Book Description

A practical, easy to read, easy to understand guide for anyone with an insurance claim to gather the necessary information, place a value on the claim and present the information to an insurance company representative in a compelling and convincing way. The book explains why, in most cases, a lawyer is not needed to collect insurance money. Included are discussions of bodily injuries, damage to cars, what information is needed to convince an insurance adjuster of the value of the claim and methods of negotiating for the best recovery possible. The best part is that people following these methods then get to keep all the money for themselves instead of sharing up to one-half of it with a lawyer. The book even covers relationships with lawyers, if one has already been hired.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars There is better information in other places.......2004-09-22

I found the book incomplete for my purpose. I had bought several books about this to SETTLE MY OWN CLAIM. There was not as much information on property damage or what to do when you have a CAR ACCIDENT.

I had more valuable information from the Car Accident Secrets book. I was able to settle my claim easily by following the steps right out of that book. It was also less expensive !! The website for Caraccidentsecrets.com is (http://www.caraccidentsecrets.com) It had a lot more valuable information which helped me a lot more. I used the book on that site to help me settle my claim without a lawyer. It also teaches you more do's and don'ts and also has REAL examples of claim settlements. The book also gives you FORMS and simple steps to follow. I would recommend that one instead plus its a lot cheaper.

5 out of 5 stars Help Has Finally Arrived!.......2001-06-06

After much difficulty, I finally feel prepared and secure about handling my insurance claim. The book provided detailed information about my responsibilities and about all materials I need in order to negotiate and settle my claim. The book is easy to read and the author makes you feel as though he is sitting there talking to you. I recommend this book to anyone who is presently involved in a claim or anyone who carries insurance and may one day be involved in an accident.

2 out of 5 stars Not enough info. on injury claims........2001-06-03

Mr. Smith gives good information on how to negotiate for the best car claim, but he is very misleading on how to settle a personal injury claim. He also is very biased for the insurance industry and only tries to steer you toward a small claim. If you want to know about a personal injury claim, this book in't for you.

2 out of 5 stars Claims How To Collect Insurance Money Without A Lawyer.......2001-02-05

Good if you need a "cheerleader". There are no forms or checklists to help you with your task so you are still on your own. Wording the claim letter is the big task and this book provides no help.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I'd Read it Sooner.......2000-01-03

I just finished reading 'Claims, How to Collect Insurance Money Without a Lawyer' and wish I had read it sooner. I am a single parent school teacher and a couple of years ago one of my sons was involved in an accident that was totally the other driver's fault. I relied completely on my insurance salesman to advise us on what was fair, just and due my son. Now, after having read this book I discover that we settled considerably short. Both physical recovery and financial recovery were challenging for my son, and I know now it should not have been quite so difficult.

Actually, the greater value of this book to me is that it serves as a wonderful primer for understanding my own insurance. I had no idea how truly uneducated I have been. At this time I am not involved in any insurance claim nor litigation, but should I be involved in an accident, I will certainly have a strong foundation in understanding what I should do and in the terminology being used. Also, the next time I renew my policy I will do so with a great deal more intelligence.

The book is a fast read and is organized in such a way as to make returning to look up any particular topic quite easy. As soon as I finish typing this review I plan to call some friends of mine to recommend the book to them.

                    Product Description

Using an eclectic style based on the popular teaching methods of Zoltan Kodaly, Carl Orff, and Emile Jaques-Dalcroze, this text explores the six essential components of the elementary classroom music program: singing, playing instruments, moving, listening, reading, and creating music. A review of music fundamentals necessary for teaching begins the text, evolving to later apply them to the development of music skills for K-6 teaching. The book concludes with lesson outlines intended for peer teaching in the college classroom or field experiences in elementary schools. The lessons reflect the National Standards in Music K-6.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A must read for everyone!.......1999-07-14

Mr. Smiley receives two thumbs up, two snaps, one exaggerated smile (all teeth included), a complete roll of the eyes, and a full Sista girl neck rotation. Tavis did not talk off the "cuff" but had back-up for his commentaries. It is great to know someone is letting actions speak louder than words. Tavis, Keep on! Keeping on!

                        4 out of 5 stars Great.......1998-07-28

If you're a Tom Joyner Morning Show listerner, you will be quite familiar with this one. It is an easy read since it refreshes your memory of Tavis' commentaries and those well known campaigns; like saving Living Single & New York Undercover, Texaco's boardroom racism, Christie's planned auction of slave "memorabilia?" and bringing hate crime cases to light. As I read it I could hear and feel the voice and emotion of the original spoken words. I really liked it and read it in just one day.

