Book Description
Ethnic diversity has become a crucial component of the cultural capital of post-industrial cities. More and more travellers, leisure seekers and others in cosmopolitan cities indulge in ethno-cultural events and festivals and gravitate to the centers of immigrant ethnic commerce. In so doing, these events, festivals and centers enhance the livability, fuel the job machine and foster the branding of these cities.
Tourism, Ethnicity and the City entails an exploration of manifestations of cultural diversity by immigrant ethnic groups in cosmopolitan cities, and deals with the question of how these cultural manifestations are transformed into a vehicle for socio-economic development to the advantage of both immigrants and the city at large. The primary focus of this book is the role of immigrant entrepreneurs and workers in the emerging ethnic tourist industry as well as their interaction with public, private and civil society actors in this sector. As the opportunities of the immigrant tourist industry are contingent on national and local circumstances, the chapters cover different cities in different countries.
The book is situated at the crossroads of two fields of research, namely ethnic entrepreneurship and urban tourism. By addressing this problem from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, the book aims at a much more thorough understanding of the structural dynamics of commercial manifestations of cultural diversity by immigrants, as well as their impact on immigrants' connection to the knowledge economy and urban socio-economic development in general.

Book Description
The huge foreign debt of developing countries has become a mechanism of domination and means of recolonization that prevents any meaningful and sustainable human development. The policies pursued by the indebted countries' governments have usually been decided by their creditors rather than by the authorities of the countries concerned. As for the initiative to lighten the debt burden, launched with much fanfare by the G7, the IMF and the World Bank under pressure from the largest ever petition in human history, it has made clear its limits. In 50 questions and answers, this book explains in a simple but precise manner how and why the debt impasse has been arrived at. Illustrated with figures, maps and tables, it details the roles of the various actors involved, the mesh in which indebted countries are caught, and the various alternatives to future indebtedness.

Flawed account of the need to cancel odious debts.......2004-11-19
Millet is the General Secretary of CADTM France (Comité pour l'Annulation de la Dette du Tiers Monde). Toussaint is the President of CADTM and a member of the International Council of the World Social Forum.
Their book examines the origins of the developing countries' debts, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank's debt management, the efforts to reduce the debts and most important, the moral, political, economic and legal case for cancelling the debts.
As Fidel Castro observed in 2000, "The debt has already been amply repaid, given the terms under which it was contracted, the arbitrary and vertiginous growth of interest rates on the dollar during the preceding decade and the fall in prices of the basic products which are the fundamental source of revenue for countries still needing to develop. The debt has become a self-perpetuating vicious circle where new debts are taken out to pay off the interest on standing ones."
The authors quote the Russian legal theorist Alexander Nahum Sack who wrote, "If a despotic power contracts a debt, not according to the needs and interests of the State, but to fortify the despotic regime, to put down the population which would combat it, this debt is odious for the population of the entire State. This debt is not binding for the nation, it is the debt of a regime, the personal debt of the power which contracted it. Consequently, it falls when that power falls."
So in 1776, the new revolutionary state of the USA repudiated all the debts due to bankers in London. Similarly, in 1917 the Bolshevik government repudiated the Tsar's debts to British and French banks.
The authors cite a Touareg proverb, "What you do for the others without the others, is against the others." This hits the capitalist globalisers, and also the anarchists whose federal networks of committee and forums mirror their false internationalism.
The workers in the countries of Asia, Africa and Latin America do not need international committees or social forums to tell them what to do. They will decide when how they cancel their rulers' debts.

Book Description
This unique book examines some of the most burning issues on the economic agenda today. Bringing together some of the foremost authorities in their fields, this volume challenges the existing mechanisms for the governance of the world economy.
The chapters in this book consider the current approaches of the World Bank and IMF, and offer alternative proposals for the effective participation of developing countries in these institutions. In doing so, the volume ranges from discussions on reforming the IMF and its conditionality, the operations of financial markets, debt workouts and restructuring, management of capital flows, debt sustainability and crisis prevention, to Millennium Development Goals and the global partnership development.
This volume is a compelling reminder of the long road to be travelled before the governance of the world economy becomes truly responsive to the aspirations and needs of the developing world.

Book Description
For dozens of developing countries, the financial upheavals of the 1980s have set back economic development by a decade or more. Poverty in those countries have intensified as they struggle under the burden of an enormous external debt. In 1988, more than six years after the onset of the crisis, almost all the debtor countries were still unable to borrow in the international capital markets on normal terms. Moreover, the world financial system has been disrupted by the prospect of widespread defaults on those debts. Because of the urgency of the present crisis, and because similar crises have recurred intermittently for at least 175 years, it is important to understand the fundamental features of the international macroeconomy and global financial markets that have contributed to this repeated instability.
Developing Country Debt and the World Economy contains nontechnical versions of papers prepared under the auspices of the project on developing country debt, sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research. The project focuses on the middle-income developing countries, particularly those in Latin America and East Asia, although many lessons of the study should apply as well to other, poorer debtor countries. The contributors analyze the crisis from two perspectives, that of the international financial system as a whole and that of individual debtor countries.
Studies of eight countries—Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, the Philippines, South Korea, and Turkey—explore the question of why some countries succumbed to serious financial crises while other did not. Each study was prepared by a team of two authors—a U.S.-based research and an economist from the country under study. An additional eight papers approach the problem of developing country debt from a global or "systemic" perspective. The topics they cover include the history of international sovereign lending and previous debt crises, the political factors that contribute to poor economic policies in many debtor nations, the role of commercial banks and the International Monetary Fund during the current crisis, the links between debt in developing countries and economic policies in the industrialized nations, and possible new approaches to the global management of the crisis.

