              Book Description

Advanced macroeconomics can seem a daunting prospect. Complex and poorly defined, infected with a variety of conflicting approaches, it is difficult for the student to get an overall picture of what there is and how it fits in. Foundations of Modern Macroeconomics is aimed at getting round this fundamental problem: it deals with all the major topics, summarizes the important approaches, and gives students a coherent angle on all aspects of macroeconomic thought. Each chapter deals with a separate area of macroeconomics, and each contains a summary section of key points and a further reading list, enabling the student to check what has been learnt and investigate further in other books.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Aonther best book on Advanced Macroeconomics.......2006-02-19

Comprehensive and comprehensible. The book covers a wide range of topics. See the contents of book. Students equipped with (ordinary and partial) differential calculus and matrix skills should be able to access the materials with comfort. All equations are followed by clear exposition in words. Instead of Blanchard and Fischer's Lectures on Macroeconomics, Foundations of Modern Macroeconomics is another best reference that should be kept by every serious graduate student.

5 out of 5 stars The best so far!.......2005-08-13

Of several available graduate texts in macroeconomics in the market, this is the best so far. While D. Romer (2001) is too naive (technically and expositionally), Ljungqvist & Sargent (2004) is too advanced (BTW, T. Sargent (1987) and Blanchard & Fischer (1989) are too old). Heijdra & Ploeg (2002) is just the right book at the right level; it's extremely well-written and technically sophisticated!

3 out of 5 stars Stick to the Tulips.......2004-01-16

This is not a good text book. The troubles start on the back cover where the face of Ricky "Tricky" Van Der Ploeg stares at me. The exposition is cluttered and there is an obsession with the word intermezzo throughout.

5 out of 5 stars an excellent book.......2002-12-28

While I was teaching a graduate level core macroeconomics course, I found that reference books are very limited. These include Blanchard & Fischer's book, Barro & Sala-i-Martin's book and Obstfeld & Rogoff's book. After I found a copy of this book, I immediately realized this book is very well written, and should be added to the above list. By reading this book, one can not only learn many insightful points and advanced technics, but also can have a good survey of literatrue in many areas. I suggest that anyone in the field of macroeconomics buy a copy (by the way, I believe David Romer's book is very badly written,I think Romer himself is technically weak).

                  Book Description

Israel Kirzner is the foremost proponent of the modern Austrian theory of the market process. Although this theory concurs with many of the major policy implications of neo-classical economics, it sharply diverges from much of the substance and methodology of neo-classicism.

Austrian economists criticize the "tight equilibrium" approach of the mainstream and emphasize the crucial role of ignorance, uncertainty, and the passage of time. By introducing the role of the entrepreneur and of entrepreneurial discovery--an innovation in which Kirzner's earlier work has played a central role--modern Austrian economists believe that it is possible to steer a middle course between those who believe the world to be always in full coordination, and those who believe it has no important coordinating properties at all.

The Meaning of Market Process offers new substantive insights in support of this Austrian position, and new historical interpretations of how the ideas of the modern Austrians have emerged. The essays focus particularly on the pioneering work of Carl Menger, the contributions of von Mises and Hayek, and the famous interwar socialist calculation debate--issues which are especially relevant at a time when the economic failures of socialism have become widely recognized.

                  Book Description

This book presents a study in the foundations of monetary theory with several unique features. It consists of two parts: a critique of the varieties of neoclassical monetary theory, and a rigorous statement of the foundations of Post Keynesian monetary theory. The two parts reflect Joseph Schumpeter’s distinction between monetary theories in the divergent traditions of Real and Monetary Analysis. Part I offers a novel critique of Wicksellian and neo-Walrasian general equilibrium versions of Real analysis. The critique of Wicksell's monetary theory demonstrates the general impossibility of defining the natural rate of interest without which the loanable funds theory collapses. The critique of neo-Walrasian monetary theory, on the other hand, exploits the inessential role of ‘money’ in temporary equilibrium and overlapping generations models and develops a novel interpretation of the Patinkin controversy and the Clower finance constraint. The implications of these developments are then traced through the debates between monetarists and Keynesians. Part II presents a rigorous argument for securing the foundations of Post Keynesian monetary theory in the tradition of Monetary Analysis. In the context of the evolution of the monetary system from commodity money to credit money. Wicksell’s natural rate of interest is replaced by Keynes's marginal efficiency of capital which is in turn applied to Myrdal’s notion of monetary equilibrium to derive a formal definition of Keynes’s point of effective demand. This leads to the most novel feature of the book: the demonstration of the existence of a long-run unemployment equilibrium without the assumptions of rigid wages. The principle of effective demand is shown to break Say’s Law by placing a limit on the profitable expansion of output before full employment is reached.

