An absolute "must-have" for anyone considering the benefits of a medical coding career........2007-09-02
Co-authors Donna Avila-Weil, RHIT and Rhonda Regan, CCS, CCS-P combine their expertise in the updated second edition of Independent Medical Coding: The Comprehensive Guidebook for Career Success as a Medical Coder. Independent Medical Coding is an in-depth guide to pursuing medical coding as a career - an excellent opportunity, given that demand for skilled medical coders currently outstrips supply. Chapters cover how to gain the necessary education, as well as cultivating the needed interpersonal and organizational skills; how to become credentialed; specifics on different types of coding systems; how to establish an independent coding business; alternative careers for a coding specialist; and much more. An absolute "must-have" for anyone considering the benefits of a medical coding career.
Not a bad starting point, but not an all-purpose go-to resource........2007-01-04
Donna Avila-Weil, Independent Medical Coding (Rayve Productions, 1999)
Looking for information on being a medical coder? This could be an interesting start, but it likely won't complete your education.
Independent Medical Coding spends its first third or so going over some general concepts you'll need to know in coding, though the key word here is "general"; you'll end up using this as a jumping-off point to find more detailed books about the ins and outs of coding.
The rest of the book is devoted to more general discussion on starting your own home-based business, all of which once again is of a general nature and will probably send you searching for more detailed books on the same topic, if you're looking to start your own business rather than code for a company. So this one is worth your time if you're brand-new to the search, but be aware you'll be buying more books after this. ***
Title is misleading - and other reviews are woefully bad.......2003-07-17
The word "comprehensive" in the title is the objectionable term here since this book is essentially a series of short, insufficient passages. There is nothing here that couldn't be found for free on the internet or with a little bit of work reviewing *any* basic "starting your own business books."
I'll be returning this book. Ironically, I'm out the return postage cost, but since the book is really only a handbook and uses a big font, the cost probably won't be much to ship such a small book back. My advice is to not waste your money unless you need a primer on basic business principles and a reference for where to get the medical coder training.
Independent Medical Coding.......2002-03-01
This book is really a great resource. I have devoured it. There is so much useful information in it and it is the first book I have found on this subject that goes into all it would take to make this a great career move. I was looking for a great home business and I think this book will be a great help. I wish I had found it sooner. Good job for the authors.
An excellent resource for coding professionals.......2000-03-20
I was very pleased to find this book on Independent Medical Coding. I had been considering just such a career, but didn't know where to begin. This book was exactly what I needed. It gives the experienced coder an alternative career path into entrepeneurship without doing "billing". This book provided me the first stepping stone in what is soon to be my new career. I would like to see the authors do an even more in-depth book, providing even more information about this field. Because books of this nature are so rare, a comprehensive reference would be wonderful, and I would gladly pay extra for the information. The book as written, however, is an excellent resource and I definitely recommend it to anyone already skilled in coding who is interested in working for themselves. Thank you for writing this book!