Book Description
Many assume incorrectly that confrontations between baseball's players and management began in the 1960s when the Major League Baseball Players Association started showing signs of becoming a union to be reckoned with. (The tensions of the 1960s prompted the owners to form the Player Relations Committee to deal with them and in February 1968, the two groups negotiated the games first Basic Agreement.) The struggles between players and management to gain the upper hand did not, however, start there-the two groups have had numerous clashes since baseball began (as well as since the 1968 agreement). There have been various periods of conflict and peace throughout the century and before. This work traces the history of the relationship between players and management from baseball's early years to the new challenges and developing tensions that led to spring training lockouts instigated by the owners and to player strikes in 1972, 1981, 1985, and 1994. An important agreement in 1996 brought labor peace once again. The future of player-management relations is also covered.

Wierd, Unexpected, and Old Bowling Stories.......2003-05-08
Copyright 1994, 94 pages. Cross "Ripley's Believe Or Not..." with a trip to the National Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum and you get this book. Lightly illustrated by Paul Coker. This book is the same size as "101 Uses For A Dead Cat", 5.5 inches tall and 8.25 inches long. Like Ripley's, some stories are gems but many are not. Most stories are several paragraphs long. Chapter 1 tales include hitting the 7-10 pins only on the 1st ball (1945); and 7,8,9,10 (1972) and 1,2,5,9 only on the 1st ball (1960). Other highlights are; don't slam your ball on the sidewalk because it can bounce back up and hit you in the chin,(1962) and if your principal reads the newspaper, you shouldn't win $1000 bowling a 300 during morning school hours (1993). The best story is "Mr. 900" which gives some detail to Glen Allison's July 1, 1982, 3 game 900 series which I knew little about apart from the fact he did it. I didn't know that when Pete Weber 1991 crystal trophy crashed to the floor, it was supposed to be glued to the wooden base which Pete still had in his hand. Bowling Hustlers, (M/F); doctored balls, (several soaker ball stories); and doctored lanes are covered. Near 300 games are covered. On your last ball, knocking down 9 pins and the top half of the 10th pin does not get you an ABC sanctioned 300 game, (1905). If you find Brunswick's (1915) missing Mineralite ball No. 391914, you've probably hit the jackpot...

Singer's Italian.......2003-11-16
Colorni's book has stood the test of time. But it's complexity is indeed more suitable for aspiring classical singers rather than amateur singers. Colorni approaches everything in much detail, which is both good and not so good! The information is there for the taking but the format is somewhat intimidating. Although the Italian language seems to be one of the easiest for singers to pronounce, it is full of exceptions at every turn. Whether there is a better way around this subject remains to be found. In the meantime. Colorni's book is the one to choose for detailed information on this subject.
Eileen Davis, Author of Sing French
It is way, way over my head.......2001-05-19
I did not expect the book to be so detailed and comprehensive. It would perhaps be useful for a professional opera singer, but for a fellow such as myself who takes a private singing lesson once a week and does all his exercises and songs in Italian, this book is simply too much. I wouldn't know where to begin with this book. It has entire chapters on topics that I would be satisfied to have a two paragraph explanation of. In order for it to be useful to me, it would have to be re-organized so that the important points stand out and can be read whilst skipping over the lesser points. In this day and age, a book with such ambitious pretensions as this should really include a CD that has examples of males and females actually pronouncing operatic Italian.

Book Description
In 1884 American physicians discovered the anesthetic value of cocaine, and over the next three decades this substance derived from the coca plant became so popular that it became, ironically, a public health problem. Demand exceeded supply; abuse proliferated. The black market produced a legendary underground of "cocaine fiends." As attempts at regulation failed, Congress in 1914 banned cocaine outright, and America launched its longstanding war against now-illegal drugs.
Challenging "traditional thinking about both the 'rise' and 'fall' of drug problems" (which makes legal prohibition the pivotal point in the story), Spillane examines phenomena that have eluded earlier students of drug history. He explores the role of American business in fostering consumer interest in cocaine during the years when no law proscribed its use, the ways in which authorities and social agents tried nonetheless to establish informal controls on the substance, and the mixed results they achieved.
In asking how this pain-allaying drug became recognizably dangerous, how reformers tried to ameliorate its social effects, and how an underground of cocaine abusers developed even before regulation of the drug industry as a whole, Spillane discovers contingency, complication, and mixed motives. Arguing that the underground drug culture had origins other than in federal prohibition can tell us as we face questions about drug policy today.