4 out of 5 stars Rogers overlooked Keynes's math model in ch 20 of the GT........2005-03-25

Rogers(R) has provided an excellent general summary of the supporting analysis used in the General Theory(GT) by Keynes to analyze his theory of effective demand from a strictly monetary point of view ,based on the application of his theory of liquidity preference explanation of the rate of interest as the return or reward for not "hoarding"(holding additional cash to self insure the decision maker against the uncertainty of the future as it relates to investing in fixed amounts of capital goods).Rogers covers Keynes's analysis, then,of the money market alone, isolated from the labor market and the commodity(goods or output)market. The mathematical analysis of the money market,as it pertains to the theory of effective demand,is provided by Keynes on pp.304-306 of the GT as an addition to his mathematical modeling of the labor and commodity markets that is contained in chapter 20 of the GT.Unfortunately,R makes no use of these mathematically worked out results that Keynes used in order to construct the mathematical proof of the existence of multiple equilibria ,which would include unemployment equilibria as well as the existence of a single point of full employment called a full employment equilibrium, that Keynes would make use of in the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT in order to demonstrate that Pigou's 1933 analysis in his The Theory of Unemployment in Part II,chapters 8-10,culminating in Pigou's p.102 proof was a special case that held only if an economy was operating on the boundaries of the static(short run) and dynamic(long run)production possibilities curves that required that the mpc+mpi=1.The loanable funds theory of the rate of interest is a special case that holds iff mpc+mpi(or,more generally, the mpsp=1)=1,where the mpc is the marginal propensity to spend on consumption goods, the mpi is the marginal propensity to spend on investment goods, and mpsp is the marginal propensity to spend on all goods, including imports, exports, and public goods.Roger's discussions on pp.219-223 of his book touch on all of these topics without ever presenting the explicit mathematical summary of the theory of effective demand that Keynes presented in the form of elasticities in chapters 10,20,and21 of the GT.Keynes's overall result is that w/p=mpl/(mpc+mpi),where w/p equals the real wage and mpl equals the marginal product of labor in the aggregate. If mpc+mpi <1,then you automatically obtain an unemployment equilibrium. It is impossible for labor to cut their money wage in the aggregate as the LHS of the equation specifying the labor market optimum must increase in order to maintain the equality with the RHS.

Cowboy Logic is filled with the bons mots of our favorite Texas legend, the oldest Jew in Texas who doesnt own real estate. Complementing his ageless (and outrageous) maxims organized thematically are original cartoons and illustrations by the brilliant John Callahan. For example: Always respect your superiors, if you have any Where theres a will, theres a lawyer A happy childhood is the worst possible preparation for life Trust me. Im a Jew. Ill hire good people Happiness is a moving target. Kinky is famous for his one-liners, and here are the best of them.

I felt the same way about the book as others did - it's a disappointment. 198 pages of one liners and cartoons. That said, it's my own fault, I didn't read the description and was expecting something about Friedman. So in a nutshell, if you're looking for something to read while going to the bathroom, this is fine.

This book is very funny. We read this book at a friend's house and really liked the book so thought we would get one for our house to finish reading. Would definately recomend this book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Cowboy Logic: The Wit and Wisdom of Kinky Friedman.......2006-11-03

A Texan relative once introduced an old friend of his to me. They passed what sounded to be reminiscences of theirs with enduring crinkly-eyed smiles and grins. After closing-off the seemingly off-handed encounter, my relative pointed out the covert subtlties of the preceding event as we walked away. The old-timer had begun with seemingly self-deprecating remarks -- wrapping these around hidden and ironic, good-natured teasing and delayed-action barbs: the lovable Texas Two-step. Old-timers will give you the "high sign" -- that little wiggle of the pointer finger as you pass each other's pick-up trucks on a country road. They acknowledge that you may be a fool and/or a king, but we may need to help each other down the road. Life is you and it is I and the daylight between you and I. This book is a Texas high sign.

2 out of 5 stars It was OK.......2006-08-16

I bought the book because I saw his interview on "60 minutes" and the man was hilarious. This book is very easy to read, has some interesting 1-liner and cartoons but it is OK, nothing too exciting. Most of the funny 1-liner was repeated in the "60 minutes" interview, so...watch the interview instead of spending the money to buy the book. Oh well...

jrock, ink. is an executive report on the energized Japanese rock scene today. It showcases 40 of the hottest names in jrock history with histories, reviews, and discographies, all in a stunning full-color package highlighted by original art and
photographs. Many of these artists have toured and released CDs in North America and are known for their
work on anime and movie soundtracks.

