Keith Harmon's GREAT AMERICAN HOT RODS: A FULL THROTTLE CHRONICLE OF CUSTOM CARS FROM THE STREET, SHOW, AND STRIP packs over seven hundred pages with color photos and history covering over three hundred cars from the streets and shows of the nation. Only pre-1949 cars are featured here; but that still makes for plenty of pages of detail and a narrowed focus which will appeal to hot rodders of both 'hardcore' and traditional rods. Chapters present both amateur and professional works, rebuilt and original rods, and histories which include color sidebars of at-a-glance information on make, year, body style, engine, and builder. Color shots of each rod accompany the histories.

I buy many hot rod related books. I enjoy reading and admiring the different styles of cars that folks build.
This book covers many styles of hot rods. Some are from day's gone by that have become icons in the hot rod world while other's are just simple car's built for enjoyment. Combining the well known car's of history with those of modern day time is something i havn't seen much of and i feel adds to the book. Your seeing many car's for the first time.
It's hard to beat a hard cover book of this size, that covers so many different car's.

Buy the book, with so many great hot rods to see i doubt you'll be disapointed!

From attending the regional semifinals of "America's Most Beautiful Baby Contest" to getting a job at a fast-food restaurant with the sole goal of getting himself fired in three hours or less, Leon exposes the day-to-day ridiculousness of the American Way. This book drags the highs and lows of contemporary American existence into the light for public scrutiny.

3 out of 5 stars The Premise is the Punch Line.......2005-10-27

I was a big fan of Might magazine, where Leon used to work, and I was looking forward to his first book. While I like the idea of Leon's self-described "infiltration journalism", in which he dons various personas and costumes and weasels his way into various places and subcultures in order to check them out, I would have liked it a little better if he didn't enter each situation with such hostile intent. Leon's shtick has been described as a combination of Michael Moore, Tom Green, Candid Camera, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, Punk'd, which is a pretty accurate -- he's not exactly subtle. And like a lot of these guys (and they are all guys), his ability to follow through with the totally outrageous behavior and ground rules he mandates for himself is definitely admirable on some level. However, where this book falters is in the actual writing -- for the most part, it's just not that good.

Basically, once you know the premise of each piece, that's probably enough to set you laughing (or not). Leon's subsequent choppy description of what happens doesn't generally add much to the enjoyment -- the premise is usually its own punch line. The experiences are arranged into categories like birth, work, home, sex, consumerism, etc. with one to five entries each for a total of 22 pieces. Those few I would recommend were the ones were he: gets hired and tries to get fired from a fast food place, checks out armed forces recruiting, becomes a telephone psychic, becomes a rent-a-clown, becomes a bounty-hunter, and checks into a Scientology hotel and gets recruited. One of the personas he adopts, Dieter Lieterschvantz, is particularly funny with his aggressive pidgin English.

Less funny were the pieces where he: goes gun shopping, competes to get onto various game-shows (expect the part on The Family Feud, that was good), poss as a director at the Cannes Film Festival, wanders around the X-Games as "Aggress-Vert" (a sport he invents) athlete Chas Lemon, checks out apartments for rent, goes used car shopping, tries on women's angora sweaters, and watches a baby contest. In a lot of these he merely comes across as an annoying provocateur, and doesn't really expose anything interesting about American society. And the two pieces in the sex section didn't fit into the rest of the book's framework at all. Unlike the rest of the book, it's just straight experiential reportage -- he goes to get a lap dance and goes up in a plane to have sex with his girlfriend.

On the whole, Leon's adventures are a reasonably enjoyable ride, albeit surface level and not nearly as clever as they might have been. It's kind of like seeing a rapid procession of standup comedians of mixed talent, as opposed to a really good narrative film comedy. The slapdash, hyper-choppy style of prose here might suffice for magazines, but if he's going to build his career around this kind of gimmick, he needs to become a much better writer. One other thing to be aware of, despite the 250 page count, the book is short (I read the whole thing in about two hours). And if you're not sure whether or not this is your cup of tea, do a quick search on the internet -- a number of the pieces in the book are available online. For those who are big fans, he continues his wacky hi-jinks in a more directed manner in his new book: "Republican Like Me: Infiltrating Red-State, White-Ass, and Blue-Suit America".

