Good giggles for cheap.......2005-06-06
Born and raist in rural Georgia, I gots a hardy prishation for nermal talk - that is, speech what ain't been hardened by yankee winters and lack'uh manners. So I gets a chuckel er two outta much uh this here collection of Mistuh Nicholson's dry wits. Most folks aint gonna wanna pay full fair, on accounta the joke kinda tires after three er five pages. But if ya kin find yer a copy on the cheap, itta prolly make good bathroom readin. That's were I's keepin mine.
The mind of a 12 year old........2002-04-10
That kid from Australia must be living WAY out in the outback. You would think that by the age of 12, he would have learned that hamburgers and fried chicken come from living animals. He would really be shocked to see how ducks are killed at the slaughter house. I doubt, though, that it was really written by a 12 year old, but by an adult trying to make a political statement. Nevertheless, I'll bet he eats meat without a second thought as to how the animal was killed. But, that's how liberals are.

Ducky little book.......2000-10-10
This book start good, dwindled a little in the middle but ended with a bang. it provided very good information about many Southern american topics. The most injoyable of these by far being the duck shooting. There is nothing more satifying than killing small harmless little creatures. The fact they are fluffy is an added bonus. This leads to wonder why our society so heavly rewards violence and death. This shows how sick, sad our society is.

Music as Thought: Listening to the Symphony in the Age of Beethoven
ASIN: 0520243013 |
Book Description
In this pioneering, erudite study of a pivotal era in the arts, Walter Frisch examines music and its relationship to early modernism in the Austro-German sphere. Seeking to explore the period on its own terms, Frisch questions the common assumption that works created from the later 1870s through World War I were transitional between late romanticism and high modernism. Drawing on a wide range of examples across different media, he establishes a cultural and intellectual context for late Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, Gustav Mahler, and Arnold Schoenberg, as well as their less familiar contemporaries Eugen d'Albert, Hans Pfitzner, Max Reger, Max von Schillings, and Franz Schreker.
Frisch explores "ambivalent" modernism in the last quarter of the nineteenth century as reflected in the attitudes of, and relationship between, Nietzsche and Wagner. He goes on to examine how naturalism, the first self-conscious movement of German modernism, intersected with musical values and practices of the day. He proposes convergences between music and the visual arts in the works of Brahms, Max Klinger, Schoenberg, and Kandinsky. Frisch also explains how, near the turn of the century, composers drew inspiration and techniques from music of the past--the Renaissance, Bach, Mozart, and Wagner. Finally, he demonstrates how irony became a key strategy in the novels and novellas of Thomas Mann, the symphonies of Mahler, and the operas of Strauss and Hofmannsthal.

Customer Reviews:
Great first hand account of the initial production of Star Trek........2007-05-22
I felt this book presented a raw Behind the Scenes look at Star Trek the initial series. This book was written after Gene Roddenberry's death so there is a feeling that things that were neatly hidden away have become reported. One thing the book points out is that Gene was by no means the creative genius of Star Trek. The series was the result of many creative people. It was also interesting to note the extent for which Roddenberry would go for royalties, even securing 1/2 of the royalties of the original Star Trek Theme by writing this obscure lyric that would never be performed, nor known about from the original composer. Good stories about Shatner's hairpiece and Roddenberry's falling out with Nimoy. All good reading.
One of My Favorite Things.......2006-02-14
I assume that if you're reading this review, we share in common the belief that Star Trek The Original Series (TOS) was great. Perhaps you bought the complete set of DVD's, like I did. The DVD's are worth it; I consider them one of my most treasured collections. I watch the episodes with my kids, and they love it. TOS is great television, with great writing asking intriguing questions about man's existence. Television writing has devolved since that time.
I've read both "Inside Star Trek" and Yvonne Fern's "Gene Roddenberry, The Last Conversation". Both books look at different angles of Star Trek. Fern's book deals with the philosophical side of Gene Roddenberry, and how he perceived himself. "Inside Star Trek" deals with the business end of the show and all the difficulties encountered in producing it. It's an impressive story, and it's amazing that it ever got produced. Herb Solow and Robert Justman did a fantastic job producing the series.
It's been about 33 years since I was in college. After dinner in the cafeteria, a group of us would congregate to watch Star Trek reruns on the local UHF station. That was a crucial time in the success of Star Trek, when the UHF stations picked it up, because it was otherwise a ratings failure on the networks. If it wasn't for the phenomenal success of Star Trek appearing in reruns on UHF, Star Trek would have been just a vague memory.
I would not recommend this book to new viewers of Star Trek, until they have seen the shows, because the book tends to reveal the magic. Roddenberry is a god to some, but he had "feet of clay". Also, reading about the actors tends to diminish the herioc stature of the characters they protrayed. "Inside Star Trek" shows you all the nuts and bolts of how the thing was put together, and how it fell apart.
Looking back, Star Trek was an incredible achievement.
This is the best non fiction book I have ever read........2004-09-11
This book is a masterpiece of non fiction documentary reporting. It explains what really happned way back when far more clearly and deeply then anything I have ever read, period! We need books like these on almost every subject. This book dispells so many myths its mind boggeling. I encourage everyone to read this book even if they hate star trek, just for an example of good writing.
Priceless for every TOS fan and trekkie.......2004-04-01
I could never have dreamed of the value of this book - I bought it and was amazed! This book is a must-have for every fan of the original series and real trekkie!
The complete background of the beginning of the series, the problems, the costs and the riscs to make the series - all covered within this essential book. It was great fun to read and
extremely interesting. Believe it or not, I had some good laughs too!
Hard to realize how some things have been done and worked out. The real point in trying to catch a copy of it is that the writers were really there at this time! They perfectly know what they are talking about.
Try to get a copy of that book as fast as possible. Out of print for some time now it is very hard to find and I'm afraid I won't sell mine... *g*
VERY IN DEPTH LISTENING!.......2002-11-24
This set of two tapes sete the record straight on alot of myths about Star Trek: TOS. Herb Solow and Robert Justman do a real good job in telling their version of the story. The story of a man, myth, his dream, the team that put the series togther, and of Desilu Studios, and NBC who took a gamble to help fufill the impossible dream. STAR TREK! Kudos to Herb and Robert or RJ for giving an unbaised version of the genesis of a television legend!

