Book Description
This book synthesizes and extends modern political-economic theory to explain the postwar evolution of macroeconomic policy in developed democracies. The chapters study transfers, debt, and monetary/wage policy-making and outcomes, stressing that participation enhances transfer policy responsiveness to inequality and vice versa, that policy-making veto actors retard fiscal policy adjustments, inducing greater long run debt-responses to all other political-economic stimuli, and that monetary policy's nominal and real effects depend, respectively, on the broader political-economic interest structure and on wage price bargainers' sectorial composition and coordination.

Hilarious and Well Written.......2007-03-09
This little book was painstakingly created and is hilarious. There are about 30 types of men described, each with the perfect photo, and each (surprisingly) different. Each one receives an exclamation of "Oh, yeah! Him!" The analogy to bird watching is made consistently and convincingly and "works" extremely well. Even if the idea for the analogy is not original, this work is a hilarious and expert execution of it.
Insipid, childish and boring.......2000-01-08
An attempt to rip off the old "Preppie Handbook" in style, this silly little book describes "Machoman" vs. "Ths Boggle Brain" (and a whole bunch of other "species") as if they were birds in an attempt at humor. It looks like more effort was made at trying to plug different types of guys into pigeon holes (no pun intended) than at coming up with some real wit. I'll use my old copy to line our hamster cage.
Book Description
Boys are like birds: in the dating world, it can be hard to tell the prized specimens from the bad eggs. But with this handy fully-illustrated field guide, boywatching is about to get easier. After years of intensive study, authors (and intrepid boywatchers) Amy Helmes and Meg Leder give women key facts about the most common species, such as:
- Turkeys are shameless in their pursuit of an intended mate
- Ladies have to dress trendy to bag a Parrot
- Women can flush out Hummingbirds at speed-dating clinics
- Doves won't brag to their friends the morning after a date
- Pigeons are the "Average Joes" of the male world
- It's almost impossible to ignore a Flamingo
- Run away from becoming a Vulture's prey
Both novice and experienced boywatchers will appreciate this definitive survey of men in all their full-feathered glory.

So Funny.......2005-06-27
I got some strange looks while reading this book on the subway, because I was laughing out loud. The writing is so smart and funny. It really rings true. I can think of examples of every bird/boy in the book. I am going to buy a copy of this book for all of my single friends! I love it.
"Boys of a Feather" .......2005-06-16
Girls: If you're like me, "normal" dating guides leave you feeling nauseous. This tongue-in-cheek guide finally treats dating (or "mating") with the levity it deserves. Wonder which bird you're nesting with? Want to seek out your dream bird in his natural habitat? Whether you're dating or in a serious relationship, finding out which bird you're naturally attracted to--or identifying the one you're with--will help you avoid ruffled feathers. After reading "Boys of a Feather," I discovered that I'm continually pursuing a swan but what I really should be after is an eagle. Now when I meet a guy I can't help but try and determine which species of bird he is, which if you think about it, makes the whole process that much more fun. It's kind of like picturing your date in his Calvins. Whether or not you subscribe to Amy and Meg's theory, this book is a hoot.
Boys of a Feather: A field Guide to North American Males.......2005-06-11
This book is a sensational read. Very indepth, very interesting and easy to understand. Amy did a fabulous job on this and I want my copy signed. This is a nationally known writer and reporter for a very distinguished publication and I can see she used all of her learned skills to make this book well worth buying.

