Book Description
Until now there were no published analyses of the recent solvency work conducted in Europe, specifically the risk categories proposed by the International Actuarial Association (IAA). Answering the insurance industry's demand in the wake of the EU Solvency II project, Solvency: Models, Assessment and Regulation provides a concrete summary and review of solvency and inspires additional work in the field. Following an introduction to the concept, the first section of the book provides a historical review of solvency, detailing solvency regulation and accounting within the EU. A review of the steps leading to Solvency II looks at accounting, supervision, the actuarial field, the first phase of Solvency II, international approaches to banking, and the solvency systems of 12 major nations. The second section explores the current basis for solvency modeling, focusing on the valuation of assets and liabilities, dependency and various conservative approaches, as well as a baseline and benchmark approach. This section also provides examples of risk structure and the effects of diversification. The final section discusses groups and internal modeling as it relates to EU Solvency II. It addresses insurance groups, financial conglomerates, reinsurance, the importance of internal modeling and stress testing, and the current state of the second phase of EU Solvency II.

Customer Reviews:
good text from a teacher's point of view.......2006-05-31
I liked this text and might adopt it for my classes. Economics is not an easy subject but Prof. McEachern's text is clearly written. The end of chapter summary of key ideas help to clarify what the chapter was about. The problems and exercises are rigorous, but within reach of anyone who has had algebra.
The case studies bring a real world aspect to the material.
Horrible!.......2000-12-17
This book is terrible. The author is for one thing extremely dull. Worst though is the questions he expects you to answer at the end of most chapters. The examples he gives while reading the chapter are totally different from the questions he asks at the end of the chapters. As a result of this you are left asking yourself, when the hell did we do this?????? To make matters worse their is no answer key to any of this, so even if you attempt to answer the questions, you will never even know if you did them right or not! Stay away from this book if possible, take a teacher who uses another book, because this book is very poor. In my class, probably half dropped because of this!
compelling easy-to-understand book.......1999-10-29
This book is just wonderful because while you read it, the author gives you illustrative examples whereby you understand general policies and ideologies within the economy. It is just a five and odd star winner!!

Book Description
Outstanding for their variety and degree of innovation, Mozart's piano concertos reflect his genius as a composer. He wrote the first of these precocious works in 1767, when he was only 11. Piano concertos continued to be a lifelong preoccupation for the composer, and these formative pieces foreshadow the even greater works to come.

Book Description
How did average Romans live out each year, conduct their family life, rear and educate their children? What about slaves in the household? How did people enjoy themselves--did they travel or go to the theater? And, how were those famed gladiators trained? From a wide variety of sources--writers, inscriptions, papyri, mosaics, stones, even graffiti--the answers to these question come into sharp relief. "By far the best single volume on the subject."--The Guardian.
Customer Reviews:
A detailed, authoritative account of Roman life.......2005-01-20
Being on a break from university for almost two months, I decided to create for myself some foundation in non-fiction works. Moving on from Soviet/Stalinist history, I thought it would be necessary to hearken back to the ancients: Greece, Rome, and even Egypt. I started with Rome. One of the first books I read was Balsdon's "Life and Leisure in Ancient Rome" and it was certainly no mistake.
This reasonably short history (which is not unsuprising, considering how little we really know of ancient empires - they unfortunately didn't have the luxury of the printing press or film) covers every conceivable aspect of an (almost exclusively) upper class Roman's life. From the chronological order of his day, which is confusing to the extreme; to the meals they eat; to, most interestingly, the details of gladiatorial games and chariot races, there is no lack of information - I was, indeed, suprised when I found no chapter on a Roman's bathroom etiquette or bed-making techniques, considering the great detail enclosed. Unfortunately for the casual reader or history buff, Baldson often goes into what is nothing short of excruciating detail when illustrating a simple point. He uses far too many anecdotes and they are more often than not jarring in the extreme and serve no useful purpose, other than taking up one paragraph in ten. However, every now and then, there is a touching or thought provoking example, which Balsdon deserves praise for including.
Oddly enough, for a historian writing a very specific and not too exciting history, Baldson injects a very sharp, very British, sense of humour, ironic and sometimes black. These are rare occasions, but memorable.
There is a comprehensive, if somewhat dated, bibliography, and very useful maps at the tail end of the book.
Baldson has done a truly epic amount of research concerning a most un-epic subject matter. As such, this book is an authoritative edition. For anyone interested in the details of Roman history, this book is extremely useful and highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Instruction Manual.......2006-10-10
I was looking for a book that I could use to provide non-technical students with basic skills. This book was just what I was looking for and helped me plan out my class. I like the way the book is divided into sections that gradually build. Some information is repeated but this helps students to understand the material. Overall a great book if you want to learn computer basics.
Excellent book for the reason it was written.......2006-08-28
I have been teaching people of all ages how to use (including all versions of Windows and Office) and build computers for over 6 years now. I just decided to get a Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology and was told that I needed to pass the IC3 exams as an introductory course. Thinking that I could probably pass the exams in my sleep, I ordered this book to look over the material anyway just to make sure that I wasn't being overconfident. I learned a couple of obscure things that I hadn't known before and I'm only 1/2 way through the book. It was worth it to me (bought it used).
This book was written assuming that the person reading it knows virtually nothing about how to use Windows or Office. Why does it concentrate on products from Microsoft? Because that is what the IC3 exam will cover. Simple as that - the book prepares you for the exam.
The book does not talk over a person's head - it is plainly written with great examples. Lots of color pictures along the way to illustrate key points too. My only complaint is that it assumes you are part of a class that is teacher lead - which is a problem if you are home-studying like I am. There's no answer key to the questions then, but you should be able to figure out the correct answer as it lets you know which part of the chapter to look in for the answer.
WARNING: This book SUCKS! Do NOT take this course!!!.......2006-04-12
???Terrible. Absolutely terrible. DO NOT BUY! In this day and age, any person between the ages of 13 and 60 will be quite familiar with all of the concepts discussed in this book. Few people need to be taught how to delete a file or create a word document. I also found the class that I bought this book for to be incredibly boring. It was almost torture because everyone in the class knew all of the concepts we were being taught, but we all had to take the class anyway because there was no way to place out of the course.
???Another major problem with this book was that it's extremely biased towards Microsoft. I fully understand that Microsoft has a monopoly on Information Systems Technology, but that doesn't mean that their software is the only software someone would ever want to use. I use Linux as my operating system, and this book is ignorant of Linux and its users. Some of the excercises we were assigned could only be completed on a Windows computer or required Microsoft Office, and that was very cumbersome. Apparently the authors of this book do not realize that Microsoft does not make Microsoft Office for Linux (surprise, surprise).
???If you know nothing about computers and plan only on using Windows computers, this book would probably be right for you. If you have enough computing skills to navigate to this web page and read this review (and obviously you do), AVOID THIS BOOK AND ANY CLASSES THAT USE IT LIKE THE PLAGUE!!!