5 out of 5 stars MORE MORE MORE!.......1998-04-20

If you catch Tavis Smiley on BET here's your chance to read what millions of radio listeners get to hear each week. As the cover and text designer for this title, I had a coveted front row seat for Mr.Smiley's "AIR" show. This book is a welcome insite into the author's advocacy (a planned- then aborted auction of slave memorabilia at Christies in New York), opinions and reflections on a variety of subjects from voter registration to Tiger Woods. He's at his candid, passionate, verbose and articulate best.

Too bad we in the central NY/NJ area don't get the Tom Joyner Morning Show! Every radio within range would surely be tuned in for the fun and commentary. I look for it on the dial whenever I'm out of town. So why didn't I give it a 10? I wanted more!

The Best to Tavis, Tom, and Denise!

                          Book Description

Tavis Smiley brings us a collector's edition of his thought-provoking and action-guided commentaries as heard by millions on The Tom Joyner Morning Show. Included are memorable on-air campaigns—which have changed how companies do business with African Americans. These campaigns involve:

                          • CompUSA: Tavis and Tom compiled a list of companies—the first target being CompUSA—that get millions of dollars from Black customers to pressure them to buy more ads in the Black media.

                          • Hate Crimes: After the brutal slayings of James Byrd, Jr. and Matthew Shepard, Tavis asked Tom's listeners to support the passage of the Hate Crimes Protection Act of 1998, which eventually became law—the first such revision to hate-crime law since Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s assassination.

                          • Rosa Parks: Tavis led a six-week campaign to get Congress to award Parks the Congressional Gold Medal, which she received from President Clinton in 1999.

                          • Princeville, North Carolina (the oldest Black township in America): Tavis helped Princeville get a $1.5 million appropriation from the government in 2000 to help this community rebuild after the devastation of Hurricane Floyd.

                          • Black Shows on Network Television: Tavis launched campaigns to urge Fox TV to return Living Single to its line-up; and was instrumental in seeing that City of Angels wasn't pulled from CBS's schedule in 2000.

Regarded by many as "the voice of Black America," Smiley's commentaries spark dialogue and debate.

                          Book Description

Genre and Television proposes a new understanding of television genres as cultural categories, offering a set of in-depth historical and critical examinations to explore five key aspects of television genre: history, industry, audience, text, and genre mixing. Drawing on well-known television programs from dragnet to The Simpsons, this book provides a new model of genre historiography and illustrates how genres are at work within nearly every facet of television-from policy decisions to production techniques to audience practices. Ultimately, the book argues that through analyzing how television genre operates as a cultural practice, we can better comprehend how television actively shapes our social world.

"Genre and Television" by Jason Mittell is a scholarly but accessable study of television and American culture. Mr. Mittel demonstrates how genres function as cultural categories by stressing the interplay of historical processes, industrial practices, audience discources, text, genre mixing and parody. Interestingly, Mr. Mittel draws on the work of Michel Foucault to discuss how genres are crucial in developing and maintaining audience discourses where definitions, interpretations and evaluations may be challenged and revised over time. Mr. Mittell's mix of interesting and entertaining case studies combined with sophisticated analyses makes for fascinating reading and will no doubt prove to be a highly influential work within the media studies field.

Mr. Mittell presents a historiography of the quiz show to demonstrate how public policy decisions can shape genres. The radio origins of the quiz show provided a model of how the genre would be presented on television in the mid-1950s, with expectations of monetary awards, honest competition, a question and answer format, educational content and positive social value. As the reality of lotteries and scripting were discovered, the FCC strong-armed the industry into producing shows that conformed to what it perceived to be the mass audience' preferences and expectations.

Cartoons are discussed to illustrate the lasting impact that industrial practices can exert on genres. We learn how cartoons produced by Hollywood film studios for general theater audiences were re-broadcast on television for consumption by children in the Saturday morning timeslot. The short-lived success of Hanna-Barbera's primetime productions such as the 1960s series "The Flintstones" reinforced a growing consensus that cartoons could not be successfully targeted to adults, a view that persisted for decades. However, the author heaps generous praise on Cartoon Network and the cable industry with reinvigorating the genre by successfully cultivating a mass audience of cartoon lovers through the use of shrewd branding characterized by irony, nostalgia and art.

