3 out of 5 stars Insurance Salesmen are dead........2001-04-24

I feel the insurance salesman is dying. I believe in a financial planner, one who can integrate investments with insurance. They can structure your financial future all by one person. I felt the book was informative, but wasn't descriptive enough. I would encourage anyone in the business to take a look at the book.

    Book Description

This volume is the culmination of an objective, in-depth study of the aggressive attack on the Alberta deficit launched by Premier Ralph Klein's government in 1993. Klein's was the first Canadian province to introduce drastic measures to eliminate its deficity--solely by means of expenditure cuts. After only two years, a $3.4 billion deficit had become a $958 million surplus. A Government Reinvented answers the question, 'How was the goal achieved so quickly?' The research needed to answer this question was distributed among nine experts in the fields of economics, education, and political science. The resulting papers were presented and critiqued at a conference in Banff, Alberta in November 1995. A Government Reinvented features the revised research papers, with parallel commentaries by specialists in economics, law, and public administration. The book examines not only the Klein government's specific cost-cutting strategies, but also general topics such as: theories of government budgeting and bureaucracy, institutional design and public policy, and the delivery of government services.

            Book Description

In the pursuit of policies and approaches that would sustain and accelerate economic development after the declared departure of colonial powers, African governments set up parastatals to serve as conduit for economic development through which governments could deliver services to the general populace. However, there is evidence that most parastatals do not utilize resources efficiently; instead, they impose heavy burdens on public resources and distort their use in the economy. Given the shortcomings of parastatals, in the 1980s, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), USAID, and other international donor agencies came to Africa with a philosophy of privatization. These multi-national corporations and donor agencies discretely advocated the overhauling of parastatals but the suggested processes and methods to this end were vague. Nonetheless, the arm-twisting strategies of multi-national corporations and international donors forced African governments to succumb to the philosophy of privatization. Unfortunately, in general, the philosophy, policies and practices of privatization operated to the economic detriment of African countries. Thus, as pursued in this text, it is actively compelling that the process of privatization be examined critically, considering advantages and disadvantages as well as the economic profitability for countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

                * The most complete and rigorous examination of the core issues in global water privatization debates and conflicts
                * Provides a wealth of cases studies, empirical data, thematic approaches, and frameworks for analysis
                * Essential reading for academics, policymakers, donor agencies, and activists involved in water privatization issues around the world

In recent years, as globalization and market liberalization have marched forward unabated, the global commons continue to be commodified and privatized at a rapid pace. In this global process, the ownership, sale, and supply of water are increasingly the flashpoints for debates and conflict over privatization, and nowhere is the debate more advanced or acute than southern Africa.
"The Age of Commodity" provides an overview on the debates over water privatization including a conceptual overview of water "privatization," how it relates to human rights, macro-economic policy and GATS, and how the debates are shaped by research methodologies. The book then presents case studies of important water privatization initiatives in the region, drawing out crucial themes common to water privatization debates around the world including corruption, gender equity, and donor conditionalities. This is book is powerful and necessary reading in our new age of commodity.

                      Book Description

The debate over privatization in Africa versus redistribution of economic resources in an equitable manner is summarized in this comprehensive overview of the range, complexity and significance of the legal, economic and practical questions involved. Most countries in Africa welcome privatization, at least to the point of disposal of losing enterprises. The plans for disposing of profitable state-owned enterprises are not well received. By using economic assumptions as theoretical constructs for analyzing the sociopolitical costs and benefits of private enterprise, an understanding of certain conclusions and social values of various privatization strategies is developed throughout this book.

                          Book Description

Do doctors ever have fun while actively practicing medicine? I don't mean the fun they have while playing golf or fishing or boating or traveling on their time off. I mean when they are involved with patients who are ill or when they are med students learning how to handle such patients. . From those patients who can't tell right from left to those who swallow kumquats whole; from those who pester their doctors about their "bronchial" (aargh!)conditions, to those who call at three a.m to say, "Doctor, I was just lying here wondering.," these true episodes cover the gamut. My book, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the O.R., is a collection of stories that takes the reader from medical school through surgical training, into private practice, and to the day of my retirement as Medical Director. These stories are amusing and at times poignant, as well as personally revealing.

                          Book Description

Joscelyn Godwin explores music's effects on matter, living things, and human behavior. Turning to metaphysical accounts of the higher worlds and theories of celestial harmony, the author follows the path of musical inspiration on its descent to Earth, illuminating the archetypal currents that lie beneath Western musical history.

