          Book Description

Freedom in the World is an institutional effort by Freedom House to monitor the progress and decline of political rights and civil liberties in 191 nations and 50 related territories. These year-end reviews of freedom began in 1955, when they were called the Balance Sheet of Freedom and, still later, the Annual Survey of the Progress of Freedom. This program was expanded in the early 1970s, and has been issued in a more developed context as a yearbook since 1978. Since 1989, Freedom in the World project has been a year-long effort produced by regional experts, consultants, and democracy specialists. The survey derives its information from a wide range of sources. Most valued of these are the many human rights activists, journalists, editors, and political figures who keep the world informed of the human rights situation in their countries.

Throughout the year, Freedom House personnel regularly conduct fact-finding missions to gain more in-depth knowledge of the vast political transformations affecting our world. They meet a cross-section of political parties and associations, human rights monitors, religious figures, representatives of both the private sector and trade union movement, academics and journalists. During the past year, Freedom House staff traveled to numerous countries throughout most of the world's geographical and political regions. The project team also consults a vast array of published source materials, ranging from the reports of other human rights organizations to regional newspapers and magazines.

                        Book Description

The "Argentine disappointment"—why Argentina persistently failed to achieve sustained economic stability during the twentieth century—is an issue that has mystified scholars for decades. In Straining the Anchor, Gerardo della Paolera and Alan M. Taylor provide many of the missing links that help explain this important historical episode. Written chronologically, this book follows the various fluctuations of the Argentine economy from its postrevolutionary volatility to a period of unprecedented prosperity to a dramatic decline from which the country has never fully recovered. The authors examine in depth the solutions that Argentina has tried to implement such as the Caja de Conversión, the nation's first currency board which favored a strict gold-standard monetary regime, the forerunner of the convertibility plan the nation has recently adopted.

With many countries now using—or seriously contemplating—monetary arrangements similar to Argentina's, this important and persuasive study maps out one of history's most interesting monetary experiments to show what works and what doesn't.

                        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars When history fruitfully enlightens the current debate.......2003-07-16

Very recommendable either for a Ph.D. student interested in the history of emerging markets crisis or the scholar aiming to tell her students how modern theory and empirical tests are applicable to some stories like the Argentine one.

Not only is this book a magnific contribution to understand the monetary and banking history of Argentina, but also a contribution that informs present-day debates in macroeconomics (e.g. the choice of optimal exchange rate regime, various generations of financial and currency crisis, bank runs). The authors make a significant effort to formalise major stylised facts across different crisis episodes, through the lens of modern monetary and banking theory. Moreover, they offer a fresh look at issues concerning crisis management and resolution and policy evaluation in the "first" era of economic globalisation (1880-1914) as well as during the interwar period all the way down to the 1930's depression.
Modern tools help test the hypothesis laid out generally at the beginning of the theoretical framework introduced in each chapter. Ranging from accounting exercises (fiscal solvency, banking balance sheets, as a few examples)to cutting-edge time series econometric modelling, the evidence found by the authours sheds light on crucial empirical issues. Some examples may illustrate this point:
                        a) The Purchasing Power Parity assumption (PPP, in a single equation cointegrating framework);
                        b) Money supply and demand, and exchange rate determinants in 1884-1913;
                        c) The Internal-External Convertibility dynamics (phase diagram, Vector Error Correction Model estimation)

Finally, the lessons drawn by Della Paolera and Taylor are, in my view, very telling to the way Argentina got into the path to the collapse of the currency board 1991-2001.

                            Book Description

From best–selling humorist and business guru Stanley Bing, an indispensable guide for the contemporary working person who is ambitious, greedy and lazy. In his helpful, funny, straight–shooting style, Bing navigates the reader through a tasteful pile of bullshit jobs that pay well and demand very little knowledge or effort.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been so much more..........2007-05-09

This book is in so many ways a gem. Someone needed to get out and talk about how so many jobs in our world today are more about image than about substance. However, Bing decided to turn a wonderful look into the inner workings of the most BS laden jobs ever and turned it into a political platform to rant against right wingers.

Full disclosure, I am a blogger and I had the rare opportunity to become a radio talk show host a few years ago. Two of the jobs in this book were "Blogger" and "Right Wing Radio Talk Show Host." I actually agree with Bing, trying to fill 3 hours of radio time a day involves a surprising amount of BS and I think all radio talk show hosts have various levels of BS in their broadcast.

But it's not just limited to right wing talk show hosts, there are plenty of left wing talk show hosts who are just as bad. I like Ed Schultz and Alan Colmes, but Janeane Garafalo and Wendy Wilde are shrill BSers of the worst sort. I accept Bing is not a right winger, but this book would have been so much more had he been fair and objective. I guess I might be a bit unfair to him but every chance he had at taking deserving shots at both right and left wingers he focused on the right.

Also, Bing wasted time on BS BS jobs. At one point he made the point that being the Yeti was a BS job. That's a little sophomoric even for me.

