Book Description
Books in Barron's pocket-sized Business Dictionaries series list thousands of specialized terms alphabetically and present concise definitions. The authors of all books in this series are recognized authorities in their special fields. Newly updated editions reflect new technologies and recent business trends. This volume defines more than 4,200 insurance terms that should be understood by agents, brokers, actuaries, underwriters, personnel professionals dealing with employee-benefit programs, and consumers who need to understand the insurance policies they plan to buy. Terminology covers life, health, property, and casualty insurance, as well as retirement plans. This new and heavily updated Fourth Edition has been expanded with approximately 200 new terms, and updatings of many other terms to reflect the current state of the insurance industry.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific Tool!!.......2007-10-24
This book is a great tool for the insurance studies, the concepts are very clear and help you to have a better knowledge.
This is a good non-specialist dictionary of insurance terms and principles that's a must have in addition to speciality books........2007-09-05
I work specifically in Global Marine & Energy, Property insurance, onshore and offshore. I don't use this dictionary very often, but I'm glad I have it for general reference.
The definitions/explanations are good and basic, and nicely generalized so that they're not confusing how a term applies to, say, Auto vs. Offshore Package vs. Hull and Machinery vs. Home--so it's useful regardless of the particular branch or discipline of insurance you work on. If the term you're looking for is not in this dictionary, then it likely is specific to a certain speciality--Marine Cargo for instance has a host of terms that wouldn't belong in this book at all.
I wouldn't mind seeing a monster dictionary of all insurance terms, but think that's better fit for the academically inclined than the broker or underwriter.
You will need additional books for whatever your speciality is because this dictionary, rightfully, makes no attempt to be all inclusive. If it did, it would be confusing and useless to those of use who don't work in Personal Lines for example.
Very Useful for the Insurance Professional Newbie .......2007-06-02
I find this a pretty complete reference book for someone new to the insurance side such as a young or new risk manager. The definitions are fairly indepth but still short and to the point. To critique the book severly, as some other reviewers have, I suggest reccommending another reference source, within your review, that is considered better. I would be most anxious to take a look at it since it would allow a fair comparison.
Not worth the money; filled with non-insurance-related terms.......2007-05-23
A better name for this product would be the Long-Winded Financial Terms Dictionary. Its pages are filled with non-insurance-related definitions for accounting, legal, and other financial-service terms. Worse yet, several key insurance-related terms that have come into existence in, say, the past century are not included. The only thing I have ever used this book for is to cite the author's claim that U.S. citizens spend more money on insurance than any other type of expenditure - but that occurs in the preface. The terms themselves are unhelpful and incomplete, and the book's pages are stuffed with filler.
Very Helpful!.......2006-01-30
The insurance industry has its own language. I have yet to come across a term that is not in this dictionary!

Dictionary of Health Insurance And Managed Care, A must have for every Health Care Provider and Health Care Professional.......2006-04-27
The need for the Dictionary of Health Insurance And Managed Care has been a necessity for a long time. Clear, concise references tools are very much needed by all Health Care providers, Managers, Administrator and every health care professional. The information contained in this book can be the difference between barley getting by in a practice and hoping to keep up with the changes to really having a true understanding of the industry and how the topics relate to an active practice or health care operation.
I found the Dictionary of Health Insurance And Managed Care to be very well thought out and the terms are easy to understand.
When you receive raw information from a reference resource such as the Federal Register or other reference resources everyone does not easily decipher the information contained. Having this type of reference book will greatly enhance the readers ability to not only understand the terms and meanings but how to apply them in a active day to day operation of medical practice.
I would highly recommend the Dictionary of Health Insurance And Managed Care to everyone who has chosen a career in any health care discipline.

