      Book Description

In the past two decades powerful economic, social, and fiscal forces have buffeted America's major cities. The urbanization of poverty, the shift in employment from manufacturing to services, middle-class flight to the suburbs and Sunbelt, the tax revolt, and cuts in federal aid have made it difficult for many cities to pay for such basic services as police and fire protection, sanitation, and roads.

In "America's Ailing Cities" Helen F. Ladd and John Yinger identify and measure the impact of these broad national trends. Drawing on data from 86 major cities, they offer a rigorous and innovative analysis of urban fiscal conditions. Specifically, they determine the impact of a wide range of factors that lie outside municipal control, including a city's basic economic structure and state-determined fiscal institutions, on a city's underlying fiscal health-- the difference between potential revenue and the expenditure needed to finance public services of acceptable quality. Concluding that the fiscal health of America's cities has worsened since 1972, the authors call for new state and federal urban policies that direct assistance to the neediest cities.

5 out of 5 stars Get ready to hurt your sides from laughing!.......2002-12-29

Although this book has been out awhile, I was just recently made aware of it through the author's newspaper columns. It is hysterically funny, I laughed so hard at points that I had to put the book down. The best thing is, he has a new one coming out soon. Prepare yourselves to read something from Georgia's next great humorist.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book! Laughed all the way through it both times........2001-06-04

I have read many Southern humorist books, and this one fits right in there with the best. These episodes of Ed Williams' life reminds me of the times I spend listening to guys and gals, young and old, telling their life experiences. If you enjoy sitting down after a great meal with friends, and reminiscing about the good-old-days, the funny-old-days, even if those good, funny old days were last week, then this book is for you. It is definitely a page turner.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointed in Columbus, GA.......2001-04-25

After having read the reviews and and tuning into GPR's interview with the author I couldn't wait to get my copy of "Sex, Dead Dogs, and Me". I even sent a gift copy to my son. Unfortunately, the book wasn't worth the wait. I waited patiently for the belly laughing humor I was sure this book contained and all I received for my patience was a few chuckles.

Not only was they hype much better than the book but I found the editing (if there was any) to be very poor. As a reader I find it very frustrating to try and guess which word the author intended to use in a given sentence. This book was worse than a small town weekly newspaper for errors. In addition, I found the author's over use of asides and paragraph numbering to be even more frustrating.

Mr. Williams shows potential as a southern humorist but this book obviously went to print way too soon. I wish I had saved my money.

5 out of 5 stars More Fun Than a Box of Chocolates.......2001-04-13

This is a wonderfully fun, heartwarming and irreverent look at life "down under." Don't miss it.

          1 out of 5 stars A True Storyteller.......2001-01-14

I detect vast experience in the fine art of story fabricating might be a talent the author uses freely. He wears it like a tight glove, as though he is one with the story. How far will this author go? That, my friends, is yet to be seen.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on an awful band.......2007-08-29

This is an interview style book with personal recollections on The Germs, in particular Darby Crash and the socal punk and cultural scene circa late 70's early 80's.

I found this to be a fun entertaining read. Much of this book is a great look into not just the socal punk scene during that time period but a glimpse into the overall weirdness that was southern California during those days. The experimental Scientology based school that Pat Smear and Darby Crash attended together where part of the curriculim was doing acid with the teachers that was fully funded and sanctioned by the local public school system is really far out and you almost have to believe that it was some sort of covert government mind control experiment/program going on at that place. When talking about it Pat Smear seems genuinly baffled that a school like this was even allowed to exist. There are a lot of other examples of what an off the wall place southern California was then in this book too. The world sure has changed. You also get a lot of dirt on other people and bands that came out of this scene. It would probably shock a lot of people that a girly pop band like the Go Go's came out of this insanity.

One last thing I would like to add. I consider many of the groups that came out of the socal punk/hardcore scene during the late 70's up until maybe the mid 80's to be the best music that can be labeled as punk that was ever made but The Germs are absolutely, positively, one of, if not the, worst completely unlistenable bands ever. They were an interesting story but I'm sorry they made horrible music.

          4 out of 5 stars Historical..........2005-11-26

I was expecting a little more scene-driven story, but this book focuses mainly on Darby's life, not just in his punk days. Overall, I give it 4 stars because you definitely feel like you get to know who Darby was and what he was about by the end of the book. Granted it's probably Mullen's version mostly, but it seemed pretty accurate based on the other reading I've done about Darby.

