From the supplier: The Arizona Department of Insurance is investigating insurance companies for possible discriminatory practices in homeowners' insurance underwriting. The department has received an increased number of consumer complaints about the use of credit reports. Also, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners has highlighted the problem of insurance discrimination in urban areas. However, some insurance companies claim that consumers with poor credit histories have a greater risk of insurance losses.

From the supplier: The New York State legislature is debating the merits of two bills to extend a New York Property Insurance Underwriting Association (NYPIUA) program to assist coastal homeowners with attaining insurance coverage. The first bill, proposed by Rep Pete Grannis, simply extends NYPIUA coverages while the Senate bill gives NYPIUA the ability to begin writing full-fledged homeowner policies.

From the supplier: Several Prudential agents claim that a change in Prudential Property & Casualty Group's underwriting criteria for homeowners insurance in New Jersey amounts to redlining. The agents, who are affiliated with the United Food and Commercial Workers International union, claim that Prudential's decision to start requiring preapprovals for homes within 300 ft of a place of business results from the company's desire to avoid insuring inner-city homes. Prudential denies the charge, and the state Banking and Insurance Dept agrees with the company.

Book Description
This text provides graduate students of macroeconomics, econometrics, and monetary economics with discussion and practical illustrations of the techniques used in applied macroeconometrics. Until the 1970s, there was consensus regarding both the theoretical foundations and the empirical specification of applied macroeconometric modelling, commonly known as the Cowles Commission approach. This is no longer the case: the Cowles Commission approach broke down in the 1970s, to be replaced by a number of prominent competing methods--the LSE (London School of Economics) approach, the VAR approach, and the intertemporal optimization/Real Business Cycle approach. 'Applied Macroeconometrics' examines the empirical research strategy of these alternatives by interpreting them as attempts to solve the problems observed in the Cowles Commission approach. The different research strategies are illustrated with specific reference to real-world examples, particularly with respect to the monetary transmission mechanism. A common US dataset is used in these examples, thus allowing the reader easy comparisons. The presentation is based on the view that identification, a central concept in econometrics, provides a natural framework in which to discuss the alternative strategies currently dominating research. The first part of the book introduces time-series models and details the importance of their identification. The second part illustrates, chapter by chapter, the alternative approaches, providing detailed applications of each methodology. Data used in the applications are available in a variety of formats from the author's web site, and will be supplemented by exercises for the reader to perform.
Customer Reviews:
An erroneous expression on page 63.......2006-04-25
There is a mistake on page 63, (before equation 2.24): It says: Subtract (A1-I)yt-2 from both sides. This is clearly wrong. The correct phrase should be: Add and subtract in the r.h.s. of (2.23) (A1-I)yt-2, and get equation (2.24), etc.
In my humble opinion, this is not really a textbook. You must first know econometrics, and if you really know it, then you verify your knowledge by this text. If this is the case, then the book helps you see modern approaches in macroeconometrics. If you want to start now learning applied macroeconometrics, Enders or Patterson explain more clearly and analytically.
Nice approach, not so nice delivery.......2002-04-06
First, let me praise Favero's effort. He is absolutely right in his approach, i.e, in emphasizing the comparison of the most important "schools" of macroeconometrics. In general, what you have is a textbook about the Cowles Comissionn approach, another about the LSE approach, another about recursive methods and callibration and etc. As many people just read one or two books about macroeconometrics at grad school, it's obvious that very few know about the diversity of techniques available in the field.
Favero, correctly, points out that rather than trying to obscure the differences within the profession, macroeconometricians should expose them. This choice involves practical problems, though. It's obvious, for example, that the book has to cover a lot of ground. The author, however, opted for writting a relatively thin book. Indeed, the book is almost like the collected notes of a grad student in an advanced course (especially because at many points the presentation is very similar to Greene's). It may be (and I think it is) very informative if you already know the stuff (some illustrative E-views programes throughout the book were especially interesting to me), but you won't learn from it. The huge amount of typos in this first edition (what happened to Oxford University Press quality control?) doesn't help it either.
So, the book doesn't work as a textbook (given its incredibly brief presentation of important topics), but is a nice collection of notes - with a correct approach - that will be very useful for the professional macroeconomist.

