Book Description
To make your point, you need that one perfect statistic about government spending. Where do you find it? As anyone who has examined the Budget of the U.S. Government knows, it's not meant to be understood. The Tax Foundation has a solution: A Taxpayer's Guide to Federal Spending.
Unlike the "Citizen Guide" booklet that comes with the Budget and is designed to sell the President's ideas to the public, the Tax Foundation's fully indexed reference book mirrors the actual Budget. Organized by department, agency, program area, and individual expenditure account, it conveys all the essential information in the Budget. Readers will be able to use correct terminology with any government official they write or talk to. Pie charts give snapshots of how each department divides up its budget.
We've boiled the President's Budget down to one tenth its original size, but you won't miss a thing.

Rule number 538: No bioweapons jokes in the cover letter.
Rule number 571: Every sitcom must feature an episode in which the male character is tragically torn between celebrating a romantic milestone and using unexpected basketball tickets.
Rule number 592: One exclamation point per e-mail!
Rule number 597: Disc 2 is the best disc in the box set.
Rule number 600: The wackier a doctor's neckties, the less prestigious the medical school.

Book Description
Derived from Esquire's popular feature, this wildly entertaining, bestselling men's manual to life in the 21st century is revised, expanded, and with color added! It now offers 668 rules in all (91 of them new to this edition), providing even more lighthearted reading, manly musings, and, occasionally, good advice. Accompanied by full-color illustrations throughout, these rules are guaranteed to set a guy straight. Here is what guys need to live by:
Rule number 2: When someone says he is “pumped” about something, it usually means he’s about to do something stupid.
Rule number 36: No matter how hard you practice, you cannot say the phrase, “Yeah, right” without sounding sarcastic.
Rule number 45: For the last time, no goddamn Speedos.
Rule number 108: The road to hell is not paved with good intentions. The road to hell is paved with smooth-jazz CDs, herbal teas, John Tesh specials, and low-fat cheese.
Rule number 154: Properly made, leftover chili gets better and better every day until the fourth day, at which point it begins its slow decline.
Rule number 59: The study of inert gases is best left to professionals.
Rule number 38: When it comes to luggage, men don't pull.

a clever take with some truth and much needed humor.......2006-02-17
I bought this originally off the $1 bargain table as a stocking stuffer but found it so amusing I had to order a copy for myself. Its a tongue-in-cheek take on rules of the man's world with enough truth to strike a chord and provide much needed humor into this complicated topic. Makes a good (and cheap) gift.
Witty.......2003-12-26
There are 517 "rules" that the editors of Esquire have penned to "guide a man's life." The rules range from being poetically true to absolutely absurd(e.g. Rule 384 "The history channel is not a substitute for reading a book every now and then" vs #210 "The best religions have great hats.") Some are funny others are just stupid (e.g. Rule #121 "Gratuitous nazi-bashing never goes out of style" vs Rule 160 "The future has no buttons.") Overall the reader will get a kick out of this book and possibly even learn a thing or two about being a man. My favorite rule was #236 "Big men sail little boats."
Product Description
A step-by-step, self-instruction method. Includes care of the autoharp, playing positions, chord changes, back-up strums, arpeggio strums, melody picking, rhythm picking, and much more! Each song teaches something new and each strum pattern is built on the previous one. When you have practiced each selection and perfected each strum, you will have the necessary foundation to go on to more advanced styles and more intricate picking. The songs in the book are arranged for the 15-chord instrument, since it is the most popular for beginning students. In the 60-minute instructional recording, the author uses autoharp and vocals to demonstrate the major styles presented in the book, from simple to advanced strums to melody picking. The player learns effective ways to practice each new style, and has a chance to play along with the singer on the songs that are repeated, unaccompanied.
Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2007-02-12
As an absolute beginning Autoharp player this is a great book to start with. Many of the songs are old favorites, as this helps as you will know how they are supposed to sound but other songs may be unfamiliar. The different strumming techniques are presented, practiced and then applied to various songs. You can learn to play the songs simply and then apply advanced strums. This book would be an excellent choice to start with and has enough material to built upon to develop your skills.
Just Excellent.......2007-01-11
You can be a true novice and learn to play the autoharp with this book. The descriptions and explainations are clear limiting any frustration. It takes you as far as you want to go.
The Best Since Forever!.......2006-08-17
Meg Peterson is the premier Autoharp teacher in the U.S., and she is the best judge we ever had at the Walnut Valley Festial in Winfield, Kansas. C'mon down sometime! (Bring something to pick, too!) "Thanks, Meg!"

