Customer Reviews:
A good reference book........1999-08-02
Pretty good for the simple reason that it delivers on its promise. It has summary descriptions of many topics like "Charitable Remainder Trusts" and then a visual aide, then footnotes and details. It also has various charts, comparisons of plans, and quotes. Helpful, if a summary is what you need, but not recommended if you need in-depth details, case studies, or if you want an entertaining read.

This book provides important and timely insights into the changing policy process in the area of equal opportunities. The authors track the contributions of member states and pressure groups to EU policy formation, and analyze the impacts of European legislation on gender issues in law and practice. By combining detailed analysis of the EU policy-making framework with national case-studies, the book illustrates how different policy styles and institutional settings have shaped equality policy and influence implementation.

Book Description
Bob and Ray's whimsically ridiculous dialogues and subtly satirical glances at the world have regaled audiences for fifty years -- on local and network radio and television, in movies and commercials, on Broadway and at Carnegie Hall, and in three delightful books. In an exclusive performance of skits from their third book, these beloved humorists take you into their world of restrained craziness and of gentle and relentless satire. 2 cassettes.
Customer Reviews:
Last Laughs.......2007-08-17
In a broadcast studio, a man in the audience introduces himself as "one of the very few people in America with a name that is completely unpronounceable", spelled W-W-Q-L-C-W. "I'd like to say hello to my brother on your program, but I don't know how to pronounce his name, either."
Consumer affairs expert Hoyt Netley recommends a child's tricycle from Denmark on account of its rounded edges, plus the gunpowder-fueled rocket engine that eliminates the need for dangerous pedals. "The child just lights a fuse when he's ready to ride."
Bob and Ray. How I miss those guys. This 1985 collection of sketches was their last published work before Ray's death in 1990, and catches them just about wrapping up their comedy career. Even though it is a half-step below their earlier two books in terms of consistent excellence, there's enough good moments in here to sustain many of today's comics over an entire career.
There's another episode of "Tippy The Wonder Dog" and a new visit to "The Hobby Hut", where host Neil Clummer meets a man who collects numbers held by people who wait in line. Two doctors exchange rote platitudes about patient confidentiality until they repeat each other's lines.
The accent on newer material is a drawback. By 1985, Bob & Ray were reworking old concepts rather than trotting out new ones with the boldness they displayed in the 1960s and 1970s. As sharp and witty as they were, there was also a structural element to Bob & Ray's best comedy, Monty Pythonish logic-stretching, which simply doesn't come off as well in a series of sketches of a man being interviewed, which is what you have here.
The newer ideas they did use, like the soap opera "Garish Summit" (a couple of episodes from which appear here) annoyed some older fans who remembered the goofier antics of "Mary Backstayge, Noble Wife". "Garish Summit" was funny, though, and so is regular sports announcer Biff Burns' interview with champion low-jumper Big Steve Wurbler, who explains why standing atop a cliff and jumping should be an Olympic sport.
"In high jumping, you can strain a muscle or hurt yourself on the way up," Big Steve explains. "But in low jumping, you only have to worry about what happens to you on the way down."
One thing "New! Improved!" has over the earlier B&R collections is the audio version that came out the following year, which shows the two men in fine form giving even the weaker material in this collection a fresh life. Bob & Ray had a habit of surprising you just when you thought you had them figured out; their like won't be seen again for a long while.
Delightfully absurd.......2001-08-07
A work of off-kilter genius from Bob and Ray, surreal comedy pioneers. From "small village endocrinologist Engelbretzen" to the seedy soap opera Garish Summit, it's one loopy deadpan laugh riot. The cheesy, mock-melodramatic music adds to the fun. Hilarious running gags, idiotic talk show guests, crackpot pseudo-experts, bizarre mini-dramas, pathetic losers we can simultaneously sympathize with and deride--the "New! Improved! Bob and Ray Book" is first-class lunacy.
How often do you find humor so insanely funny that you can't resist smirking and chuckling in public places as you remember your favorite lines? This is that funny. A great gift idea for anybody who likes warped humor that's both sophisticated and moronic at the same time.
Bob and Ray in print - almost as funny as hearing them........1999-08-05
Approach this small book as a collection of comedy routines written for a Bob and Ray broadcast; while reading it, longtime fans will probably hear in their minds the duo's voices and inflections. And this book is even more fun when reading along with the recording of Bob and Ray themselves reading the routines. But whatever the circumstances, this is a good, and funny, introduction to Bob and Ray's work. And knowing that this was one of their last works together makes one realize how remarkable their comedy was.
