Customer Reviews:
What a strange book...........2007-08-21
This is one of the oddest books I have seen in a long time. The text looks like it was typed on a typewriter. At first I thought this might be just a visual style, but on closer examination it really does appear to have been typewritten. Whole sections appear to be reprinted photocopies of documents from other sources.
There were two useful sections, however. There was a section that listed the licensing requirements for claims adjusters by state. I have been unable to locate this information any where else. However, I can't verify the accuracy of the information. The other useful section gave a list of job titles which cover the duties and responsibilities of a claims examiner. Those two sections may be worth a look for a job-hunter, but given the cost of the book, I suggest asking your local library to obtain a copy for you via interlibrary loan.
Poorly written.......2006-03-11
I knew nothing about insurance adjusting and this book taught me nothing more. It did not appear to be proofread prior to publication, as there are many grammatical errors. Furthermore, it is just not composed so that someone without knowledge of insurace would understand it. A week later, I bought Principles of Property & Casualty by Bisys and found this to better organized.

Book Description
Highlighting how slippery numbers and questionable mathematical conclusions emerge and what can be done to safeguard against them, this book examines flawed usage of math in public affairs through actual cases of how mathematical data and conclusions can be distorted and misrepresented to influence public opinion. The author analyzes the cost of "slippery math" in terms of squandered resources and identifies common misperceptions about the role of math in public affairs. He discusses how math education can be reformed to sharpen public awareness of "slippery math", the development of math models and their use and misuse, and proper and improper polling methods.

Outrageous!.......2004-05-15
The series of "Hall of Shame" books would not be complete without these stories of ridiculous, pathetic, laughable, and horrifying acts that have taken place in the history of the gridiron. I have read, re-read, and re-re-read the various stories in this book, and shared much of it with friends.
For instance, learn of the cheapest owner in the history of pro sports, Harry Wismer, whose New York Titans (which eventually became the Jets) watched all their game film on a single projector, with squads taking turns; whose scouting department consisted of a single copy of Street & Smith's; and whose motto was, "Don't cash your paycheck with anybody you like."
How about the most lopsided score in football history (222-0)? How about the TV network who forever changed programming history by cutting away from a tight game to show "Heidi," thereby inventing the phrase "______ will be shown in its entirety at the completion of our game"? How about the player who cost his team a Rose Bowl victory by running the wrong way with a fumble, ultimately scoring a safety for the other guys instead of a TD for his own? These are just a very, very few of the dozens of fantastic stories collected here.
Better snap yours up quick, as it is out of print and not everyone is willing to let go of a used copy.
Customer Reviews:
Semi-worthy sequel.......2004-05-15
The first "Football Hall of Shame" is an absolute classic, and must be read to be believed. This followup consists mainly of leftovers that didn't make it into the first book, so it's understandably not quite as terrific, but anyone who gets volume 1 must also have volume 2. Tremendously fun reading about the players, owners, refs, mascots, fans, etc., who have committed memorable blunders over the years. Some classic stories, including Joe Montana's little-publicized habit as a practical joker. Fun fun!
Good collection of football follies.......2001-06-06
Like I said in the review title, a good collection of funny football foibles, although it seems a step down from the first Hall of Shame. Of course, book #1 had the more famous tales, i.e. "Wrong Way" Reigels; Georgia Tech 222, Cumberland 0; Cal-Stanford game-ending kickoff laterals. But still, Version 2 is nicely divided into fun chapters, like Most Outrageous School Bands, Craziest Players, Dumbest Coach Moves, and the like. Basically, if you enjoy NFL Football Follies and Sports Bloopers, you'll like this book, albeit without the Bob Saget-esque inane commentary.

One of Linux's chief attractions always has been the wealth of fun toys that are available to its users. For people who like to play with shaky software that's emerging from some hacker's brain, the open-source operating system has no peer. The Book of Linux Music & Sound explores one of Linux's rougher facets and the software that's emerged to enable audiophiles to combine their interests in sound and Linux. The book is primarily a survey of what's out there, and one might conclude that a careful scan of Linux software archives and some attention to documentation files would reveal most of what Dave Phillips covers in these pages. That's probably true, but Phillips (who includes most of the software he talks about in the book on the companion CD-ROM) has done a service to readers by saving them the trouble of tracking down the information themselves, and providing also informed criticism of the software.
Coverage of a given software package--and Phillips documents several score of them--typically begins with a data capsule that explains where to go for the latest version, and some instructions on how to install it. From there, he explains how to use the program. The form of this coverage varies, for obvious reasons, among the packages that he covers. However, it's rather deep universally, and reflects his honest understanding of what each program is good for and how it fits with other software. Taken in concert with his instructions on how to set up and configure (in both hardware and software) Linux machines for audio work, this book is a fine resource for Linux users who have an interest in sound. --David Wall
Topics covered: The state of the art in Linux audio, including the native capabilities of the operating system, and (especially) Linux software for sound and music work. The book has a well-annotated catalog of Linux software, including WAV file recorders and editors, MIDI editors, MP3 utilities, synthesizers (both real-time and otherwise), and music notation programs. A special section deals with software for DJs who are interested in using Linux to generate techno, hip-hop, and house music.