From the Foreword.......2006-02-08
Why do we need the Dictionary of Health Insurance and Managed Care, and, why do payers, providers, benefits managers, consultants, and consumers need a credible and unbiased source of explanations for their health insurance needs and managed care products?
The answer is clear!
Health care is the most rapidly changing domestic industry. The revolution occurring in health insurance and managed care delivery is particularly fast. Some might even suggest these machinations were malignant, as many industry segments, professionals, and patients suffer because of them. And so, because knowledge is power in times of great flux, codified information protects all people from physical, as well as economic harm.
For example, federal government forecasts reveal that total expenditures on health services will surpass $2 trillion in 2007, and account for 17% of the gross domestic product. As a country, Americans spend dramatically more total dollars on health care, and more as a percentage of the economy, than they did two decades ago. Along with these growing expenditures, the government is assuming greater control. Currently, almost 50% of health care costs are under federal or state mandates through Medicare and Medicaid entitlement programs. The recent prescription drug program and implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act adds more confusion for medical providers and facilities, insurance agents, health plans, and patients. This tumult occurred so rapidly that Americans can no longer assume operative definitional stability. The resulting chaos is as expected.
Fortunately, the Dictionary of Health Insurance and Managed Care provides desperately needed nomenclature stability to health insurance policy issues and managed care procedural concerns. With almost 10,000 definitions, abbreviations, acronyms, and references, the Dictionary is the most comprehensive and authoritarian compendium of its kind, to date.
Health care economist Dr. David Edward Marcinko, MBA, and his colleagues at the Institute of Medical Business Advisors, Inc., should be complimented for conceiving and completing this laudable project. The Dictionary of Health Insurance and Managed Care lifts the fog of confusion surrounding the most contentious topic in the health care industrial complex today. My suggestion, therefore, is to "read it, refer to it, recommend it, and reap."

Book Description
The world is changing and so are international trades in goods and services, their financing as well as their traditional forms of ensuring and guaranteeing. The second edition of this dictionary takes account of this ongoing development.
Twenty years ago, export credit insurance was, nearly exclusively, a matter of state support to the exporting industry: preferential financing facilities offered through state banks and public export credit insurance through governmental or state-near export credit agencies (ECAs). The terminology was dependent on the national legal and commercial systems of these institutions. Ten years ago, it became obvious that export credit insurance was no longer an exclusive matter of ECAs when all major private credit insurers began to offer cover for commercial risks. Today, we are at the edge of covering even political risks on the account of private credit insurance companies and their reinsurers.
These economic developments left their traces in the terminology of export financing and credit insurance and will continue to do so in the future. This dictionary may be useful to practitioners, exporters, bankers and credit insurance companies in particular, as well as to specialised translators, scholars and scientists.

