      Book Description

Reported disaster losses have risen rapidly over the last few decades, triggering a growing awareness of the potential damage caused by natural hazards. However, there is limited knowledge or understanding of their broader macroeconomic significance or the problems they pose for long-term development.

Drawing on evidence from Bangladesh, Dominica and Malawi, Understanding the Economic and Financial Impacts of Natural Disasters explores these macro-economic and development issues. The report examines the short and long-term economic and financial impacts of natural disasters, the factors that contribute to underlying sensitivities, and identifies opportunities for improving the economic management of risk and disasters as they unfold.

      Download Description

This report explores the macro-economic and public finance implications of natural disasters, including the role of information and mechanisms for risk spreading, and drawing in particular on evidence from Bangladesh, Dominica and Malawi. Major natural disasters can have severe negative short-run economic and budgetary impacts. Disasters also appear to have adverse longer-term consequences for economic growth, development and poverty reduction. However, negative impacts are not inevitable: sensitivity to natural hazards is determined by a complex, dynamic set of influences. Vulnerability can shift rapidly, especially in countries experiencing economic transformation - rapid growth, urbanization, and related technical and social changes. The report concludes that in order to stem the rising cost of natural disasters globally, hazard risk management concerns need to be integrated into longer-term national investment policies and development strategies and appropriately reflected in the allocation of financial resources, including medium-term financial planning. The generation and dissemination of quality, reliable scientific information should be supported as part of this process. In addition, assessment of the economic and financial impacts of disasters should be extended to include a full reassessment 18 to 24 months after an event, generating vital information on the nature of impacts and underlying causal factors.

5 out of 5 stars A laugh at every subject .......2006-01-24

Like his teacher Uncle Milty , Henny Youngman had a line or a story for every subject you could think of. I can see him now fiddling away, then stopping , flinging out the joke, and then continuing to fiddle.
Henny did not always hit the mark, and the book has more than its share of clinkers, but there are lots of laughs here also, especially for those who remember Henny with affection.

5 out of 5 stars Do NOT order this book from Amazon.......2005-12-02

I give the book itself five stars, Amazon, no stars. They say this book is available in "3 to 4 weeks." Change that to "Never." I ordered it as a gift for my elderly uncle. Then waited. And waited. Amazon cheerfully kept pushing back the date the book would be delivered, for months and months and Months. What is the problem? If this book is in print, order it from the publisher! Finally my uncle went into the hospital and I figured he wouldn't want the book anymore. Amazon is very dishonest regarding this book, so do not order it unless you want to be disappointed!

          5 out of 5 stars A One Liner Treasury.......2000-11-22

For those who remember Henny Youngman, you will laugh yourselves silly reading through this book of some of his very best. It seems he has a one-liner for every occasion and best of all, he keeps us laughing without the use of four letter words that so many comedians today think necessary to be funny. This book is Henny Youngman at his best. A real treasury of great humor.

4 out of 5 stars "The Opera Bible"? Not hardly!.......2007-06-18

Sure this is a fine book for what it DOES cover. But, if you'll simply "search inside" (click Amazon's above image) and examine its table of contents, you'll readily discover that it only covers about half of Handel's operas, two of Cavalli's operas, and nothing whatsoever for numerous "minor yet noteworthy" composers.

By contrast, the 2001-edition "NEW Penguin Opera Guide" (or, better still, its original 1993 version, "The Viking Opera Guide") covers many, many, many more operas and includes biographical content for the composers.

Or, if money (and shelf space) is of little concern, consider the only other truly "comprehensive" encyclopedia of opera, "The New Grove Dictionary of Opera" (4-volume set). That is unarguably the ULTIMATE choice, albeit the single-volume "Viking" is a fairly close second, provided you only need a reference for, specifically, operas and their composers. ("The New Grove" covers those things PLUS operatic terminology; technique; history; venues; performers; and more.)

Me, I'm pleased to own BOTH the four-volume "New Grove Dictionary" AND the single-volume "Viking" guide. When it comes to genuinely "COMPREHENSIVE coverage of particular operas and their composers," there's basically nothing else available.

5 out of 5 stars The Opera Bible.......2002-11-28

It could be an exaggeration when I call the Kobbes Opera Guide a Bible for opera lovers. But it's a very resourceful book on operatic composers, performers and the rich history of opera from its early days in Baroque Italy. Everything you want to know is here...the opera comique style, Baroque masters such as Gluck and Handel, the Rossini operas, bel canto beauties such as the Donizetti operas, German operas and French operas. It is a very monumental source of information on singers as well, sopranos from the very talked about Maria Callas (1923-1977), Joan Sutherland, Beverly Sills, and recent singers as Renee Fleming and Sumi Jo, tenors Placido Domingo, Nicolai Gedda, Luciano Pavoratti, Jon Vickers, and their careers. A must have for any true opera buff. Immerse yourself into the stories of operas and its fascinating background in music.

