corporations have become even more transnational there has developed a corresponding need for labor to respond internationally. You can't organize a company in one country if that company will shut down and move to another (unorganized and more repressive) country. Worker's of the world need to have the means to communicate with each other, compare notes and show solidarity. It has been prohibitively expensive to get workers in different countries to meet regularly and plan a strategy to confront multinational corporations. With the Internet workers can communicate frequently and inexpensively. There has never been a time like the present for workers to use technology to confront multi-national corporations. The labor movement is just starting to understand the potential of this technology. In addition to the above idea of online transnational company councils, we also learn about the International Labour University, an online International daily labor press, an online archive, discussion group and journal, and an Emergency Response Network (good idea huh Soren). In short this book is talking about building a "New Internationalism." I hope you will take the time to read the book for yourself. It is well worth your time.

"Chocano's book is unlike any relationship manual you'll ever read: It's intentionally hilarious."
DAN ZEVIN, AUTHOR OF THE DAY I TURNED UNCOOL
"In our quick-fix, feel-good culture, Carina Chocano provides an indispensable alternative: a guide to living a compromised, turbulent, and pitiably wrong-headed life. Her book is not so much a breath of fresh air as a whiff of something fetid and unseemly that has been left in the refrigerator too long. You will laugh, cry, read it aloud to your inadequate boyfriend, then cry some more. Quite a lot more."

Surpriseingly Good!.......2004-06-15
I dont ususally go in for this kind of thing but my godniece had a copy in the john and I read it and I'm damn glad I did. This writer is a smartalick but in a good way, alot like my niece which is probably why neither one of them will get a man any time soon. Now I'm way too old for the dating game, but this book had me cackling, right there in the john. Very irrevrant and witty, with lots of highfalutin language and observations. I'll look forward to any more books from this writer...maybe on a topic closer to home! How bout a book on fishing little missy!
Laugh out loud funny...and too true........2003-09-04
I'm sharing this little read with all my friends. I picked it up casually while on vacation and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I've never heard of the author before this, but she has a great talent for humor writing. And, she must have experience (and many single-adult friends) in the dating, cohabiting and everything-but-marriage realms because all her anecdotes rang all too true. I highly recommend it.
amazing.......2003-04-18
Carina Chocano is an amazing writer. This may be the funniest book I have ever read!!! My humor is pretty dry and sometimes jaded and, as I read, all I could think about is how I wish I was this clever. A very rare find. Much funnier than the typical 'humorist' writer.
Welcome sarcasm..
Anti-Guide to romance for the "living together" generation.......2003-03-26
Carina Chocano's charmingly poisonous Do You Love Me, or Am I Just Paranoid? is, in short, an anti-guide to dating. "Is there any advice contained in this book? Yes, but it's terrible."
The sly barbs of the Contents page had me hooked from the get-go, with such chapter titles as "You and Your Precious Feelings," and "The Five-Year Breakup Plan." Throughout most of this short book, Chocano attempts to explicate Serial Monogamy, a term of her own coinage denoting men and women who move in together for years with no intention of either breaking up or marrying, the two antipodes, she suggests, modern Americans regard with equal terror.
Chocano wields various weapons of humor with considerable skill: wild analogy (how fear of love is like being attacked by a marauding bear), esoteric classification systems (types of Dad to blame for life's problems: Absent Dad, Doting Dad, Sugar Dad, & Dad Who Can Beat Up Your Dad), and relevant juxtaposition (love or insane? The symptoms of each). Her mock-sardonic sentences have also been sharpened to that Marcel Proust/Nick Hornby perspicacious edge; namely, they force you to laugh out loud and announce, "it's so true!" to yourself every five minutes (even though no one's around, you dork).
Serial monogamists, Chocano hints, are intelligent people who may be too intelligent for their own good, dating addicts who crave one terrible relationship after another like junkie fixes. Rather than offer up the Methadone, however, Chocano revels wickedly in the illness: "No matter how trying the company of your current partner, it is important to remember that your own company, undiluted, may be even more loathsome."
Amatory missives by such literary lovers as Joyce, Kafka, and Charlotte Brontë are included, serving to illuminate, by contrast, the sorry state of modern romantic communication, which has only recently been saved by the rising importance of carefully-drafted emails: "Try to avoid overly long and clever responses, which will only make you seem dull-witted in person."
With Do You Love Me, or Am I Just Paranoid?, Carina Chocano may well have penned, in the history of Western letters, the first ever postmodern guide to love.
It's Funny But It's All So True!!.......2003-02-09
If you're a woman within shouting distance of 30 and not married, then you will see yourself in this book! Even if you never bought "The Rules" or "Bridget Jones" and her clones, you will laugh out loud when Chocano lists all the things you've seen go wrong before in your relationships but were too in love--then too lazy, to do anything about. This is a book for anyone who is a veteran of the relationship wars. Carina Chocano has found the funny, dark side of shacking up.
Book Description
Pixies are unquestionably the most influential rock band to come out of Boston in the late 80s. They are credited with influencing everyone from Nirvana to Radiohead to Weezer and countless others. With the coming of age of the alternative rock generation Pixies are finally getting their due. Trompe le Monde: The Oral History of a Band Called Pixies is the book that will document the bands place in rock history. The timing for this book is perfect, as Pixies are entering a renaissance after over a decade of posthumously but steadily increasing popularity and importance. The band reunited last year for one of the highest grossing tours of the year (ending in December) and released a best-of CD. Older fans were obviously hungry for more Pixies and their rocker appeal has brought them an entire new and younger audience. The reunion was so successful that theyre back on tour. Trompe le Monde will be the most definitive and cohesive book on early 90s rock ever written. It features never-before-seen interviews with the band as well as interviews with anyone and everyone from the world of 90s rock.

