My local newspaper has never carried Lynn Johnston's "For Better or For Worse" strip. So I have bought every book she's published and have begun a family tradition of purchasing her desk calendars for my daughter and me for the last several years. Her work is not only enjoyable but warm, touching, and very poignant.

        Book Description

Dee Dee Ramone doesn’t quite know what he’s getting himself into when he and his wife Barbara move into the squalid Chelsea Hotel with their dog Banfield. He spends most of his time trying to score drugs and walking Banfield, with whom he can magically communicate. Meanwhile, he can’t stand his neighbors and shies away from violence, but wishes everyone were six feet under. He also thinks that the room he’s staying in is the very room where his old friend Sid Vicious stabbed Nancy Spungen, and begins having nightmares of Nancy emerging from the bathroom with a knife wound. After one of his nightmares, an evil force enters his hotel room and hurls him against a wall. Dee Dee also gets involved with the transvestite lover of one of his gay fellow addicts. When his wife finds out, the two fight it out and become seriously wounded. During all this, Dee Dee is tormented by the living and dead demons that plague the hotel, along with the ghosts of his old dead punk rock friends Sid Vicious, Johnny Thunders and Stiv Bators. And that’s when the Devil himself decides to join the party…

I noticed the comment by a woman who was simply disgusted and freaked out by this book...was she expecting Stephen King? "The Great American Novel"? C'mon, lady, why'd you buy this wacky book to begin with? It's Dee Dee Ramone--what'd you expect? Written as no one else could've done, these chapters, which start out pretty coherent, represent days in the life of Dee Dee Ramone at the creepy old, scuzzy Chelsea. While I believe some of the incidents are real, the majority of the book is Dee Dee's wild and crazy imagination--a lot of it seemingly written at times of withdrawal. Any Dee Dee Ramone fan needs this in their collection. I'll admit, some of it is practically vomit-inducing, but, hey, it's Dee Dee--gotta love him!

1 out of 5 stars why buy this book when you can just talk to people on drugs for free?.......2006-01-14

worst book ive ever read. ever. totally horrible. the gore is kinda okay at first, but then it just gets too surreal. like a dream, but not a cool dream. its like when you have some dream you thought was super cool, and then you tell your friend, and your friend is like "wow not only does that make no sense, but you are totally retarded". anyways, this book is a total waste of time and money, and all i learned from it is dont stay at the chelsea hotel or you will get AIDS, or get murdered.

1 out of 5 stars Next time, leave the Punk Rockers in Hell........2005-01-12

I don't know if i'm not up on things or what but this book never really made sense to me. The first half was ok. It was gory and pointless but at least I could understand where Dee Dee was going. However, when all of his punk rock friends show up as ghosts, everything goes to hell, literally. The rest of the book is a frantic, drug-induced dream that I don't really care to read about. Everything about this book is a mess and it should be kept off of every intelligent reader's bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars A great book for Dee Dee fans around the world.......2004-11-08

The book Chelesa Horror Hotel was an excellent book depicting the "fun" yet tragic life of the Ex-Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone. It shows in great(almost too great)detail, Dee Dee trying to survive in a horriable hotel, called the Chelsea Hotel. Some aspects of his life would be living with his "loving" wife Barbara, doing heroin with his dead pals (Sid Vicious, Johnny Thunders etc.) and trying not to get eaten alive by the Satanic Cult in the basement. Dee Dee has but one friend in life, his "talking" dog. The one thing i did not like about this book, was that sometimes you could not tell the difference between reality/fiction. He would explain what he saw was happening when he was high in the same detail as he would during his normal life. If you don't mind that then The Chelsea Horror Hotel is a MUST READ.

        Book Description

Le Comte de Saint-Germain - cultured, well-traveled, articulate, elegant, learned, honorable, an alchemist, and a man of many secrets - he is a mystery to the court of Louis XV. For Madelaine de Montalia, making her debut in society, he is as fascinating as he is enigmatic, an admiration he returns. But others are interested in her as well. The dark folly of her father's youth exposes her to danger that only someone of Saint-Germain's vast experience can comprehend or repulse.

In this first book of the Saint-Germain cycle, Saint-Germain establishes himself as the compassionate hero whose adventures span continents and millennia.

Historical romance type series. Obligatory beautiful woman. Throw in a father, a bunch of satanists and an honorable type of vampire, the
Count. The Count of course has to try and do his beast to make the most of both a terrible personal situation for the woman, and a terrible general political situation that surrounds them.

