Book Description

Updated to include the very latest information on the legal guidelines you must follow under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

How many managers have stalled their own careers by hiring the wrong person? Too many.

The most common mistake is believing that if a person can do the job, the person is a good hire. Actually, there are three broad areas that must be probed thoroughly to make the best decision.

* Is the candidate able to do the job?
* Is the candidate willing to do the job?
* And is the candidate going to be manageable?

In Hiring the Best, over 400 questions thoroughly probe these areas and give you the necessary material for the perfect choice. The updated fourth edition of this proven management tool also features an extensive review of the pros and cons of hiring temporary workers, part-time employees, consultants, and independent contractors.

5 out of 5 stars Nine Years of Use And Nine Years of Success.......2007-01-15

I have been using Martin Yate's "Hiring the Best" since the late 1990s. This is an excellent reference book for human resource departments, hiring managers, and, also, for those in-transition. I refer to the book when hiring key employees and I encourage those who work for me to use it for interview preparation.

Yates provides a review of situational, personality profile, stress, and behavioral interviewing approaches; knock-out questions; and over 200 questions that will be useful in assessing ability, willingness, and manageability.

Hiring capable, motivated people is considered to be the most important management task. A poor decision results in a whole host of negative outcomes including lost time, expense, poor morale, and, possibly, irreversible negative outcomes. "Hiring the Best" will serve you well when filling open positions in the private, public, or the social sector.

4 out of 5 stars Good Resource for gaining broad perspective on Hiring.......2006-06-30

This book if full of helpful information and is organized in a way that makes it easy to use for reference purposes. Give it a once through and then shelve it for reference purposes. This one is worth having in your management collection.

4 out of 5 stars Basics on how to hire.......2006-02-10

Any manager with hiring authority knows that selecting the "right" candidate for any position is a nerve-wracking task. Professional processes can help you screen, interview and review, but the final choice is often as much art as science. Author Martin Yate's basic book can help inexperienced managers hire effectively, although this useful primer on interviewing and hiring is a little wordy. Yates provides great detail about key steps, such as when to schedule a phone interview, what to ask and how to conduct an interview. He even provides numerous sample questions for each major job category, from entry level to management. Is it a little too basic? Perhaps for some, but we recommend it for new managers who are inexperienced at hiring. Although this book covers the fundamentals of hiring, it can't guarantee that you'll make the right choice every time. Then again, that book probably hasn't been written.

5 out of 5 stars If You Hire, This Is A MUST Read.......2005-08-21

Like many small business people, I was a complete bozo at hiring for many years. Fortunately, at some point I woke up to that fact and decided to educate myself. I took classes, read books and did everything I could to become a skilled interviewer. Without question, one of the most helpful tools to escaping Bozoland was this book. Although I am now a freelance business consultant and have no employees of my own, I frequently assist my clients with their own hiring processes, and in so doing I still refer extensively to Martin Yate's excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on hiring & interviewing.......2005-06-27

This is an extremely well written and very useful book on hiring techniques and methods. The author analyzes all aspects of the hiring process beginning with the different types of resumes and when each type is used; what flags to look for and how to evaluate an applicant's overall resume. Chapter five focuses on short-listing through a `phoner' while the subsequent chapters are devoted to interviewing techniques and the science of asking questions.

The author introduces four different interviewing techniques - Situational; personality profile; stress; and & behavioral - and also gives a very useful and informative analysis of the different types of questions that can be asked in a hiring interview like half-right reflexives; hamburger-helper questions; and question layering. In the following chapters, the author focuses on evaluating the candidate's ability and willingness to do the job as well as manageability. The questions and the author's commentary on what to look for and red flags in an applicant's answer are informative, highly usable, and extremely useful. These are not your 'standard' interview questions (though there are some pretty standard questions included). They are well formulated and clever probes into the applicant's skills, knowledge, personality, and background.

The rest of the book is devoted to functional areas with a chapter devoted to clerical, management, sales, contingency workers and law hires. Again, I found the advice and suggestions relevant and informative. In formulating the hundreds of question suggestions scattered throughout the book, the author has given a lot of thought to the qualities, experiences, and areas of concern that hiring managers and HR people focus on.

This is the first book I have read in a long while that literally had me laughing out loud! My husband can hardly wait to read it, after listening to me giggling and laughing loudly until tears came to my eyes. This book is only 96 pages, but it is filled with hilarious slap stick humor, based on believable everyday experiences!

You can't help but visualize the events as you read them. Curt Brummett is a true story teller. If you want a real laugh, read this book.

I'm disappointed that his other books are out of print, as I was looking forward to obtaining them to have a few more laughs!