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to present the available methodologies for the solution of large-scale macroeconometric models. This work reviews classical solution methods and introduces more recent techniques, such as parallel computing and nonstationary iterative algorithms.
The development of new and more efficient computational techniques has significantly influenced research and practice in macroeconometric modeling. This volume supplies practitioners and researchers with both a general presentation of numerical solution methods and specific discussions about particular problems encountered in the field.
The work is organized into five chapters. Solution techniques for linear and nonlinear systems are reviewed and a graph-theoretical approach to perform this analysis is introduced. A model simulation on parallel computers of large-scale macroeconometric models is also described. Finally, a theoretical framework of rational expectation models is presented.

Book Description
"This volume does exactly what its title says: it acquaints with 'New Trends in Macroeconomics'. More specifically, it contains eleven chapters covering different aspects of modern macroeconomics: short-run fluctuations, long-run growth, monetary economics, international finance, macroeconometrics and complex dynamics. All chapters break new grounds in their area while at the same time remain very accessible. The book contains also an excellent mixture of new techniques, interesting applications and methodological arguments. A valuable reference for both practitioners and researchers, it will also be of great help to graduate students seeking to bring themselves to the frontier of one of the most fascinating fields of economics." Book Description
First published in 1959, Pamela Hansford Johnson’s satire on the life of a writer is a classic comedy of the ego. And anyone who thinks “genius” pays the rent had better think again—Skipton is here to prove that it doesn’t. New Introduction by Ruth Rendell.
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but unremarkable.......2006-05-22
I would really offer this review only 3.5 stars, if such were allowed. I found the authors style quite engaging, and enjoyed the read very much, but the overall content and story were not particularly stellar. I had hoped for something along the lines of Saki (H.H. Munroe) but such was not to be. If there is ever a dearth of literature in my 'to read' pile I shall consider more by this author, but probably not until then...
Solid Satire.......2005-07-18
Daniel Skipton, a British writer of limited talent and possibly even more limited success, pretends to himself and the world that he is a great writer. He is, in fact, a liar, a chiseler, a boor, and a swindler, as his conduct over the week or so covered in this novel demonstrates.
Skipton is ruined in the end, of course. I do think that the novel had been better had any of the major characters been at all sympathetic; as it is, only Lotte, Skipton's landlady's daughter, who knits socks for him and brings his meals to his room is at all appealing.
funny (if you have a sense of humor).......2002-08-13
I'm halfway through this book. It's hilarious. Very
vivid. I've never read anything quite like it. The
fact that grumpy idealogues are denouncing it here is
a sign of how wickedly funny it is. (Grumpy idealogues
are oblivious to funny, but they have a good nose for
wickedness.)
entertaining if very light weight.......1999-03-13
I can understand why this book is not particularly popular; it is certainly not the first book one should read of Johnson. But it does have its moments, and could reasonably compare to humorous genre fiction and light romance. But if you can get into it, it's not so bad, and I for one was not offended by it.
"not a distinguished work".......1998-06-13
As a feminist I found this book troubling. Ms Johnson's humor is unimpressive, and her narrative will prove offensive to most women who believe that males are making women's writing somehow secondary and unimportant. It is very frustrating indeed.

Another great PPM song book.......2007-01-04
I love Peter Paul and Mary. Their albums were always full of wonderful music arrangements and styling. This book has guitar chords and a wide selection of songs from their long music careers together. If you were into PPM or are just hearing their music now, this is a good book for learning and playing their songs.
Treasure trove for musical PPM fans !.......2001-11-04
This PPM Deluxe Anthology contains around 80 songs, many of which are also in the PPM Song Book with its 32 song titles. In fact, in the latter there are only about 5-6 additional songs e.g. don't think twice its alright, when the ship comes in, very last day, the times they are a changing, three ravens.
Many lesser known titles can be found here and it must be a joy to play these song for the genuine PPM folknik!