- Work with Mod, Midi, and Mp3 files
- Perform hard disk multi-track recording

Customer Reviews:
great starting point.......2001-10-02
Having a firm grasp of the english language, I feel that I can pay the proper amount of dignity to such a well written book.
Having run Linux for a few years, I felt it was time to venture into the realm of music and sound. Mr. Phillip's book was the perfect starting place. The writing was concise and accurate and it effortlessly guided me through some tough spot's.
When I would hit the wall on some application's the author himself was very prompt and courteous and saw me through it with a volley of email exchange's. Let's see Bill Gates reply to the end user the next time he get's a 'Blue Screen of Death'?!?!
Money well spent. I would recommend this "one of a kind" book to any Linux user curious about the world of computer music and sound. Bravo!
J.
Why waster your money?.......2001-09-19
There is little point to buy this book unless you wanted a printed copy with a CD-ROM since the author has made and keep updated the website containing the same information.
Of course, it doesn't mean the content, which is basically just a list and short explanation of a vast range of sound/music related software, is bad especially for linux beginners. However, at this price, I cannnot recommend to buy one.
Useful for end users, but overpriced.......2001-08-01
As end users start migrating to Linux, it's only natural that Linux books start appearing on how to obtain and use software (and not just administration and development tools). In that vein, this book contains an extremely thorough survey of audio software that would take quite a while to investigate on your own. If you are a Linux user (or a potential Linux user) interested in finding good tools for music and sound, this book is an excellent resource.
Having said all that, I think the list price the publisher set for this book is ridiculous. For under [price], this book would be a slam dunk. But I expect even a lot of people who are interested in this information will find it hard to justify the price, especially when a lot of it will be obsolete in a year or two. Five stars for the content, one star for value.
Not for techical minded.......2001-07-05
Iam sorry to disagree with many enthusiastic readres who seem to have loved the book. I read a good review in LinuxJournal sometime ago and bought the book. To my disapointment, the book had no techincal info on either sound or music beyond HOWTOs. If I want music apps, I prefer downloading it from LinuxApps.com instead of paying 30+$.
An accompanying CD-ROM includes over 100 MIDI applications.......2001-02-24
Dave Phillips is an expert Linux programmer and a professionally performing musician who draws upon his special expertise and experience to explain the basics of digital sound and Linux-specific software/hardware issues in The Book Of Linux Music & Sound. Phillips covers the general Linux audio set-up, basic and advanced system use, as well as the broad range of Linux sound and music applications. Readers will learn how to record, mix, and add effects to music tracks; work with MOD, MIDI, and MP3 files; use hard disk multi-track recording; explore software sound synthesis programs like Csound; share sound resources over a network or broadcast live over the Internet; use realtime synthesizers; and produce high quality scores with music notation programs. An accompanying CD-ROM includes over one hundred MIDI applications, including digital audio and music notation software, games, and utilities. The Book Of Linux Music & Sound is a "must" for all Linux users wanting to incorporate sound and create music, and take full advantage of their computer's manifold capabilities in the process.

Book Description
Renaissance Revivals examines patterns in the London revivals of two English Renaissance theatre genres over the past four centuries. Griswold's focus on revenge tragedies and city comedies illuminates the ongoing interaction between society and its cultural products. No cultural object is ever created anew, she argues, but is instead constructed from existing cultural genres and conventions, the visions and professional needs of the artist, and the interests of an audience. Thus, every "new play" is in part a renaissance and every "revival" is in part an entirely new cultural object.

