Book Description
This volume outlines strategies for managing public debt, developing government securities markets, and coordinating those activities with monetary management through legal, administrative, and operational arrangements. Both transition and market economies are surveyed. The analysis draws partly on the literature on the microstructure of markets and auction systems and on selected country experiences.

Description:
This paper uses graph-theoretic methods to investigate the causal relationships between agriculture, money, interest rates, prices, and real GDP in 12 countries during the years 1869-1929. We find that agricultural production directly and indirectly causes real GDP in two-thirds of the cases. Monetary shocks also play an important causal role in about half the cases, but unlike agriculture, the causal links are usually indirect through other variables to real GDP. The direct causal link between money and prices is also particularly strong. Between 1869 and 1929, money causes prices in nearly all of the countries in the sample.

Book Description
Causality in Macroeconomics examines causality while taking macroeconomics seriously. A pragmatic and realistic philosophy is joined to a macroeconomic foundation that refines Herbert Simon's well-known work on causal order to make a case for a structural approach to causality. The structural approach is used to understand modern rational expectations models, regime switching models, Granger causality, vector autoregressions, the Lucas critique, and concept exogeneity. Techniques of causal inference based on patterns of stability and instability in the face of identified regime changes are developed and illustrated in two empirical case studies.
Customer Reviews:
The Lucas critique of econometrics is a footnote to Keynes.......2004-09-05
The basic fundamental flaw in this book is the author's failure to understand the subtle nuances contained in Keynes's critique of Tinbergen's econometric approach in the 1939-40 exchange in the Economic Journal between Keynes and Tinbergen.The omissions in Hoover's(H)exposition are obvious on pages 182-183-184 and in footnote 32 on page 182.Keynes is not just a percursor of Robert Lucas. The Lucas critique represents a small subset of Keynes's much,much larger critique of Tinbergen.Lucas restricts his critique to the effects of changes in government policy on impacting the changing expectations of private sector decision makers over time.Keynes's critique includes not only this variable but quite a few additional variables ,such as changes in technology and innovation,changes in consumer preferences,as well as changes in the existing institutional,political,social and international structure that creates new inductive patterns affecting expectations of the future.There is nothing in the Lucas critique that is new,original,innovative,novel or creative.Keynes gave a general and systematic criticism of Tinbergen which includes the criticisms of Lucas.A vastly superior book on the topics that H tried to cover is the book by Hugo Kuezenkamp,titled"Probability,Econometrics and Truth".It was published in 2001,the same year as the Hoover volume appeared.Not surprisingly,Hoover does not cite any of Keuzenkamp's published work.Keuzenkamp recognized that the "Lucas" critique had already been done by Keynes in 1939-1940.Nowhere in Keuzenkamp's book is the "Lucas"critique mentioned.The reason is that its already all contained in Keynes's analysis of 1939-1940 ,which follows directly from Keynes's analysis in Parts III and V of the TP.Hoover needs to read this book if he ever intends to revise his own book in a future edition.

Description:
Our objective in this paper is to identify the nature of the dependence or causal relationship that exists between US inflation and commodity prices using recent methods of linear cointegration, and non-linear Granger causality. The main contribution is the construction of a noisy chaotic multivariate model, using the bivariate noisy Mackey-Glass process, to approximate the complex dynamics that determine the specific character of the observed causality and feedback.

Description:
Tests in vector autoregressive (VAR) models are typically based on large-sample approximations, involving the use of asymptotic distributions or bootstrap techniques. After documenting that such methods can be very misleading even with fairly large samples, we propose a general simulation-based technique that allows one to control completely test levels in parametric VAR models. In particular, we show that maximized Monte Carlo tests [Dufour, 2005. Monte Carlo tests with nuisance parameters: a general approach to finite-sample inference and nonstandard asymptotics in econometrics. Journal of Econometrics, forthcoming] can provide provably exact tests for such models, whether they are stationary or integrated. Applications to order selection and causality testing are considered as special cases. The technique developed is applied to a VAR model of the U.S. economy.

