      Book Description

This book examines two eras of Chinese history that have commonly been viewed as periods of state disintegration or retreat. And they were--at the central level. When re-examined at the local level, however, both are revealed as periods of state building. In both the Nanjing decade of Guomindang rule (1927-1937) and the early post-Mao reform era (1980-1992), both national and local factors shaped local state building and created variations in local state structures and practices. This book focuses on one key area of the state, taxation and public finance, to trace the processes of local state building in these two eras. Using the records of local tax and finance offices in the Tianjin area and in Guangdong province, the author maps the process by which these county-level offices grew.

This book highlights variation in local state structures and practices between localities and between the central and local governments. As the author shows, this variation is important because it results in regional differences in state-society relations and affects central state capacity in terms of the local state's ability to implement central state policies as well as its own.

1 out of 5 stars Big low class book!.......2007-04-25

Come on! This book is a low class load of it! The University of Mississippi is the best college ever! What low life guy would sit there and write about good colleges? This author probably didn't even go to college or he probably wasn't even accepted anywhere! This book series is just low! For all of you Ole Miss fans out there, tell this guy he is just a tacky low life!

I can't even put all of my anger in this review! This Paul Finebaum guy needs to get a life, if he wants to be an author, he shouldn't be a scummy low life and talk about the best college ever (Ole Miss). Ole Miss is such a great college, did you know the Ole Miss softball team is the 4th in the nation?

So when this Finebaum guy types on his keyboard, he should make real use of the keyboard!

5 out of 5 stars Not bad considering the source.......2004-07-03

This Finebaum fellow just seeks to be inflammatory and is an Alabama homer, but most of his take on the Rebs is dead on. What's even more hysterical is that some Reb fans came here and pretended to be real people who were really upset. What a bunch of clowns.

If you are a Rebel fan you won't get it. If you know Rebel fans you'll get it. Some of you Rebs may want to read it because it's a pretty good look in the mirror for most of you.

1 out of 5 stars This is Finebaum's best book by far. If you are mentally.......2004-04-27

retarded that is. What a loser.
Check out Chris Warner's "A Tailgater's Guide To SEC Football" for a real book on the nation's toughest football playing conference. Don't waste your time with Finebum's journalism.

5 out of 5 stars This book is hilarious!.......2001-10-29

If you're a State fan, you should definitely read this book. It will make you laugh until your ribs hurt, then refer back to it often for more. Never before has a book about Ole Miss been truer. This book should be featured in every Library, and be present in every home throughout Mississippi.

The author of this book should be commended for his style and humor in writing this book. Looking forward to more from him. Don't keep us waiting, give us more!

          Book Description

The Doors continue to be one of the world's most popular and influential rock bands. But hitched as they were to the unsteady genius of Jim Morrison, the Doors were much more than merely a rock band. In The Doors: Strange Days, Chuck Crisafulli conveys the intellectual energy and inspiration behind the songs of the Doors and the writing of Jim Morrison and Robby Krieger, recalling the specific time and place - Southern California in the '60s - in which the songs were created. The Doors: Strange Days spans the band's entire career, including the albums recorded after Jim Morrison's death. Many witnesses to the Doors' history have been interviewed for this book, including college friends, professional acquaintances, and musical contemporaries. From the explosive first single, "Break on Through," to their biggest hit, "Light My Fire," as well as the songs of the cryptic final album, An American Prayer, Crisafulli delves into the stories behind the songs that attest to the Doors' lasting impact.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read, Visually Enjoyable Book........2002-08-07