Book Description
Of the Presence of the Body gathers nine original essays by eminent scholars in the fields of dance and performance studies. Its focus is the historical, cultural and political contexts that inform choreographic and dance practices and critical readings of dance--in other words, how dance operates as critical discourse. The question that runs throughout the essays is the theoretical and political problem of "how dances come to be seen," how the presence of the body leaves its mark on critical theories and performances.
Focusing exclusively on 20th century dance, the interdisciplinary perspectives range from history to race studies, deconstruction, Marxist theory, feminist theory, literary studies and feminist ethnography. The anthology provides an overview of the current methodologies and theoretical developments in the field of dance studies. These essays expand our understanding of the performing body, and their organization around the epistemological problem in dance studies--the dynamics of seeing, remembering and writing--will make the collection useful for classes in dance criticism and theory, cultural theory, performance studies, and aesthetics.

This great book should be a staple in every classroom. It instructs with clarity and insight, and gives real, practical, working knowledge from inside the world of TV and video production. It's conversational style makes ingesting the material a pleasure. You'll easily want to read and re-read it; and no holes will remain in your understanding, as it seems that every question was anticipated and then answered.
Comprehensive and Well-Presented .......2007-03-15
The book is extremely well written and very comprehensive. It provides a great entry-level introduction to the world of TV and Video Production while also managing to deliver thought-provoking and educational perspectives via "interviews" with many long-term practitioners.

Matt Neuberg's REALbasic: The Definitive Guide is a diligent and thorough introductory text for REALbasic 2 on the Macintosh, an object-oriented programming environment based on components and BASIC. Even if you've never programmed before, this title--combined with the power and ease of use of REALbasic--is all you need to start writing your own software for the Mac.
In addition to being a tutorial to the REALbasic tool itself, the author's introduction to object-oriented software is remarkable for its patience while also getting the beginner to think in objects. (Besides an authority on Macintosh programming, Neuberg has a Ph.D. in ancient Greek. This book is probably alone in that it discusses objects while quoting Plato.) There is a full tour of REALbasic program statements, data types, and the nuts and bolts of working with the environment and building basic programs.
The heart of this text covers the various controls and features available in REALbasic. The author discusses simple and advanced user controls (like buttons, edit controls, menus, and list boxes). Neuberg's tour here will let any reader design user interfaces and add event handlers to provide program functionality. Highlights include how to display images and create animation, sound, and video within REALbasic. (Here, the author extends the already strong multimedia support in REALbasic with his own code for a simple video game.) For more experienced users, there are how-tos on using files, databases, and socket programming with TCP/IP and AppleScript.
In all, REALbasic: The Definitive Guide serves its purpose well as a one-volume reference and tutorial to getting the most out of this capable tool, whose functionality certainly rivals any of today's RAD-style programming environments. --Richard Dragan
Topics covered: Overview of the REALbasic environment, BASIC language keywords, constructs and datatypes, arrays, objects, classes and instances, subclasses, events, menus, application architecture, building and debugging, window basics, system events, mouse processing, canvases and graphics, displaying images, basic controls, list boxes, progress bars, sliders, shapes, menus, tab panels, keyboard and mouse processing, files, databases, clipboard, drag-and-drop functionality, sound and MIDI, playing movies, game animations, printing, socket programming, Apple Events and AppleScript, and language extensions with XCMDs and plug-ins.
Book Description
REALbasic is a programming language in the best Macintosh tradition: visual, intuitive, and easy to learn. It allows you to create interfaces in minutes and entire, compiled applications without having to learn a complicated language; the strong object orientation makes it very easy even for beginners to develop, maintain, and alter projects. Best of all, an REALbasic 3, a single button click generates your project as a Mac OS 8/9 application, a Mac OS X native ("Carbon") application, or a Windows executable. No other application framework lets you compile for users on so many platforms so quickly and easily. REALbasic: The Definitive Guide not only gives you a firm grasp of the program's essential concepts, but also tells you things you won't learn from the official documentation alone. If you've never programmed before, the book offers both a primer in REALbasic and an intuitive approach to the concepts of programming itself, as you quickly reach the ability to program every aspect of REALbasic. You start out drawing the interface much as you would do in a drawing program: by selecting buttons, menus, dialog boxes, and the like from a tools menu. Then you use the code editor to fill in the code that tells these pieces what to do. The widely hailed first edition of REALbasic: The Definitive Guide has been completely rewritten to encompass reader suggestions and the many improvements of REALbasic 3--like its ability to compile and run under OS X. The book is divided into three sections:
- Fundamentals: a detailed summary of the language that quickly shows you how to think about programming and accomplish your goals in less time
- User Interface: how to create a complete application using the rich classes and pre-defined tools that make life so much easier for the REALbasic programmer.
- Reaching Out: Internet communications, databases, multimedia, game programming and more!