Description:
We introduce a novel non-parametric methodology to test for the dynamical time evolution of the lag-lead structure between two arbitrary time series. The method consists in constructing a distance matrix based on the matching of all sample data pairs between the two time series. Then, the lag-lead structure is searched as the optimal path in the distance matrix landscape that minimizes the total mismatch between the two time series, and that obeys a one-to-one causal matching condition. We apply our method to the question of the causality between the US stock market and the treasury bond yields and confirm earlier results on a causal arrow of the stock markets preceding the Federal Reserve Funds adjustments as well as the yield rates at short maturities in the period 2000-2003. The application to inflation, inflation change, GDP growth rate and unemployment rate unearths non-trivial causal relationships: the GDP changes lead inflation especially since the 1980s, inflation changes lead GDP only in the 1980 decade, and inflation leads unemployment rates since the 1970s. In addition, we detect multiple competing causality paths in which one can have inflation leading GDP with a certain lag time and GDP feeding back/leading inflation with another lag time.

Description:
We propose methods for testing hypothesis of non-causality at various horizons, as defined in Dufour and Renault (Econometrica 66, (1998) 1099-1125). We study in detail the case of VAR models and we propose linear methods based on running vector autoregressions at different horizons. While the hypotheses considered are nonlinear, the proposed methods only require linear regression techniques as well as standard Gaussian asymptotic distributional theory. Bootstrap procedures are also considered. For the case of integrated processes, we propose extended regression methods that avoid nonstandard asymptotics. The methods are applied to a VAR model of the US economy.

Book Description
This how-to manual gives the skinny on a wide range of skills you'll need to thrive in the Northwest, including ways to shuck an oyster without amputating a finger, how to start your own garage rock band, and what to do if you suddenly find yourself wearing a mountain lion. The paranoid will especially enjoy the Deal with Disasters section, which gives instructions for how to survive a tsunami, what to do if you're bitten by a rattler, and routes to take if you need to escape a wildfire. Great for earnest visitors, brave newcomers, or grizzled old Northwest-lifers--real information, just in case.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty funny book!.......2003-06-03
Well aside from the fact that Greg makes fun of my favorite Northwest clothing outfitter, Filson, its great! I'm a newcomer but can pass for a native as I've been here long enough to grow moss on my toes and I still found some interesting facts and tidbits that I either once knew and have forgotten or maybe never knew. Anyone from California thinking about moving North should read this. We get cloudy and rainy weather, this is a temperate rainforest after all so don't move here and then complain about the weather. Get some goretex and some wool and some waxed cotten coats and get outside and do something! (like split a cord of wood! Go Fishing! Go for a hike!, Go skiing.) Contary to popular myths, skin does not disolve when wet. It is possible to be warm and comfortable when out in in the rain. The sun will come out for good by Mid July and stays out until Late September and early October. Until then work hard and save your vacation days.
A Northwest Must Have.......2003-01-08
I've lived in Oregon my entire life and still discovered some great insights in Mr. Eiden's humorous (and educational) review of the Northwest. I particularly enjoyed "how to order a latte." A great gift, too.
Upfront seriousness & laid back humor.......2003-01-02
I have been around one half of the world four different times and I wish that I read this book before my travels. It goes beyond essential, consider it a manual. Gregg should go international.