5 out of 5 stars Classic of its Kind.......2007-02-07

This was the 3rd and final volume of this remarkable series. With the demise of so many fine old regimental bands from the British army, Gordon Turner with help from Kneller Hall, the army school of music, attempted to chronicle the fascinating history of these bands. Included are many fine photos, past and present. Extensive band histories are referenced throughout, with listings of bandmasters and directors of music, as well as regimental music played, and just general info. of importance. Many fine, rich stories are to be found here. The emphasis of this volume was on the bands of the Light Division and the Irish Regiments. Many others are included as well. All have colorful histories included with many references to bands and units long gone from the British army list. Included is a special CD played by the Band of the Royal Signals Corps which includes many of the regimental music listed in this work. The cover is a recent picture of the Band of the Light Division, now a single 47 piece band. All that remains of the bands of the Royal Green Jackets and Light Infantry. Soon this band will be changed yet again as the recent cuts will reduce it to a staff band of just 35. The title will be changed to the Band of the Rifles. A bland sounding title for sure! A sad loss for the many fans of this band over the years. This is niche book, highly recommended for those into military music, and British regimental bands in particular.

                Book Description

The fascinating story of music in the United States, from the sacred music of its earliest days to the jazz and rock that enliven the turn of the millennium. Richard Crawford leads us along the widely varied paths taken by American music, beginning with that of Native Americans and continuing with traditions introduced by Spanish, French, and English colonizers; Africans brought here as slaves; and other immigrants. He shows how the three spheres of folk, popular, and classical music continually interact to form a variegated whole. Throughout, the music is set in historical and social context. America's Musical Life strikes a balance in presenting general background and highlighting individual composers, performers, and pieces of music. We learn how sacred music-making coexisted with secular song and dance in the colonies; how nineteenth-century commerce ruled the publication of parlor music; and how the twentieth century introduced an incredibly rich array of styles, encompassing blues, jazz, sound tracks, folk revival, swing, minimalism, rock, and hip-hop, to name just a few, as well as the music of Charles Ives, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Sarah Vaughan--the list is endless. Bringing order to this cacophony, America's Musical Life gives us a highly readable and informative account of this country's rich musical traditions.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Musical Insights.......2006-03-11

Crawford's book is one of the most fascinating I have ever read, and I have read thousands. His graceful, seemingly effortless blend of musical and social history is no less than remarkable. I have read the covers off it.

                5 out of 5 stars A panoramic view.......2003-01-10

Richard Crawford's ambitious book seems a culmination of his previous work, attempting to encompass the whole of American musical activity since the birth of the nation. His basic methodology of dividing American music into three spheres, classical, popular and folk, is a successful tool for making a gargantuan subject more manageable. His chronology makes an attempt to at least cast a glance at each of these areas as it progresses through the centuries.

Some of the individual chapters are, in my opinion, among the strongest essays available on their particular topics. Due to my own lack of previous knowledge in these fields I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the beginnings of organized music making in America, through the church. In particular, the split between the Methodist ideal of polished musical performance and literacy, and the more fundamentalist view that music in worship was direct communication with God, communication hindered by too much technical knowledge--this is a schism whose echoes are still apparent today.

Later on, the chapter on Ives takes a very small corner of the composer's output--six songs--to give a lucid and comprehensive survey of his style, a ingenious solution to the problem of how to give an accurate picture of an enormous, heterogenous body of work in a limited space.

Occasionally during the course of such an enormous work Crawford struggles with his task. At times one has the impression that topics and personages are being included and examined out of a sense of duty rather than real conviction about their significance; one can also quarrel with the choice of emphasis as Crawford approaches the present day. Nor do I think his surprising conclusion, which examines an actual, recent concert performance in which he was personally involved, succeeds in his goal of synthesizing his overall points by looking at them in microcosm, as it were. Still, he hits the the mark at enough points in this sweeping chronology to make it one of the finest works yet to appear on this topic.

                5 out of 5 stars "It wasn't like that".......2002-04-03

In the 1980s I was a graduate student in musicology at the University of Toronto, specializing in Canadian music. A visit by Richard Crawford was one of the galvanizing moments in my education. He spoke on the theme of "Studying American Music" (the talk was later published in the Newsletter of the Institute for Studies in American Music, vol. XIV, no. 2, May 1985), but his ideas proved to be applicable to any field of music study. I know I have certainly made generous use of them in my own work. So it was with particular interest that I turned to this book, his magesterial (nearly 1,000 pages long!) summing up of a career devoted to the subject.