Book Description
The Adjuster! is a practical, down-to-earth self-help guide to learning the business of insurance claim adjusting. Written in an easy, comfortable style the book takes the beginner by the hand and leads the way through the basics of investigation, evidence gathering, analysis, evaluation and ultimately settlement negotiation. For the person who has no insurance experience the book provides the nuts and bolts of claims in a straightforward, simple manner with excercises and suggestions for further study. It includes descriptions of the materials and equipment which are used by the insurance claim adjuster and explains in honest terms what it takes to go into business for oneself. The book demonstrates how to start out "on the kitchen table" in a business of your own, or teaches the basics by which a trainee can go out and get a job working for someone else in a new and exciting career.
Customer Reviews:
Thank You.......2002-03-17
Mr. Smith does a wonderful job of introducing the claim adjusting business within the larger insurance field. Items up for discussion range from job related risks to ideas for similar or related careers. For those who consider themselves in the preliminary career research stage, this is a fantastic first read. Not every question is going to be spelled out in black and white, but the adjusting business is all about putting the pieces together for yourselves!
THE ADJUSTER, MAKING INSURANCE CLAIMS PAY.......2001-12-13
THIS BOOK IS STRICTLY FOR BEGINNERS WHO DON'T HAVE THE FOGGIEST IDEA HOW TO OPERATE A BUSINESS IN THE SIMPLIEST WAY. IF YOU NEED TO KNOW THE TYPE OF CLOTHES TO WEAR, HOW TO SET UP A DIARY SYSTEM, FINE. PERSONALLLY, I WISH I COULD GET MY MONEY BACK.
IF YOU EXPECT MUCH IN THE WAY OF ACTUAL ADJUSTING, ALMOST ANY OTHER BOOK WOULD HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN THIS ONE.
From an Independent Adjuster.......2000-01-06
This book is every adjuster's bible, or should be. I have worked many years as an independent adjuster, without any such resource. A great deal of my time was spent trying to track down answers to general questions, that all adjusters have. The majority of those questions are addressed in this one book. Mr. Smith knows the areas of importance that an adjuster needs to know, on a day to day basis and has provided that information in his book. The book is also entertaining which makes it not only an easy read but an enjoyable read.
There are many different types of adjusters but there isn't any one type that would not find this book of some use. What do you do when you are on the phone with a claimant and suddenly they inform you they are represented? I spent five years in Management for one of the larger commercial carriers and never had this scenario spelled out for me or any of our adjusters as well as Mr. Smith advises on how to handle this touchy situation. Some very simple scenarios are addressed, because if handled incorrectly, they can be very costly. That is why this book should be required reading and used as an ongoing reference material for all adjusters who are truly serious at being the best in their particular field.
And to those adjusters, who are right now, out there sitting in fear because they don't know the answer to some question and therefore cannot proceed on a claim or an assignment (every adjuster knows that feeling), buy this book so you do not have to go through that experience anymore.
Thank you Mr. Gordon Smith, for realizing the need for a book such as this, for adjusters!
Excellent book for entry level adjusters.......1998-03-24
If I were going to take up a new profession, I would hope to be able to go to a friend who already had a great deal of experience in the trade and have him tell me ALL about it. This friend's stories should be witty as well as factual. Of course, I would want a philosophical and historical overview of things as well as a nitty-gritty, microsopic view of the details necessary for getting the job done.
It would be tough to find a pal with nothing but time on his/her hands for non-stop mentoring, and one who wouldn't mind 4:00 a.m. phone calls when questions occurred to me.
If I were interested in becoming an Indepedent Insurance Adjuster, or learning what it was like to be one, I'd be in luck.
Gordon Smith's The Adjuster! Making Insurance Claims Pay is the tell-all book that really tells all. The author draws on his years of experience as an independent adjuster to give a wide-ranging account of what the job is and how the industry works. He tells who the players are and what their points of view are. His stories touch on topics from the Great Fire of London in 1666 to the finer points of ladder selection in the here-and-now. He ties the whole book together with a narrative that is both amusing and informative.

Book Description
Sensational for speech writers, and for social and personal amusement! For some years investors have been asking Mr Dines to publish a compilation of his jokes and bits of wisdom from his speeches, thousands of radio and TV interviews and from The Dines Letter itself. Mr Dines' first joke book has over 60 categories of jokes and here are a dozen free samples: 1) We arrive in the world naked, and we leave the world naked...so stockbrokers are just doing God's work. 2) Always travel first class, because if you don't, your heirs will!. 3) The early bird gets the worm, but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese! 4) Why is divorce so expensive? Because it's worth it. 5) If the world were always logical, men would ride sidesaddle... and women's bikes! 6) The argument with your wife you just won is not over yet...and the man who thinks he's smarter than his wife has a really smart wife! 7) There are many benefits to marriage, such as sex every night...and, if you're lucky, your partner joins in once a month! 8) Somebody asked me why my relatives don't travel to visit and stay with me. My secret is that I borrow from the rich ones and lend to the poor ones...and neither ever comes back! 9) Our leaders' heads are deeper in the sand than armless clam diggers! 10) They say I look "distinguished"... that's the last stage before extinguished. 11) Do you know the difference between broccoli and boogers?...Kids won't eat broccoli! 12) Always persist. Never give up...think of the poor guy who invented "Preparation G"!