Book Description
This book covers what an administrator needs to plan out and integrate a DMZ into a network for small, medium and Enterprise networks. In most enterprises the perception is that a firewall provides a hardened perimeter. However, the security of internal networks and hosts is usually very soft. In such an environment, a non-DMZ system that is offering services to the Internet creates the opportunity to leapfrog to other hosts in the soft interior of your network. In this scenario your internal network is fair game for any attacker who manages to penetrate your so-called hard perimeter.
- There are currently no books written specifically on DMZs
- This book will be unique in that it will be the only book that teaches readers how to build a DMZ using all of these products: ISA Server, Check Point NG, Cisco Routers, Sun Servers, and Nokia Security Appliances.
- Dr. Thomas W. Shinder is the author of the best-selling book on Microsoft's ISA, Configuring ISA Server 2000. Customers of the first book will certainly buy this book.
Download Description
Building REALLY BIG DMZs for Enterprise Networks covers a sorely needed area in critical business infrastructure
the Demilitarized Zone. DMZs play a crucial role in any network consisting of a Hosted Internet Web Server, internal servers which need to be segregated, External to Internal DNS Server, and an E-mail SMTP Relay Agent. The primary role of a DMZ is to mitigate risks associated with offering services to untrusted clients. A DMZ accomplishes this by providing network-level protection for a hosting environment, as well as segregating public hosting facilities from the private network infrastructure. This small but very important segment of the network is the section exposed to the public Internet and is the most difficult area on the network to create, and maintain both from an Engineering standpoint and a security standpoint. In this book (the only one of its kind) readers will learn how to make DMZ's utilizing the IT world's best of breed software and hardware products from Microsoft, Sun, Cisco, Nokia, and Check Point. DMZs are comprised of the following best of breed security products: Routers: 95% Cisco 5% Other Firewalls: 55% Check Point - 40% Cisco PIX - 5% Other Proxy Servers: 90% MS (Proxy/ISA) - 10% Other Web/FTP Servers: 65% SUN - 25% MS (IIS), 10% other (Linux) DNS Servers: 85% SUN - 5% MS - 10% other (Linux) Mail Relays: 40% MS, 25% Novell, 30% Unix, 5% Other VPNS: 60% Nortel Contivity, 25% Cisco Altiga, 15% MS VPN's This book covers what an administrator needs to plan out and integrate a DMZ into a network for small, medium and Enterprise networks. In most enterprises the perception is that a firewall provides a hardened perimeter. However, the security of internal networks and hosts is usually very soft. In such an environment, a non-DMZ system that is offering services to the Internet creates the opportunity to leapfrog to other hosts in the soft interior of your network. loaded w/ good info!.......2004-12-07
Building DMZ's is loaded w/ a lot of good info.
You can really create a great hardened network with the data in the book.
A book on DMZs - it's about time!!.......2004-10-29
I couldn't believe someone had finally taken the time to write about something so crucial in many networks today. With the advent of the dot-com bubble in the mid-90's, networks of various flavors sprung like weed all over the world; many of these were designed with the utmost intent for efficiency and security, unseen previously in many corporate enterprise networks. Taking from those years of innovation, this book details perimeter designs and implementations like I've never seen before! Bastion hosts and wireless DMZs even - a must have reference for the seasoned network administrator/architect!
Lots of useful information, but poorly edited........2004-06-26
The author writes on the level of a 6th grader. Here's an example sentance, "Although Windows 2000 is a secure OS, it is only as secure as you can make it". Which literally means "It is already as secure as you can make it". Anyhow, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. But almost every paragraph has a mistake like this in it. Sometimes it's anoying, and sometimes its confusing. There's pretty good info in this book, I just wish it was layed out more logically. Just like with the grammar, the author seems to skip around a lot and doesn't clarify things enough. I think there's a lot of good information, and I've learned alot, but it could be much much better.
Hella Awesome.......2003-10-24
This book is great. I have been looking for a book like this for so long. Hasnt anyone figured out that there is a need for this!!! All I can say is thank you to the authors (CCIE's, Industry professionals, etc) for doing this book. Step by step and my PIX had a DMZ. My boss flipped. Get this - look great, nuff said.
Never Before Seen.......2003-07-11
Wow. This is all I can say from reading this book. I cant beleive the level of information in this book. As a Network Analyst, I found that this book clearly, painlessly and in a very detailed manner helped me deploy a DMZ on my network. Athough my network is not that huge, this book really helped. This is a great book that made me look good at work when I deployed a PIX with IIS and had to secure it on a DMZ. This book goes WAY deep into VLANs, BGP, Check Point, Windows 2000, Unix, and the list goes on. This book even has two chapters on setting up WLAN DMZs which I never even heard of. Wow.