        5 out of 5 stars An A+! A Hilarious 5 star read.......2005-09-25

This book is an absolute treasure. I can't explain why I have to stop in the middle of sentences and laugh like crazy. I read the story about a fast food job (that the author took and tried to get fired from) for the second time. I tried but could not stop cracking up to the point of tears again. For this reason, this is possibly the funniest book I've ever read. Not one other book has ever made me laugh to tears. If you liked Candid Camera, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, or Dave Chappelle's taxi cab confessions you will like this idea of pretending to be someone else and do some insane things to unsuspecting people. What a funny & intelligent person this writer is - a real gem.

        5 out of 5 stars Hyperventilating.......2003-12-29

I had to stop reading mid-paragraph several times I was laughing so hard. Simpler than Sedaris, but of the same ilk. And to the reviewer, who gave it 2-stars and "finishes every book they start", well, we'll all let that statement be a judgement as to your judgement.

5 out of 5 stars Almost Peed in Pants.......2003-08-20

Harmon Leon infiltrates the worlds of extreme sports, baby beauty pageants, nudists, bounty hunters, and telephone psychics to hysterical ends. Actually, "infiltrates" might be a bit of an overstatement; let's say Leon shows up with, or without, press credentials, to poke fun of a lot of people without their knowledge, for our cowardly, mean-spirited, voyeuristic pleasure. (The Daily Show's Stephen Colbert totally bit your style, man.) It works, every time...

        5 out of 5 stars Ha-Bloody-Ha!.......2003-06-30

Chronicles is loaded with such delightful images, all framed within Leon's brilliant humor prose cadence. I have never laughed out loud so much while reading a book to myself. Even Leon's method of spacing his text weaves a magical comic spell. For example: reporting on his travails at the Eighth Annual America's Most Beautiful Baby Contest in Phoenix, he writes, "I've arrived early. Immediately, through direct eye-interaction from those in the mall, I've already been singled out as a child-abducting pervert. I'm the only one here without a baby. Just a grown man, alone, taking in a beautiful baby contest on a scorching hot Saturday morning, thank you."
A space in the text as Leon ponders this situation.
And then: "You really stand out without a baby. I should've brought one."
Leon has of course been compared with the likes of other infiltrators like Tom Green and Michael Moore, and though he does share similarities with those entertainers, the skill and pace of his storytelling places him in a slightly different field.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best editing of Whitman's Journals.......2006-02-17

Walt Whitman wrote many journals, letters and diaries during his years volunteering at the hospitals in Washington DC. There are many books out there which claim to combine all those elements into one book. This book does an OK job of combining everything. The editor organizes the book by Month, which makes referencing easy. However, the editor chose not to include the original date the piece was written. Whitman dated almost everything, but this editor took those out in favor or numbering in passage in sequence. If you want to know WHEN a passage was written, you will need to find it in another book. In addition, the editor removed the context for each piece. For example, some passages are letters to his mother or an article for the newspapers in New York. Because this information is removed, and because each passage has text removed in order to make each passage short, this book lacks some of the important detials needed to see the big picture of Whitman's life. I am currently studying Whitman during the Civil War, and although I have used this book as reference, I have needed to go to other books to find out when and where each passage was written. This is a good starting point for someone who wants to quickly glance at Whitman's experiences, but I would also recommend Walt Whitman's Civil War, edited by Lowenfals and The Better Angel, by Roy Morris Jr.

Six unmarked graves hold the secret to an older generation's hideous ordeal....

Escaped convicts invade a riverside campsite....

A ring of prestigious businessmen carry out a massive estate swindle in the state capital....

Shipwreck survivors sheltered at a Low Country fishing village have much, much to hide....

And the president of the United States turns to a small-city journalist to intercept a damaging piece of diplomatic correspondence.

Harper, nonconforming and nonpareil crime reporter for the fledgling Challenge, finds himself in the thick of these and other dramas in the post-Reconstruction South. Through intuition, deduction, focused research and on-the-scene investigation, Harper probes to the heart of each affair. In the process, he often uncovers facts and circumstances he can never publish-and enters the hazy borderland between observer and participant.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Isn't Long Enough.......2003-06-14

These days, anthologies tend to either be collections of the year's best something-or-other or compilations of literary short stories intended to elevate and edify. Both have their place in the scheme of things, but I suspect I'm not the only one who misses anthologies that contain just good entertainment.