Product Description
Legendary British producer and early recording pioneer Joe Meek was known, among other things, for pushing the creative and technical audio envelope in the 1950s and '60s. In this exciting new title - the first ever to delve into the techniques employed by Meek - you'll learn practical tips and advice based on the information contained in interviews with people who worked extensively with Meek until his untimely death in 1967. Learn how he got, and how you can get, the best performances out of artists, plus his creative micing techniques, and use of effects processors and unusual 'instruments' to get new sounds. A great guide to thinking outside the lines while recording! Includes an exciting audio CD of Meek's legendary album I Hear a New World!
Customer Reviews:
Interesting insight into this original producer.......2006-06-29
This book shares some of the tricks and techniques of this legendary producer and shows how all pop recording and record production since has been influenced by them. The included recording and notes are especially helpful.
Wonderful work on an obscure topic.......2005-12-21
To anyone who is old enough to remember hearing the original 'Telstar' on the radio, this is a wonderfully researched bio on the life and work of a vastly underappreciated godfather of audio engineering. Also being a huge Deep Purple fan, I was surprised to learn that the great Ritchie Blackmore, was a first call session player for Joe (as a member of the Outlaws) and that there are some enticing recordings he made that I now have to spend the rest of my life searching for!
Great stuff. The equipment & discography are very well researched, in addition to the personal stuff. And you just can't beat the included disc of studio experiments, on the bizarre factor.
Well Done.......2005-11-13
Extremely interesting book about Joe Meek, the innovative English recording engineer and producer who made hit records in his flat. Has lots of detail and pictures of Joe's recording gear and recording techniques. Discusses how Joe Meek pushed the recording gear to it's limits while creating new sounds. Highly recommended.
A Great Read for Anybody Interested in Sixties Pop & Rock.......2002-06-05
I am very impressed by Barry Cleveland's book. He provides a great deal of specific information about Joe Meek's recording techniques and equipment. However, be not afraid, this is not done in a pedantic technical manner; it's very readable for the non-technical.
Being well familiar with most of Meek's recorded output, I especially enjoyed Cleveland's detailed commentaries on certain of Meek's recordings. For my taste, Cleveland could have gone on for many more pages on the same subject with different tracks.
I perceive Cleveland to be outside of the intense (mostly English) Meek cult which brings some fresh perspective on his work.
What more can I say? This was a good read that I raced through and will no doubt revisit frequently. The CD of "I Hear a New World" is a great bonus. It's surprisingly different from the RPM release. It makes me appreciate the work Roger Dopson and his associates did to bring out the RPM version.
An inspiration for all home recordists..........2002-03-08
The British record producer Joe Meek has attained posthumous cult status and rightly so: his innovative work broke the highly conservative mould of studios where engineers sported white coats as though they were in a science laboratory and everything was done "by the book".
In Meek's case the circumstances of his life - and more to the point his death - have created a lot of urban myth. After all, Spector may have discharged revolvers at ceilings, but Meek ended his own life - and that of his landlady - with a large shotgun and all on the anniversary of Buddy Holly's death!
With those factors in mind, it's refreshing to discover a book which traces Joe Meek's life, not for the sake of cheap scandal, but through the music he made through his innovative recordings and equipment creations/modifications. Barry Cleveland has achieved the near impossible by delivering a book which is both an enjoyable work for the non-technical reader and highly satisfying for the studio "anorak" who wants to know the fine details of Meek's home studio in London's Holloway Road. Cleveland has tracked down the closest surviving sources who bring to life a picture of the cluttered apartment where Joe Meek took on the mighty forces of EMI, Decca and the like and won - for a while at least - with hits like Telstar, Johnny Remember Me and Have I The Right.
If the words are top class, the layout is every bit the match for them, with many photos I've never seen before (and believe me, I've seen a lot of Meek-related photos!) and a full discography. I can't reccomend this book enough... how about 6 stars out of 5?!

Book Description
In this interdisciplinary study of the laws and policies associated with commercial radio and television, Thomas Streeter reverses the usual take on broadcasting and markets by showing that government regulation creates rather than intervenes in the market. Analyzing the processes by which commercial media are organized, Streeter asks how it is possible to take the practice of broadcasting—the reproduction of disembodied sounds and pictures for dissemination to vast unseen audiences—and constitute it as something that can be bought, owned, and sold.
With an impressive command of broadcast history, as well as critical and cultural studies of the media, Streeter shows that liberal marketplace principles—ideas of individuality, property, public interest, and markets—have come into contradiction with themselves. Commercial broadcasting is dependent on government privileges, and Streeter provides a searching critique of the political choices of corporate liberalism that shape our landscape of cultural property and electronic intangibles.