Book Description
This is the only book available on building network DMZs, which are the cornerstone of any good enterprise security configuration. It covers market-leading products from Microsoft, Cisco, and Check Point.
One of the most complicated areas of network technology is designing, planning, implementing, and constantly maintaining a demilitarized zone (DMZ) segment. This book is divided into four logical parts. First the reader will learn the concepts and major design principles of all DMZs. Next the reader will learn how to configure the actual hardware that makes up DMZs for both newly constructed and existing networks. Next, the reader will learn how to securely populate the DMZs with systems and services. The last part of the book deals with troubleshooting, maintaining, testing, and implementing security on the DMZ.
· The only book published on Network DMZs on the components of securing enterprise networks
· This is the only book available on building network DMZs, which are the cornerstone of any good enterprise security configuration. It covers market-leading products from Microsoft, Cisco, and Check Point
· Provides detailed examples for building Enterprise DMZs from the ground up and retro-fitting existing infrastructures
Customer Reviews:
large, but not well executed.......2006-11-01
i used to install firewalls as a consultant, and i spent a lot of time looking at varius configurations. in the intervening years, i've had the chance to keep current and examine a number of firewall devices for new features, configurations, and also look at some of the changes new technologies (ie WiFi) have brought. all in all, i think i was was pretty well prepared to look at "Designing and Building Enterprise Dmzs" from the angle of someone who's a moderate level firewall user.
i think it's fair to say that i'm disappointed in this new volume from Syngress, for numerous reasons. but before i get to the nits and complaints, i'll start with what i did like.
the book is large, nearly 700 pages of text covering a number of major commercial firewall products, such as checkpoint, nokia, microsoft, cisco, juniper netscreen, and sun. i like th fact that the authors were ambitious (more on that later), you do wind up with a lot of information in a single volume. if you've read firewalls books before, like the canon from oreilly, then you know a lot about firewalls, but you've probably understood that things are changing. new technologies require new solutions, and new offerings have hit the market. firewalls are now more abundant, more feature filled, and this book does a good job of tackling these products with, often, a good attempt at key coverage.
what i also like about this book is that it's not only about technologies, it's about management and about network layouts. this book doesn't pretend that there's one network, but instead shows how various approaches for various needs can be applied. the authors try to show you how each product's features can support those requirements, and what technologies can be used to guard access or secure hosts in a DMZ. this isn't just a book about firewalls and products.
ok, on to the complaints. you know a book is bad when you spot errors such as a bad CIDR specification for RFC 1918 address space (table 1.4), lots of port lists, and a brief primer on "servers" an services buried deep in a chapter on security cisco routers (chapter 11, page 540). i suspect the last point is due to the numerous authors in the book and a failure to find a cohesive structure, but that's a major failing of the book. it doesn't find a consistent voice and doesn't provide consistent coverage of the topics.
some chapters spend more time reviewing marketing materials for products (ie the chapter on juniper netscreen devices, chapter 9) than on getting down to a real feature comparison. this is a real failure of this book. the authors have a chance to cover all major commercial firewalls out there in a clear and unified way, taking an approach that can unify solutions across all, and haven't done so. you wind up with inconsistent coverage and have difficulty in finding the same information in any of the chapters. it's very tough to have multiple authors writing a book, but the editors should have budgeted time to provide a cohesive voice or enforced coverage standards. the reader would have benefitted dramatically for that.
as is often the case with syngress books, the screenshots are too often poorly done. again, this seems to be a function of the chapter and, i'm presuming, the author (based on their stated strengths in the intro to the book). the chapters using web-based and UNIX tools are often filled with poor quality, full screen screenshots that are illegible due to the scaling. the chapters on windows-based tools often have only a small window as a screenshot, enabling better legibility. care needs to be taken for these sorts of things.
the quality of the writing is ok, but it could be better overall. again, a function of the authors, i think, and not a strong editing job. often the writing is not very clear or well organized, and overall the book suffers for it. there's some good info in here, but it's buried under unclear and poorly organized text.
you should look over this book carefully if you're thinking about buying it. this will probably target people in large, heterogeneous environments or people studying for exams. i doubt someone will have all of these technologies in their production environment. however, if you want to see a lot of different firewalls compared, this is worth looking at, but be cautious about buying it.