New! Improved! Bob and Ray - as funny as ever........1999-08-05
Here are Bob and Ray on tape again, late in their career but still the funniest duo on, and off, radio. Here they're reading (with sound effects) from their book - which is more like a collection of radio scripts; it's a good introduction to their work, and longtime listeners will find their material as fresh and funny as always. And while some hardcore fans may miss the unique "live radio" quality that Bob and Ray had, they're every bit as funny as in any of their earlier work. The running gag about walnut pickers is reason enough to buy this, as is the grammar lesson. It's also fun to read along while listening to the tape, so get the book as well. Bob and Ray are a reminder that enduring comedy needn't be offensive.
Book Description
Long before Garth Brooks, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, and The Dixie Chicks, the original pioneers of country music--The Carter Family, Vernon Dalhart, The Monroe Brothers, The Louvin Brothers, and others--paved the way for future country artists, influencing musicians for generations to come. Now for the first time, country music authority Charles K. Wolfe gathers together his profiles of 50 legends of country music. Classic Country includes such Hall of Famers as the father of bluegrass Bill Monroe, honky tonker Lefty Frizzell, and queen of country music Kitty Wells, as well as lesser-known but equally important artists like DeFord Bailey, first African-American star of the Grand Ole Opry, the mysterious Seven Foot Dilly, and the reclusive songwriter Arthur Q. Smith. Wolfe also offers portraits of recent artists who perform in the classic country style, such as Doc Watson, The Freight Hoppers, Hazel and Alice, and The Statler Brothers.
Based on the author's personal interviews with the musicians and those who knew them, these profiles present colorful anecdotes and little-known facts behind the songs. Here you will read how Lefty Frizzell's hit "I Love You, I'll Prove It a Thousand Ways" started off as a love letter to his wife while he was in jail at age 19. And how Roy Acuff was so popular that during the latter days of World War II, Japanese soldiers would try to psyche out American Marines by yelling taunts like "To hell with Franklin Roosevelt! To hell with Babe Ruth! To hell with Roy Acuff!" Much more than a collection of mini-biographies, this engaging collection also provides unique insights into the history of the recording and broadcast industry that are sure to fascinate not only fans and scholars of country and bluegrass music, but anyone interested in the roots of American popular music.

Profiles of fifty selected country legends.......2001-03-04
Profiles of fifty selected country legends accompany dozens of rare photos in a presentation which charts the Monroe Brothers, Louvin Brothers, and those who paved the way for future country artists. From bluegrass artists to country vocalists, Classic Country provides fine documentation of many lesser-known but important figureheads.

Book Description
From the glittering debauched nights of 1980s Hollywood ("Escape from Houdini Mountain") to the festering bowels of New York's Lower East Side ("Must Have Been Love"), these 23 mind-bending tales chronicle a young woman's quest for romantic adventure.
Customer Reviews:
LIFE ON THE WILD SIDE!.......2002-10-13
Take a spin in the fast lane with the one and only Pleasant Gehman. This lady rocks (so we won't have to). Woman has lived through quite a bit and lived to write about it--and we get it all: the good and the bad. What makes her stand out as a writer is her own, very unique way of putting the word down. Might remind some of Henry Miller, Jeri Cain Rossi, or even Charles Bukowski--by that I mean she bares her heart and soul and stays away from the phony type of writing (one might find in mags like The New Yorker and others like it.) You get the whole picture: warts and all. That makes her human in this reader's eyes--and we dig the hell out of her for it.
Pleasant Gehman's Hollywood.......2001-06-26
I love this woman's unique take on Tinsel Town and L.A. in general. Once you start reading you won't be able to put it down. Read it from cover to cover in a single sitting. This is honest writing, screams from the gut. You get it all because the lady has the smarts and talent and backbone to give you the truth: the good, the bad and the hilarious. She knows life is that and more because she has lived through it. Enjoy the laughter when you can, she seems to say, and do the best that you can do to get through the less than pleasant moments (like heartbreak and other disappointments) that all of us sometimes find ourselves having to deal with. My only complaint is that she does not have enough books out there! I would like to see Pleasant write a longer work, maybe a novel or her memoirs. I put her up there with the best of them like Carson McCullers, Sylvia Plath, Unica Zurn, Dan Fante, Charles Bukowski, John O'Brien, Nathanael West, Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, et al. Can't wait for her next book.