"When The Music's Over" is a great book dealing with the stories behind The Doors' songs. It is very well written with a deep insight into the music and legacy of Jim Morrison. Part of this is due to the fact that the book's consultant, Dave MiMartino is a big fan (he was even present at the infamous 1969 Miami concert where Morrison was accused of exposing himself in a pre-Marilyn Manson age). But those who look inside the book itself will be surprised that it is not just about the songs, it compiles comments by critics, poets, rockers and is a neat visual history of the band and its music. We get in detail stories behind the rise of the band, the impact they had on the L.A. scene even before they became famous. It closely looks at the influences Morrison had in life like poets in the tradition of Rimbaud and ancient shamanistic religions. "When The Music's Over" is a testament of the The Doors' importance in popular music, the book also goes into the period when the band still tried to release albums even after Morrison died (there is an interesting piece on how Iggy Pop sang "L.A. Woman" at a Morrison death anniversary event at the Whiskey A Go-Go in 1974). Visually this is an awesome read, there are photos for every subject and name, great shots of The Doors performing and of Morrison acting-out the theatrical touches so common today in rock music. And the writing done about each song is really good, with deep insight into the lyrics and inspirations. Immediately you feel like listening to each and every song. This is worth the price, there have been cases where the book has great pictures but bad writing as was the case with "Dark Star," which had some valuable photos but the author seemed more resentful towards Morrison and his art than someone who would actually wanna write a book about it. Doors music is timeless and never loses it's power, on any given year, month or day you will find a rock band weather popular or underground, play one of their songs. They have spawned many styles, theatrics, ideas and imitators. "When The Music's Over" is must for any Doors fan, rock fanatic or someone looking for a history behind a music that changed them, it proves that the music is indeed, not over.

          4 out of 5 stars Insightful.......2002-01-23

Anyone interested in the Doors will love this book. As the title says, it has stories about each song-- how they developed, who wrote them, who they're about, etc. Plenty of good pictures as well. Plus a chronology and discography of the Doors.

1 out of 5 stars Old book in new package.......2001-02-22

I have not read this book. But it seems to be same as a 1995 book called "Moonlight Drive (The Stories behind Every Door's Song" by Chuck Crisafulli and Dave DiMartine as consultant editor.

The music of the Doors lives on, and writers and publishes continue to make money from the fans of the Doors.

4 out of 5 stars Good insight into classic songs!.......2001-01-29

It took a while to get this book but I am glad that I did. It's an excellent study of the inspiration behind some of the greatest songs ever heard. The writing is rather simple and is a little bland but there is no denyting the excitement one gets from reading this informative account on one of the greatest bands Rock and Roll has ever seen! If you are interested in The Doors' music than this book is a good place to start.

            Book Description

Because they are so often told as news, contemporary legends force us to reevaluate life as we know it. They confront us with macabre, fantastic, horrific, or hilarious characters and events that seem to come straight out of myths and folktales, but are presented as present day events. The difficulty is that it is not at all easy to decide whether these often disturbing stories should be treated as reliable or dismissed as fantasy.

The legends explored in this book are some of the most bizarre, gruesome, and politically sensitive stories in the contemporary legend canon. If we believe them we must conclude that our bodies are in constant danger of destruction or defilement. At any moment our corpus may be invaded by noxious creatures, or deliberately infected with deadly disease, or raided to provide donor organs for sick foreigners. Even children's bodies are not safe from predators, and those we love most may seek to destroy us. These are "winter's tales," the stuff of nightmares. But they are potent and important.

In this book Gillian Bennett traces the cultural history of six well-known legends that have been current in Europe and America from medieval times to the present day and have appeared in broadsides, ballads, myths, ancient and modern legends, novels, plays, films, television shows, and in stories told in the oral tradition. The book shows that contemporary legends are not just silly tales which can be dismissed as trivial and "untrue." Good stories though they are and embellished with fantastic details, they reveal much about the concerns and fears of everyday life and demonstrate the limits of knowledge and power in the modern world.

"As a child of the movies, I was torn between wanting to be Julian Marsh, the Broadway producer in 42nd Street ... and Hildy Johnson, the hellbent-for-leather reporter in The Front Page," writes Don Hewitt in his engaging autobiography. Luckily for him, he found a way to be both at CBS News, most notably as producer of 60 Minutes. Hewitt barely knew what television was when a fellow print journalist told him of an opening at CBS in 1948 ("You mean, where you sit at home and watch little pictures in a box?" he asked), but his decisive personality suited the new medium's spontaneous techniques. Born in 1922 and raised in New Rochelle, New York, he sees himself as an average guy whose middle-of-the-road political and social attitudes are shared by the American television audience. He modeled 60 Minutes on Life magazine: "a family friend in the home of millions of Americans each week, serious and light-hearted in the same issue" with one prime directive--to tell a story.