        2 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2006-10-28

I had polished off all the Anne Rice books (actually read them through several times), several non-fiction books about the real Count Vlad, and was looking for other vampire-themed material when I stumbled across this book.

First of all, let me say on a positive note that there were several interesting subjects that the author brought out in her book. For example, the point she made that St.-Germain (our leading vampire) was, when alive, considered average height, even tall. But now, on account of his preternatural inability to change, is below average height, with small hands and feet. Interesting point, since it is well documented that humans, as a whole, are indeed increasing in average height over the centuries. There are several other examples of interesting tid-bits that are woven into the story. Bravo to the author for some good research and application.

Unfortunately, however, these spots of interest were few and far between. On the whole I found the book's characters to be flat and unentertaining and the plot ludicrous (even for a vampire novel). The story line revolves around a cult of devil worshipers who are intent on sacrificing St.-Germain's beloved, Madelaine, in order to imbue themselves with power. While the descriptions of their debauchery is certainly colorful, it's also completely unbelievable. And despite the graphic picture we are painted of their rapes, murders and collusions, the cult never really gives off a believable air of menace. They are third-rate bullies who should have been killed off in the first chapter. Instead they are allowed to rampage through the entire book - mostly because the main character and vampire-not-so-extraordinaire, St.-Germain, is a complete "woose", with no backbone, and no menace.

The folklore image of the vampire is partially defined by his menace, his otherworldly power, his edge of danger and, yes, to some degree evil - even if that evil is tempered and restrained. That is part of what makes the vampire lore so magnetic - he, the vampire, is a creature beyond human limitations, morality or restraints. But author Yarbro seems to have taken the exact opposite approach. She has produced a vampire character who is more limited, less powerful, less menacing...more human. But the attempt is not carried off with any success. Instead you find yourself sighing, rolling your eyes and wishing St.-Germain would act like the vampire he is supposed to be.

Let me put it this way...Lestat would have eaten these so called cultists in the first paragraph then gone on to bigger and more interesting things. St.-Germain procrastinates, hides, hesitates and all but allows them to kill both him and Madelaine. He is a pathetic excuse for a vampire who is, in the end, only worthy of a yawn.

        4 out of 5 stars Comte de Saint-Germain's debut novel - A terrific read!.......2005-12-26

I'm hooked on Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's Comte de Saint-Germain series. Saint-Germain is just one of the many names our protagonist has gone by over the millennia. He is a vampire, you see. However, if you envision a being like those who people Anne Rice's or Laurell Hamilton's novels you will have a surprise coming. Just an aside here...I love many of Ms Rice's and Ms. Hamilton's books and characters. Ms. Yarbro's hero is simply different. He IS a hero, not an anti-hero. You won't find fangs, gore, horror and supernatural violence in "Hotel Transylvania." Our vampire is an exceptionally nice guy, sophisticated - quite civilized really - who just happens to have walked the earth since the beginning of time, practically. He does not personify evil, and, unlike other vampiric creations, he is able to stroll about in daylight as long as he carries soil from his homeland in his shoes. He does need blood to survive - but the human donor must be willing to give a pint or two or he won't drink. And true emotional attachments nourish Saint-Germain as much as the blood he takes. So the concept of "love" and affection figure strongly here. He is also extremely smart with a good intellect and love of the arts. As a matter of fact, he personifies the Renaissance man - with the added attraction of various super-human qualities.

"Hotel Transylvania" is the first novel in the series, originally published in 1978. I believe there are 16 Saint-Germain novels with a 17th due out soon. I don't know how important it is to read the books in order of publication as the stories do not take place in chronological order historically. I began with "The Palace" which is set in Renaissance Florence. "Hotel Transylvania's" setting is Paris, 1743, where Saint-Germain is a relative newcomer to the City of Light. He presents himself at court and to King Louis XV and makes a most favorable impression in the highest social circles. The rich and famous look upon him as exotic, foreign, mysterious and worthy of wooing. Prinz Ragoczy of Transylvania, is another name he goes by. However, only the members of the secret guild of sorcerers and alchemists call him so. The Prinz, (or Saint-Germain), has promised these men the secret of making jewels if they assist him in purchasing the Hotel Transylvania without bringing his name or identity into the transaction. The hotel is to be turned into a swank gambling establishment, with secret rooms set aside for the practice of alchemy, and, of course, rooms containing the soil from Saint-Germain's native land which he needs to survive.