Definitive for REALbasic 3 but not for REALbasic 2006.......2006-01-24
In its day was the best REALbasic book around. Sure, it was a little bit of a hard read, but it was still the best. But not anymore. Let's hope O'reilly decides to publish a 3rd edition.
Sadly, The Best Book On REALbasic Programming.......2005-12-21
Computer books tend to be outdated rather quickly, sometimes before hitting the shelves. Programming books tend to have a longer shelf life.
When REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition was released over four years ago in 2001, it was current and truly the definitive book on REALbasic. It still is, though that isn't the praise you might think.
The folks at REALsoftware are constantly improving the language and the Definitive Guide was outdated by 2003. Today it is about as relevant as a definitive guide to home theater telling you to use a 21" TV, Quadraphonic stereo with 8 Track tape and turntable and a Sony Betamax.
Today's REALbasic generates programs that work on Windows, Linux and Mac OS9, OS X and soon OS X/86. The technologies incorporate XML, XST, DOM, SOAP and more. The only reference to ANY of these in this book is that you can save your source code as XML and edit it with a standard text editor.
All this said, Mr. Neuburg's REALbasic: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition is still the best and most recommended book for REALbasic which shows you how much of a market there is for new, good books for this great language.
RealBasic -- but dated.......2005-09-07
This is the best reference for REALBasic version 3, as of September 2005. However, you should be aware that REALBasic was at version 5.5.5 as of June, 2005, and REALBasic 2005 was released August of 2005.
Also, REALBasic started out on Macintosh platforms. It has now been ported to Windows -- but that's fairly recent, too. Thus, this book covers mostly Macintosh or generic applications.
O'Reilly seems to have dropped support for this book, too. This means there won't be another revision. However, if you can find it used, and you still want to use REALBasic on Windows, buy it. It's that good, and still useful.
Not the definitive guide.......2004-04-21
I've been using Realbasic for many years. If you are expecting to actually use Realbasic to build practical applications, this book will not be of use to you. As others have stated, if you are beginner, this book will not be very helpful to you. I've seen some really helpful books for learning and using Java and VB, but unfortunately Realbasic doesn't have the same quality of books out there (nor will it ever, likely). The omissions in this book are glaring, the writing style unnecessarily obtuse. The Realbasic through Applications book and the Realbasic for Dummies books are better, although still not great.
You'll do no better than to simply look through Realbasic code samples freely available on the web, and ask questions on the mailing lists instead of needing to purchase any Realbasic book.
The title of this book says it all.......2003-10-24
If you're already a programmer, particularly if you're coming from a "visual" environment such as VB, Cafe, Flash, etc, this is the only REALbasic book you will need to buy. Matt's book is exactly the solid programming reference you would expect from O'Reilly. This plus Real's own Language Reference and mailing list archives are all the literature an experienced programmer will need.
If you want to start with more basics, consider the Dummies book as a first read. It's just as worthy a book, but the patience Erick takes in the examples will be appreciated by a more novice programmer.