Josephine Yun is a freelance music and arts writer whose work has appeared in Baltimore City Paper, Johns Hopkins Magazine, and SIGNAL to NOISE. She has worked in a cafe, a public arts high school, an airport, a Japanese restaurant, a symphony hall, and as a case clerk, piano accompanist, and string teacher. In 2006, she was interviewed by BBC/PRI's "The World" for a segment featuring Japanese rock and jrock, ink.

"Lovingly written and gorgeously produced... the first book published in the United States to survey the delirious landscape of Japanese rock... This is a work of visual art, about some very visual artists." -- SFGate.com

"Stunningly elegant...witty...the first of its kind; an exciting first step..." -- Centigrade-J

"It's as if jrock, ink. itself were the work of that rare blend of talents that makes for a great band. Yun is front woman, with all the sass one would expect from a music critic for Baltimore's alternative weekly City Paper. Designer Yelena Zhavoronkova's brilliantly creative use of alternating margins and sparse, colored text not only gives the book a unique tone, it also makes nearly page-long paragraphs surprisingly easy to follow. It's all rounded out by artist Yana Moskaluk's full-page illustrations for each of the 40 bands summarized. This book is a must not only for the serious rocker or DJ. It's also invaluable for students of modern Japanese culture and music criticism alike." -- The Asian Reporter

This book is gorgeous in design and art but I felt it left a lot out. This book is written for those with little to no prior knowledge of J-rock and I don't recommend it to anyone seasoned in the genre, but for the wonderful illustrations of each music act.

4 out of 5 stars A decent introduction into the world of Jrock.......2006-07-14

I received this book as a gift. After reading the title, I instantly checked the bottom of list of bands mentioned to see if X JAPAN was there. To my satifaction they were. That gave me the feeling that this would be a decent book to say the least. Including X JAPAN proves that the author did their homework.

After reading it, I can honestly say that it is fairly good, especially for those that have no exposure to jrock or any of the earlier bands from the '80s. After reading the other reviews, I can agree with them about the major complaint being the section on Gackt. Being a huge Dear, I was a bit upset but at the same time Gackt has accomplished so much. Since this was not a biography, items were bound to be left out. I think it could have been written better.

The biggest suprise and joy for me were the sections on Due' le Quartz and Miyavi- more so Miyavi. The author remembering the huge impact DLQ had on the indie scene for such a brief period impressed me, others might not even remember them. The fact that she gave Miyavi his own section proves his increasing growth and finally his acceptance into the music scene as a solo artist. Miyavi is my favorite artist so seeing him included really made me squeel like a fangirl.

All in all, it is a fairly decen complilation. Nothing is perfect but it is good for anyone wanting to learn about the genre or for fellow jrock fans to refresh their memories and share their interest with friends.

5 out of 5 stars A 'must' for any alternative or indie world music fan who would better understand modern Japanese musicians.......2006-06-23

Imagine a geisha playing electric guitar, or a koto performer flipping the bird. Imagine a 3-piece high school band called Mr. Children whose long-term success allowed it to evolve from a school band to number 1 on the Japanese record charts. Imagine Japanese indie rock performer who mix punk elements with Japanese. Add a healthy dose of fun drawings throughout and you have a survey of Japanese pop rock culture not to be missed: a 'must' for any alternative or indie world music fan who would better understand modern Japanese musicians.

I agree a lot with Nikki.
I'm really dissappointed with this book. The images was colorfull, but some of them didn't even look anything like original people...
And was it me, or did Yun write incorrect info about Dir en grey? I mean, Dir en grey does NOT mean "two sides of a coin". I mean, it's a "GREY" in it. And it was like... "Yeah, Dir en grey is scary, and stuff. Kyo's voice is...special... And that's it". >_____ <;; I find a lot of more info and more interesting stuff at wikipedia.org, and that's for free.
Okay, good, L'Arc~en~Ciel is a GREAT band, but it seemed like it was the only band she wrote positive stuff about x__X; But they're already very popular. Why not try to get deeper into other bands and make them intresting?
And what was that about Gackt? ...She missed too much there.

And Yun sorta left out a lot of important things about the bands. It's not like it was an profile book or anything, but she could've written something about the members of the band. I'm sure newbies won't know the difference between j-rockers dressed up like girls and those who are actually girls.

If you're new to j-rock and visual kei, this book might be something. But if you're like me, who knows where to get good information and already knows the lot, use your money on something else!

                            1 out of 5 stars A let-down.......2005-10-31

I pre-ordered this book, thinking that it would be what it was touted as- a "concise report." I thought it would be filled with insight and interviews or at least be a basic reference book of major bands.