Among the brightest attractions Paris offers is Madelaine de Montalia, an intelligent, beautiful ingenue just presented to society. She is immediately drawn to Saint-Germain. The feeling is totally mutual. However, the young woman is in grave danger as a cult of brutally sadistic Satanists have targeted her for their solstice ritual - a virginal blood sacrifice which is guaranteed to debase her and ultimately end with her death.

The author has done an extraordinary job of vividly portraying life in 18th century Paris with its glitter, glamour and political and social intrigues. Ms. Quinn Yarbro is truly a master at writing historical fiction. Her research is impeccable and the narrative is filled with fascinating period details. The character of Saint-Germain is actually modeled after a real person with the same name. Rumor has it he possessed an elixir of life and even when he reached the venerable age of one hundred years he appeared to be a man of 40-something. The actual Comte de Saint-Germain claimed to have lived centuries. Like our hero, he was an alchemist, said to be capable of creating gold and jewels. He was the confident of kings and queens and visited all the European courts, loving and leaving women along the way. He was a also spy, frequently involved in secret adventures. Ms. Quinn Yarbro took this actual figure of mystery and molded him into her protagonist.

The novel is rich in characters and storyline. I highly recommend it. I liked it enough to order books three and four in the series. ENJOY!

        3 out of 5 stars A different feel than other Saint-Germain novels.......2003-10-08

I'd read a number of other of Yarbro's Saint-Germain novels before coming back to this first book in the series, and it was a bit of a surprise. For all that this book was written in 1978, it reminds me more of Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series than do the other Saint-Germain books. While Saint-Germain is impotent, the bad guys here revel in sexual torture and rape as part of their Satanic rituals (boy, that sounds cheesy, but it works in this Gothic setting). While the detail is less graphic than Hamilton's more recent stories, these are not passages comfortable for the faint of heart. A good read, though the series gets better as it matures.

4 out of 5 stars More erotic vampire novel than horror novel.......2003-08-27

Hotel Transylvania takes place in 18th century Paris and serves as an introduction to the character of Le Comte de Saint-Germain, a vampire featured in this series of novels by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro. Anyone expecting horror will be disappointed in this novel, which I found to be reminiscent of --- although not necessarily derrivative of --- Anne Rice's vampire novels. Like Rice's novels, this book was more of an erotic vampire story than a horror story. Even the cover art makes it fairly obvious that the novel is a "bodice-ripper" with fangs. The story was predictable, but it was a smooth and enjoyable read and I enjoyed Yarbro's writing style. Though it ready annoyed me that every time she mentioned a door in the story she called it a "french door." Since the story takes place in France, I found that rather irritating. I gave the book 4 stars on the Amazon rating scale, but 3 1/2 stars would better reflect my feelings about the book.

Although the topic of humor has been dealt with for other eras, early medieval humor remains largely neglected. The essays collected here attempt to fill the gap, examining how the writers of early medieval sources deliberately employed humor to make their case. The essays range from the late Roman empire through to the tenth century, and from Byzantium to Anglo-Saxon England. The subject matter is diverse, but a number of themes link them together, notably the use of irony, ridicule and satire as political tools.

Although the topic of humour has been dealt with for other eras, early medieval humour remains largely neglected. These essays go some way towards filling the gap, examining how early medieval writers deliberately employed humour to make their cases. The essays range from the late Roman empire through to the tenth century, and from Byzantium to Anglo-Saxon England. The subject matter is diverse, but a number of themes link them together, notably the use of irony, ridicule and satire as political tools. Two chapters serve as an extended introduction to the topic, while the following six chapters offer varied treatments of humour and politics, looking at different times and places, but at the Carolingian world in particular. Together, they raise important and original issues about how humour was employed to articulate concepts of political power, perceptions of kingship, social relations, and the role of particular texts.

                Book Description

The Essential Guide to Managed Extensions for C++ is a comprehensive guide for programmers writing code in Managed Extensions for C++ (MC++). The information in this book comes straight from the horse's mouth--both authors have been key members of the Visual C++ .NET compiler development team and have spent most of their time implementing the language and educating others about managed C++.

The book is divided into two parts. Part One covers the basics of MC++. It starts with an introduction to MC++, and gives a brief overview of the .NET Framework. Next, it delves directly into the various features of MC++, including managed classes, interfaces, value types, properties, enumerations, pointers, arrays, operators, delegates, attributes, events, and exceptions.