Clowns and Drag Queens and Preachers, OH MY!.......2001-05-30
Escape From Houdini Mountain is a dizzing joyride of autobiographical fiction from a different kind of L.A. Woman. Spun from her experiences in the L.A. underground, the stories are infectiously entertaining. Pleasant's eye for the human condition is pristine. Her heart shines as she revels in a carnival of delicately drawn characters. Some are sad, some sick, some brilliant, but in Pleasant's world they are all appreciated equally. Ultimately this book, for all it's wildly funny tales, is an evolved praising of feminine beauty and it's power in a world gone mad.
Several nights' worth of fun!.......2000-09-30
Ms. Gehman's stories of growing up in LA range from the tender ("Vet Mem") to the bizarre ("Beauty From Within"--a tale about eating make-up!) to hilarious ("Wine Me, Dine Me, Soixant-Neuf Me") but the writing is solid and fun to read. This is a collection I'll enjoy sharing with my best girlfriends, and will come back to again and again!
Book Description
NBC’s Emmy award-winning hit series Law & Order is television’s longest-running drama. Like the series, Law & Order: Crime Scenes walks a thin line between reality and fantasy, presenting gritty crime scene photographs. Producer Dick Wolf discusses how he came up with the idea for the crime drama and describes each of the years’ main characters, accompanied by pictures. Aficionados will particularly delight in Wolf’s revelations about the characters’ personal lives. A postmortem commentary by photographer Jessica Burstein features thumbnails of the pictures, noting which episode each is from, with anecdotal information, and a brief synopsis of the crime scene.
Customer Reviews:
For Die Hards.......2005-01-25
I got this book for my husband as a birthday present. We religiously watch all the Law & Order episodes, (rock on tnt and usa!) This book does contain some gore, but if you are a fanatic of the show, you will love this book! The book is separated into 3 sections. Each section is great in it's own way. Very well done and put together. Bravo!
Blessings to Jerry Orbach.
Washington reviewer said it all!.......2004-10-16
I try to stray away from other reviews, keeping my fingers crossed that if, by chance, we share the same thoughts, it's just coincidental. Well, I erred and read a review from Andrew Rogers and I must agree with everything that he said.
Dick Wolf's very informative photographic essay of the long-running NBC institution is for the fan and non-fan alike. It gives all the intricacies of television production, as well as showcases the actors that respectively starred in the show over the past fourteen years.
When I saw this one on the shelf of a local bookstore, I knew that it had to be mine. Just like the series it profiles, the book is worthy of awards for its striking black and white photography.
It also needs to be in the home of everyone that appreciates Wolf's masterpiece.
Now, I can't wait for the Special Victims Unit edition!
Not a coffee table book, maybe, but great for fans.......2004-05-25
"Law & Order" is becoming the British Empire of TV franchises: the sun never sets upon it. At any given moment, somewhere in the world, some station is probably broadcasting an episode of one of the three L&O series. If you're one of the many people who consider this a Good Thing, "Law & Order: Crime Scenes" is a book for you.
Much of the book is taken up by "crime scene" photos from the original "Law & Order" series. These photos not only illustrate the care taken by the show's actors and technicians, but are themselves often featured in the program. Serious fans will thus have fun playing "Name That Episode" with these images. While you know they're all staged, many of these photos are nevertheless rather gory and blood-spattered, and some are downright gruesome. That's why I doubt this book will be left out on the coffee table when the grandparents visit. Unless, of course, Grandma's an L&O fan too.
While the photos themselves are interesting (and one, at least, is surprisingly moving: the photo of Claire Kincaid [Jill Hennessy] "dead" in her car following the accident that took her out of the program), I was more intrigued by the sections that bookend them. The last part of the book consists of thumbnail biographies of L&O's principal characters. From Max Greevey and Paul Robinette all the way to Ed Green and DA Arthur Branch, series creator Dick Wolf not only explains their history on the show, but also why they were created, why they left (in real life and "TV life"), and how they progressed. While he doesn't answer any questions about a Jack-Claire affair, he does at least provide an explanation for Serena Southerlyn's changing dress and hairstyles from season to season.