In chatty, colloquial prose, Hewitt hits the show's high and low points, including a frank discussion of the compromises made to air an interview with Big Tobacco whistle-blower Jeffrey Wigand and a blistering critique of the way those compromises were depicted in the movie The Insider. He pays warm tribute to his reporters, particularly Mike Wallace, writes appreciatively of CBS founder William Paley, and candidly discusses his differences with Paley's successor, Laurence Tisch. Hewitt doesn't pretend to be a saint; he accepts the mingled imperatives of journalism and commerce that drive TV news without (usually) sounding too defensive. His memoir pungently chronicles the evolution of broadcast journalism and expresses faith in the idealism that still fires the men and women who practice it. --Wendy Smith

            Book Description

One of the towering figures of television recounts his adventures in broadcast journalism, from TV's earliest days through the controversies and challenges that face the news business today.

Don Hewitt is the most successful producer in the history of television news. In more than a half century with CBS News, he has been responsible for many of the greatest moments in television history, including the first broadcasts of political conventions in 1948; the first Kennedy-Nixon debate in 1960; and, most spectacularly, for the past thirty-two years, 60 Minutes, the news program that has redefined television journalism, for which he has been the creator, executive producer, and driving force.

In Tell Me a Story, Hewitt presents his own remarkable life story, from his time as a reporter for Stars & Stripes during World War II, to the heady exhilaration of the early days of television, to the triumphs and controversies of 60 Minutes. Hewitt has been at the center of events, and his book is populated by the leading cultural and political figures of our century-Charles Lindbergh, Frank Sinatra, William S. Paley, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Bill and Hillary Clinton, and many others-as well as the all-star roster of journalists with whom he has worked.

Hewitt also speaks bluntly, with affection and humor, about the promise and the shortcomings of television news, and offers surprising perspectives on its continued power and potential, as we move into a new media environment. "I may not know a lot," Hewitt is fond of saying, "but I think I know how to tell a story." Never has his storytelling talent been on better display than in the pages of this extraordinary book.

I am in Hewitt's business myself (in another part of the world). His book and his experiences give me a lot to think about.

            3 out of 5 stars Television Pioneer.......2004-09-30

I've always enjoyed reading the stories of industry pioneers, no matter what industry and Hewitt is a living pioneer of early television news. From his career as a merchant Marine in World War II up unto his creation and production of 60 minutes, Hewitt shares anecdotes and accolades of the people he's worked with and against.

He began in television news back when the Murrows and the Cronkites wouldn't have considered leaving radio. He produced the only Kennedy-Nixon debate and is convinced that not wearing makeup on TV cost Nixon the election. He didn't really care for Nixon much post Watergate, but unlike most of the newsmen of his generation, he didn't really fall for the aura of John Kennedy either.

Hewitt tells of how he convinced Frank Sinatra to sit down with Walter Cronkite in the mid 1960s, and how Sinatra blew up when questioned about his mob ties. Luckily for Hewitt he was around long enough to outlive Sinatra and get the real story from his daughter Tina 30 years later. The story gives more plausibility to the Kennedy assassination being a mob hit.

The latter half of the book focuses on Bill Clinton's infamous interview during the 1992 election and how Hewitt's treatment of James Carville got the show barred from the White House.

Near the end he goes in to a deep explanation of Lowell Bergman and the inaccuracies of the film THE INSIDER. After explaining for pages and pages of how Bergman is disingenuous, he catches us off guard by saying that he would have forgiven the filmmakers everything had they cast Robert Redford in his role. Philip Baker Hall isn't an actor, that's a dormitory, Hewitt jokes.

Hewitt is an interesting guy with a great life and it's hard not to like this book.

5 out of 5 stars A pioneer in TV Land!.......2004-07-23

Ok, so he isn't a writing genius, but he KNOWS television and how to keep a quality broadcast show on top. The premise of the 60 minutes show is to "tell us something we don't know!" And that it does! Don Hewitt is a pioneer. When you read his book, you find out the conception of ideas that began with Hewitt.