SIDESPLITTING? MORE LIKE LIGHTLY HUMOROUS!.......2003-01-07
First of all, I like James Dines as an investment newsletter writer. I've also heard him speak in person and thought that he was exceptionally good. What I am about to say about this particular book is only based on my opinion of this piece of work.
_________
Here's a book that fans of James Dines, the original gold-bug may find a treasure to own. I think that his investment newsletter is interesting to read because of his unique writing style and in-depth analysis. I especially find his political/terrorism takes to be very interesting.
But this book is not something that I've enjoyed that much. It's basically a collection of self-coined quotations that are organized like a quotation book (which are not very interesting to read as a rule). There aren't any stories or cartoons or commentary/sidebars from Mr. Dines which would have made it far more interesting.
This looks like a cheap production where someone went through all his newsletters and snipped out little pieces. Now I realize that the book was intended for speech writers, but I think it could have used a lot more imagination in creating the final product.
Mr. Dines could have done a whole lot better if he would have invested more time, money and creativity into this book project. It's a shame to have so much great content wasted on a low-budget production.
The Dines Letter is a far more superior product than this.
Great Laughs!.......2001-10-30
At least one good laugh on every page! I've read through the book from cover to cover and loved every minute. I enjoyed the bits of wisdom interspersed with some hearty laughs - a wonderful combination. Now I leave the book available and just open to any page when I want to lift my spirits. I've enjoyed sharing many of the jokes with my family and friends, and will continue to do so. Highly recommended for everyone (although there is some mildly off-color, and funny! material).

What a piece of c...p!!! Don't buy!!!.......2006-04-13
As someone wrote, if Amazon allowed us to rate negatively, I would rate this book minus 9. This is NOT a real tab book. Contains parts of solos here and there. If the publisher would be serious, they would scrap this version and re-do it. It is bad because it contains the songs of the fist maiden albums. Give a try to these guys though 3W guitarrockpower. they sell on you know which popular sites. Their tabs are often very long (10 pages or so) but all the notes are there.
No solos.......2005-09-28
If you are trying to learn the solos of the first four Iron Maiden albums (S/T, Killers, Number of the Beast, and Piece of Mind), this is not the book for you. This book only has the rhythm guitar.
I agree with the majority.......2005-07-17
I bought this book when I was first starting the guitar in the mid-80s. Even then I knew it was horrible. No solos. It really does suck
You mean I can't give this zero stars?.......2003-12-25
I own this book because I am a collector of Iron Maiden. I would not recommend this book to anyone who wants the guitar tablatures.
The tabs are written for a single guitar, and are not remotely accurate. While the collection of songs in this book is impressive, I would recommend any other tablature book instead of this one.
Terrible.......2003-11-09
I've been playing guitar for 30 years and, as a hobby, I collect tablature. This tab book is simply the worst I've seen. Most of the riffs are not tabbed, none of the solos are. The basic chord structure is given and that's it. Heck, even some of the lyrics are wrong. The Iron Maiden Tab books that followed are excellent and very accurate. I keep hoping for new, revised edition of this book. No such luck, though.

Book Description
Braveheart and Broomsticks is a collection of scholarly essays on movies, myths, and magic. It covers a wide variety of topics including: movie ad campaigns, the evolution of the Braveheart legend, Scottish poetry, Jim Henson's movie Labyrinth, internet fan sites, Wicca and the witchcraft movement, the great Harry Potter debate, fairy tales, and the novels of Willa Cather.
Customer Reviews:
Great for grad students.......2003-12-12
If you are going for an advanced degree, you definitely need this
book.
I thought it was thought provoking........2003-01-08
I wrote a review of this before, but it somehow didn't end up on the site. I thought the topics were fascinating. I thought she covered them in an interesting way. I thought the piece on the Labyrinth was particualarly good. I thought the feminist perspective was something people rarely look at with the movie. I also think the debate on Harry Potter was great. And the Essay on William Wallace was thought provoking.
It's a great book for a Communication Studies major. I think it seems like something a professor might want for their class. Having taken many Comm Studies courses myself, I am able to see what approach the author has taken with many of the essays. If I had examples like that when I was in college a few years ago, I think it would have been easier to understand how to write the papers, because much of the material I was given to read in many classes was extremely boring.
I think it's a great read whether for academic reasons or not. Probably the weakest article is the one on Wicca merely because Wicca isn't a structured thing. The author did a great job with it considering the nature of the subject. My favorites were the Labyrinth and William Wallace pieces. I would recommend the book, for anyone in the mood for scholarly reading that isn't boring. (Which is pretty rare, so heads up to the author who makes it interesting).
Braveheart is the BEST!!!.......2003-01-08
Absolutely amazing! I never knew Braveheart was based on a poem and I was captivated by the description of all the different versions of the legend. I totally disagree with the other review, the Labyrinth chapter was fantastic! Who knew there was this weird internet culture obsessing over a kid flick? The Harry Potter debate gave a really good overview of the controversy surrounding the books and I really liked the quotes from people around the world debating it. The chapter on Wicca was phenomenal and I have a whole new view of witches. Even the chapter on Willa Cather fit in really nicely. Never a big fan of Cather, but I think that the author's approach to the novels was really radical and I think English teachers around the world should take note. I learned so much reading this book! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!
Book is a flop.......2003-01-07
OK, I normally like books that review and give opinions on movies and books. Being a fan of quite a few works that she wrote on, I was disappointed. On the Labyrinth topic, she totally bashed on fanfiction. I agree that the original ending to the movie is fine the way it is, but she needs to realize that these people are just playing make believe, sorta like Sarah. I didn't agree with quite a few things that this writer proposed, but buy if you want to. My advice is don't.