If that's the case, may I offer for your amusement a slim little volume of tales by journalist Daniel Elton Harmon and featuring an historical counterpart of the author's by the name of Harper. Mr. Harper is a reporter for the fictitious Columbia, S.C., CHALLENGE in the almost-civilized era of the 1880's. The first compilation of his adventures, THE CHALK TOWN TRAIN & OTHER TALES, is billed as volume one of The Harper Chronicles, and those of us who like nothing better than a rollicking good yarn will be waiting impatiently for volume two.

The title story pits Harper against a notorious sociopath, back before such people actually had a diagnosis. "The Chalk Town Train" is a story of corporate injustice, unadulterated evil and justice administered with more than a touch of irony. Indeed, the purveyance of justice is a recurring theme in the eight stories that comprising the book, with our man Harper using his skill and insight to ferret out the truth, sometimes when no one else can.

Mr. Harmon has a superbly deft hand with the short story, and his characters are sharply drawn with a few adept strokes. From first word to last, each of Harper's adventures proceeds without a stumble, and the reader who can stop after reading just one must have a will of iron. His style is crisp and effortless, setting scenes with an economy of language that likely owes much to the author's own career as a journalist.

Indeed, the only real flaw in THE CHALK TOWN TRAIN is that it's over too soon, and before the appetite is satisfied.

        5 out of 5 stars Great stories!.......2001-12-23

Although this is the first book of fiction by Daniel Elton Harmon, it is far from his first published work. He has written more than thirty non-fiction books.

This is a fascinating collection of eight short stories, each featuring his late-nineteenth-century newspaper reporter hero, Harper. They held my interest to the end.

Harmon is a skilled writer, and I look forward to reading more of his work. He is a yarn spinner of the old school, reminiscent of Samuel Clemens or Booth Tarkington, who revels in story telling for the sake of story telling. A modern troubador. He lives in Lexington, South Carolina where he is well known not only for his writing, but also for his music making with his small folk music band, according to the book's introduction.

There are eight short stories in the book, all of which are quickly read and very entertaining. This is a wonderful book to read for your own pleasure, or to give as a gift. I recommend it highly.

Barrett offers you a nice coverage of the most common types of computer networks existing today. The book is written mostly for the electrical engineer or perhaps the computer scientist.

There is a nice, easy start with the basics of wave propagation. Nothing that a physicist would call deep, perhaps. But in EE or CS, and at the level of this book's intended audience, it's a good level of detail. Then, she rapidly goes into Asynchronous Transport Mode, SONET and [of course] TCP/IP. The latter being the Internet. Possibly for most of you, it is the Internet sections that will be of interest. The Internet version 4 is explained. Along with a brief synopsis on the 128 bit version 6.

Barrett also takes you into the higher levels. Of what it means to run a network. And how to defend it against malware attacks. These latter sections of the book are more about software issues. With a warning about social engineering as one attack vector against your users.

5 out of 5 stars What you hear is what . . .?.......2001-08-16

Music exists as it is being heard. Looking more closely at who is hearing the music and how they receive it along with who is delivering the music and for what reasons adds an often neglected, yet vital aspect of music performance and history. Karen Ahlquist's book is a wonderfully readable addition to literature about history and opera; she provides us with a fascinating look at music and people in a specific time and place.

1 out of 5 stars Lacking in true resolutions.......1999-11-30

I was very dissappointed in reading this book. There was more fact and information in the notes then the actual text, I felt the author was giving an over view of the other resource material she had found.

I also found the book very one-sided. Defending the actions of the two key players. As someone who was also an employee of the Monitor Channel during this time, I was amazed at how many inacurate facts there were!

As I finished the book, the only question I had was why did I read it?

1 out of 5 stars poorly written puff piece.......1999-07-23

I am not a Christian Scientist and have no stake in the church arguments over media which Bridges documents.

As I read the book, I was interested in the larger issues Bridges claims she will address: how do events at the CS Monitor reflect the situation of all US journalism?

Sadly, Bridges seems so interested in defending the actions of her colleagues and herself that she doesn't really examine this larger issue.