Part Two of the book is devoted to the transition between the managed and unmanaged worlds. It starts with a general introduction to interoperability between managed and unmanaged code. The following chapters describe the Platform Invoke service, interoperability between COM and .NET, and various data marshaling techniques. The last chapter of Part Two shows how MC++ can be used to write interoperability layers over existing components with minimal overhead.

The Essential Guide to Managed Extensions for C++ provides a comprehensive guide for programmers writing code in Managed Extensions for C++ (MC++). The information in this book comes straight from the horse's mouth—both authors have been key members of the Visual C++ .NET compiler development team and have spent most of their time implementing the language and educating others about managed C++. Managed Extensions for C++ are extensions added to the Visual C++ .NET compiler to allow developers access to the functionality provided by the .NET Framework. Visual C++ .NET is the only .NET language that can generate both native and managed code, and it has a rich set of features to let you write managed applications for the .NET platform.

4 out of 5 stars Found this book very helpful.......2003-03-15

I've been doing a reasonable amount of MC++ recently and I started with this book. I've found it concise and to the point. As a previous reviewer said, "the authors go straight to the point assuming you are not a dummy". The book is in two parts, the first covers the fundamentals of writing applications/components in MC++. The second part covers interoperability. I found myself referencing both parts frequently...

5 out of 5 stars Want to do some MC++? ... Start Here.......2002-11-06

This book is what you are looking for if you are considering MC++.
Personally I use MC++ to create wrappers around processor-optimized libraries available for C/C++. Then I use them from C# and VB.NET.
Some reviewers say the book doesn't add much to the MSDN docs. However, this book is a lot more readable and I think it's worth it.
One more thing, the book is written by developers for developers. I really enjoyed that, the authors go straight to the point assuming you are not a dummy.

3 out of 5 stars good book about general purpose development with MC++.......2002-09-17

At first sight, the book may seem just a compilation of managed extension for C++ specs from MSDN. However, having read the book, I can say it provides valuable insights into managed extensions and even contains some tricks exploiting knowledge of mapping managed extensions into CLR.

This is the book about general-purpose software development with MC++ (C++ with managed extension). It will not tell you how to write .NET windowing or data access code, but it describes general principles and ideas helping write better code for .NET with MC++.

The book starts with simple MC++ constructs and finishes with mastering managed/native interop questions. Throughout the book, MC++ elements are compared with standard C++ equivalents. I don't think it was necessary, because the book is intended for skilled C++ developers who can easily see parallels themselves. However, knowing some differences was very important and interesting for me. Still in some places the author tends to advertise MC++ using some (unfair in my opinion) comparisons between standard C++ and MC++.

One shouldn't expect to know everything about MC++ after reading the book. A lot of experimentation is required to fully understand the power of MC++ over other languages targeting .NET. I think that the author could do a better job describing some effective techniques (available in the public domain, see [web page name]for example) that would have made the book a more exciting reading.

I recommend this book as a first step on the way of exploration MC++ capabilities.

2 out of 5 stars Not much beef.......2002-06-03

This book does not contain any more than the managed extensions specification document that ships with Visual Studio.net. It covers the most straight forward concepts with most straight forward and trivial examples.
I would have liked to see tougher topics covered like how to do callbacks from managed to unmanaged C++. Also more samples on interop between C#, MC++ and native C++.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for C++ programmers.......2002-04-28

"Essential Guide to Managed Extensions for C++" is required reading for any C++ programmer who wants to learn about writing C++ for .Net. What this book covers is virtually everything that a C++ programmer will need to write code using Managed Extensions for C++ (MC++). The first section is an excellent tutorial of the various features of MC++. This sections starts with a brief overview of the .Net framework. It continues with an introduction to MC++ with a very good low-level description of how managed classes differ from native classes. The remainder of this section contains the best explanation of managed extensions that you are likely to find. Topics are discussed in terms that make sense for C++ programmers. For example, delegates are discussed in terms of function pointers which they replace. The code samples are designed to give a clear explanation of the topic being discussed. The second part covers interoperability issues between managed and native code. For performance reasons C++ developers will sometimes need to mix code types so the explanation of how to avoid performance degradation when mixing managed and native code will be very useful. This section also includes descriptions of how to mix COM and .NET components and how to write wrapper classes for native code. For the C++ developer worried that C# is "the" .NET language, the authors show that MC++ is an important part of the .NET world and provide the information that C++ programmers need to develop for .NET.
