Down to earth.......2001-07-14

Kind of like a Jack Kerouac book, not a truly formatted type of book, but easy to read, and lots of short stories that provide a look at his life in general. You feel like he is just a friend or something telling a group of stories that mean a lot to his life. I recomend this book to people interested in a more real look at life. It is great to see a more average type of guy write a book, instead of a professional author, good read for any creative writers or anyone in or entering a kind of dry profession.

A quick read for those in the patent field........2003-11-29

This book will be a quick read for those in the patent field. After one or two sittings, you'll discover that you've effortlessly reached page one hundred. Although the author does not reveal his credentials or experience, it is clear that he does have some writing experience, as the journey through the pages is a smooth one. The book focuses on details, but also frequently steps back to show you the big picture. For example, there is periodic commentary on the many telegraphic and telephonic machines produced by other inventors around the world, at the time of Bell. Although the footnotes to the first chapter are not inspiring (they include an encyclopedia; scholars would never cite a watered-down tertiary source like an encyclopedia), the sources cited for later chapters are better, e.g., legal depositions. If there could be any improvement in the book, it would be to include step-by-step instructions on how to assemble one or two of the early devices described in the text, e.g., the acidic water device shown on page 96. The author acknowledges Stephen Mican as a helper. Mr. Mican is an experienced patent attorney, having worked on about 40 patents for companies in Milwaukee, Rockford, Chicago, and Rockville, MD, and for the U.S. Navy. Mr. Mican is also an inventor, being listed as the sole inventor of U.S. Pat. No. 5,315,393. One wonders if the book would have been substantially different if it had been written by a historian or by a patent attorney. Readers familiar with patent law will find this book to be filled with intrigue and insights into the history of the USPTO, but other people would probably rather be doing other things with their time.

Technology History Revisited.......2001-12-05

To appreciate the history of technological invention it's important to understand society and the scientific community at the time the inventors lived, as well as the political and industrial forces.

The Telephone Patent Conspiracy of 1876 is a good introduction to understanding science and society at the time Thomas Alva Edison, Alexander Graham Bell and a lot of their contemporary inventors, engineers and scientists changed the world by introducing electric lighting and telecommunicatins to the homes and offices.

The book may appear somewhat biased against Bell and focus mainly on the battle between Bell and Gray. People like Emile Berliner and Edison get only cursory treatment, and Antonio meucci is hardly mentioned. At times the author treats information from newspaper clippings with the same authority as official records. Readers are adviced to check the footnotes.

Still, the book is recommended reading for anyone interested in the history of technology.

All time great book.......2003-12-03

First published 1984, then with a few extra chapters. This was on publication essential reading and remains so. It combines a good account of hip Hop's formation and antecedents with a look at the contemporary scene..labels, artists and crews. It is particularly good for tracing themes within the culture and cross referencing them to earlier music. Well written, suitable for all ages with classic photos, every Hip Hop fan should own this.

A book without equals.......2000-07-08

This is a serious, thorough, warmly written book about a musical genre that until very recently was given short shrift by most music critics. Toop dived head-first into the subject and immersed himself in the history, culture and mythology of hip-hop. His enthusiasm is infectious. One of the best books about music I've read.

This book doesn't talk much about how to save money for your wedding. It has a few good tips and ideas but nothing for low-budget weddings. It's more of a wedding planner, much like every other wedding book on the shelves. I'm glad I got it from the library rather than pay $14.95 for a useless book.

Great if you're a programmer.......2007-02-07

If you're trying to learn Lotus Notes, don't bother with this book. Especially if you're a new administrator and you just want to manage databases. I didn't find it very useful at all and had to purchase other books to get what I really needed. I find the Lotus Help feature gives you better information than this did.

All that you want.......2003-09-22

If you are serious about Domino, its a good guide, even if you know R5 or if you are a rookie. (but it's really heavy..you will hate it if you usually travel whit it.)

Doesn't cover the new Functions and Commands.......2003-05-16

I was looking for an update book that would cover the new @Functions and @Commands in the programming language. I saw them listed in the first chapter, browsed through the other chapters and saw the real-world code examples and purchased the book. I was very disappointed to see only R5 code in the bulk of the book, even when new @functions in R6 could have been used to simplify. This is just a rushed rehash of the R5 text with new screenshots of R6 Designer client. I should have saved my money and gone with the IBM Redbook and the Lotus help documentation.

Beginners only..........2003-04-15

This book follows the same formula as predecessors in the most part except for the "real world code" sections. It is very similar to the equivalent ibm red book. Domino is a well seated technology and so you will probably skip right past the first 300 pages about whats a form, a view, a page and a frameset. You could work all this out yourself if you have a designer client infront of you. It takes you through all the elements that any other domino book written about R5 does as well. Then towards the end you get some javascript and HTML basics. But nothing on CSS, (which for anyone who has built a web page after 1999 is now the formatting technique for any dynamic site). If you really have no idea what you are doing and dont have any other supporting literature then this book would help.

But for those of us who are well versed in domino you can find all this on the internet anyway through LDD (aka Notes.net) and download the PDF's, you could even get a (...) R5 book and work out the rest. Dont forget there is an extensive online help system.

Steve and Debbie come through again!.......2003-04-11

The wait for this new release was worth it! The new features of Notes and Domino 6 are presented with precise and detailed information without killing the reader with a lot of technical jargon. The sections focused on DECS and DCRs were most helpful! While other publications have only glossed over this highly valuable feature set, Debbie and Steve take the necessary time to walk the reader through the process of programming and using these new features. Thank you! Out of all the books I have for Domino 6 Development, I continue to find that I turn to this one for all the answers.
