American Jewish humor began with the early colonial settlers, the Jews, who first arrived in New Amsterdam (now New York) from Brazil in 1654 aboard the St. Charles, otherwise known as the Jewish Mayflower. Their descendants constituted a majority of the Jewish citizenry in North America for more than 200 years.

The scene began to change when, in 1848, the Jews of Germany were oppressed to the point where tens of thousands were forced to flee their homeland, most of them coming to America--the New World--the world of great promise.

Too Jewish....Just kidding!.......2000-05-11

Experience humor in real 'Yiddishe Heim' fashion in 'Classic Jewish Humor in America' by Henry Spalding. He does a phenomenal job taking the reader into the "American Shtetl", with wonderful bursts of yiddish(Jewish) thrown in, in just the right places.

Yet, in a way, I feel that he takes his statement "Humor is no laughing matter!" a bit too seriously....

Although, I must say that speech/lecture material is in abundance, and in his introduction to every chapter/subject you can glean a real understanding of the American Jewish Mind.

The layout is good; the reading easy and enjoyable, although it lacks an index which is a minus.

I would suggest this book to anyone looking for authentic Jewish jokes and funny facts to spice up a lecture or entertain an audience. However, I would not suggest it to someone who is purely after humor and not at all interested in extra facts and historical tidbits.

One last credit to the book, as he admits in his introduction, is that he is not even attempting to write objectively for "I have a love affair with my people," and that is where the special flavor is added which makes this book unique, and makes it that much better than his other ethnic humor books.

This would make a great gift for your rabbi! Just be careful not to imply that his speeches are dull!

I bought this because I'm starting to learn to play an acoustic guitar. This music is written for organs, pianos and electric keyboards but it's so easy to read, I can use the same notes. It has all the lyrics of the songs too. This song book would be great for people who have a hard time seeing notes.... these are nice and big. I love Johnny Cash and June Carter's music and to be about to start with something so simple like this, is great.

This item's description is ambiguous, so I want to point to people that it is NOT a book-length analysis or appreciation of Cash's songs, it is merely a COLLECTION OF HIS LYRICS, categorised by the editor. A comprehensive look at the musical career of Johnny Cash........1999-02-14

This book, available May-June 1999, includes more than 2,600 song title entries and numbers some 1,005 pages in length. Each entry includes: composer, recording location, producer, session personnel, and the format (single, ep, lp, CD) of release. Most entries carry detailed annotations. Included in the book is a Foreword by Marty Stuart and a complete listing of liner notes, with contents, written by Cash for his CBS albums from 1958-1986. Cash kindly allowed their replication for this project. An index of some 70 pages details the contents of the song entries. This publication is meant to be an encyclopedia, of sorts, of the recorded works of a country legend.

The excessive worship of adolescence and its social empowerment by adult institutions is the deeply rooted cause of a serious cultural malaise. So argues semiotician Marcel Danesi in Forever Young, an unforgiving and controversial look at modern culture's incessant drive to create a 'teen-aging' of adult life.

Written for the general reader and based on five year's worth of interviews with over 200 adolescents and their parents, Danesi begins by asserting that one of the early causes of this crystallization of adolescence as an age category can be traced back to theories of psychology at the turn of the twentieth century. Since then, the psychological view of adolescence as a stressful period of adjustment has become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you are learning CMM, this book will not help you........2003-06-24

The book spends an overwhelming portion of its content focusing on a ballet and how it relates to CMM. As an author, I got the impression she was using this as a technique to meet her page quota. The author overuses glittering generalizations about how to manage people and an organization. In that sense, this book is a rehash of useless management fluff from the 80s. This book contains about 15-20 pages worth of useful information and should cost $10. I will never buy a book published by UNISYS again.

Rather disappointing.......2003-02-13

I was very disappointed in this book. I found it to be too much touchy feely and fluffy, and too little substance. Other than trying to compare setting up a CMM program to choreographing a ballet (which didn't do it for me), I found nothing insightful about this book. I have a large CMM library that I frequently reference, but this is one book definitely collecting dust. I would recommend not wasting your money as there are far better books on the market that address the subject in far greater depth and breadth.

After 20 years of experience in software development, QA, testing, and project management, I have not found a better book on implementing SEI's CMM than Kim Caputo's book: "CMM Implementation Guide: Choreographing Software Process Improvement". In my opinion, "CMM Implementation Guide: Choreographing Software Process Improvement" is well-written, easy to read, insightful, in-depth, and provides you with the basic knowledge and tools that will increase your chance for a successful implementation of CMM. If you want to improve your software development processes, reduce cost, deliver on-time, increase overall software quality, and increase customer satisfaction, then Kim Caputo's book, "CMM Implementation Guide: Choreographing Software Process Improvement," is a must read for you and your team.

This book provides a step-by-step guide on how to go from CMM level 1 to 5 in eight chapters with some diligence, hard work, and practice. The book also contains 15 appendices that provide more in-depth detail on the specific processes, documentation, and techniques, which I found very helpful and will be utilizing in the near future. I enjoyed Kim Caputo's ability to make the seemingly complicated task of implementing CMM more simplified with her "ready, aim, fire" approach that will ensure a successful CMM implementation. Kim Caputo brings her experience as a dancer and a software professional together to describe the CMM implementation approach, which makes for more interesting reading. She provides a realistic view and approach to implementing CMM and deals with some of the key issues that will keep you from being successful such as management's view of the value of CMM, the culture of the organization, and the basic human resistance to change. You can tell that Kim has "been there, done that" and has gone through the tedious process of and the lessons learned from implementing the CMM. The experiences that Kim describes matched many of my past experiences when trying to make process improvements. The book provides and describes the tools and techniques that were developed at the Unisys Corporation to help ensure success in implementing the CMM process.

I really appreciate how Kim Caputo reinforces that there are no silver bullets or special pills that can make a CMM implementation easier. Kim reminds us that a CMM implementation is a constant, on-going process of improvement that requires choreographed teamwork and practice. The book comes with a CD-ROM that contains all of the basic documentation and forms needed to successfully implement CMM, as discussed in her book. The material on the CD-ROM is worth more than the price of the book.

A brilliant view of the CMM.......2002-02-26

I have worked in the area of software process improvement for many years, and I have literally dozens of books on the subject. Some I've read once, most I've read two or three times... and then there are a very small group of books that are falling apart, held together by all the "sticky notes" and hilighting and paper clip bookmarks -- these three or four books are never found on the bookshelf, because they are always in use. And of those select books, only one was NOT written by Watts Humphrey; it is this book by Kim Caputo.

Her use of the analogy of dance, from her own personal background, gives a refreshing and *different* perspective to a highly technical subject.

After reading Watts Humphrey's books, *I* understand the CMM and SPI... after reading Kim Caputo's book, I can make *others* understand. And that, to me, has made this book worth its weight in gold.

This was the first book to address CMM. Unfortunately it is dated. The cd-rom contains a little useful material -- if you don't have anything, but is insufficient to do CMM.

There are commercially available prewritten processes but they may be difficult to adapt to your organisation. Caputo won't help there either.

If you get Paulk and Dymond you don't need this book. You cannot do CMM without Paulk (or TR24 and TR25 which Paulk is mostly a rehash of). Hence you don't need Caputo too.

You will need the Framework by Olson (download from SEI) to supplement Paulk. Dymond is a useful pictorial overview.

This book has been OBE due to time and has been overcome by better tools. You do not need this one. Get Paulk and Dymond instead.