This is easy to use. Has a great chapter on how to start a radio station by using Shoutcast. It once was a great book, but now it is aging. Use your search first before buying this book. The Net is free and current. If then you are still in need of more info, buy this book. Not every thing is out of date. It is a novice friendly book. Wyatt Kaldenberg

thorough, helpful, comprehensive, a bit dated.......2004-01-11
I was studying about webcast and I picked up this book (hard copy) because I thought anything that applied to audio could apply to video. Not only did I find a perfect picture of technology at the height of dot-com and audio, I found a few things even *I* hadn't heard of at the time, and I thought I'd heard of everything.
Unacceptable amount of information provided........2002-12-11
I am amazed that the authors of this "publication?" expect anyone to purchase their product on the amount of skimpy information they provide about content. Where are the sample pages? Their editorial review is totally inadequate.
These authors are saving a significant amount by using the PDF/download approach to marketing. Too bad they didn't decide to pass their savings on to the consumer!

Customer Reviews:
This is NOT the MX 'bible'.......2005-01-22
I don't understand why this book has so many positive reviews. I have been a full-time coldfusion developer for 6 years. Our team of 4 coldfusion developers have the Ben Forta for CF 4.5 and this book.
We find this book fairly useless as a coldfusion reference. Sure it covers the procedures of web development in coldfusion, SQL, and related technologies, but you can't rely on it as a coldfusion reference once you've mastered the basics. Functions and Tags seem to either be poorly indexed, poorly detailed, or just plain missing from the book altogether. This would not be such a crime if the book had not been titled the 'bible'
We kept having to go back to our Ben Forta CF 4.5 book to look things up, even though we are running CF 6.1. We are going to have to go out and get another MX book for the newer coldfusion functions and features; this one doesn't cut it.
Save yourself time and money by getting a good reference on CF MX, and if you need help with SQL and other technologies buy a good SQL reference, etc.
First CFMX reference I reach for..........2004-12-15
...and usually the last. I've purchased a number of ColdFusion books in the past few years, and always loved the Mastering series for CF 4.5 and 5. When MX came out, I bought both Mastering and the Bible, but truthfully, I barely ever open the Mastering book. Everything I've ever needed to learn has been in the CFMX Bible.
Adam Churvis and crew really know their stuff. Clear, concise discussions on important topics, intelligible diagrams and an index that actually helps you find topics you're looking for quickly! How long has it been since a good technical manual had one of those?!?!
For me, CFCs were something that I was going to get around to eventually, but never seemed to get the time to mess with them, but when I finally did, the Bible taught me everything I needed to know to start building them. The discussion on Web Services finally explained to me what all the hype about them is, and I actually had fun building the sample web service application and learning about XSLT.
I recommend the ColdFusion MX Bible highly, and suggest you keep an eye out for anything else Adam and David Churvis author.
A No-Nonsense Approach to Mastering the Product:.......2004-05-05
Of all the things I COULD say in praise of this book, the single most important feature is that you can actually LEARN from it. The book presents a consistent style and presentation, and is thus an excellent learning tool. There is no "wasted space", discussing irrelevant subjects; no "beating around the bush" getting to the true meat. Here, you know the authors care about the material, and imparting it to YOU, in the most straight-forward way possible. It also is immediately apparent that the authors live in the "trenches" of daily professional experience with all of the product lines.....CF coding, databases, performance issues, product nuances, and the like. There is no substitute for this level of insight; here, you are gaining REAL-WORLD perspective that is SO hard to obtain otherwise. I will stop here, but you get the point....Mr. Churvis, et al, have produced a publication that honors the learning experience. If you want/need to move your web development knowledge UP several notches, this book is one of the best investments you can make.
The Bottom Line.......2004-01-12
I have 2 books about ColdFusion. This one and Dreamweaver MX 2004 with ASP, ColdFusion and PHP: Training from the Source.
This book: Great if you want to learn how to hand-code applications using ColdFusion MX. Very in-depth covering all aspects of ColdFusion. This book does not deal with dialog based apps like Dreamweaver. You can hand-code with DW, however.
The other book (DW MX 2004 w/ASP, CF and PHP: TFTS): Wonderful if you want to learn how to create applications with DreamWeaver specifically as it goes through all the dialog based application development.
Both books are excellent. I have both because I want to know the code behind my apps but I don't necessarily want to have to always type code.
This book is the truth.......2003-11-05
Yeah, I know all of the reviews of this book thus far are great, but there is a reason why...this book touches upon almost any type of information you need to use MX. I found the sections using CFCs especially helpful. The authors not only tell you how to create CFCs, but provide a very useful scenario (using CFCs to hide business logic). The book also gives some good examples of how to integrate Java, COM, XML, etc. into MX. The number of real world type coding examples as well as the step-by-step how to approach is what differentiates this book from a lot of the MX documentation re-make books I have seen (see Mastering ColdFusion MX). This book has a lot great information on everything from thre basics to creating Web Services. Overall, this book lives up to the hype, and is probably the best MX book I've seen.