Fooled no more!.......2007-07-18
Being a big fan of a band that breaks up just after you discover them is gut wrenching! That's how I felt in the early 90's. Josh's book does what 1000 music magazine publications couldn't: it left me with more knowledge and respect for this band than I did before I picked it up. So much of the mystery behind this bands rise, fall and resurrection is revealed, and that's not a bad thing at all. An awesome read from start to finish! I'm a born again PIXIES fan. Neighbors beware!
entertaining.......2006-10-24
just bought the book and could not put it down. Interesting insight to the history of the "pixies".
Nearly perfect.......2006-09-06
This book's strengths far outweight its weaknesses. True, the flow is somewhat disjointed, Throwing Muses and its members get too much coverage, and the copy editing is somewhat sloppy. Nonetheless, the depth of Pixies coverage is amazing. I've been listening to them since Surfer Rosa came out, but they've always been an inscrutable band lyrically, musically, and in interviews. Frank's collection opens the curtain, and gives us a peek into the life and history of a band.
I enjoyed this book immensely.
As a Pixies fan I loved this book.......2006-08-16
I have been a Pixies fan my whole life. This band has meant so much to me and my wife accidentally stumbled onto this book. So I started reading it and I had problems putting it done. This is an oral account of the Pixies, it's all about people's feelings and emotions being told by those that were close to the pixies and that's after all what really matters when you're talking about a bands history. Nobody cares about what exact date they started (like someone in a previous review mentioned). It's the story that matters. I don't think anybody will be able to produce a more in depth look into the Pixies then this book provided.
Fooling around is good for the soul........2006-08-01
Fool the World is an excellent account of the birth, death and reincarnation of a band called The Pixies. A band that is one of the most important and influential yet underated bands in the history of rock n roll. Without the Pixies there would be no Nirvana, no White Stripes, no Screamo. For better or for worse they are a band that you need to know about and understand. The way that Fool the World is put together is brilliant. Interview segments from people like Courtney Love, J. Mascis, as well as band members themselves add the colour to the picture. There is also a directory of who's who for easy reference. Who else but someone who was there could remember a quote like "Fist I'm going to piss like a race horse and then dance like a black woman." The old magazine interviews with producer Steve Albini were wonderful to read. The fact that Kristin Hersh was dying to get the Pixies onto 4AD because she felt lonely being the only Yank on a Brit label is hilarious and finding out,in his own words, that Ivo Watts-Russell signed certain bands after being stuck in traffic with their tape is genius. Who would know those things except people that were there when it happend. Music fans, Pixies fans, and fans of pop culture check out this book.

Book Description
In The Body in Late-Capitalist USA, Donald M. Lowe explores the varied social practices that code and construct the body. Arguing that our bodily lives are shaped by a complex of daily and ongoing practices—how we work, what we buy and consume—Lowe contends that as a result of the commodification of these and other social practices in the late-twentieth century, what we often understand to be the needs of the body are in fact means for capital accumulation.
Moving beyond studies of representations and images of the body, Lowe focuses on the intersection of body practices, language, and the Social to describe concretely the reality of a lived body. His strongly synthetic work brings together Marxist critique, semiotics, Foucaultian discourse analysis, and systems and communications theory to examine those practices that construct the body under late capitalism: habits of work and consumption, the ways we give birth and raise children, socialization, mental and physical healing, reconstructions and contestations of sexuality and gender. Lowe draws upon a wide range of sources, including government and labor studies and statistics, diagnostic and statistical manuals on mental illness, computer manuals, self-help books, and guides to work-related stress disorders, to illustrate the transformation of the body into a nexus of exchange value in postmodern society.

Customer Reviews:
Best overall Wi-Fi Guide written............2007-04-11
Bold statement, I know, but in my opinion Jeff has done what many have not been able to do in the past; develop a guide that is both easy to follow and very complete. I would not hesitate to recommend this guide to my IT guys as well as someone looking to learn about Wi-Fi that may not even know where to start. Both would find this guide book the most valuable book on their shelf.
Masterful.......2006-01-12
One of the most comprehensive guides I've found to date. Easy to follow with excellent detail, offering explanations for various methods. A bright light for Wi-Fi instruction, it's an extraordinary volume. Both the novice and expert alike, would certainly find benefit from it well structured format.
Very Useful Book.......2005-09-01
Jeff has put together a extremely useful guide to wireless networking. It is well organized, allowing quick access to specific topics, and broad enough to cover most relevant issues for smaller (and maybe some medium sized) networks. He wisely discusses that which is truly important, avoiding complexity when it is not needed.
There is a considerable amount of practical advice, product information and helpful hints regarding installation, setup and security.
This is not likely very usable for a novice, but would be helpful for anyone who has at minimum a basic understanding of networks.
One of the best Wi-Fi guides
One of the best Wi-Fi guides.......2004-09-26
It's a toss-up for me between this book and O'Rielly's "Wi-Fi Hacks" book. Both books have up-to-date, well written content. The Hacks books is organized more aggressively into a set form that may or may not appeal to you. This book has a more traditional topic based organization.
Topics include antenna coverage and construction, operating system information and coverage of the different types of Wi-Fi security that are available.
I recommend this book for anyone serious about building their own Wi-Fi networks. I don't recommend this book, or O'Reilly Hacks, for someone just looking for how to get their computer on a wireless network. For that I would recommend a book specific to their operating system.
A "must-read" for Wi-Fi networking.......2004-08-29
Whether you're a newbie or a WiFi master, this book has something for you.
Jeff does a great job of taking the subject of Wi-Fi networking and breaking it down into basic, easy to understand elements. This book is a `must-read' for anyone interested in learning the ins and outs of the Wi-Fi world.
