          5 out of 5 stars This is a dodger*s Bible.......2004-09-02

Have you ever had that 'friend' who called 8 times a day ...and kept saying on the machine...."are you there? Pick up.... are you there." Or someone whe keeps asking you to volunteer at their club....and you have zero spare time. You feel guilty saying "no"??? This book is funny, light hearted, and I love it. I can't believe this is out of print. There is a reviewer who says, "when is it o.k. to lie?" I politely disagree, due to the fact this author has a chapter titled....the 7 Dodging Sins. Things you should not do to dodge folks... i.e. never returning their calls. She just teaches you a crafty way to return the call. I vote- BUY IT.

4 out of 5 stars An amusing and useful guide.......2002-07-24

Let's face it, every once in a while there are situations and people in the world that we just want to avoid. Thankfully, Jeanne Martinet has recognized this and provided us with "Artful Dodging", a quick and humourous guide to gracefully disentangling yourself from unpleasant situations.

Other reviews give this book low marks for encouraging lying, which I suppose it does. But then again, if you always tell the truth about everything to everyone, why on earth would you need anything this book has to say? For those of us who lack the ability to regularly dish out potentially painful truths ('To be honest, I don't want to go out to dinner with you because I find you incredibly irritating and your table manners are Cro-Magnon'), this book can be a lifesaver.

Martinet provides a wide range of strategies for extricating yourself from awkward situations that require no theatre training to pull off. She also gives you ways to prevent the need to dodge, such as the preemptive strike. Her anecdotes of these strategies in action, both working and backfiring, provide great humor and make this a quick read. I heartily recommend this book for anyone who's looking for a gentle way to avoid dreadful dinner parties and overwhelming acquaintances.

1 out of 5 stars Since when is it permissible to lie through life??.......2000-10-17

Lying is NOT an acceptable means for getting out of your responsibilities. This type of book adds to the free-fall of society by endorsing the notion that it's just fine to break a commitment to someone and not suffer any consequences. This is all done under the idea that as long as you're not rude about it, then it's fine. Nothing could be further from the truth.

5 out of 5 stars Another winner from "Miss Mingle".......2000-07-19

As someone who travels often and is naturally prone to the sorts of predicaments that require dodging -- artful or otherwise -- I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Jeanne Martinet dispenses advice with such wit and intelligence that I read the book in one sitting, a feat I was able to pull off thanks to her clever suggestions for ducking the usual interruptions and intrusions. Martinet's blend of stylish writing and brittle social commentary has made me a fan ever since "Art of Mingling." Can't wait for the next one from Jeanne Martinet!

3 out of 5 stars Light, fluffy, and fun.......2000-06-30

Some lazy weekend afternoon, pour yourself a cup of tea and sit down with this charming little petit four of a book. Should you require a modicum of instruction in the gentle art of tact, rest assured, your lean collection of shopworn excuses will emerge polished to a swanky sheen. You may even pick a few sly new tales with which to bewitch your audience unaware. You will feel slippery enough to escape even the stickiest of predicaments. If, however, you happen to be one of nature's more cunning creations, capable of fending of the most persistent of life's little inconveniences with a nonchalance that borders on the virtuosic, you may snicker quietly behind the shielding pages in the pleasure of a well-shared private joke.

            Book Description

An exceptional text for undergraduate and graduate music students, Modal Counterpoint, Renaissance Style uses a wide variety of carefully graded exercises to present guidelines for writing and analyzing 16th-century music. The only species counterpoint text that draws directly on Renaissance treatises, it provides a conceptual framework to guide students through composition and analysis as it teaches them general structural principles. With stylistically diverse examples including not only motets and mass movements but also French chansons, German chorale settings, English canzonets, Italian madrigals, and Spanish organ hymns, villancicos, and ricercars, the book gives students a "real-life" feel for the subject. It distinguishes between technical requirements ("hard" rules) and stylistic guidelines ("soft" rules), and includes coordinated exercises that allow students to develop their skills systematically. The concluding chapters provide the formal and conceptual building blocks for longer pieces and encourage students to understand analysis and composition as complementary activities. By the end of the book, they are writing real compositions, not just drill exercises. Modal Counterpoint, Renaissance Style features carefully chosen contemporaneous musical examples, progressively graded exercises, historical asides that explain important topics and issues of the period, and a set of notes to the instructor. Combining the historical accuracy of "style-oriented" texts with the more systematic species counterpoint approach, this book offers a unique alternative to other methods.