He is humorous and shares some funny anecdotes, and yet, he keeps the story going with a cool conversational voice. It's an easy read. Hewitt shares facts about the birth of the show, the cast, and the excellent collection of guests. There are several pictures of him with Presidents and other celebrity notables.

Take time to read this book. You will not only be entertained, but you will be informed. He knows his history!!....MzRizz

3 out of 5 stars Hewitt's Medium is Not the Printed Word.......2002-11-24

I expected of Don Hewitt's book something on par, at least professionally, with "60 Minutes"; not so with "Tell Me A Story." This is an okay book-- always straight forward, occasionally telling, a few juicy tidbits-- it's just not a well-crafted, fascinating book. Don Hewitt is a masterful producer with a keen instinct for a good story. The medium of television is his, hands down. Hewitt is not a fine storyteller however. When Hewitt breaks into a sprint of passionate interest, the reader soon begins to realize that the excitement is all about Don, written by Don, and relived through Don's (perhaps) revisionist memory.

In brief, if this were lying about at a church booksale, I'd recommend you snap it up at a tenth the price-- great beach or bath reading.

4 out of 5 stars More integrated usability design.......2004-04-30

A nice management level explanation of the importance of usability design and how to incorporate it organically into the entire iterative design process. Schaffer emphasises finding the right people, starting at senior management, as much as the tasks that the people then do. The 'institutionalisation' in the title refers to this emphasis. He contrasts this with standard usability texts that focus on the methodology instead of the people who have to perform it.

Speaking of methodology, he devotes an entire chapter to it. He shows a figure of the old way, where the design of a technical solution was done first, followed by a design of the interface that would overlay it. He suggests reversing this order. Not bad, and probably valid in most cases. But there is one important case where the old way is still viable. Research. Where it is not certain that a solution exists. By necessity, investigation and implementation of a solution should come first. Because if it cannot be done, interface design is moot. Granted, most of his book refers to a commercial product, so the rejoinder could be that a research situation is outside the book's scope. But just keep this in mind when reading it.

He also includes a very topical section on the challenges of offshore staffings. (Indians, anyone?) It is certainly possible, though not trivial, to integrate such staff into the entire design cycle, in his experience. Of course, some American readers will find this unsettling. But it should not be a surprise. As offshore staff gain in experience, inevitably they will be able to do this.

4 out of 5 stars Good book if you need to educate your company.......2004-04-15

I read and highlighted this book with the promise of my manager to read it after me (or at least the highlighting!). I am hoping the book will move up the management structure and make a difference. I believe the book is somewhat remedial if you have been in the usability world for very long, but if you are trying to influence an organization and educate them as to the value, methodology and how-to of usability, this book will help.

4 out of 5 stars How to make doing usability right an institutional feature.......2004-03-12

The usability of computer interfaces is like art, essential, but difficult to quantify. However, with the proper approach, both can be taught and the best principles of usability can be formalized into a process. Creating such a process is not easy, requiring an ongoing commitment. Schaffer identifies four phases in the process of making usability issues a fundamental component of software design. They are the startup, setup, organization and long-term operations phases.
Like all startup phases when creating a process, institutionalizing usability begins with a change in mindset. This is often a response to a disaster, but the best people are proactive and realize that good usability is good business. As is the case in nearly all areas of software development, implementation of a process requires an executive champion, someone who understands the value and continues to insist that the proper quality be maintained. There is no question that this is the most important precondition to making usability an institutional requirement.
Schaffer steps through each of the phases, breaking them down into specific components. Issues such as standards, staffing, staff training, implementation strategies, planning and tools used in testing are covered in detail. In all cases, he gives detailed explanations of what to do and repeatedly emphasizes that a proactive strategy is generally the best one. I found his charts of boring to cool versus confusing to usable to be amusing and quite accurate.
As the population using computers has shifted from those with a great deal of computer expertise to the population in general, the height of the usability bar has been dramatically raised. Even computer experts are growing more impatient when using computers, expecting things to work quickly, accurately and be visually obvious. Therefore, making things easy to use is now as much a business necessity as the underlying function of the software. This book will teach you the ways to do it right once as well as how to formalize the process so that you do it right every time.