In the epilogue to the book, Crawford states that the historian is motivated by a disagreement with received ideas - "the gut-level feeling that says, 'It wasn't like that.'" In 40 chapters covering the entire history of music in America chronologically, from pre-historical to modern times, Crawford tells us how it really was. One tribute to the quality of this book is that the chapters on music in which I thought I had no interest (e.g., 18th century psalmody or 19th century minstrel shows) I found to be every bit as engaging as those on music that I love and cherish.

Crawford establishes his theoretical basis in a section titled "Notation, the Great Divide, and American Musical Categories" (p. 227). Previous historians (notably Charles Hamm and H. Wiley Hitchcock) have proposed a binary opposition in American music between Classical and Popular, or Cultivated and Vernacular. In place of this dualism, Crawford proposes a richer three-tiered categorization: Composers' music, which aims for TRANSCENDENCE (i.e. lasting value); Performers' music, which values ACCESSIBILITY; and Traditional music, ruled by CONTINUITY. The first two are notated traditions, the last is transmitted orally. These categories arise initially from considering the classical, popular, and folk traditions respectively.

Crawford later develops his thesis to show that considerable overlap and bleeding between categories has been characteristic of American music, especially in the 20th century. A chapter on the Beatles (No. 38, which otherwise seems glaringly out of place here - why an entire chapter on a British group?) makes the point that popular music since the 1960s has achieved transcendence. At about the same time, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, and other composers in the Classical sphere were aiming for accessibility in preference to transcendence. Similarly, jazz arose from popular roots but achieved transcendence, primarily through recordings rather than notation, however.

Crawford's democratic approach gives equal time to the most widely varied styles and genres of music. He treats everything, from hymns to hip-hop and beyond, with scholarly attention that is balanced, scrupulous, and passionate. In the Epilogue, he admits to a grounding in the Classical sphere (and relays a charming story about travelling to a small town to hear his wife Penelope Crawford perform as piano soloist with a community orchestra), but he obviously has a passionate interest in jazz and a respectful attitude towards all types of music. You might want to turn to Hitchcock's *Music in the United States: A Historical Introduction* for a shorter treatment of the subject, or Hamm's *Music in the New World* for a more argumentative approach, but I feel that Crawford's book in time will take its place as the most thoughtful and the most comprehensive of all surveys of American music.

5 out of 5 stars America as music and music as America.......2001-05-12

In the late 1980s, having passed the US Foreign Service written test, I took the Oral Exam, one part of which was basically aimed at probing - in front of a panel of 3 Foreign Service officers - one's general knowledge of American history, culture, and world affairs, plus ability to think on one's feet. Among other questions, I was presented with the following (without any advance warning): `pretend you are a high school teacher giving a lecture on the history of American music; you have 3 minutes - GO!' Well, all I can say is, I wish that Richard Crawford's "America's Musical Life: A History" had been available back then, and that I had read it, because, let's just put it this way, there's a good reason why I didn't pass the Oral Exam!! Having now read Crawford's book, I feel like asking for a second shot at the question...

Basically, what this extremely learned, intelligent, well-organized, readable (and mercifully free of musicologist jargon) book does is to help us understand America from the perspective of music (i.e., what music meant to America), and also to understand American music from the perspective of its social, cultural, economic, political, racial, geographic, and technological history (i.e., what America meant to music). As Crawford states in his introduction, his goal is to undertake a study from a "broader scope [which] might illuminate parallels and intertwinings that give the country's music...its distinctive identity." Crawford accomplishes this, and more, starting from American music's early origins (Native American, Early Christian, "Old, Simple Ditties," and New England Psalmody), moving on to 19th century music (devotional music, minstrels, parlor songs, patriotic and war songs, classical music, etc.) to the folk, jazz, blues, pop, theatrical, and rock music of the 20th century. Throughout, Crawford makes it clear: 1) that there IS such a thing as "American" music; 2) that this music is extremely diverse, both in its expression and its origins; and 3) that to fully understand America, one needs to understand its music, and vice versa.

In sum, this book represents an obvious labor of love by an extremely well qualified author. I highly recommend it, whether or not you are a Foreign Service candidate!

4 out of 5 stars Very informative...to those in the UK.......2001-02-01

This book was first published in Ireland, so it naturally focuses on the UK. However, its information on the pathetic state of modern news coverage is very global. This book is very short, slim, and Situationist. Lots of deranged "comix" throughout. It will definitely open your eyes to many things, but I doubt it will make you want to toss your television out the window. After all, if this book makes you do that, then you are just as "impressionable" as the TV slaves the book derides. And that's the funny thing about this book. It claims that TV is bad because it will rot your brain and tell you what you should think; then the book TELLS you to throw away your TV. Basically what I am saying is, this book is just as opinionated and commanding as the industry it is trying to lambaste. Read the book and see what you think. Let it open your eyes, but don't let it change your life. Because the idea that ALL television is bad is just as lameheaded as saying that ALL white people can't dance, or ALL Asians are good at math, or any other such idiotic popular myths. As Hagbard Celine said in the Illuminatus! Trilogy: "Think for yourself." Actually, there was an additional word on that sentence, but if I wrote it, Amazon would surely edit it out...