On the front end, Wolf's introduction includes an excellent discussion of how the show was created, what he set out to do, and how well he thinks he's achieved it. This is followed by an in-depth look at the process of creating the "teaser," the two scenes between the initial fade-in ("In the criminal justice system...") and the opening credits. Everyone involved, from the techs to the actors to the real NYPD officers monitoring things and even the corpse herself, get a chance to speak about their role in the process. It's a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at how a television production happens.
This book isn't really a viewers' guide to the show, and contains no episode summaries or anything like that. But many hard-core fans will no doubt get a lot out of it anyway. And even people interested in knowing how a series TV production goes from script to screen will probably enjoy the experience too.
Delectable Corpora Delicti.......2003-11-13
This book is everything I expected and more. Clear, fascinating text describes the show's origins, and how it is put together from its story-driven framework, to its ever-evolving cast of characters. Excellent profiles on those in front of and behind the scenes; they clearly have a formula that works. I found the section delineating the show's plot structure especially interesting. The crime scene photographs are top notch as well. Graphic, yes, but expertly composed and realistic. Jessica Burstein (the co-writer and photographer) is a true artist. This book is a must have for all Law & Order fans!
Another One.......2003-10-23
As I turned the first page in this book I was a bit surprised. No amazing things we never knew of anything. However, I did find the Post Mortem interesting.
Book Description
Pro Scalable .NET 2.0 Application Designs explains how to plan and implement .NET 2.0 applications. It addresses platform, hosting, and database requirements, as well as architectural design techniques that can be used to create the application itself. For example, the book illustrates a comparison between two models, the "traditional" and the "new" SOA, to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each. This book also makes use of the newest version of Web Services Enhancements (WSE 3.0), ensuring you have access to the latest Microsoft standards and advice.
Customer Reviews:
A good first book about scalable applications.......2006-04-23
This book covers all the process to make a scalable application in .net world. It explains all about software and hardware issues. It is written in a easy English and the examples are in VB.net (I had preferred in C#). It covers lots of things in .net: objects, Enterprise Library, COM+, SOA, SQL Server, IIS, Clustering and NLB, W2000 and W2003 server... At the beginning of the chapters it introduces a little theory about the content, and later it goes to develop in .net.
The language chosen for the examples and not going too deeply in some issues, like SOA, is just what i can say bad about it. And perhaps it shouldn't have been titled as 2.0. I miss that they haven't talk about some 2.0 features and develop in a 1.1 way.
I should definitely recommend it.
An insider's book, although a useful one.......2006-04-21
Pro Scalable .NET 2.0 Application Designs (PSNAD), by Rickard Redler and Joachim Rossberg, is an insider's book. It assumes that you already know almost everything you might want to know about Microsoft products. For example, page 37 namedrops "MSMQ" while page 451 tells you a little about it, if you didn't already know and you do persist that far.
Although PSNAD topics are mostly serious, the tone is chatty. A large number of sentences start with "Don Box says." Most of the readers who want to know what Don Box says will have bought one of his books; Amazon sells at least four of them. Chapter 1 of PSNAD is puffed out with an apparently obligatory introduction to diagramming, but the rest of the book mercifully downplays diagrams in favor of information.
What this reader wanted to know was when to use Web services and when to use other techniques for distributed applications. Chapter 6 of PSNAD gives clear answers to this question in a page and a half, something no other current book provides. That alone was worth the price of admission.
Fine book.......2006-01-03
A 4 stars book. I give 5 because the 1st reader gave only 2 stars to bring it up to 4 stars :)
Good overview for architects.......2005-11-27
I found the book useful for my daily work. It shows me the different aspects to take into account when designing an enterprise application on .net.
Really good coverage on the server family and also on WSE -I give it 4 stars.
I was able to download the source code which shows an idea of how to implement the different aspects of an EA. (Guess the previous reviewer's 404 was a one day problem? )
Good book. But no sample project download as they declared... .......2005-11-16
The book is very good, it provides a big picture of all the aspects of Enterprise .NET application architecture design and development. At the end of this book, it says:" To download the complete test application, please visit www.apress.com", I realized that I might never be able to download the code. And when I went to apress.com, it just proved what I thought was not wrong: I just couldn't download the sample test project code at all: "404 Error. The requested page is not available."
I seriously doubt they have a sample project to download as they said.