5 out of 5 stars Darby-The 'Glitter' influenced performance artist.......2004-12-05

I love The Germs. I love this era of punk rock. I love that Southern California had it's own punk rock cult leader . We went to the same high school! I like how this book portrayed Darby as kind of nerdy and idealistic. I appreciated that he was such an earnest fan of David Bowie, searching for hidden meanings in his lyrics on LSD. I was also fascinated by the strange relationship with his mother. I thought the book did an excellent job of humanizing an "icon". I could really see and feel him as a disturbed young man creating work that still has profound ripple effects.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent primer on Darby and the pre-hardcore LA punk scene.......2004-08-11

As this is a historical document, it surely contains incorrect and biased information.

It's also very interesting and informative, especially if you can trust your own B.S. detector instincts. It's a mixture of half Darby anecdotes and half LA punk underground retrospective.

If nothing else, this is an enlightening and depressing read. Throw MIA into the CD player and crack it open.

            Book Description

What does it mean to be young in a changing world? How are migration, settlement and new urban cultures shaping young lives? And in particular, are race, place and class still meaningful to contemporary youth cultures? This path-breaking book shows how young people are responding differently to recent social, economic and cultural transformations. From the spirit of white localism deployed by de-industrialized football supporters, to the hybrid multicultural exchanges displayed by urban youth, young people are finding new ways of wrestling with questions of race and ethnicity. Through globalization is whiteness now being displaced by black culture -- in fashion, music and slang -- and if so, what impact is this having on race politics? Moreover, what happens to those people and places that are left behind by changes in late modernity? By developing a unique brand of spatial cultural studies, this book explores complex formations of race and class as they arise in the subtle textures of whiteness, respectability and youth subjectivity. This is the first book to look specifically at young ethnicities through the prism of local-global change. Eloquently written, its riveting ethnographic case studies and insider accounts will ensure that this book becomes a benchmark publication for writing on race in years to come.

            ** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
As the hit television show Desperate Housewives continues to seduce viewers with its outrageous humor, absorbing mysteries, and deliciously naughty images of suburbia, this collection of essays examines the program's appeal and why it has struck a chord with modern women. Critics, including bestselling chick-lit authors Beth Kendrick, Julie Kenner, and Shanna Swendson, address key areas in essays such as "Why American Heroines are Best When They're Bad," "The Everywoman in an Apron," "Edie Brit as Queer Critique," and "The Rebirth of Irony." Not a typical fan guide, the essays deeply explore the show, answering the question on everyone's mind: Just what is it about this show that has America so enthralled?

            4 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Psychoanalysis.......2007-02-10

            ****
As a committed fan of Desperate Housewives, I enjoyed this collection of 17 fun essays probing various ideas, opinions, and critiques about DH. The topics were diverse and thought provoking. For example, one essay was entirely about DH homes, called "Oh Give Me a Home: Deconstructing the Houses of Desperate Housewives". Another essay was "Why I Hate Lynette and Why That Could Be a Compliment"; yet another was identifying with Lynette. It was indeed a type of psychoanalysis of the characters, the episodes, the themes, etc. But for a fan, this type of analysis is far from dull.

The writing style is interesting, often tongue-in-cheek, with about half of the writers having previously been attorneys, and the other half professional writers. I would call the writing style in between an academic tome and a fan book---for me a perfect, thought-provoking, intelligent adventure of a book.

            Recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Good ideas but needing more depth.......2006-09-03

I found this book online and I could not put it down! I am a geek for feminism and pop culture pieces so it made this a fun read before reading academic literature. Being really into gender studies I find the TV show desperate housewives addicting because there is a lot of fascinating depictions in the show about the lives of suburbian women.
The book is probably better with cultural criticism from a literary light. However I must admit that it would have been nice though to have some connections with Feminine Mystique or to be looking at more of the social science patterns that Desperate Houswives does or does not reflect. Some of the levels of thinking seemed more like essays from an introductary college class than some detailed cultural analysis. However it does give you a spring board for some of the many things that seemed wrapped up in the TV show desperate houswives and could use more depth and detail for making the cases about what is going on with it.
Also, in the end, I still love the show!!!! If you are a desperate housewives fan learning to think criticially about the show is not a bad idea because it helps us grapple with the question "why are we so engrossed by this show" from a critical light instead of just and adoring perspective on the brillinat show.

