Animal Husbandry Like You Never Saw Before.......2004-02-05

Reminiscent of an old article in Esquire magazine, the author tries to draw parallels between human and animal mating behavior in an informative and very funny book.

This could be a simple listing of curious animal behaviors, but the author has gone one better. She shows what we can learn from the animal kingdom, both do's and don't's. She then usually makes a very entertaining quip on how to use this knowledge.

Many readers will be surprised by the supposedly natural behavior of these animals that includes adultery, philandering, prostitution (I kid you not), rape, orgies, masturbation, sex toys, stamina, death and just about anything else you can think of.

For those who may find these behaviors hard to swallow, there is an appendix that references sources for all of the facts portrayed.

Very fun and laugh inducing. Read it unless you are too shy (just remember bookstores keep it in the humor section).

This is a great book of laughs best when shared with friends. Where in the world did Gould find these facts? I will never think of a Dolphin the same way. Entertaining, and educational.

The Holly Olde Time Dickens festival up in Holly, Michigan, is the place to go to experience an old fashioned Dickensian Christmas. Held every weekend from Thanksgiving through the weekend before Christmas, this free festival includes the 'Christmas Carol' play, recitations of 'The Night Before Christmas,' 'The Twelve Days of Christmas,' as well as having chestnut vendors, sellers of fish and chips, and numerous gift shops set up in shanties among the Victorian streets laced with Victorian buildings. Seeing the 30+ period dressed Dickens actors roaming the entire area completes the picture.
The sounds you will hear as you stroll with Mr. Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, or even the Ghost of Jacob Marley is the beautiful music of the holiday. Whether it is the amazing choir of the Festival Singers or the quaintness of the Simply Dickens singers, the sounds of Christmas fill the air.
Much of what you hear at the festival stems from the 'New Oxford Book of Carols,' the old style tunes of long ago such as "Gloucestershire Wassail," "Boar's Head Carol," "Riu Riu Chiu," "A Virgin Unspotted," "The Holly Bears a Berry," and so much more. This is the most AMAZING collection of Christmas carols!
It includes many hard-to-find gems, such as "Cherry Tree Carol", "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree", "Three Kings", Darke's "In the Bleak Midwinter" (as well as the more famous & congregation-friendly setting by Holst), "Bethlehem Down", and several of the Oxford Descants. If you take a look at the table of contents, that alone should sell you. The editor's work in compiling this book was incredible. The voicing of the 4 (or more) part harmony in each of the carols is consistently excellent, performance-grade material.

This book is truly the best of its kind available, and for $35.00, it's quite a steal.

This book should be in the household of anyone who listens to Christmas music, whether or not they can actually sing. Although I do not read music, my sister does, and we were able to learn a carol that I had heard on a Christmas CD and perform it as a duet at Midnight Mass.

Pronunciation guide.......2007-07-30

This dictionary is good as far as giving Spanish/English translations, but its pronunciation symbols for Spanish speakers seeking the correct English pronunciation would be more helpful if it used known Spanish phonics rather than linguistic symbols. Many users of such a dictionary trying to learn English as a second language have had only a basic formal education. Using new symbols only complicates things. I realize that using the Spanish alphabet's symbols is less precise for some sounds, but at least this would help the learners approximate the correct pronunciation. This is a the opinion of a bilingual, bicultural former elementary teacher who has tried to help immigrants learn basic English.

Aug 2003 - I've reviewed abt 15 eng-span dictionaries and this is the best. very clear font, easy to read, 50,000 words eng to span and 50,000 span to eng. a happy medium between a pocket and full size dictionary but has probably all teh words you need unless you're speaking very advanced spanish. the same oxford series for french, german and italian are also the best in those languages i believe for the same reasons as above. cheap price too!

This dictionary has a nice print that is easy on the eye. The definitions are clear and give examples of usage so you can be sure you are using the appropriate word. The dictionary even includes computer and internet terms. This is a great dictionary to have on hand for study or travel.

An Interesting and Informative Behind-the-Scenes Book.......2001-11-09

With plenty of participation and anecdotes from all involved in the production (the producer, writers, directors and actors), this lovely little book provides a delightful behind-the-scenes look at this warm-hearted comedy-drama.

The book deals with how the idea for the series came about, how a town was chosen to represent Ballykissangel (whose name, incidentally, is Gaelic for "The Town of the Banished Angel"), the impact that the series has had on that town (Avoca, in County Wicklow) and its inhabitants. The book also touches on how a few of the effects were achieved, like the burning of Kathleen's house and the statue crashing through the roof of Ambrose's car. Included are brief 2-3 page bios of the actors and the characters they portray. Finally, there is an episode guide covering the first two series (the last episode of which is "Chinese Whispers").

Written by Geoff Tibballs, this beautiful little book is a 7 1/2" x 10" 128-page hardcover printed on thick, high-quality paper, and it is loaded with colour pictures (mostly scenes from the series).

In conclusion, this is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative little behind-the-scenes look at one of the most charming and gently amusing comedy-drama series around. Highly recommended.

This is a great book! It gives you a wonderful variety of behind the scenes photos and information, as well as, giving a photo and brief synopsis of each episode of the first two seasons. This book is fantastic! I loved reading about my favorite show. I was able to get the book the last time I was in Ireland and I was so excited when I saw it. The book gives you all the information you ever wanted to know about Ballkissangel. The book has amazing pictures of everyone in the cast. It has pictures of the cast from different episodes and showing them when they are not in front of the camara. I recommend this book for anyone who is a big fan of BallyK.

OK, but NOT FOR HACKING.......2005-01-23

This seems like a nice book for beginners to TiVo. There are occasionally intersting nuggets inside, so I don't totally hate it. For my purposes, though, it was awful. Leo LaPorte is technically savvy, but this book's description is DEFINITELY MISLEADING. It will NOT teach you how to get your Series 2 DirecTivo on the web. For that you will need "Hacking the Tivo" and a lot of time on dealdatabase.com's forums.

This book saved me time and grief in my upgrade........2004-11-25

I had a spare 120 gig drive left over from another project and found
out that I could use it to upgrade my series 1 Tivo machine. That was January 2004. I read various websites on the subject. I thought about it; read some more; thought about it some more; and never got anywhere. Finally, I read the section on InstantCake in Leo's book and realized that this was best solution for my situation. Lucky me. I ran the program and initialized the drive for TIVO before I opened the box. My Tivo had been reconditioned and I discovered that the drive(s) configuration didn't match what I had expected from my serial number. No matter. I just pulled out the old drives and installed the new drive. It worked right away although I had to figure out how to get both LNB's working,
change the daily call phone number, and TURN OFF TIVO SUGGESTIONS (my TIVO started recording everything until I remembered that I had to turn it off when I first got the machine.) This book saved me time and trouble.

The only downside is what I call "sidebar-itis." This problem is not unique to this book, but it gets harder and harder to read these books with all these sidebars disrupting and distracting you like a guy sitting behind you in a movie blabbering away. Otherwise, very useful.

I wrote the above in November 2004. A year and a half later, I find this book to be much more than I did then. I've found myself going back to it periodically and finding valuable help. My four stars now look to me a little on the stingy side, I would give it five now if I could.

I'm no ubergeek..........2004-10-27

...and I don't play one on TV. So maybe THAT's why I love this book. I mean, I'm the type who didn't laugh when told that there are some idiots in the world who actually called help desks looking for the 'any' key. Um,I was one of those idiots. So books like this, that give me some background, as well as some directions I can actually FOLLOW, are always welcome. And maybe I'm a sucker for style, but I love the tone of this book, and the goofy sense of humor.