The oft-maligned talk show genre was the subject of a survey conducted by the author that attempted to elicit how audience discourses of taste and identity are shaped beyond the viewing experience. Although the survey sample was much too small to be validated scientifically, the answers to the open-ended questions confirmed the author's contention that the "cultural circulation" of genres is important, as viewers and non-viewers frequently reported that they evaluate talk show genres and sub-genres in discussions held with others away from the television set.

The importance of reading texts in their historical and social context is illustrated by the 1950s classic "Dragnet", whose suggested authenticity combined with innovative production techniques heavily influenced the police show genre. However, the dualistic worldview of "Dragnet" was disastrously revived in 1967 to changing cultural values that reduced the ideologically-rigid program to self-parody. The author explains how the more successful precedents that were filmed in the 1970s such as "Starsky & Hutch" recalled some of the production values of "Dragnet" but increasingly celebrated the "rogue hero" who could navigate the ambiguous moral ground that might exist between the extremes of criminal chaos and a repressive state bureaucracy.

Mr. Mittell contends that genre mixing and parody are often employed to heighten cultural assumptions about genre. Parodies such as the 1970s TV series "Soap" successfully mixed daytime dramas with comedy but confounded audience expectations about each of these genres, which explains why the program was so contentious at the time. Likewise, "The Simpsons'" blending of cartoon comedy with family sitcom has stirred controversy over the appropriateness of adult-oriented content in a format that has been traditionally associated with young children.

I highly recommend this extraordinary book to demanding readers who may be interested in an uniquely intelligent analysis of television and American culture.

The Palm OS, the functional core of the Palm series of handheld computers from 3Com and the Visor series from Handspring, is easy to learn and fun to use. With its simple elegance and range of available software, it's great for people who need to keep track of details and don't want to use a big laptop computer all the time. In Palm for Dummies, Bill Dyszel shows you how to use the operating system and the suite of applications that ship with it on 3Com and Handspring platforms. For the most part, this book is straight documentation of the Palm OS environment, with explanations of what it can do and procedures that detail processes for you.

This an approach is better suited to a ponderous productivity application, or a business-oriented operating system. The author should do more in this book to introduce the reader to the fun of Palm OS computing. He should share more opinions on favorite aftermarket software, too. Also, the forced casual tone of the Dummies series--this book includes a chapter called "Ten (Or So) Troubleshooting Tips"--is beginning to show its age. The tone that seemed friendly when it was a novelty, now, more frequently than not, seems sloppy. Readers don't want to be bored, and dry presentations of unadorned facts certainly are no fun. But a book about a computing environment as vibrant as the Palm OS, with its colorful communities of users and developers, shouldn't have to rely on dumb jokes and cutesy lines to engage the reader. This isn't Dyszel's fault, as he wrote in the Dummies series's standard style. But David Pogue's PalmPilot: The Ultimate Guide is a better book, despite being somewhat dated. --David Wall

Topics covered: The Palm OS operating system for handheld computers, including Palms and Visors. Specifically, coverage touches on the Graffiti handwriting-recognition system, applications (those that come with the operating system) for managing appointments and contacts, and connectivity via the HotSync cradle and modem hardware. Wireless operations with the Palm VII get attention, and there's a directory of aftermarket software that's organized by profession.

Bill obviously knows the ins and outs of the Palm OS through and through and it really shows in this book. Extremely well written and does a great job of highlighting some of the strong points of the Palm OS. I especially found this book to be one of the funniest, if not THE funniest, of all the Dummies books I've read. Also having also purchased two other Palm OS books at the same time I bought this one, I can tell you this book is easily the best of the three. If you want a little more than the meat and potatoes the other Palm OS books out there offer then pick this book up. You'll be extremely glad you did, trust me! Outstanding.

This is yet another winner in the For-Dummies series. I am often amazed at the series in the amount of in-depth knowledge that is presented in a friendly manner.

My Handspring Visor Prism came with a very simple and small introduction booklet. The online PDF file was a little more help. It wasn't until I got the Dummies book that I learned a lot of neat tricks and things I never knew.

There are chapters on wireless, which is helpful information for those that might consider that avenue in the future. If you have a Handspring, you might consider the "Handspring Visor for Dummies". I would probably get "Palm for Dummies" instead.