Also, the writing is terrible. The sentences are poorly constructed, and Bridges uses way too many unnecessary adjectives (perhaps forgetting that adjectives cannot substitute for evidence). By the time I finished, I felt that if she used the word "upshot" ("The upshot was . . .") one more time I would have to run screaming from the room.

The only reason to read this book is to get a glimpse of the primary sources Bridges cites. Read the quotes and the footnotes--I'd skip the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched, very informative piece of literature.......1999-03-15

Susan Bridge provides information about a relatively "cloaked" period in the Christian Science movement, and although her book wasn't intended to inform church members about the happenings as they related to the church itself, it is an excellent vehicle for doing so.The book is a good read for those individuals interested in the area of media and the news, even though it draws some bleak conclusions for positive changes in the future in the way we receive our news. The recent Walters/Lewinsky interview is a chilling example of the direction we might be headed, but it is a must reading for every Christian Scientist who is interested in what took place in Boston from approximately 1984-1992.I think it is well written, well documented, and very interesting. I also felt she was fair in her writing and kept as impartial perspective about the entire situation as possible under the circumstances. She leaves questions to be answered by each reader. Was it a good direction? Was it overly expensive? Would it have been an additional or even a replacement medium for providing the quality of news Mary Baker Eddy desired when she founded the Christian Science Monitor--a newspaper that has not broken even financially for decades? Were individual personalities responsible for the failure? What other factors came into play in this whole scenario that impacted the concepts and their implementation. It certainly will make you think.

2 out of 5 stars "To spread undivided the Science that operates unspent".......1999-01-19

Once again, the Monitor's fundamental intent, as expressed by Mary Baker Eddy, is overlooked and not understood--by the author and Netty Douglass et al.

The object: "To injure no man but bless all mankind," cited repeatedly in MTN, is the corollary, following the fundamental activity and statement made in the omitted first part of the quote from the Monitor's first editorial, where MBE says, speaking of the periodicals she founded: "The next I named 'Monitor,' to spread undivided the Science that operates unspent."

Although the Monitor's mission was never to prosyletize or be a missionary for the C.S. Church institution, it clearly is meant to further the underlying principle, i.e. Christian Science.

It is this blind spot that made the broadcasting project--the way Jack, Netty, et al went about it--destined to fail from the start.

While always putting things in the most positive light for Jack and Netty, from a cursory reading it seems MTN does cover most of the important points.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful, revealing, informative, and readable.......1998-08-25

Bridge's book sheds real light on a fascinating story that only an insider such as she could tell with such authority and understanding. A most useful case-study of a fallen communication enterprise that seemed doomed from the start. This is a book that every broadcast professional and academic should read. Well-documented and thoroughly compelling.

Cross-platform file sharing under Network File System (NFS) is so reliable that in most organizations, it works pretty much unattended. Ditto for the directory services that Network Information System (NIS) provides. Managing NFS and NIS is for people who want to know more about how NFS and NIS do their vital work, and how to make them operate in unusual circumstances. Focused on the Solaris and Linux implementations of NFS and NIS, this book is ideal for the Unix system administrator who's familiar with TCP/IP networking and everyday system administration. The second edition of this book eliminates much of the programming material that appeared in its predecessor and replaces it with information on NFS 3, its support of IPsec and Kerberos security, and its operation under Solaris 8.

This is a blue O'Reilly book, packed to the gunwales with information of interest to people in a hurry to optimize their systems and resolve difficulties. It's easy to locate the passage you need via the index or through the table of contents, and most entries provide a great mix of how-to material (in the form of input-and-output listings) and explanatory text (expert commentary, often with notes on applicable variations). If there's a command, option, or configuration parameter associated with NIS or NFS, you'll find documentation of it here. --David Wall

Topics covered: Network File System (NFS) and Network Information System (NIS) for Unix machines, especially Solaris (through version 8) and Linux (through version 2.2). Auto mounting, security, diskless workstations, and performance tuning are among the many details the authors address.