Not an extremly good book.......2003-01-14
For people who have seen the japanese version of dbz/gt they wont be very pleased with this book nice try but needs a lot more work.
A nice try, but much work is needed........2002-11-19
As a previous viewer stated, this really is nothing more than a glorified magazine.I've gone throuh it, cover-to-cover, and I'm wondering if these people have actually SEEN dragonball z. There are numerous problems with it. Errors, mispellings, innaccurate information.
Let's start with the errors. I'm convinced that the authors are little more than American DBZ viewers who have seen a Japanese episode once or twice. The information looks like it was copied directly from a website, complete with mispellings and all. The "biographies" are short, and rarely state anything meaningful or interesting ("Bra is the daughter of Vegeta and Bulma"). Yet another problem : Is it just me, or do poser magazines struggle to get real images? Numerous (100+) of the images in this book are terrible screenshots that are blurry, fuzzy, or grainy (Many so terrible you can hardly make out what it's a picture of).
The synopsis of Dragonball/Dragonball Z/Dragonball GT is not very good either. The author's have a rather snobby view of American fans and a high view of themselves who have, quote, "Seen the REAL version [of DBZ]". Pojo, get off of it. Not even the card game guide is good, with poor strategies and being very outdated. I'm not even gonna start on the pathetic 3-D images thing.
That said, I really do praise Pojo for trying. It's much better than anything Becket or some other magazine company has tried to put out. However, hopefully they will revise it, knowing that DBZ fans are one of the most difficult to please.
Here's the bottom line, for the type of people who would spend $9 on a magazine, I think they will be very pleased. Kids/Teens who are fans of the English version of Dragon Ball Z and are not picky about tiny details will be satisfied. I'm just warning those would consider this a valid source for information. In short, information accurate enough to satisfy those who don't know better, but not on par with some of the stuff that can be found on the internet.
I'm now know Every Thing About DragonBall Z!.......2002-10-16
I thought I knew a lot about DBZ before I bought this book, Boy was I wrong! This book has over 300 Biographies! I now know every one from Unreleased DBZ movies and Characters from DBGT! I knew who Majin Buu was before two years ago! My friends were jealous! Get this book! Make your friends green (like Piccolo!)With Envy! I paid the hefty price from a local book store. Buy it, you won't be disapointed! Oh Yeah there's a funny section about who would should do a DBZ live action movie, about wich Actors should play them!
Book Description
Welcome to the world of 3D terrain programming. Now you can break away from the computer game mold of lackluster backgrounds and create amazing landscapes for your characters to explore. Focus On 3D Terrain Programming gives you the skills you need to do just that. This book brings the high-talking, abstract concepts down to earth so you can actually put them into practice. It covers the three most widely accepted terrain rendering solutions - geomipmapping, quad trees, and ROAM. Texture mapping and lighting techniques are also discussed, as well as cool special effects. Plus, the author provides the code so you can readily implement the solutions into your own games!
Customer Reviews:
Rather bad book.......2006-09-13
I consider that book an outrage. His writing style is disgusting. Also, if the author does not know anything about mathematics, why did he write a book like this one? He covers 3 algorithms about terrain, but this topic is much more complex than that! I have read more than 30 articles about other terrain algorithms, including those 3, and they are all much better explained. The ROAM 2.0 algorithm is very bad-explained, I had to understand it by other means.
A complete useless book. Although the young author really has a good future, I don't understand how they let a teenager write such book.
another stupid book!.......2005-02-06
Don't buy this book. After I read the first a couple of chapters, my impression is either the author doesn't know exactly about the subject or the kid is so genious that he thinks everybody can understand what he seems to understand.
For example, while explaining detail map, there is no explanation for background theoy of detail map. Instead, the author just says some stupid words about detail map and shows a pictire saying "Wow! it looks better!". All right, if I do just a simple cut and paste of OpenGL code, I can do that. But does it what you want? We want to understand what's going on behind the scenes. In my experience, this kinf of writing happens either when you don't understand something exactly or when you don't know how to explain something logically.
One good thing about this book is its content list. By reading the content list of the book, you get to know what you should do to implement a terrain engine. And for this respect, this book did a good job. But isn't it too expensive to pay the bucks for a couple of pages of content list? I'd rather go to Border's book store and read only the content list.
Good Introduction to a Very Complex Topic.......2005-01-12
I think many of the reviews here are a bit harsh and miss the intention of this book. The chief complaint of the book is that it does not go into very much detail. It seems to me that this title is intended to be a basic introduction to what is a very complex topic.
Having developed terrain applications for many years, I have a very thorough understanding of how difficult it is to approach this topic. While there are many great books available on the topic that go into much greater and complex detail (see: Musgrave, Perlin, Foley, et al), there has long been a need for a simple, basic introductory text.
This book fills that need.
Rather than inundate the new reader with 1000+ pages of difficult material, Polack gently takes them through the basics of terrain rendering. Using humor (which really isn't as bad as some stuffed shirts would have you believe), he gives good, basic explanations. The accompanying CD contains a lot of good source code, ripe for exploration. An excellent way to learn. For those who haven't been scared off, the original white papers are included for further studying. Polack also includes chapter-by-chapter references for additional reading.
The complaints over the fact that the book uses OpenGL are also a bit silly. The important thing here are the topics and the introduction to their basic principals. Also, OpenGL is more universal than DirectX, giving this book a broader audience. If the need to use DirectX is such a concern, you can always write your own rendering and buffering adapter.
All in all, I heartily recommend this book for anyone interested in getting a start in terrain modelling. Ah, if only it existed when I started out with Musgrave's Texturing and Modeling book! ;)
Very cheat introduction to terrain rendering.......2005-01-12
This book is and basic introduction to terrain rendering. It gets quick to the point and doesn't care much about the math. If you look for a introduction to terrain rendering and want get your results quickly this is a book for you, especially for this price!!! If you are looking for a profound book about terrain rendering with focus on math, choose another book.
Very inadaquate........2004-08-27
The text doesn't come close to describing any of the terrain rendering algorithms adequately. For this, the author refers the reader to whitepapers on the companion CD written by the original authors. After a short search on the Internet, I turned up a wealth of better written descriptions on 3d terrain rendering algorithms. I suggest others to do the same.
The author makes a big deal out of the importance of morphing vertex points to minimize the effect of popping but provides no implementation description. As he says in the text: "I didn't want to limit your imagination..." What a cop out!
The c++ code provided on the companion CD is cleanly written, compiled and ran without problems, but is also clean of any useful comments further mystifying the subject. Another search on the Internet turned up many source code examples with better documentation.