Book Description
In September 1979, there was a cosmic shift that went unnoticed by the majority of mainstream America. This shift was triggered by the release of the Sugarhill Gang's single, Rapper's Delight. Not only did it usher rap music into the mainstream's consciousness, it brought us the word "hip-hop." And It Don't Stop, edited by the award winning journalist Raquel Cepeda, with a foreword from Nelson George is a collection of the best articles the hip-hop generation has produced. It captures the indelible moments in hip-hop's history since 1979 and will be the centerpiece of the twenty-fifth-anniversary celebration.
This book epitomizes the media's response by taking the reader on an engaging and critical journey, including the very first pieces written about hip-hop for publications like The Village Voice--controversial articles that created rifts between church and state, the artist and journalist, and articles that recorded the rise and tragic fall of the art form's appointed heroes, such as Tupac Shakur, Eazy-E, and the Notorious B.I.G. The list of contributors includes Toure, Kevin Powell, dream hampton, Harry Allen, Cheo Hodari Coker, Greg Tate, Bill Adler, Hilton Als, Danyel Smith, and Joan Morgan.

Book Description
From the ghetto to mainstream, the story of a vibrant culture that dominates popular music.
It began as a soundtrack of a mix of funk, soul, and rhythm and blues, invented by blacks and Latinos for ghetto block parties in the South Bronx in the 1970s, evolving into the rap and hip hop that became the hot center of youth culture during the last decade of the century. At first a music to party to, rap kept reinventing itself as a cry of pain and rebellion, eventually spreading across America and jumping all barriers of race to blossom into a critique of American life, race, and political hypocrisy, embraced by the young, regardless of color. From the turntable acrobatics of Grandmaster Flash to the electro-funk of Afrika Bambaataa's Zulu nation, from the provocative blend of black nationalism and rebellion of Public Enemy to the chart-topping albums of Eminem, hip hop's story of success is a journey of a subculture attacking the mainstream to become the mainstream itself. Now a multimillion dollar industry that dominates record sales worldwide, it influences international fashion, language, and youth culture. The Hip Hop Years traces the history of this vibrant culture through the firsthand accounts of many of the people who have played a pivotal role in that journey, including Kool Herc, Grandmaster Flash, Run-D.M.C., Ice-T, Public Enemy, N.W.A., De La Soul, Wu-Tang Clan, and Eminem.

Serious, straight history.......2001-07-27
There are several rap/hip-hop history books out there, but very few that just give you the straight facts free from press-kit biographies or fan-magazine drivel. This is one of the few really good ones, covering the whole spectrum from the early 1970s block party DJs to the late 1990s mega-industry. Well-informed and informative.
Very comprehensive.......2000-04-05
If you happen to be a true hip-hop head that ends up thinking a little too much about your music collection, then this book is for you. Never before has a product been introduced to the market that has captured the full scope of the roots of hip-hop music to its present day crossover appeal. Literally thousands of books have been written about rock music and other genres, but only now can we, the fans of rap, boast of our own definitive historical review. Another great book to check out that isn't quite as serious as "A History of Rap" is "Ego Trip's Book of Rap Lists," a light-hearted look at rap's unique presence in the music industry. So do yourself a favor and add this to your shopping cart today, along with the Book of Rrap Lists. Then you'll be able to really know what you're talking about when you try to defend rap music to all your friends.