The Bible in American Life -- an Investigation.......2005-07-31
The author reports on and analyzes the way various churches and other Christian settings view the Bible, study it and use it in life. I found very interesting the contrast of four congregations in Colorado Springs. The author attends church Bible classes, worship services and seminary course classes, then interviews various participants or leaders, for a rich, insightful perspective on the role of the Bible in the life of American Christians of various persuasions and backgrounds.
The best book on modern Christianity I've ever read.......2000-09-05
Ann Monroe has written a deeply felt exploration of modern christianity. Told with humor and respect for differing opinions, her account offers a new opportunity to examine an area of life that many have discarded as irrelevant. The Word demonstrates that this is far from the case. -- JM Kass
An excellent survey of the gospel in modern American culture.......2000-07-03
Ann Monroe's The Word explores the words of the gospel in modern American culture, analyzing how the Bible is taught and studied today. Chapters use interviews with renowned biblical scholars to consider the beliefs surrounding the Bible. An excellent survey.

The PBS Companion : A History of Public Television
ASIN: 1859840299 |
Amazon.com
In Made Possible By..., Village Voice columnist James Ledbetter considers the current state of public broadcasting and finds it decidedly lacking. During its early heyday, NET (National Educational Television, a forerunner of PBS) regularly aired innovative and provocative public-affairs shows; soon, however, public-television managers began toning down controversial content in a desperate--and doomed--attempt to secure government funding. When even these efforts failed, public television increasingly turned to corporate sponsors to fill the gap, resulting in a movement away from adventurous programming in favor of politically inoffensive, "safe" shows such as Sesame Street, Masterpiece Theatre, even Ken Burns's The Civil War. Today, Ledbetter writes, corporate influence rules in public broadcasting, much as it does in commercial television. A savage indictment of corporate underwriting and bureaucratic inefficiency, Made Possible By... is also an eloquent defense of public television's possibilities; Ledbetter envisions public broadcasting as a truly democratic arena--and perhaps the only area of American public life not determined by market forces.
Book Description
An engrossing history of public broadcasting, from its initial idealist attempt to reshape the vast wasteland of television, to its current lamentable state - as safe, consistently mediocre and dependent on corporate financing as its commercial counterparts.
Customer Reviews:
terrible writer,, terrible book.......1999-10-25
I hope this guy has a day job.
Interesting, important PBS critique from a left perspective........1998-06-13
James Ledbetter's concerns are those of a man of the left, and his book reveals a sense of betrayal. He shows how PBS and its insiders used an original left constituency in pursuit of political power and financial gain. Dropped once PBS became an established institution were the unions, performers and artists, educators and other nonconformists to whom the promise of a refuge for individualism and dissidence had been made by what turned out to be -- not surprisingly to libertarian critics -- another self-serving government bureaucracy motivated by the aggrandizement of power and wealth. I.F. Stone said "all governments are liars" and Ledbetter seems to include PBS in that judgement. He reveals why some of those who once believed in PBS no longer are able to offer it unconditional support. While non-leftists may not share his vision of a subsidized agitprop network to replace the present system, many of his criticisms of existing problems within PBS are on the mark.

Customer Reviews:
Would be good toilet paper, but the pages are too stiff.......2006-06-17
This book is used as the text book for my college course. The examples are ridiculous, the exercises are nuts, and the definitions are strange. "This book is not intended to be read in sequence, from beginning to end." (from the book's introduction) Maybe the book isn't meant to be read at all. There is better information from O'Reilly and Cisco. Search for "firewall" on O'Reilly's site and you'll get better information than whats in this book and you'll save $75. Get "The Best Damn Firewall Book Period" instead of this, Amazon sells it for $37 and it gets 4 stars.
Students and newbies beware!.......2006-04-20
If I could put negative stars for this book I would.I am reading this book as a requirement for a network security course. This book by far has to be the most poorly written misleading book I've ever read. In the first chapter there is technically wrong information: The OSI reference model has a wrong layer numbered. I am surprised that colleges even bother to use it as a study guide\text book. The end of chapter questions are very misleading.
Major Disappointment.......2005-01-15
This book was required for a Computer Forensics related class. There are many errors, not just typographical, but in concepts and technical information. At times it is filled with a mind-numbing number of details, much of which will be obsolete by the time you read this. In other areas it skips over important concepts leaving you lost.
If you're hoping to learn more about network security you're better off looking elsewhere.
Don't waste your $$$.......2004-07-19
After browsing it twice, I finally put it down.
It's very introductive, simple and not well-written to a newbie.
It doesn't cover that much on Checkpoint...
The rest you can get it from the Internet.

