    Book Description

The tourism industry did not come into world prominence until the inauguration of transcontinental jet travel. This was introduced in 1958 and gave birth to world tourism as we know it today. Because tourism is a new business, most legislators who approve government budgets do not fully understand it as it cannot be measured in material terms as can be done with industries such as oil, steel and cargo. This has resulted in shoestring budgets for departments of tourism. The invisible export, tourism, quickly grew to become the world's largest industry creating jobs, and facilitating exports worldwide. High international tourism arrivals have become synonymous with prosperity. However, due to its invisible nature, tourism has escaped the eyes of most legislators throughout the world. Those few countries that have recognized the importance of tourism and budget accordingly, have reaped the benefit to fuel their economy. This opportunity is available for any destination and the rewards are limitless. This book was written to place the world spotlight upon tourism and to become a manual for any destination wishing to grow their economy. An increase in international arrivals is the shortest route to prosperity. The content of this book begins with a look at world conditions for tourism following 9/11 and discusses tourism versus terrorism. From there we stress the importance of a healthy tourism budget with emphasis on exactly what world leaders need to know to understand the importance of funding the growth of the international visitor count. To reach the lucrative U.S. travel market one must understand how their travel industry is structured. Our book describes this and how travel packages are created and marketed within there. In order to attain sustained tourism your destination must be tourist friendly. What a tourist friendly destination should look like is explained fully, together with many suggestions to build repeat visitors. We have filled many chapters in the field of marketing tourism. Insights are provided for the use of icons and marquee names to promote your destination plus a complete chapter with general marketing ideas to dramatically increase your arrivals. Another chapter is dedicated to methods on the proper utilization of the Internet with information on optimizing search engines to access your web site. The chapter on maximizing results from your attendance at travel industry trade shows will show you how to build relationships which will produce rich rewards. Trade shows are not a vacation but a hands on marketing experience. Methods of further increasing your international arrivals are found in our chapter on recognizing and marketing niche groups.

This book examines for the first time the detrimental effects of foreign loans on domestic prices and inflation in Peru. Based on a macroeconomic examination of Peru during 1960-1980, the author concludes that while private and official loans initially have benefitted the Peruvian economy, their long-term effect has been to reinforce inflation.

3 out of 5 stars The new anti-liberals.......2000-07-10

Sad to say, but it looks like the war against political correctness has been won.

I use the word sad not because I am a defender of PC dogma but because, like many journalists, I have always been able to rely on PC-bashing to generate 700-1,000 words of cultural commentary on short notice.

In the early- and mid-'90s, the trick was simple. You just dug up a tale of leftist censorship gone berserk (American liberal arts colleges and Canadian law schools served them up with clockwork regularity); and then spewed forth about how the episode in question (the expulsion, hiring, firing, postering, de-postering, promotion, demotion, speech cancellation, etc.) demonstrated nothing less than a full-blown return to gulag Stalinism.

Well, that party is over. In the United States, campus speech codes have been declared unconstitutional; affirmative action (and diversity, the fuzzy doctrine that underpins it) is dying; multiculturalism has been widely discredited; and state-sanctioned bilingualism is on the way out. The anti-PC backlash has been only slightly less successful in Canada. Although the sterile mantras of orthodox pluralism have survived north of 49, the only people who still recite them with a straight face are the water cooler mandarins who staff our governmental agencies and NGOs.

For all of this, and more, I blame A. Alan Borovoy. As long-time general counsel to the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, Toronto Star columnist, and all around free speech gadfly, he has done as much as any Canadian to alert our nation to the scourge of censorship. His most recent book, The New Anti-Liberals, is a wide-ranging attack on doctrinaire leftists, written for the benefit of those Canadians he has not yet convinced.

Of course, Borovoy has not fought his ideological battles without allies. This decade has produced a number of memorable anti-PC champions, such as Dinesh D'Souza (Illiberal Education, The End of Racism), Richard Bernstein (Dictatorship of Virtue); and, in Canada, Neil Bissoondath (Selling Illusions), and John Fekete (Moral Panic: Biopolitics Rising).

For those who have read these books, the dozens of horror stories that fuel Borovoy's denunciation of PC will not be new. Although many of these tales came to the public light through Borovoy's efforts, all have been picked up and reported by other authors: the 1993 controversy over the production of Showboat at the North York centre for the Performing Arts, for instance; or the Osgoode Hall law student who claimed sexual harassment when asked to write a legal brief defending the constitutionality of a hypothetical anti-pornography law; or the 1996 effort by the Canadian Jewish Congress to stop Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan from keeping a speaking engagement in Toronto.

Borovoy's thesis is that while liberalism was once threatened primarily by racists and sexists who defended the old non-egalitarian status quo, liberalism's new enemies are orthodox anti-racists and anti-sexists. These anti-liberals are so obsessed with their secular orthodoxy, Borovoy argues, that they are willing to sacrifice freedom of expression to advance their cause.

This argument is not new, of course. It is a central theme of all the books I have mentioned (and many others, such as Allan Bloom's 1987 masterpiece, The Closing of the American Mind). Still it hardly seems fair to accuse Borovoy of writing a trite book, given that it was substantially by his own efforts (in Canada, at least) that this critique of modern identity politics became so widely accepted.

Moreover, there is also the question of credibility. In the case of many of PC's most strident enemies, there is a commonly held suspicion that the attack on political correctness is just a smokescreen for simple, old school prejudice.