A very interesting book, that will attract the attention of both music lovers and philosophy fans.
Its analysis starts from the very Pythagorean theory of the Harmony of the Spheres and extends to the beginning of last century.
Analysing each theory, the book provides the opportunity to people without any profound knowledge of music of philosophy, to understand some of the theories that shaped western music through the ages.

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Work.......2004-12-29

Though this may seem an unnecessary addition to my review, Professor Joscelyn Godwin is a professor I have had/will have again at Colgate University, and a man of utmost scholarship. That said, this book suffers from one minor flaw, not worth removing a star: his archaic writing style. Godwin's ideas are intelligent, thought-provoking, and well-presented...but his writing style is the kind that can make the average reader's eyes glaze over. Of course, the "average reader" will not be reading this book, but a bit of accessibility stylistically never hurt anybody...then again, who am I to judge Professor Godwin? He was just grading my papers, hehe.

Anyway, this book is brilliant. Vast amounts of information are thrown at the reader in a manageable and coherent fashion, and all the chapters follow a logical course of thought which supports the ultimate thesis that the universe we live in is a musical one, dominated by harmonies and melodies of untold beauty, not equations of mind-boggling complexity. His own 4 chapters are excellent forays into speculative music, presenting scientific evidence of the effects of music in the universe, as well as anecdotal/mythological excerpts to support the idea. At times, it seems as though fact and fiction are indistinct, and this would be an accurate view. But even Godwin himself notes this in Chapter 2. The ultimate relevance is that, whether fact or fiction, Godwin has touched upon some kind of truth (in my opinion), which his scientific evidence backs up, and his anecdotal/mythological evidence presents to us.

The final section is the clearest description of complex musical philosophies I have yet found. Certainly the scales and tone-zodiacs (not to mention ideas) he presents are hard to decipher, but he explains them well in layman's terms, so even without a music degree, one can figure out the gist of what is going on. Godwin's own Harmony of the Spheres sourcebook includes much of this in even more detail, some more clear, some less, but this is a great quick guide to many confusing musical philosophies and concepts. Truly mind-blowing stuff if you ask me, especially the stuff on Kepler and the last several pages of the book...

Ultimately, this book is a fantastic read, one that will make you question your existence, the realities you perceive, the nature of myth, and the power of music. Godwin opens minds...but try to get the 87 edition used, it has 2 passages he left out of the 95.

                          5 Stars. Without Question.

5 out of 5 stars A Starting Point for Musicians.......2002-12-11

This was the book which started my continuing quest for information regarding the foundation of music. It is a difficult read ONLY because one needs a huge background covering many individuals--Pythagoras, Kepler, Fludd, Hermes Trismegistus, Gurdjieff, the theosophists Blavatsky, Steiner, and Scott--all of whom I had but scant knowledge prior to reading this book. Godwin covers a wealth of information but only touches briefly on each: cosmology, the monochord, music of the spheres, temperment. I have reread this book several times; whole paragraphs are underlined. If you realize something is seriously wrong with the way music is presently used and abused by society, this book may be a starting point for you as it was for me six years ago.

                            Book Description

Flares, lava lamps, safari suits and a national cinema dominated by smutty comedy and cheap softcore have all made 1970s British popular culture appear too gruesome to recycle as nostalgia and too offensive for academic study. But the generic artifacts of the 1970s have become important reference points in contemporary popular culture.

British Low Culture revisits the 1970s through some of its least respectable films and television programs, from Benny Hill to Confessions of a Windowcleaner. Identifying the trickle down of permissiveness into mass consumption as a key feature of the 1970s, Leon Hunt considers the values of an ostensibly "bad" decade and analyzes its implications for issues of taste and cultural capital. Offering insights into the complexities of popular culture and popular memory, British Low Culture fills an important gap in the study of British cultural history.