Unfortunately, it is anything but. Author Josephine Yun devotes two to four pages to each band- but one or three of them is stylized artwork that makes you feel like you're reading a women's magazine instead of a book. The content of the book is limited to the name of the band, the members, and some random tidbit that you could easily find by Googling the band. I don't think that the author has listened to more than one song by each artist except for the two bands she admits to listening to. Most often she focuses on one surface aspect of the band, such as Psycho le Cemu's costumes or the fact that Dir en grey's vocalist, Kyo, dislikes being called "cute." She does not delve deeply into the music or history on the bands, and quickly dismisses what she does not personally like, putting off readers who might have otherwise given a band a chance. It reads like a magazine blurb, small words and hype with bright colors.

I find it highly disappointing that someone with such a limited scope of the music scene and an amateur looking website (which lacks the content of many fan run sites) was chosen to create what could have been an excellent project. You really could find out much more about a band by joining a Livejournal community- and you could do that for free.

Overall, the presentation is nice, but, as she has uncharitably describes some of the bands contained within- It lacks substance and is all about the look.

                              Book Description

Games figured prominently in the myths of North American Indian tribes, and also in their ceremonies for bringing rain and fertility and combating misfortune. In his classic study, originally published in 1907 as a report of the Bureau of American Ethnology, Stewart Culin divided the games played by Indian men and women into two general types.

Volume 1 of this Bison Books edition takes up games of chance, involving guessing and throwing dice. Culin was able to show that the games of North American tribes were remarkably similar in method and purpose. He found that games using dice of various materials—wood, cane, bone, animal teeth, fruit stones—existed among 130 tribes belonging to 30 linguistic groups. The games are described in detail in this volume, and so are the popular guessing games drawing on sticks and wooden disks and involving hidden objects.

Volume 2 is just as absorbing in its elaboration of skills like archery and games like snow-snake, in which darts or javelins were hurled over snow or ice. Played throughout the continent north of Mexico were the hoop and pole game and its miniature, solitaire form called ring and pin, here illustrated. With equal authority Culin discusses ball games: racket, shinny, football, and hot ball. He includes accounts of "minor amusements": shuttlecock, tipcat, quoits, popgun, bean shooter, and cat's cradle.

Originally published in 1907, Stewart Culin's comprehensive work reveals a side of American Indian culture still only rarely shown. An experienced observer, Culin was curator of ethnology at the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences and the author of books about games in other cultures.

From the perspective of a city planner representing a city considering the "opportunity" of legalized gambling, I had searched for a book that comprehensively tackled the subject from both sides of the difficult issue. This is the first such book that effectively meets that goal. Heretofore, much of what I had read had a particularly biased approach that failed to fairly represent the pros and cons of legalized gambling. This book is a good start, but should be complemented with additional readings and up to date statistics and anecdotes.

                                Book Description

This is the second in a series of books intended to review and evaluate the most popular and influential explanations for gambling and the many research studies that have been conducted to confirm or refute them. This book focuses on the contributions of specialists in the social sciences, most of whom are convinced that gambling is a consequence of the social or subcultural environment in which the gambler lives. To further the understanding of why people gamble, investigators went to places where gambling occurred and spent time among and interacted with the gamblers. Some attended Gamblers Anonymous meetings and others became participant observers in gambling establishments by becoming employed as roulette croupiers or card dealers. Topics covered include the gambler's point of view, the researcher's point of view, social structure, economics, statistical tests of earlier ideas, special populations, "armchair" theories, gambling and the public, problem correlates, and risk factors. In addition, a critique of the qualitative and quantitative studies involving survey research methods and interview research methods is given that provides theoretical explanations for why people gamble. Numerous results from geographical surveys are provided, as well as tables that examine the research of problem gambling.

If you like most of us receive your news primarily through television you need to read Liz Trotta's book Fighting for Air. She was present at the transformation of TV news from a reportorial medium to an editorializing, prostelytizing one. Trotta too often was a lone voice for truth in reporting amidst a wilderness of ratings, liberal bias and pretty talking heads. She recounts the ups and downs of a traumatic career that took her from battleground to political campaign and back again. Few incidents of significance occurred in the two plus decades that Liz has covered the world that she has not seen and reported on. Her greatest contribution - in this era of finally revealing the shallow nature of TV news - is that some people are able to look beyone the surface and see what is really important.
This book is a must-read for all concerned with current affairs and with how the media deliberately attempts to shape your thinking. Buy it and send it to a friend after you finish. Thanks to Liz Trotta for being ahead of her time.