5 out of 5 stars Smashes the Idiot Box.......2000-06-13

Test Card F systematically dismantles the myth-machine of Television, and in the process brings down the culture of distraction surrounding Television. But Test Card F isn't some incoherent rant on the evils of modern society - this is in-depth, thought provoking material, well-researched, articulate, and reasonable. This book has more in common with Neil Postman and Marshall McLuhan than the Luddittes.

Test Card F addresses the issue of The Society of the Spectacle - what happens when we all become viewers, spectators in our lives? Today's television viewers are more informed than ever in mankind's history, but are we more active? What is the role of commercials in the television mindscape? Who are these people on the box we see every day? Just who's at the controls here?

Test Card F is a eye-opening, provocative piece of writing, presented with the kind of humorously cynical optimism missing from much of today's social criticism. It's the kind of book that will make you stop watching and start doing.

                              2 out of 5 stars Kerry Ottoson.......2004-10-11

I was very disappointed with the contents of this book. The information presented here can all be found in the readme files on the Embedded XP CD, in the development tool's help files, or on the microsoft website http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded.

If you are looking for details about some of the 10,000 components in the XP Embedded component database, this book does not have anything.

If you want all the installation and tool operation information in one place, this book is for you. If you want more in depth information about what the XP embedded components do, save your money.

2 out of 5 stars Godd for beginner but not enough to do stuff.......2004-07-10

This book falls somewhere between "The most USELESS book..." and a book that is not detailed enough to really use. For beginners yes, its probably a good start, although XPe is not for beginners, it for serious programmers that need to crowbar XP into small things. I ordered this book and "Windows XP Advanced" by Sean D. Liming, and found that "Windows XP Advanced" was all that is needed.

                              5 out of 5 stars A patently unfair review.......2003-11-21

While there are shortcomings in any book, the review below is manifestly unfair and wildly off the mark. To suggest that the book is "useless" while at the same time failing to back up these statements with any detail at all, is unacceptable. The author has a great deal of experience teaching the official Microsoft curriculum for Windows XP Embedded, and selected exercises that teach the most useful fundamentals. Does it cover every aspect of XPE? In 240 pages? Of course not. This wasn't the purpose of the book. The purpose of the book was to give newcomers to XPE a thorough introduction to key concepts of the OS and teach them, step by step, how to perform common implementations.

Want to build a headless system? That's Exercise 10. Want to implement Enhanced Write Filter and boot from CD ROM? That's Exercises 12 and 13. Create a custom component? Exercise 15.

To suggest that the book "doesn't include anything that can be usefull [sic] when developing with/for Windows XPe" (especially to someone who has never tried to boot XPE from CD ROM) is ludicrous - check the XPE newsgroups and you will see that many of the questions posed by newbies can be answered by completing the exercises.

Sometimes books get a bad review and that's fine, but unsubstantiated flames cannot go unanswered.

1 out of 5 stars The most USELESS book.......2003-11-08

I'm an embedded software engineer and my current project involves developing product for XPe based platform.

It's my first project involving Windows XPe and to speed up development I've bought this "book" and in 5 minutes
found that it's the most USELESS purchase I've ever made.

This "book" doesn't include anything that can be usefull when
                              developing with/for Windows XPe.

Evaluation copy of Windows XPe from Microsoft ( cost ~ $3.00 )contains much, much more then this so-called shameless parody on
                              computer book.

Shame on both publisher and author.

5 out of 5 stars Very through and well written for beginnersý butý.......2003-06-06

This is by far one of the most clearly written and explanatory books that you can find on Widows XPE in the tech sector. It is also unfortunately like the ONLY book find on Widows XPE in the tech sector. And although this book does a grand job getting you past the beginning stages of building your own XPE, it is only good for getting you started. Granted this is not a problem with the book, but more a problem with the availability of information on XPE. Which is to say, there is close to none. For instance I have found no expert material on how to convert a third party device driver in an InstallShield package into your own driver component. nVIDIA's Detonator drivers are a good example of this. It is not as simple as importing an .inf file (which is the answer this book will give you), because there are many errors that show up. Making third party device drivers into components is something that should be made very expertly clear as I'm sure anyone working with XPE will have a need to do it on almost any new build.
