What's Up with the Binding.......2004-01-12

I love the collection of songs in this book and it is an improvement from Volume 2 since most songs in Volume 2 do not show the chords by name, whereas most songs in this volume do.

My biggest dislike of this collection is the book's binding. Unlike Volume 2 which has the kind of binding where the back folds out from the book so it lays flat on a piano's music holder, this book is so tightly bound that the only way I have found to keep it open is to use paper clips or clothes pins to keep the book from closing on it's own while playing. This makes turning pages very difficult.

If this book had been given the same binding as used on volume 2 I would have rated it top-notch, but because of the problems I have had with trying to keep the book open while playing I have to rate it a bad value for serious musicians.

Great accompaniment cds.......2007-01-09

I bought this so that I could perform even without a pianist. At the same time, I can be confident that when I do practice with a pianist, the accompaniment cds are following the same music as in the book. This is one great resource for any singer.

In his long awaited autobiography.Joe Franklin and his co author:Mr.R.J.Marx try to recall Joe's life story.From his humble beginnings in The Bronx,NYC during the hideious days of The Great Depression to his first encounter with a former star:George M.Cohan to his early job in radio as a record librian and research asistant first to Martin Block(for Mr.Block's "Make Believe Ballroom Time"Show)and later for Paul("Pop")Whiteman.Before Franklin finally got his own radio talk/music shows on stations like WJZ.To his earliest days on TV: First on WJZ/WABC TV Ch.7 in NYC with"Joe Franklin's Memory Lane!"to his later years on WOR TV/WWOR TV Ch.9 in NYC and in Seacaucus,NJ with"The Joe Franklin Show" &"When Movies Were Movies"and his most recent nostalgia talk/music program on WOR Radio.While the book tries to tell Franklin's life story.Most of the bio's facts are questionable.Since Joe does not go into alot of details about his career and his disrespect for NYC based kids tv hosts/performers is eveident.He gets the facts about the hosts/performers of WJZ/WABC TV Ch.7 NYC's"Time For Fun"/"The Johnny Jellybean Show"wrong.Since Joe Bova..never played:"Johnny Jellybean"on that show(The role was played first by Bill Britten and later by Keith Hefner).Mr.Bova did host:"Time For Fun!"but as "Uncle Joe".Franklin also gets the facts wrong about Claude Kirchner.Mr.Kirchner never played a clown on his WOR TV Ch.9 NYC based cartoon shows.He played a circus ringmaster.Who worked with a clown puppet"Clownie".But he never wore a clown suit and make up on his NYC based kids tv shows and Franklin also gets the facts wrong about who hosted:"The Tommy Seven Show".The host/performer..who played the sad faced tramp clown was not:Keith Hefner..but The Late Ed Bakey.Mr.Bakey passed away in May,1988 not Mr.Hefner.This book does little more have Mr.Franklin give the readers a random smapling of his life stories.With inaccuate facts and nasty lies about his colleages in NYC tv added to the manuscript for those lovers of gossip mongering.This is one memiors not worth having.Kevin S.Butler.

Great book about show business & New York.......2003-03-26

There are many interesting anecdotes about the greats and the near greats (whatever that is?) I think it means when they mention your name, they have to explain who you are. "Greats, near greats and ingrates" is a Damon Runyon line. Mr. Franklin is even somewhat kind and forgiving to the ingrates...As to what is Joe Franklin really like? There are plenty of stories about his youth, his rise in show business, his marriage and his son. If you like sexy tidbits about the stars and about Joe also, there are plenty. If you don"t like that stuff, or you think it's overdone, skip over it...The funniest pages in the book, at least to this reviewer, are about three "never-weres" who had a "fixation" on Joe Franklin. Busted out laughing reading that stuff. But some of the stories are very sad. This isn't all light reading. Some are mysterious (you wonder how that happened)...The book (copyrighted 1995) seems to celebrate the "retirement of Joe
Franklin." If that was true, he seems to be making a big comeback. He's as active as ever and has a great restaurant near Times Square, and it's a great New York book. It happened in New York.

Best book for newbie Oracle Apps DBA.......2006-12-01

I agree with the other reviewer that this is good solid introduction for an experienced Oracle DBA who is new to the Oracle 11i Apps side of database administration. I have the other 2 Oracle 11i DBA books and this one nicely covers how to perform the complex side of Oracle 11i Applications patching and working with the concurrent manager which are two of the most challenging aspects of working with Oracle 11i Apps as a new Apps DBA. I also like the coverage of Apache and JServ. However the main weakness is that it does not do that great a job of covering Workflow administration or other component administration of the Oracle 11i Apps/ebusiness suite either. For this you are stuck with Oracle documentation and Metalink. Still a worthy effort and valuable for the new Oracle 11i Apps DBA.

Badly organized not enough detail.......2005-08-07

I work as an Apps DBA. I happened to get a hold of this book and read thro' it to see if it contained anything useful. Its awful. Its badly organized.

There is no explanation on the architecture, no examples on how to use the adutilities and when to use them. Its very theoritical and not practial.

There is more emphasis on windows (I havent heard of many decent sized businesses running oracle applications on windows)

"Hands on" primer for newbie Oracle Apps DBAs.......2004-06-09

Assumed knowledge: Oracle database admininistration and/or knowledge of material covered in the OCP exams

Target audience: Ideal for new to intermediate Apps DBAs and/or non-Apps DBAs in the transition to becoming an Oracle Apps DBA.

Content: Current up to at least release 11.5.8; covers new 8i and 9i features; low to medium level detail on how-to; hands-on/by example approach

Platform and O/S coverage: Mainly UNIX (70%) with some Wintel (30%)

Unique to this book:
1. Rare, "under the hood" detail of 11i-specific 9iAS components: Apache and Jserv (Chapters 4 & 5). This 11i specific information doesn't appear in any other publication, Oracle or third party (that I know of). Chapters 4 and 5 could justify purchasing the entire book.
2. Very "hands on" or by example, low to medium level detail approach by the author: plenty of screen shots, actual commands, how-to examples. Ideal for the beginner and intermediate Apps DBA -- I wish I had this when I started out!
3. Chapter 10 on Patching provides the essential, need-to-know ADPATCH details for effective patching.

Shortcomings:
1. No technical architecture overview of Oracle 11i E-Business Suite.
2. Chapter 9 on Installation and Migration: Lacking depth of coverage of feasible 11i to 11i migration strategies. No mention of Releases such as 11.5.8 or 11.5.9, Consolidated Update Patch 1 or 2.
3. Chapter 11 on Cloning: Unfortunately, not very original as it adds no further information nor insight/value to the Metalink note on Rapid Cloning released by Oracle.

Overall verdict: Detailed and hands-on reference for the beginner-intermediate Oracle Apps DBA. Serves as a handy primer to "hit the ground running" with administering an 11i environment. Unfortunately, it falls short on detail re: upgrades, migrations and 11i cloning.

April Wells' effort complements, and provides more low to medium level of detail than two "must-have" books for Oracle Apps/11i DBA: Andy Tremayne's Oracle Applications Performance Tuning Handbook and Barbara Matthews'/Beacon Solutions' Installing, Upgrading & Maintaining Oracle Applications 11i.