5 out of 5 stars Species counterpoint with all the details.......2006-07-11

MCRS is the most comprehensive textbook in print (as of 2006) that teaches 16th century counterpoint in terms of species. (The Jeppesen counterpoint book also deals with species, but has only c.f. exercises, and is not organized in a student-friendly way.) Schubert's music examples are drawn primarily from Renaissance music treatises rather than repertoire, in order to illustrate the various species; the relatively small number of repertoire examples includes more French chansons than excerpts from Palestrina or Lassus. There are considerably more exercises and assignments--from preparatory "warmups" through analyses and error detections to c.f. fragments and complete cf's--than can be covered in a 15- week course. Canon and invertible counterpoint are recurring topics. My students found the organization of "hard" and "soft" rules helpful. The exercises can be time-consuming, so teachers considering adopting this book as a course text should allow ample time to go through it in advance to decide which exercises to use and to actually write out their solutions.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive introduction to Renaissance-style counterpoint.......2004-09-14

Peter Schubert is on the faculty of McGill University. As a first-time teacher of species counterpoint I am impressed by this book's organization, clarity of explanation and vast quantity of practice exercises. For the sake of the beginner student fine nuances of style are skipped, especially in the early chapters, in favor of a thorough grounding in rules, divided into "hard" and "soft" categories. The former are regarded as unyielding benchmarks of correctness, while the latter have to do more with stylistic ease and euphony. The sheer quantity of rules may overwhelm some students; careful explanation by the instructor is necessary to avoid glazed-over eyes and discouragement. At least in my edition there is as yet no attempt to put some of the examples and exercises in audio form, as do many theory texts today. I also think answer keys for some of the shorter exercises would make this book even more useful, though of course such things tempt some students to peek.

Still, the organization of the material and the obvious expertise of the author make this textbook a most impressive entry in the music theory teaching sweepstakes.

              Book Description

This book challenges the conventional view of Japanese society as being monocultural and homogenous. Unique for its historical breadth and interdisciplinary orientation, this study extends from the prehistoric phase to the present. It challenges the notion that Japan's monoculture is being challenged only because of internationalism, arguing that cultural diversity has always existed in Japan. It is a provocative discussion of identity politics around the question of "Japaneseness". The paperback edition has a new epilogue.

                Book Description

This is the first-ever compilation of the best and most provocative examples of MTV design and promo work.

With its instantly identifiable aesthetic sensibility, MTV has become an adjective, a language, style, and system unto itself, mimicked by advertisers, magazines, and others seeking that very desirable twelve-to-twenty-four demographic. From its blockbuster (1999) Video Music Awards campaign to the unforgettable Itchy ads to its on-air promos featuring the likes of Chris Rock, Shawn, Marlon and Keenan Wayans, and Jack Black, among others, MTV is about ideas that stick, unlike the teflon approach of most pop culture today. MTV has consistently been at the vanguard of contemporary visual media, producing work that is unique in its extraordinary global reach and its pervasive influence on high and low culture. Every designer fantasizes about doing work that is both cutting edge yet experienced by the mainstream; MTV's design is both. With an introduction by Moby, anecdotes from the MTV Design staff, and more than 300 four-color images, including the work of photographers David LaChapelle, Mark Seliger, and Dewey Nicks, along with video and print work from Anton Corbijn, Tractor, Hunter Gatherer, and Modernista, Not Teflon: MTV Design is as innovative and provocative as the legendary designs it compiles, and it's a must-have for every graphic designer, art director, advertiser, and design enthusiast.