Book Description
"One of the most enchanting of all show-business memoirs." -Gary Giddins.
Reissued to coincide with the paperback publication of the definitive Bing biography by Gary Giddins, here is "a collection of anecdotes and reminiscences that is as warm and witty as any Crosby performance. [Bing] could have surely become a full-time writer had his schedule not been taken up with being one of the great entertainers of the century." -Will Friedwald
Customer Reviews:
Yup, Lucky........2005-04-21
Crosby says about himself that he had no skill at acting or dancing and that his singing was more gimmick than talent, a strategy learned in vaudeville. If he hadn't been in town at the same time as Paul Whiteman, his life would have taken a different turn, and that would have been okay with him. As it was, he blew around in a wind that carried him to fame, fortune, race tracks, golf courses and professional friends. Otherwise, he made no contribution, he says, except for two recordings, and he isn't kidding. What we have here is a modest little man with a great deal to be modest about. Vain, conceited, self-centered, pretentious, affable--what media turns into icon. The book itself is a series of anecdotes distilled from conversations with a ghostwriter, interrupted when Bing swaps a highbrow word for a lowbrow one, reaching for distinction. He had an ache for attention, evidently, but his book never deals with the hungers of his personality. So he's not as interesting as the people he mentions, sometimes indiscretely, despite his own penchant for privacy. It was a wonderful ride. I'm glad he enjoyed it. But yesteryear's wisecrack is this year's yawn. For a show biz autobiography that sizzles with self-knowledge, read Oscar Levant's or Lennie Bruce's.
The great voice of the century.......2004-08-11
Pete Martin, the famous journalist and profile writer who spent a lot of his time working like a beaver for the classic Saturday Evening Post of the 1940s and 1950s--the Norman Rockwell years--and who departed for LOOK magazine when Rockwell did--wrote the bulk of this book, but he did it in close cooperation with the not always easy to work with Bing Crosby, who had attained a new plateau of popularity in the 1950s (when the book was first published). It seemed as if he had everything: wonderful talent, a devoted family, a gift not only for musical comedy but for drama too, as his turns in The Country Girl and Going My Way indicated. Though filmed considerably later than the period he describes in this book, "der Bingle" did a great job as a serial killer in Ira Levin's medical thriller, Dr. Cook's Garden. Bing had a warm, jazz-inspired delivery that wrapped itself around air like it was filled with honey, he was surely the warmest singer who ever lived. If his private life was more complicated than the Saturday Evening Post was then willing to print, what we have in CALL ME LUCKY is another side to the many-faceted Bing Crosby, a construction of grit, daring and tenderness that remains remarkably durable twenty years after his death.
Bing by Bing.......2004-02-28
I read this book as a teen years ago and just purchased the new paperback version. Bing's voice, even as filtered by Pete Martin, is evident here. He's not a deep 'teller of tales' in order to let us see all his personal angst. What we do see is a guy who struggles with parenting spirited boys, who grieves the loss of a wife, who downplays his talent and, as the book's title suggests, considers himself merely lucky. There's a lot of humor in this book and the caring Crosby feels for his family and his fellow entertainers is quite evident if not overly 'blatant'. Another perfect companion to the Gary Giddins book "Pocketful of Dreams"!
Undeniably Craosby.......1998-01-15
Bing Crosby comes to life in "Call Me Lucy". Each word, each sentence, every portion evokes Crosby's wonderful exalted form of speaking. This is not a tell-all biography, but rather a wonderful recant of anecdotes and humorous observations. Crosby tells amusing stories of Bob Hope, Paul Whiteman, Oscar Levant, Groucho Marx, Al Jolson, Fred Astaire, his wife, and his kids. He also spends time telling stories of his adventures on the golf course, in movies, on radio, and traveling the country with Paul Whiteman's band.
What's more, he tells the true stories of his rise to the top of show business. From being a team with his Washington pal Al Rinker, to getting the Academy Award for "Going My Way" in 1944.
In addition to this, he speaks frankly about his wife (who died not to long before the book was originally published). An honest, and teary moment.
All together, "Call Me Lucky" is a must to any Crosby fan. It's undeniably Crosby!

