Book Description
This is a wide-ranging sourcebook filling a gap in the literature about employment policies and programs for older persons. The contributors represent the perspectives of the individual, the employer, and society-at-large. Their essays consider labor force characteristics; historical trends; key features of social security, pensions, and other retirement matters; age discrimination; economic, social, and political aspects related to employment and the elderly. A lengthy bibliography enhances the use of this major new reference tool for students, scholars, and practitioners in gerontology, social work, and business.

Customer Reviews:
I can't stand Finley and I love this book!.......1999-08-12
I'm sorry but Karen Finley is a big reason why I hate performance art. That's why I was so surprised when I picked up this book and laughed out loud in the middle of the store. It's witty, cynical, beautifully satirical. I couldn't believe this is the same woman who shouts inane trite poetry at her audience in that screechy voice.
If you find this book buy it. If you want it from Amazon, pay for the finding costs. It's that good.
Funny, insightful.......1998-12-09
This book and one other by Woody Allen are the two funniest books I have ever read. She has a true gift. I saw her in person after reading this book, and am now a huge fan.
So many "dysfunctions" I have and see are described in this book. It is a takeoff of the self-help styled books, but is more helpful because it rings so true.
Karen Finley is a wise woman.
Book Description
The first punk album was released in 1977 with The Damned's debut, and era-defining singles by The Sex Pistols and The Clash followed, as well as key records by lesser acts like Buzzcocks and Tom Robinson. '77 is a detailed history of all of the 200 UK punk or new wave artists who released a record in 1977, making the most complete document of the punk scene that thrived before punk's revolutionary spirit burned out.

Encyclopedia 1977ica.......2007-04-11
I nicked off a star because it only covers England and It only covers bands that released their first records in or before 1977.
It also has either a bad translation to English (or Henrik Bech Poulsen does not write English fluently).
However, it is a VERY good book for arcane trivia about ANY punk band from the u.k. - from the Acme Sewage Company to Zhain.

Civilizing Chengdu: Chinese Urban Reform, 1895-1937
ASIN: 0804747784
Release Date: 2003-07-28 |
Book Description
In traditional Chinese cities, a lively street culture was an important part of popular culture, and street life was central to the daily lives of city dwellers, especially the lower classes.
By examining street culture in Chengdu, an under-studied inland city, during the transformative decades between 1870 and 1930, this book explores the relationship between urban commoners and public space, the role that community and neighborhood played in public life, how the reform movement and Republican revolution changed everyday life, and how popular culture and local politics interacted.
Drawing on a rich array of Chinese and Western sources—including archives, local newspapers, personal records, folk literature, and field investigation—the author argues that life in public spaces was radically transformed in Chengdu in the early twentieth century, and that this resulted in the reconstruction of urban public space, the re-creation of people’s public roles, and the redefinition of the relations between ordinary people, local elites, and the state.
The author thus opens a new way of understanding Chinese urban society and culture during these transformative years.
Customer Reviews:
Life on the Streets in Chengdu.......2005-07-24
Scholarship on China has tended to mainly focus on social elites when describing urban life in the imperial and early Republican eras. One of the most famous exceptions to this is Jacques Gernet's 'Daily Life in China on the Eve of the Mongol Invasion, 1250- 1276'. While a few other studies on commoners' everyday lives exist, they tend to focus on coastal cities. Very little scholarship in this area has been done on China's inland urban areas. Wang Di's book marks a major attempt to remedy this dearth of research.
The main concern of the study is to display how life in public spaces was transformed during the early twentieth century, from a place were pedestrians freely joined together during the late 1800's, to a place that became increasingly regulated and politicalized throughout the early 1900's. To describe this Wang uses "three major thematic points".
First, Wang describes how the Qing bureaucratic structure reached only to the county level and as a result had little control over street life. Neighborhoods were organized by the "baojia" system, an informal organization of households in a community participating in keeping local order. The "baojia" system gave commoners freedom to gather in public spaces for a "range of activities associated with commerce, everyday life, and ceremonies"(p.24). Also teahouses and voluntary organizations played an important role in communities.
The second thematic point is the urban reforms of the early twentieth century attempting to regulate street life and as a result altering the relationship between the local elites and commoners (for a discussion of these reforms see Kristin Stapleton's 'Civilizing Chengdu: Chinese Urban Reform 1895-1937', 2000). Although these reforms brought about positive changes overall in leisure activities, material life, and public spaces, Wang believes they nonetheless led to the events of 1911.
The third point describes this phenomenon. The regulation of commoners' public activities that accompanied the reforms caused ordinary citizens to become involved in political struggles. "The year 1911 symbolized commoners' political participation and the transformation from street culture to street politics, which radically affected their daily lives. From then on, the streets were frequently used for political purposes, and ordinary residents were forced to live in the shadows of relentless power struggles"(p.221, also see Robert Kapp's 'Szechwan and the Chinese Republic: Provincial Militarism and Central Power 1911-1938', 1973).
'Street Culture in Chengdu' is rich in its description of everyday life about numerous segments of society during late Qing and early Republican Chengdu. Sections on teahouse culture (the role they played in people's everyday life) and women's role in society (the changes brought about by urban reforms) are particularly interesting.

Customer Reviews:
TV Treasures: A Companion Guide to the Brady Bunch.......2004-11-13
I was very disappointed with this book...not at all what I anticipated.
Excellent book.......2004-10-24
I absolutely love this book. It is wonderful to read and full of all kinds of information regarding the show and its cast. I knew about many things, but some things I didn't know about.
ETA: On page 55, the author incorrectly states "When Carol suggests they get Bobby to tell the truth by giving him a lantern...". I saw that episode and I believe, in fact, it was Peter whom Carol and Mike were trying to coax into telling the truth about the broken vase.
Weak on original Brady content, strong on context.......2002-04-13
As an episode guide, it's okay. It's not as juicy as I would like, but you'll find the episode you're looking for, and a list of the actors in it. Strictly utilitarian.
As a source of original information about the show or the people who made it come to life, it's weak. Most of the material seems to have been collected from other sources.
But this book has one thing that the others lack: context. Context in world history, context in contemporary television, context in the nightly TV schedule. Here, you get a season-by-season overview of what was going on in the world, what was going on in the world of TV, what was going on in the Brady world; the Nielsen ratings; the TV schedule grid for the major networks on the night(s) the show ran.
The overviews aren't thorough. I looked (and will look again, because I can't believe it's not there) for a mention of the Kent State incident in 1970, when the National Guard opened fire on a group of students, killing four. Given the profound effect this had on Americans, it's odd that it's missing. Other events of similar caliber are noted.
For people who want to do serious research, or are just curious about the sociopolitical context of The Brady Bunch, this is a great place to start.
Remember a scene from the BB but can't remember the episode?.......1999-11-14
Then look no further every episode along with some quotes, photos and bio's of the stars are here.. But be warned if it's behind the scenes gossip you want you should probably get Growing up brady or bradymania.
As a Brady fan this book taught me all I know about them.......1999-06-27
I loved the Brady Bunch since i was just a kid of 6 years old. I love it so much I watch it on Nick whenever i get the chance. Reading this book has helped me understand the Brady ways and in a way brought me closer to each Brady. It would be my dream come true if I could meet the bunch. Well in closing the book was a great experience for me as well as all other brady fans thank you for that wonderful input on the Brady Bunch.