                  Book Description

A modern computer system that's not part of a network is even more of an anomaly today than it was when we published the first edition of this book in 1991. But however widespread networks have become, managing a network and getting it to perform well can still be a problem. Managing NFS and NIS, in a new edition based on Solaris 8, is a guide to two tools that are absolutely essential to distributed computing environments: the Network Filesystem (NFS) and the Network Information System (formerly called the "yellow pages" or YP). The Network Filesystem, developed by Sun Microsystems, is fundamental to most Unix networks. It lets systems ranging from PCs and Unix workstations to large mainframes access each other's files transparently, and is the standard method for sharing files between different computer systems. As popular as NFS is, it's a "black box" for most users and administrators. Updated for NFS Version 3, Managing NFS and NIS offers detailed access to what's inside, including: NFS isn't really complete without its companion, NIS, a distributed database service for managing the most important administrative files, such as the passwd file and the hosts file. NIS centralizes administration of commonly replicated files, allowing a single change to the database rather than requiring changes on every system on the network. If you are managing a network of Unix systems, or are thinking of setting up a Unix network, you can't afford to overlook this book.

2 out of 5 stars Very Solaris centric.......2005-08-29

I primarly use *BSD and was hoping to learn about NFS/NIS from this book, more than what I had already gleaned from the man pages. However this book is very heavily geared towards the Solaris OS. It does give exlamples of where the filename(s) or folder structures under a different flavor of Unix would be, but exept for these small tables, the rest of the text uses only the Solaris names/folders.

5 out of 5 stars A note from one of the co-authors.......2004-03-03

Hello, My name is Mike Eisler, and I am one of the
co-authors of Managing NFS and NIS, Second Edition.
I'm writing this note to offer additional information
                  to potential readers.

At the time I submitted this note, most of the
customer reviews for this book referred to the first edition.
One of the reviews states that the book is focused on NFS
version 2 over UDP and the old style automounter.
Actually, you'll find the second edition of our book
is more modern. New topics in the second edition
include NFS version 3, NFS over TCP, modern autofs-based
automounters, Kerberos V5 authentication for NFS, NFS Access
Control Lists (ACLs), and client side fail over.

Another difference is that first edition of this book
used SunOS 4.x as a reference for examples. The second
                  edition uses Solaris 8.

The second edition provides information you won't find
in NFS product documentation, such as using tools like ethereal
to debug NFS problems. This book will give you the benefit of
insights from people who probably wrote some of the code for
your clients and servers. You may find (and I hope) that
it will save you the trouble reporting a problem to
                  your vendor's customer support line.

Thank you for considering our book.

5 out of 5 stars NFS, NIS and automounter, a great combonation!.......2002-11-20

Anyone who has ever administered a network of at least 3-4 servers (if not more) will find individually updating accounts, software and such to be a burden. I found myself in this situation not too long ago, and then I picked up this book, and found the answers I was looking for.

Most Unix admins have heard of NFS and NIS but might not have considered using them together. This book gives a very thorough discussion each topic, how to set it up, how to deal with advanced issues, and how to troubleshoot. Admins will really develop an appreciation for how useful these tools can be, especially when used together.

Though LDAP is gaining prominence, a network utilizing NIS, NFS, and automounter is still a very nice network to administer. Even just learning NFS/automounter is time well spent because it is a service not likely to go away. I really felt this this book was worth the time and money because it really helps the intermediate to advanced admin better gain control of the network (instead of the network controlling him :). Definintely give this book a try. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The standard for NFS/NIS.......2001-03-24

O'Reilly puts out so many well written books and the quality of the authors is usually the highest, and this book is no exception. Both of these subjects are covered in more than enough detail for anyone need to setup NFS, NIS, or both. It is written in such a way that you son't have to read straight through, but can use it as a reference for the information you need. I would recommend this book for anyone neededing a decent to thorough understanding of this topic.

                  2 out of 5 stars Fairly Outdated.......2001-01-12

This book is quite outdated. For example, it predates NFS version 3, NFS over TCP (mostly the default these days), or autofs.

If you are a beginner and are looking for fundamental information this book might be useful if you remain aware of its shortcomings. It covers the fundamentals of NFS V2 over UDP, and NIS quite well, and has a good troubleshooting section, which might help beginners negotiate the interoperability and tuning issues that are common in today's multivendor environments. It covers automounting issues quite well, from an "automount" (SunOS 4) perspective.