Book Description
The end of the Cold War marked not only the end of communism, but the emergence of a globalized world order and a crisis in national and ideological meaning. In this provocative and incisive book, Zaki Laidi argues that no power in our globalized world can any longer claim to provide meaning. As people look to old models like nationalism, religion and ethnicity to help them forge an identity, Laidi questions their effectiveness and certainty in a globalized world in a permanent state of flux. Our current inability to make sense of the world reveals an end to a way of thought dating back to the Enlightenment.
Customer Reviews:
A useful book for thinking about the post-Cold War world.......1999-10-06
Zaki Laidi's book provides a very useful way for thinking about the structure (or lack of it) of the post-Cold War international system. The author takes a postmodern approach, arguing that the end of the Cold War brought about not only the end of communism, but the end of the Enlightenment project of the last two centuries as well (of which, of course, Marxism was a component). This argument, certainly a sobering counter to American triumphalism, is echoed in the last writings of Murakami Yasusuke (An Anticlassical Political Economic Analysis, 1992 and 1996). That the argument comes in two very different forms from scholars outside of American academia is equally significant. Laidi argues that the international system today has no meaning, or rather what we might call an overarching structure of meaning. Those states (Europe and the United States) that previously provided such meaning no longer can; neither can Japan because it has no universalist principles upon which to create a meaning other states can adhere to. Therefore, there is no end (telos) around which to organize identities and power. What we have are "multiple and emerging meanings," for example, regionalization of meaning centered around Europe or "Asia" but which has no broader goal. Students of international politics will find the work especially interesting. Scholars of hegemonic stability are likely to consider that Laidi's argument has already been made in different (i.e. not postmodern) language, but the author's focus on intangibles like "meaning" provides insight not often seen in studies focused on political and economic structures and processes. Indeed, the turn in international relations theory toward constructivism gives Laidi's work additional significance.

eBay Quick Steps
A book review by Frank Dobrowolski
May 12, 2005
by Carole Matthews & John Cronan
Published by McGraw-Hill/Osborne
ISBN 0-07-225506-4 2004 240 pages
List price: $16.99 On Amazon: $11.55 +S/H
This is a short book, with wide margins and many vivid color illustrations and tables. As a result it is a quick read - per its title. It has a simple, direct approach which works well for eBay beginners and novices. It also contains some information that likely would help advanced users.
I like the illustrated, annotated Walk through of an eBay Transaction
1. Prospective seller registers to sell an item on eBay
2. Takes photos of object to sell and writes a description of it
3. Enters the description, photos, payment terms, shipping information, and other supporting material into eBay's auction selling form
4. Track the item as buyers start bidding on it
5. The buyer registers to participate in the auction
6. Buyer finds the item and bids on it
7. Buyer wins the auction and connects with seller to verify the details and the buyer pays the seller
8. Seller sends the package per the shipping terms specified
9. Buyer receives the item
10. Buyer and Seller provide feedback about each other in this transaction.
The Find Your Way around eBay chapter begins with a page-filling illustration that is typical of this book. The eBay home page is shown and eight areas are picked with a comment on each. The chapter continues with more large figures and sidebar "Tips" and "notes".
One page is filled with a table that lists the type of auction, gives a description and notes requirements. For example:
* Auction - Buy It Now [Fixed Price]
* Description - Offers the item for a given price and there is no auction
* Requirement - Seller must have a feedback rating of at least 30 and be a registered user for at least 14 days of be ID Verified.
The guidance on ID Verified contains 11 steps and one figure, one Note and one Tip.
The following chapters are similarly presented in easy to follow text with numerous colorful illustration, tables and sidebars. Chapter 9 presents information I have not seen this in other books on eBay and it is done well here. The Chapter
has sections entitled
* Detect and Report Account theft
* Use Buyer Fraud-Protection Measures
* File a Fraud Alert
* Set up a Bidder Alert
* Block Bidders or Buyers
* Report Unwelcome Buyers
* Use Additional Resources
a. Security Center
b. Law Enforcement & Other Resources
This may be the best book on eBay I have seen for beginners and novices in using eBay. Advanced users probably would find some information that they could use.

Customer Reviews:
step by step guide for newcomers to eBay.......2005-09-11
This is the latest in the successful QuickSteps series from McGraw Hill. The authors strive to show how eBay can be very easy to sell items on. And certainly the emphasis is on selling, not buying. When you hear of people having a livelihood on eBay, invariably it centres around selling.
The book is lavishly illustrated, with heavily annotated screenshots from eBay's pages, to show you the key steps in selling. The first few times can indeed be awkward. Many complications, like do you already have a PayPal account, to accept payments in? Strictly, you don't need this. But many buyers like to pay this way, and having it can enhance your sales.
The book also shows how good pictures of your items can boost the number of bids and the eventual winning price. Again, none of this is difficult, if you know what to do, and methodically go through it, step by step.