4 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Publication.......2006-06-23

If the intention of "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" was to capitalize on the (now waning) popularity of Desperate Housewives, they could have produced another fact book; full of pictures, biographies, timelines, and really nothing the average regularly-viewing fan didn't already know. How "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" differs from this kind of "quick buck" is that it is comprised of thoughtful essays that go beyond Bree is So Uptight! and GASP, Gabby's Sleeping With Her Gardener.

The writing techniques of the various contributors vary. Some (mostly near the beginning of the book) relate their own lives to that of the Desperate Houswife they feel most closely resembles them. While the first few essays are admittedly of the standard variety (Go Lynette, the only "real" housewife! and the like), drawing parallels between the lives of the housewives and the lives of the authors is a valid method of exploring and relating to the show. Part of Desperate Housewives appeal lies in the title: there are many housewives, and quite a few of them are desperate. Affairs with gardeners, vehicular homicide and suicides aside, the reason many viewers tune in to Desperate Housewives is to try and catch glimpses of their own lives in that of Susan, Bree, Lynette, and Gabrielle's experiences. An author exploring their own relation to the show is no more self-serving than any viewer who sits in front of their television screen and reacts approvingly or disapprovingly to the housewives' decisions.

In the middle of the book, the collection begins to pick up steam, with essays exploring sex in the suburban settings of classic television shows in relation to it's use in Desperate Houswives. Another delves into Edie Britt's role as the outsider perspective on Wisteria Lane that the show's narrative tropes and character-building revolves around. Yet another interprets the show as a morality play, with each character representing a traditional vice.

If a potential buyer is interested in another factbook on Desperate Housewives, or an expose on the backstage secrets of the show, or a simple recap of the plot to date, this is not the book for you. If the potential buyer is interested in a decent collection of scholarly essays exploring topics both directly and indirectly related to the show, "Welcome to Wisteria Lane" is worth the purchase.

            Book Description

This certification exam measures your ability to develop and implement middle-tier components, server components, and XML Web services by using Visual Studio .NET and the Microsoft .NET Framework. This exam counts as a core credit toward the new MCAD (Microsoft Certified Application Developer) certification as well as a core credit toward the new MCSD .NET track. This book is not intended to teach new material. Instead it assumes that you have a solid foundation of knowledge but can use a refresher on important concepts as well as a guide to exam topics and objectives. This book focuses exactly on what you need to pass the exam - it features test-taking strategies, time-saving study tips, and a special Cram Sheet that includes tips, acronyms, and memory joggers not available anywhere else. The series is supported online at several Web sites: examcram.com, informit.com, and cramsession.com.

The accompanying CD features PrepLogic™ Practice Tests, Preview Edition. This product includes one complete PrepLogic Practice Test with approximately the same number of questions found on the actual vendor exam. Each question contains full, detailed explanations of the correct and incorrect answers. The engine offers two study modes, Practice Test and Flash Review, full exam customization, and a detailed score report.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's the smartest and the fastest way to get certified !.......2004-09-02

I will suggest this book to everyone who want to pass and study for the exam quickly. I have been reading this book and I found that this book is really easy to read and has a good depth. It is a "to the points" type of book, and doesn't give me too much unnecessary information like normally other book does.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the price regardless..........2004-06-17

I used this book and Gunderloy's 70-310 book. This book alone will not help you pass the test, but it is worth the price for 2 whole practice tests and over a 100 chapter-end questions.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Foundation, Needed More.......2004-04-15

I passed 70-310 by using this book and the Transcender practice tests. For me, the Transcender tests filled in some gaps in the material that this book didn't touch on or didn't touch on in great detail.

I like the Exam Cram series because I find them easy to read. Most of the chapters are short (10 - 20 pages), easily digestible pieces, which I prefer. I also appreciated the programming examples in this book, since they allowed me to get some practice creating projects and writing code. I could use the Visual Studio .NET help system to look at the class members and answer any curious-type questions I had. If you learn better by working on hand-on examples, you'll appreciate them too.

If you are new to Visual Basic and object oriented programming, do not buy this one right away. Learn more about VB.NET first and then buy this book to pass the test. If you are a seasoned programmer with VB experience, get it along with practice tests. I can recommend Transcender, but then again, those are the only kind I have used.

            Good luck on the exam!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Hand On Experience for VB.NET (STEP-BY-STEP)........2003-10-16

This book is a good learning practice to vb.net/.NET. I have read other book, but too much introduction.

I follow through all the example in this book and type it up myself.

I really recommended this book to user with experience in programming and want to go straight into coding.

            Author Well Done.!

I'm currently studying for 70-310 exam and will comments on it when I have finish the exam.