In this respect, Borovoy is more than clean. Through his work with the Canadian Civil Liberties Association and the Labour Committee for Human Rights, he has spent the last four decades fighting for the rights of women, Jews, blacks, and native peoples. Before the Ontario Human Rights Commission even existed, he campaigned actively for its creation.

In other words, he is just about the last person who could be accused of reactionary attitudes.

                    Book Description

The Incomplete Projects reevaluates the role of Marxist theory in the study of culture and makes a case for Marxist cultural analysis as a relevant political practice. Part I provides the reader with a comprehensive and lively overview of Marxist thought. Part II is a collection of case studies analyzing a wide range of cultural objects, from the novels of Philip K. Dick to the television series M*A*S*H. The objects of study are either American or British in origin, reflecting the dominance of Anglo-American culture in our new global economy; they are also what Freedman describes as 'middle culture,' falling somewhere between the bifurcated categories of high and low art. Through these case studies, Carl Freedman shows that it is impossible to make sense of capitalism without the Marxist critique and demonstrates that cultural analysis is an especially appropriate form of discourse in which to begin thinking politically. This book is particularly timely and relevant to anyone interested in the study of culture.

5 out of 5 stars An absorbing look at human culture.......2003-04-15

The Incomplete Projects: Marxism, Modernity, And The Politics Of Culture by Carl Freedman (Professor of English, Louisiana State University) is a thoughtful and scholarly examination and analysis of the role of Marxist theory plays in the study of human culture. Part I delves into a solid groundwork of Marxist thought, and Part II applies the Marxist vision to a wide variety of popular culture works, including the novels of Philip K. Dick and the television series M*A*S*H. An absorbing look at human culture, lifestyle and entertainment, The Incomplete Projects is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to 20th Century Cultural Studies reference collections and reading lists.

As another reviewer has said, this is the companion book to the tbs dinner and a movie weekly show. I am a big fan of the show and will actually make these recipes to watch with the movies. Some of my favorite movie and recipe combinations from this book are: The Cutting Edge, The Breakfast Club, The Outsiders, Fargo, Groundhog Day, and too many more to count. Hopefully, in a few years they will release another edition featuring even more of their wit, movies, and recipes.

This grandmother loves cookbooks, both to use and to read, and this is the first, of the couple of hundred in my collection in which I did not find a thing that I would ever make nor did I particularly enjoy reading. Someone said the recipes are easy. I'd like to meet that person, for no one I know would describe them as such. (Invite me to dinner, please.) "Easy" to me does not include steps such as "Trim 4-5 lb. duck of excess fat. Starting with the front of the neck, carefully pierce the skin . . . " Or trimming "1 1/2 lbs of duck breast meat, 1 1/2 lbs duck leg & thigh meat of sinew", cutting it into 1" cubes, combining it with 12 other ingredients, chilling it in the freezer, then grinding it all up & stuffing it into sausage casings, thereby creating a weiner fit to serve with "The Game". Headcheese ("Scrub 1 pig's head, brains removed, with 4 pig's feet" to begin, was never "easy" in my book. Ingredients regularly include those one would find in a much larger city than the one that I live in, the expense (3 live lobsters for the Jackpot Pie), and the time and trouble involved combine to make this a less-than-useful choice. Call me a midwestern grannie, but these recipes strike me as perfect examples of the current fashion of combining ever stranger ingredients in ever less convenient manner. (Grill your vegetables before putting them in soup, top your twice-baked potatoes with Japanese eggplant - we'll pass.)

Once we get to the dessert & brunch section, the recipes are less complicated, but go to the other extreme re innovation - here we can run down to the corner Wal-Mart for the ingredients to a fruit crisp, pecan pie, biscuits and gravy, pancakes, et al, but were we really needing a new recipe for these?

I also seem to have a differently-affected funnybone than the author & other reviewers. Reading the list of ingredients for chocolate fondue - cream, dark chocolate, almonds, liquor, ladyfinger, fruit, 1 Swedish-made cheese enlarger, 1 warranty card for Swedish-made cheese enlarger . . . somehow failed to bring forth chuckles, guess I'm just weird.

I gave it one star only because I couldn't choose 0 stars.

Dinner & A Movie is a fun, unique way to enjoy some of the best movies out there AND enjoy some great food. The cookbook is just as much fun. The humor and irreverent spirit are still there along with some great food ideas. Grab the book, hit the store, and have a great evening.... with dinner and a movie and some friends!

This is a great cookbook for entertaining! The recipes are fun and most are easy! You can plan a whole menu, have some friends over, and pop in the movies!

5 out of 5 stars A great way to have a unique "evening at home".......1997-02-06

If you love movies and food, then this is the book for you! With recipes taken from the TBS series "Dinner & A Movie," you can sit at home and reminisce about your teen angst years watching "Pretty in Pink" and eating Pretty in Pink Salmon Steaks. The majority of the films used for this great book are humorous, cult classics that range from James Bond flicks to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" and Jim Carrey's "Dumb and Dumber." The recipes are not only easy to follow, but filled with silly remarks from Paul and Annabelle (the two "chefs" from the show), and the book comes with an official "Dinner & a Movie" apron, so your date doesn't need to know how much of a mess you made cooking

the book is a great reference guide for pci-x
                          (a relatively new standard).
everything about this computer architecture is explained in details.the only limit is the purpose of this book, that remain in the bounds of a reference guide and not a programming & architecture guide.
the differences between pci and pci-x are clearly explained.
if you don't know anything about standard pci architecture and assembly programming, this book is not for you; but
if you are a system designer interested in pci-x, this book is a must.