Shockingly short on implementation details, Virtual Private Networks for Dummies tries to craft a scattershot collection of facts and references into an introduction to virtual private networks (VPNs). That's not to say that this book is insubstantial, because it's not; probably, you'll learn something about networking, cryptography, authentication infrastructures, and other aspects of VPN engineering. Also, it's done a good job of compiling references to VPN resources on the Internet, so you'll have plenty of surfing to do. But it never explains how to build a VPN--or even the simplest laboratory simulation of one--and that's precisely the kind of how-to information that buyers of this book will want.
True enough: every situation that calls for a VPN is different; and, if the book had shown how to implement a VPN with one turnkey solution, users of the others would complain. But even the narrowest example would have been better than some of the stuff that fills these pages. At one point, the reader is walked through the process of encoding and decoding a plain-text message--by hand--by using a shared private key. Spare us, please. The book gives the vital Layer 2 Transport Protocol all of two short paragraphs. Sections on public-key encryption and digital certificates do a good job of unraveling perennially misunderstood processes, but they don't offset the lack of details on VPN. --David Wall
Topics covered: Aspects of virtual private networks (VPNs), organized to get potential VPN implementers thinking about security and other design issues. Specifically, Public-Key Infrastructure (PKI); digital certificates; turnkey VPN packages; and a lot of general stuff about what VPNs are good for, and how to design a good one.
Book Description
Let’s face it: the information age makes dummies of us all at some point. One thing we can say for sure, though, about things related to the Internet is that their best strengths are often also their worst weaknesses. This goes for virtual private networks (VPNs). They may reach a wide base of customers – but can also be vulnerable to viruses, hackers, spoofers, and other shady online characters and entities. VPNs may allow for super-efficient communication between customer and company – but they rely on information which, if compromised, can cause huge losses. The Internet is still a frontier – sometimes so wide open it leaves us bewildered – and, like any frontier, the risks go hand in hand with potentially huge rewards.
Virtual Private Networks for Dummies offers you a no-nonsense, practical guide to evaluating your company’s need for a VPN, understanding what it takes to implement one, and undertaking the challenging quest to set it up, make it work, and keep it safe. Whether you’re the resident expert leading the project team, or you just want to learn what makes e-commerce tick, this detailed, from-the-ground-up guide will soon have you comfortably conceptualizing:
- Security goals and strategies
- The evolution of VPNs
- Privacy in VPNs
- Extranets
- Remote-Access VPNs
- Funding
- Custom network solutions design
- Testing VPNs
- And more
With new products and technologies offering supposedly revolutionary solutions to IT departments every day, this book focuses on the real world – you know, the one full of obstacles, mishaps, threats, delays, and errors – and gives you the background knowledge to make decisions for yourself about your VPN needs. Written with a dash of humor, Virtual Private Networks for Dummies contains both technical detail (standards, protocols, etc.) and more general concepts (such as conducting cost-benefit analyses). This clear, authoritative guide will have you securely and cost-effectively networking over the Internet in no time.

Awful.......2006-06-25
This book contains basically no information - instead it's just a very very long definition of what a VPN is. If I could give it less than one star I would.
In serious need of updating........2005-06-01
I should have paid more attention to the copyright date: this text is too old to be of much use to anybody. Computer technology changes quickly and this book was written in the late 90's. For example if you already use Windows XP, there is some built-in VPN capability which you could use for free; but this is not even mentioned due to the age of the book. I wish the "For Dummies" people would produce an updated book on this subject.
Disappointing at best........2004-11-27
I found this book to be a largely random collection of superficial comments about VPN's. There seems to be no coherent flow or direction and the few items of value, while interesting, are completely tangential to the implementation of an actual VPN. Even one well presented example of an actual implementation would have been welcome.
One doesn't expect in depth analyses in the "Dummies" series, but they generally present some introductory level and quite usable "how to's" that can get you started in the right direction. Unfortunately, this book falls woefully short of providing a useful starting point.
This book has set a new speed record in moving from my mail box to my recycling box. I honestly cannot give it even one star.
Not too bad, but vague..........2003-01-20
I found the book average. The majority of it is spent explaining the concepts and theories of VPN, but nothing about set-up or troubleshooting.
Where'a a list of VPN errors? How would I configure a VPN session on my server? What sort of browsers work best? Some good information on encryption, but I found it all very 20th century...
As It Promises, An Introduction.......2000-03-16
As part of the For Dummies series, this book delivers what it sets out to do: provide an introduction to the technically complex world of VPNs. I searched other titles and found them all starting at a higher level of competence than I possessed. This book provides the beginning primer that leaves me ready to move to those other available volumes. This book focuses upon security issues (the author is a security specialist), but also provides useful historical information, steps to plan, implement and test your VPN, and illustrative case studies of those who have been there before. The book also includes helpful appendices about other available resources (a buyer's guide), and even includes hints on how to justify a VPN to your boss...