Book Description
The dictionary defines trivia as: "matter or things of very slight importance, commonplace, or ordinary." Yet anyone who has ever read anything about a favorite sports star, singer, historic figure or celebrity will find that it is often the so-called trivia that makes things memorable about that person or event. Nowhere is this more apparent than in this book. Add the context of the progression of hundreds of parallel lives through the timeline of a pseudo calendar format and it becomes anything but commonplace. This is especially intriguing when coupled with music history. Over 2,000 entries are listed in chronological order, covering every day of the year. By combining a calendar format with wonderful photos and illustrations, and an elevated element of trivia, this new kind of to-the-point history in "on-this-day" format sets a new trend in books for the instant gratification of 21st-century culture.

Book Description
Verification is too often approached in an ad hoc fashion. Visually inspecting simulation results is no longer feasible and the directed test-case methodology is reaching its limit. Moore's Law demands a productivity revolution in functional verification methodology.
Writing Testbenches Using SystemVerilog offers a clear blueprint of a verification process that aims for first-time success using the SystemVerilog language. From simulators to source management tools, from specification to functional coverage, from I's and O's to high-level abstractions, from interfaces to bus-functional models, from transactions to self-checking testbenches, from directed testcases to constrained random generators, from behavioral models to regression suites, this book covers it all.
Writing Testbenches Using SystemVerilog presents many of the functional verification features that were added to the Verilog language as part of SystemVerilog. Interfaces, virtual modports, classes, program blocks, clocking blocks and others SystemVerilog features are introduced within a coherent verification methodology and usage model.
Writing Testbenches Using SystemVerilog introduces the reader to all elements of a modern, scalable verification methodology. It is an introduction and prelude to the verification methodology detailed in the
Verification Methodology Manual for SystemVerilog.
Customer Reviews:
High-level, abstract approach and guidelines for the *experienced* Verification engineer.......2007-03-25
The book's title is a bit misleading. It does NOT teach you Systemverilog (for Verification) -- there is a separate book by Chris Spear ("Systemverilog for Verification") sold by the same publisher that focuses more on Systemverilog syntax and language features. This book is NOT a tutorial (i.e. beginner's guide) on how to write testbenches -- although it does go through the basic concepts, objectives, and challenges in writing maintainable/re-usable testbench environments, most of the textbook examples are too cryptic/advanced for an entry-level engineer.
So then, what does this book focus on? Well, the book focuses on general guidelines to writing re-usuable, high-level testbenches. The author uses Systemverilog as the language to communicate his concepts, but as I said before, the book does NOT teach you Systemverilog. (To the author's credit, he is very upfront about that in foreward/intro section.)
Who should read it:
Experienced verification engineers with a basic understanding of Systemverilog (and why it's superior to Verilog), who want some ideas/examples of how to deploy Systemverilog's advanced features (like classes, structs, random vars) in a verification environment.
What I liked:
The use of classes to encapsulate bus-functional-models (BFMs), how to create and manage variations of a basic BFM (using extended/derived classes), etc. He also shows how to combine randomization with classes, to create random stimulus-sequences.
What could have been improved:
I was hoping the book would cover SVA (systemverilog assertions) in greater depth, but I guess there are other books for that. He also superficially mentions "configurations" -- that is a feature in Verilog-2001 and VHDL-93. The book should have covered that in more depth (even though it's not a new Systemverilog feature), as it pertains to testcase management and organization.
What you should have:
You need a good background and experience in ASIC/RTL-verification -- this book is not an introduction to testbench concepts, or the Systemverilog language! You need to know some Systemverilog language, so either have a different book (like Chris Spear's "Systemverilog for Verification"), or the official IEEE Systemverilog 1800-2005 LRM next to your side. Though not necessary, it's helpful to have a basic understanding about object-oriented programming, because the examples in the book use Systemverilog's classes (and inheritance) to illustrate a lot of points. Object-oriented concepts would otherwise be foreign to most engineers working in the hardware field.
Ohter notes:
The book makes numerous references to the VMM (Verilog Methodology Manual), which is a separate book by the same author. VMM is probably as close to a 'canned' (i.e. pre-built) testbench environment as you can get. If you run Synopsys VCS in your company, then VMM is worth investigatation. Unfortunately, I've heard it doesn't run well on competing simulators (Cadence, Mentor), as Systemverilog support is still in its infancy.