                            Book Description

Public radio stands as a valued national institution, one whose fans and listeners actively support it with their time and their money. In this new history of this important aspect of American culture, author Jack W. Mitchell looks at the dreams that inspired those who created it, the all too human realities that grew out of those dreams, and the criticism they incurred from both sides of the political spectrum. As National Public Radio's very first employee, and the first producer of its legendary "All Things Considered," Mitchell tells the story of public radio from the point of view of an insider, a participant, and a thoughtful observer. He traces its origins in the progressive movement of the 20th century, and analyzes the people, institutions, ideas, political forces, and economic realities that helped it evolve into what we know as public radio today. NPR and its local affiliates have earned their reputation for thoughtful commentary and excellent journalism, and their work is especially notable in light of the unique struggles they have faced over the decades. More than any other book published on the subject, Mitchell's provides an accurate guide to public radio's development, offering a balanced analysis of how it has fulfilled much of its promise but has sometimes fallen short. This comprehensive overview of their mission will fascinate listeners whose enjoyment and support of public radio has made it possible, and made it great.

Jack Mitchell's book fails to uncover anything that couldn't have been found reading the wikipedia entry for NPR. The book documents albeit in a dry manner the history of public radio in a chronologically linear manner. The author's vantage point in the uncovering of these events have not been reflected in the narration of the events.

I am still waiting for the book that will open the hood on the operations of the NPR.

4 out of 5 stars IN THE BEGINNING..........2005-09-13

LISTENER SUPPORTED provides a useful(if somewhat dry)account of National Public Radio's development from its difficult birth in 1967 to the end of the 20th century. Mitchell has impeccable insider credentials for the task: he was NPR's first employee, the first producer of All Things Considered, and three-time chairman of NPR's board of directors.

In keeping with his current job as a journalism professor, Mitchell takes a detached, academic approach to the problems and controversies that have beset NPR over the years. The book would be more engaging if Mitchell displayed more personal passion and would have attracted a larger audience if he had chosen to dish behind-the-scenes gossip about NPR's on-air personalities.

LISTENER SUPPORTED is worth reading just for the story of the machinations of Bill Kling, President of Minnesota Public Radio (a.k.a. Public Radio International). He used Prairie Home Companion as a vehicle to become a competitor to, as well as a customer of NPR. Kling is proof that entrepreneurial spirit exists even in the ivory towers of public radio.

The least interesting part of the book, for this reader, was the final section dealing with critics of the "Right" and of the "Left". Mitchell categorizes critics of the left as "Frustrated Progressives", "Frustrated Pacifists", "Frustrated Curators", "Frustrated Mass Educators", "Frustrated Populists", or "Frustrated Community Builders". He offers no neat pigeon holes for the rightest critics.

If you're a public radio fan wanting to know what Garrison Keillor is really like, or how angry Bob Edwards actually got when he exited Morning Edition unwillingly after almost 25 years as host, this is not the book for you. It is a highly readable, highly personal perspective on the philosophies and politics that shaped NPR and made public radio a force in American media. Those most apt to appreciate it are among the thousands of people who have been employed in public radio over the last 30 years -- including career veterans who will recognize the names and remember the events that Mitchell recalls.

5 out of 5 stars Free image edition for anyone!.......2007-08-11

A very good option to enter the free open source Gimp. The book is intended for people that never used an image manipulation program but will be equally interesting for people trained in other closed software alternatives, looking for a reliable free option to manipulate their photos, made collages or create graphics for web pages. IMHO this book is a must as is very clear, extensive and very well illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Learning Free Graphics Tools.......2007-08-06

This book is very complete, and easy to follow. It takes you through both graphics and image editing with the free GIMP image-editing software. Very up-to-date, in fact, I am not able to get the version that it is based on yet. GIMP is a very capable open-source tool with a steeper learning curve than some editing software.

5 out of 5 stars Whole new world!.......2007-08-01

Excellent! Having been completely confused using the gimp in the past the book is very helpful. Beginning GIMP is as it states for all levels of experience. I have been using the gimp for my new hobby digital photography. It sure beats picasa for versatility. The book clearly explains all the nuances of the gimp and there are many. The gimp although a powerful tool is not very intuitive. This book clears it all up. Thanks Akkana Peck as I would have taken too long to figure it all out and lost interest and been stuck using inferior editors.

4 out of 5 stars Beginning Gimp: From Novice to Professional.......2007-07-29

This book is very good, step by step instructions for beginners and good background information for advanced users.

                              5 out of 5 stars worth it.......2007-07-22

I am an experienced user of Photoshop CS2 and a novice GIMP user. I am not really a computer geek, though I am not totally ignorant.

This book takes it step by step from the beginning and is very easy to understand. The subject is quite similar to PS2, so that may help my understanding, but I believe that if I knew nothing about photo manipulation software, I could easily follow this book. I recommend it highly