This side-splitting book contains everything you need to know about the most common sorts of male humans in North America. Women! Learn to spot each type by simple and reliable indicators such as diet, nest type, foraging technique, plumage, habitat, courtship behavior, and mating calls. Men! There's a 99% chance that you match one of the "species" (remarkably well encapsulated by Ingall's writing) more closely than you'd like to imagine. Some partial excerpts from exemplary entries:
- Patriarchal Yet Nurturing College Professor (Schlumpus intellectus)
-
Plumage: Untidy, overgrown, tufty hair (entices female students who want to "take care of him"). Vintage tweed or corduroy jacket with elbow patches (note: vintage does not mean elegantly antiquated; it means it's been in his closet since 1981 and has too-tight arm holes and Bic stains on the sleeves) . . . Food on shirt. Hush puppies.
-
Habitat: Roams around college campus looking abstracted and forlorn. During mating season, holds regular office hours . . . Eats in undergraduate dining hall to indicate openness to student contact . . .
-
Mating Call: "You write with such clarity, so unfettered by theoretical jargon and obfuscated thinking!"
- Ugly-Shoe Wearing Public Interest Guy (Nebbish virtuus)
-
Plumage: Timex. Battered loafers. Soft-sided briefcase. Tie bought from street vendor for four dollars. Carries the latest Robert Coles or Henry Louis Gates book. Perpetual haunted look.
-
Sexual Display: Takes out personal ads that start "Sensitive Seinfeld look-alike seeks . . ."
- Witty Advertising Exec (Seductus productus)
-
Plumage: Depends on the client. If he is selling sneakers, he dresses like he just stopped by the office on the way to shoot hoops. If he is selling gin, he dresses like a 1930s New Yorker illustration . . .
-
Habitat: . . . spends hours soaking up the culture he needs to understand his job . . . watching MTV to see "what the kids are into" . . .
-
Sexual Display: . . . talking loudly about how his ideas are too breathtakingly radical for the client. Looks around to see if any cute girls have overheard . . .
The illustrations by Ellen Forney are equally effective in capturing the essential details of each "species." (and don't let the goofy cover photo fool you: Forney's cartoons are great!) Highly Recommended.

ha ha i almost peed my pants.......1999-05-02
this is just an all-around great book, it's so funny
adorable and frightfully true.......1998-10-12
i swear, not only is this book hilarious, but you will be able to find an exact description of at least one guy you've dated.
A very amusing look at men.......1998-07-03
This book brought me back to the days when I was dating (thank God I'm married now). I found myself smiling at the descriptions of the various men. It is an excellent piece of work and very creative and amusing to read. I look forward to M. Ingall's other books!
Sexist Trash.......1997-10-07
It's hard to believe that books like this still get written in 1997. Nothing but an unimaginitive play on stereotypes - doesn't the world have enough stereotypes already? Ms. Ingall should know better than this.
hysterically funny, clever and smart as all get-out........1997-04-19
I've been giving this book out like candy to friends, neighbors and colleagues. It's filled with brainy attitude, great observations of life in the nineties, and all under the ersatz rubrick of a field guide, complete with over-the-top Latin terms, eating habits, mating calls and habitats. you should pardon the expression, it's a hoot

Customer Reviews:
Review of Schumann on Music.......2007-08-08
This book represents a wonderful cross section of Schumann's writings on his philosophy of music and critiques of specific works. Schumann, in addition to being a talented composer, was a gifted writer whose style will appeal to a wide variety of readers and whose ideas on music and musical style are as applicable today as they were in his time. His early tendency to present his ideas via conversations between the characters of the Davidsbund is extremely entertaining. This book also gives great insight into Robert Schumann the man, the musician/composer, and the philosopher/critic.
Talk about gaining fresh perspectives of the past! .......2006-02-12
It is very difficult for us to see and understand the present as a confluence of a vast array of tributaries from the past. To us it appears as the single world. It certainly has constituent parts, but we cannot readily apprehend what has been discarded and forgotten or why the things extant were remembered. The past has a flatness to it that only diligent and attentive study can remedy. Unfortunately, in music, we are forgetting almost everything because the current conglomeration of commercial activities we label music has so little in common with what the artists of the past were interested in creating and performing.
If you want evidence for my claim, you simply need to pick up this extremely valuable little book. Henry Pleasants, himself a gifted writer on music, has edited and translated some of the great Robert Schumann's writings on music. Schumann himself is suffering from an unjustified eclipse at present. He was also a wonderfully great composer of music and an insightful writer, popularizer, and critic. With all the lesser music being programmed and performed nowadays, we should get back to Schumann right away before we cheat ourselves of one of our great composers.
What is important about this collection is not what it confirms about our present tastes, or even what Schumann expresses that disagrees with our own views. What is fascinating to me is how many of the subjects he discusses have fallen from our consciousness, from our sense of history, from our artistic traditions.
Just as a few examples. Have you heard any of the John Field piano concertos? I haven't. Yet in 1836, Schumann in the guise of Florestan raves over Field's seventh piano concerto. Now, I am not saying that the Field concertos are good or bad, I have not heard them, but how could they have fallen into such complete eclipse given what is being performed nowadays? What about the concertos of Moscheles, Döhler, and Herz? (Döhler and Herz?!)
There is so much here that it brings the musical scene of Schumann's time (mid-1830s to early 1840s) to life. We get to read contemporary appraisals of works we have retained in the repertoire and works that have fallen into eclipse and others that are so far removed from our conceptions of our musical tradition that one might have to travel to a moon of Saturn to find a copy.
Unless you already have other volumes of Schumann's writings, this book deserves to be in your library. Your music education will be enriched by spending a few hours reading these short articles and thinking about what they mean about our understanding of the past and our sense of musical tradition in our present.