5 out of 5 stars ease of reference greatly appreciated.......1999-01-06

The new format of this magnificent reference book is the most outstanding feature of this revised, updated work. The prior Kobbe's clumsily, but not wholly improperly , catlogued composers like a taxonomical excercise. The genus being the chronological era and the species is the nationality of the composer. Thus German composers in the nineteenth century with singular emphasis on Wagner are grouped; then Italian opera for that century, and so on through Europe. Then we come to the twentieth century and all over again with this format but encompassing the world by nation. The revised volume has nothing more outstanding than an alphabetical arrangement for the subjects, but how outstanding and important this seemingly simple change is cannot be overestimated. This is a required reference book for opera afficianados whatever level of knowledge of the subject one possesses.

                                  Book Description

The Media and the Tourist Imagination adopts a multidisciplinary approach to explore the interactions between tourism and media practices within a contemporary culture in which the consumption of images has become increasingly significant. The contributions are divided between those written from media studies awareness, concerned with the way the media imagine travel and tourism; those written from the point of view of the study of tourism, which consider how tourism practices are affected or inflected by the media; and those that attempt a direct comparison between the practices of tourism and the media. A number of common themes and concerns arise with particular emphasis upon the image as the object of consumption.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-08-23

We tend to forget all the lessons we learned watching the original Star Trek series, and Dave Marinaccio brings it all back with a lot of humor.

This book is a must for any original Star Trek fan. You can read it in one sitting, and then your friends will all be borrowing it. You may want to buy an extra just in case.

5 out of 5 stars what hasn't already been said........2007-07-01

as the tittle says, i cant really say anything that the other reviewers haven't said themselves.
all i can say is that at first i was expecting it to be kind of corny, like if you encounter an alien energy life form set your phaser to heat to destroy it or if you encounter a giant rock thing use cement to heal its wounds.
but it wasn't anything like that, it was good, very entertaining thoughts and ideas about the lessons learned from star trek and how they are related to the authors real life.

defiantly a must read for any star trek fan.

This is an almost completely self-regarding book. It has almost nothing to say about Star Trek, which is merely a vehicle for the discussion of the true subject, which is the author. It is also not very amusing or interesting, and is in fact pretty much a waste of time. I threw mine out with contempt; should have sent it back and at least got a partial refund.

                                  1 out of 5 stars A Horrendously Stupid Book.......2005-10-31

I love Star Trek, OK? This should have been a really great book, since there are so many important lessons in the series. But Marinaccio completely misses many important lessons, in my opinion, and gets several other lessons mixed up, and generally dilutes whatever lessons remain to the point of vapidity with his self-indulgence and self-absorption. Sorry, Dave, but not everything in Star Trek relates to some insignificant detail of your small little life in a Marketing company.

Not to mention that the book stops short. "I think there's a new series called DS9 or something, I'll have to keep an eye on that." Seriously, he says that. To me, watching the later series greatly expanded the "lessons that needed to be learned".

I threw this book away in disgust after reading it. Really. Lierally threw it in the trash. It was that bad, and I didn't want to be embarrassed by having it sit on the shelf as my complete DVD collections of all the Star Trek TV series.

Please do NOT buy this book. It's really HORRIBLY STUPID!

4 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom from TV? Amazing!.......2004-11-13

This is a fun little book chock full of wise sayings gleaned from episodes of the original Star Trek. The original was not a space opera, it was a futurized series of life's lessons, very carefully crafted. Each episode had a heavy-duty message embedded within--and not very hard to spot either. This book does not necessarily include these thematic messages, but it does excerpt a number of pithy, humorous quotes from the characters. It is highly reminiscent of a poster my dentist has in his office of Everything I Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. I expect there is also a book with that name, but I haven't read it. These words of wisdom also remind me of Dr. Akin's famous "Laws of Spacecraft Design" which you can access on the internet. With his permission, I used several in my book "The Knowledge Management and Information Technology Encyclopedia" (published by the Government and not for sale). My favorite submits from Marinaccio's delightful book are:

Gossip is often confused with conversation. In fact it often takes the place of conversation. Take gossip away from some folks and they would turn into mimes. p.61