                                        Book Description

Accessibility is about making web sites that do not exclude people with visual, aural, or physical disabilities. This book will enable web professionals to create or retrofit accessible web sites quickly and easily. It is a practical book; the accessibility techniques outlined within are illustrated with real world examples from live sites, demonstrating that accessibility is not the enemy of great visual design.

                                        This book includes:
                                        * Practical techniques for developing completely accessible web sites
                                        * Detailed discussion of the legal requirements of Section 508, UK, European, Australian, and Japanese legislation

The GlassHaus "Constructing Accessible Web Sites" book has been a great find. I began working to build sites and applications for use in Web browsers that had to be used by individuals with disabilities in 1997. Over these years I picked up a lot of hard won knowledge and experience, but have never run across a resource that fully backed what I had gathered. The GlasHaus Accessibility book not only echoes what I have learned, but has provided new insights to improve upon what I already have. The best part of this book is that I can point others to it and I am assured they will be able to build an accessible site or Web applications that can meet high standards.

Many folks think accessibility is a great inconvenience, but it takes a little thinking and planning to do it right from the beginning. Having a great resource at hand makes the process a cake walk. Not only are the processes and guides helpful for creating sites that are accessible for those that are disabled these steps outlined also make the information in the site future ready. Sites that are accessible are much easier to use with a handheld PDA device or from even a cell phone browser. Accessibility for everybody in more situations improves with structuring the information properly, which is all making Web enabled information really requires to get it ready to be consumed. Is your information ready to be consumed by everybody?

Two new words have joined the vocabulary of web designers in recent years - usability and accessibility. You will often come across them used in tandem.

Usability really became an issue when Jacob Nielsen infamously denounced Flash as 99% bad. Accessibility became a priority for web developers working on government projects after Section 508 was brought into law in the United States.

Accessibility became an issue in Australia during Maguire vs SOCOG in 1999, when a blind man filed a complaint with the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) that neither Olympic Games tickets purchasing information nor the souvenir programme were available in Braille. Most importantly he alleged that the SOCOG website was not accessible, and to make it so would have been well within budget. SOCOG was found to have discriminated against the complainant and damages were awarded against the organization.

Accessibility is now a civil rights issue. It is also not that difficult to implement on a website, once you learn how it can be done. This excellent book, Constructing Accessible Web Sites, teaches you all that and more. It is the first on its subject, and will not be the last, but it is damned a good beginning.

All eight co-authors have been pioneers in the field of accessibility, and Glasshaus deserves praise for having assembled such a team. They cover more than website accessibility - their expertise extends to the accessibility of web design tools themselves. An apt reminder that the web is as much about reading as writing, for writers as much as readers, a real medium of two-way communication.

All websites can now be made accessible to varying degrees, even Flash websites since Flash MX, as Macromedia Senior Product Manager for Accessibility Bob Regan demonstrates in Chapter 10. So there are no excuses for failing to add increased accessibility, and usability for that matter, to that new project you are just about to commence.

Ensure you have a copy of Constructing Accessible Web Sites at hand when you begin. And also take a look at another equally essential reference on the subject due out any day now, Joe Clark's Building Accessible Websites. Accessibility is the newest and most necessary website building skill. There are no excuses now.

                                        5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book.......2002-09-13

Of the books and resources that I've read on accessible web sites, this is by far the best - especially from a UK perspective.

The main UK legislation that specifically mentions web sites and accessibility comes into force in October 2004 which, at the time of writing this, is still over two years away. This means that there isn't a great deal of information and certainly no legal cases that we can draw on from our country, so we have to look elsewhere to see what is happening.

This book benefits in that, although it does cover Section 508 and other already in place legislation, it also gives a great all round understanding of the topic, and is very easy to read. Having chapters written by different authors means that you get a far greater depth of experience and information, which can only benefit the reader.

If you're going to buy one book on accessible web sites, this should be at the top of your shopping list.

                                        5 out of 5 stars What a great book.......2002-09-11

I don't usually come it the "lyrical type", but to find such a worthwhile book on such a worthwhile topic is a breath of fresh air!

Above all else, it offers practical advice on how to actually do the right thing. Unlike certain titles with animals on their covers, there's more here than just reams and reams of tables containing cut-and-pastes from the man pages on the subject.

It's also of a nice size. (I know that would be no recommendation, if the book didn't actually teach you anything, but it does - and you don't feel intimidated, like you can when you pick up some dirty great Red tome from a Certain OtherPublisher.) You feel as if the subject is managable. Knowable. It may be just me, but if a book is smaller than my own head, I generally feel that there's an outside chance I may be able to fit the contents inside my own skull!

I'll have to keep an eye open for these blue things... they're quite good.