Book Description
Popular claims that new information technology will expand democratic and public spaces are problematic given the exclusive history of the "public" and the restriction of access to computer technology to elites. This book investigates patterns of behavior in a cybercommunity consisting of Americans and Canadians, and discusses the ways in which these so-called public spaces are likely to reshape the boundaries between social insiders and outsiders rather than eliminate them. Traverse analyses the ways in which the norms for participation within cyberspaces often play a role in undermining public tendencies, but notes that new information technologies provide educators, feminists, and other social groups concerned with broadening the inclusive nature of public spaces with unique opportunities. The book's final section explores current efforts by feminists on-line to expand public access for women and suggests further strategies for developing more genuinely inclusive public spaces.

Not Easy To Follow.......2007-08-13
I found the book was difficult to follow. I was looking for a book that would walk me through creating events and setting up forms. Not helpful. I definitely have used more helpful books.
Great Reference.......2007-05-06
I checked out approximately two dozen books about MS Access from my local library system and found this one to be far and away the best of the bunch. Most books were similar to the "dummies" books that we've all come to know over the years. This book, on the other hand, provides in-depth step-by-step instructions for both the basic and more advanced features available in MS Access. Given the need for timeliness in my work, I generally use this as a reference rather than an instructional tool. I've recommended the book to several coworkers and they have found it useful as well.
Good reference for newbie.......2007-04-12
Of the various manuals around the office (some being coworkers children's college texts) - I found this book to be the most helpful getting me started. I am very familiar with MS Word and Excel but never had a need to use Access.
This book covered all the basics about table design, relationships, queries, etc.
So far answers to all the problems I've encountered with Access have been found in this book.
If I could tear it in half I would........2007-02-17
Firstly, I am pretty good with computers, a wize and excel and various other applications and to be honest I never have problems figuring things out, until now. This text lacks any supporting information whatsoever. Firstly, unless you have the exact tables they are using it is a wonder anything happens to work. Secondly, could it use more jargon?
This text would be a great reference tool for someone who is well versed in the program, but not to someone using the program.
Office Access 2003 Review.......2005-06-15
I personally did not like this book. I am pretty new to Access but I am young so I pick these programs up pretty fast. My work involved some advanced query work for data scrubbing. The book goes over every single function but does not go into depth about it. When it described a object (IE: list boxes), i really needed to know how Access stores the data and how i can access it, but the book was no help. I got a feel for the program's functions but could not use this book as a reference when i was coding. I wanted to use this book like i used Excel 2003 Bible, with the detail that I could refer too. Maybe I was looking for too much?

Customer Reviews:
A book about wizzards.......2006-01-26
There is not one useful item in this book. The explantions of functions are obsure and always tell you to use the CD. Basically the entire book is made up for directions on how to use the wizzard functions in access....and why anyone needs step by step for that is beyond me, thats why its a wizzard. Completely useless reference

Just what I wanted. Good comprehensive cover of the basic princples. Thanks
Too Complicated.......2005-09-04
This book is too complicated for someone that just wants to get started with Frontpage.
Little Coverage of New 2003 Features.......2003-12-22
I was dissapointed with this book because it really doesn't document or explain many of the new features in Frontpage 2003 --particularly the database and Windows 2003 Server Sharepoint Services capabilities. The chapter on forms does not explain how to integrate the form with a database, giving the excuse to see a later chapter. The later chapter on databases then states that most database features are out of scope of the book. How about starting with some basic coverage of how to setup Frontpage 2003 to work with sharepoint team services? If you don't do it right, you simply get an error message from Frontpage stating that these features don't work because one has to have a server. I got the distinct impression that the authors have never really used Frontpage 2003, wrote most of the content based on earlier versions of Frontpage, and relied too much on Microsoft's skimpy Frontpage 2003 documentation for the new features.