                Book Description

I enjoyed reading this book. It really covers the fundamentals of the technology but also answer the why-questions of some implementations.

                — David Boschmans Weblog

This book introduces a fast-track path to understanding Atlas, and how this technology can increase the power and functionality of your code while conserving time and effort. The book begins with a bare-bones introduction that explains how Atlas relates to Ajax.

Microsoft Atlas is a web-client framework that makes building Ajax-style applications easier. It provides a prewritten framework that gives you a structured environment in which to work. Atlas also provides you with an object model and standardized debugging to make development faster and simpler.

Ajax is a new way of combining a number of Web technologies including JavaScript, dynamic HTML, and a feature known as XmlHttp (which reduces the need for client browsers to constantly reconnect to the server every time new information is downloaded). But at the moment, people developing with Ajax have to write their code from the ground up, which is complex and time consuming.

The book guides you through a series of practical examples that demonstrate the Atlas framework and available controls. After reading this book, you'll be able to compile a seamless Atlas-based application of your own!

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......2006-11-21

I found this book very easy to understand. If you are disappointed at the book "Programming Atlas" from O'Reilly, you may want to give this book a try.
This book is a much more interesting book to read.

4 out of 5 stars Good Atlas Reference.......2006-10-11

This book contains a good balance of information regarding the three main ways to program Atlas: JavaScript, AtlasScript, and server controls. Most Atlas-related articles and books tend to focus on one or two of those methods, because that's what the author is comfortable with, but Foundations of Atlas nicely covers all three.

All examples demonstrate whatever they're trying to do using all three methods, so you can compare the methods, and indirectly start to determine which method works best for you.

There is no time wasted on "related technologies". This book is solidly about Atlas alone, which is wonderful. For that reason (among others) I feel like I got my money's worth.

I personally enjoyed the descriptions of all the various behaviors on each object type. I have not seen that subject covered in such a way anywhere else.

I think there are some errors, as pointed out in some of the reviews here, and there is also some outdated information, but I would frankly expect such things from the first book published about a product that is not even in beta yet. In no way are the errors or outdated information distracting.

Besides, I am not one to download book code samples and use them in my own programs. I read through code examples in a book as if I'm reading normal descriptive text, and then I apply the techniques, not the exact code. Does anyone really use generic code found in a book in their own programs?

I found the code examples to be very good, in that I totally understand how to create Atlas programs after reading the book, and that's the most important measure for me.

For one thing, I have never really understood AtlasScript before reading this book, but after reading it I understand completely.

There really isn't much to choose from if you want to buy an Atlas book. There are several books that mention Atlas in one chapter, but very few that are written just about Atlas -- maybe just this one and "Programming Atlas" (O'Reilly), which I did not like at all.

Someone looking to buy a book on Atlas technologies should definitely buy this book, regardless of a few errors. You will learn a lot about Atlas.

5 out of 5 stars Stop your whining!.......2006-09-12

I've been seeing a lot of bad reviews for this book since (apparently) there are a lot of errors in the code. I suppose if your skills are lacking and you need to have a book spoon-feed you in order to learn a new technology, then this book probably is not for you.

On the other hand, if you want a well-written book, which lays out the concepts clearly, and are capable of using Microsoft's own documentation and or Google to assist with specific code issues, then this book is fantastic.

1 out of 5 stars Very, very poor.......2006-08-08

This book starts off with code errors in the first chapter. None of the code will compile. What a waste!!!! Stay away from this one!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Review of an evolving API.......2006-07-19

Microsoft Atlas is THE API for Ajax developers, and this book is a terrific grounding in how to use it. Great job Apress!

Yes, it suffers from some syntax problems that other reviewers have mentioned on here BUT it is an evolving API. It is based on an earlier CTP (April) and MS have just released the June one.

I emailed the author and he mentioned that he is working on revising and updating the text for the new CTPs. He is very fast to respond to any queries -- so I recommend that if you are having trouble, just drop him a line.

This is a fun and easy to read book, and the chapter that takes you through building a financial application in Atlas is worth the price alone.