Submarines handle awkwardly on the surface of the sea; airplanes are cumbersome when taxiing. Both modes of operation, however, are design requirements. Organizational computer networks have a similar requirement: they have to interface with other networks (thereby forming the Internet) in order to be useful. How network engineers manage their networks' perimeters has a lot to do with their usefulness, cost effectiveness, and--perhaps above all--security. Inside Network Perimeter Security concerns itself with this latter aspect of the connection to the outside world. It's carefully researched, cleverly written, and full of references to recent exploits and, more importantly, the trends they represent. The best details on emerging hack attacks will always be found online. This book takes a longer view, evaluating offensive and defensive technologies and offering well-reasoned advice on how to keep a network secure now and in the future.
Readers familiar with the previous work of the authors--particularly the highly respected Stephen Northcutt--will recognize the style here. It doesn't aim to teach you how to do much in particular--there are a few procedures, and some Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command listings--but rather tries to show how to think about networks and the data that comes from them. In a typical section, the authors analyze a log from Tiny Personal Firewall. They highlight the facts that are present in the log and the inferences that can be made from them. A similar style helps you master software tools and make network design decisions. This book is perfect for a network engineer wanting to improve his or her security skills for both design and administration purposes. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to design networks' borders for maximum security, and how to monitor them for unauthorized activity. After an introduction to firewalls, packet filtering, and access lists, the authors explain how to set up routers, special-purpose firewalls, and general-purpose hosts with security in mind. A large section has to do with security-conscious design, both for green field projects and existing networks that need expansion or improvement.
Book Description
The most practical, comprehensive solution to defending your network perimeter. Get expert insight from the industry's leading voices: Stephen Northcutt and the expertise of the SANS team. Inside Network Perimeter Security is a practical guide to designing, deploying, and maintaining network defenses. It discusses perimeter components such as firewalls, VPNs, routers, and intrusion detection systems, and explains how to integrate them into a unified whole to meet real-world business requirements. The book consolidates the experience of seventeen information security professionals working together as a team of writers and reviewers. This is an excellent reference for those interested in examining best practices of perimeter defense and in expanding their knowledge of network security. Because the book was developed in close coordination with the SANS Institute, it is also a valuable supplementary resource for those pursuing the GIAC Certified Firewall Analyst (GCFW) certification.

Great Book on SMB Network Security.......2006-03-13
This is a great book for seasoned IT professionals that want to learn how to secure small and medium sized networks.
As others have said, if you want to read only one book, this is the one. The authors did a great job of describing concepts and relevant low level details and tools.
I enjoyed reading most of it, but I skimmed parts that described processes that seasoned engineers have applied countless times.
Highly recommended!
Excellent.......2005-09-10
Very, very good.
All the most important subjects of perimeter security, remote access, resources separation are addressed.
TCP protocol details are clearly part of the explanation, therefore the more you know of it the better it is.
Useful links and vendor specific technology references are also included, like Microsoft, Cisco and so on.
Excellent.
A very informative read.......2005-01-27
Stephen Northcutt, and the various contributing authors, have created a masterful and well rounded guide of the various considerations that go into securing the network perimeter. As a student of Information Technology this book has been instrumental in my education and has earned a permanent place on my bookshelf (when it is not in my hands directly).
If you want to buy just one book, buy this one........2005-01-24
Stephen Northcutt has done a great job! this is the most comphrensive book on the subject. I particularly found the part on access lists very helpful. Niloufer Tamboly, CISSP
Fairly decent but can be thinned out a bit.......2004-03-02
Fairly decent overview of perimeter security. If your a security professional you may learn a thing or two, if your a network administrator and your idea of security is a firewall then this book is meant for you. Its a fairly easy read, but some of the examples of the commands to enter in configuring routers and hosts could be eliminated. I felt the author was just taking up space with these examples. (not a big deal but I'm taking a star away on principal) I also felt the author could have gone into a little be more detail in the VPN chapter, especially when dealing with encryption, PKI, and authenication which I felt was glossed over. (again not a big deal, but when you call yourself the definitive guide, be more definitive and save the 'commands' for the user guides")