The book never attempted to delve deep into the subject of BS nor did it try to focus on what exactly made a job full of "it." These were quick summaries and not very insightful. I must say though, Bing is a very good writer and is naturally funny. I had a hard time putting this book down and I would sincerely encourage others to read it despite my criticisms.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Idea.......2007-05-03

This book is a great idea-- it shows that there are plenty of jobs out there for the taking if you have a little creativity, and preferably a good sense of humor. Also check out "Odd Jobs: 101 Ways to Make an Extra Buck." It's similar, but has practical tips and advice on getting all sorts of non-nine-to-five jobs, including the good, the bad, and the really bizarre types of employment available. Either book makes a fun graduation gift.

1 out of 5 stars Unfunny Scott Adams Clone.......2007-04-26

You may get a few chuckles from this author, but to me he comes across more as an idiot than comedian. At least Scott Adams is funny as a "self-proclaimed idiot" who rips corporate America via his Dilbert cartoons and books. This book is somewhat like The Dilbert Principle with the funny parts removed.

2 out of 5 stars Funny but a fluff book.......2007-01-17

I got this book to really learn something (no laughing :)) but it was just a funny read, and not much substance to it. I could not really follow the logic in a lot of places, and I had trouble explaining exactly what the book is about, although I liked the last very last 3 pages. Funny light-reading, if you have the time....

4 out of 5 stars Very funny, accurate satire..........2006-12-23

Confirming much of what I've long suspected, Stanley Bing reveals the B.S. factor of many jobs.

Readable and funny, this book shows that Mr. Bing is a dedicated student of human nature.

                            Recommended.

                              Book Description

The Blue Devils have received very little attention from jazz historians, though the band members and the writer Ralph Ellison (who sometimes sat in with them) spoke with conviction about their sterling musicianship and their legendary ability to defeat all competitors in battles of the bands. In a literal sense, the band survived for ten years, from its founding in 1923 to its demise in 1933. In a figurative sense, the band continued for more than half a century because, as members Jimmy Rushing, Lester "Prez" Young, Oran "Hot Lips" Page, and Count Basie became jazz legends, their "apprenticeship" in the Blue Devils authenticated them as genuine jazzmen, real troupers ready to play for any and all occasions. Chronicling the ten years the band was officially together, Douglas Daniels provides a corrective to most accounts of musical groups. He delves into the potent social and cultural history of the Depression to show its influence on the group's founding as well as on the players' careers. This meticulously researched history of an iconic jazz band rescues them from undeserved obscurity and clears away the fog of neglect.

5 out of 5 stars Rich reporting and jazz music history which cannot be ignored........2006-11-06

ONE O'CLOCK JUMP: THE UNFORGETTABLE HISTORY OF THE OKLAHOMA CITY BLUE DEVILS offers up a wealth of detail on a legendary jazz band from Oklahoma City. They went through many changes from 1923 to 1933, but their legacy has been under-stated until this book, so any avid fan of jazz may know of them, but only in passing. ONE O'CLOCK JUMP fills the gaps, using interviews with the six surviving Blue Devils and others and supplementing these with newspaper accounts of performances and government records. The result is rich reporting and jazz music history which cannot be ignored.

Media Institutions and Audiences completes Nick Lacey's trilogy of self-standing texts that give an in-depth introduction to the key concepts of Media Studies at an advanced and university level. The book delivers a range of theories and contemporary case studies in its coverage of media business and the influence of regulation and censorship. The issues surrounding the growing commodification of media texts, and the increasing influence of marketing and public relations, are considered. The major approaches to understanding audiences are also investigated.

I rented this book from the library, and I absolutly love it. I watch the Murder, She Wrote reruns on A&E and I always look up the episode I'm watching in the book. The Highlights and Trivia sections are great. I also enjoy the biographies of Angela Lansbury and other cast regulars. I highly recomend this book.

1 out of 5 stars Parish tried but didn't make it........2001-02-19

To those who have read Parish's long list of publications it is obvious he didn't write "The Unofficial Murder, She Wrote Casebook" as a bonafide fan of the series. He wrote it as an addition to his list of conquests as a writer on things Hollywood. I like watching the "Murder, She Wrote" reruns on A & E myself. In comparing what Parish writes in the episode descriptions with what goes on in the corresponding episode being aired on TV it is becomming increasingly apparent there are more mistakes in the book than perhaps Mr. Parish would like to admit to. This isn't to say the book is totally useless -- it just means beware of the pitfalls and proceed accordingly. Mr. Parish has done mystery lovers a disservice by not being more careful with his subject matter.

5 out of 5 stars A Magnificent Reminder of a Series Lost but not Forgotten:.......1999-04-16

This book is a reminder of what MURDER, SHE WROTE was. Let it remind all that Murder, She Wrote was one of the most successful dramas with a female leading role ever. And this book also tells some of the unknown secrets, like who Jessica Fletcher was really ment to be, it wasn't Angela Lansbury. However, more importantly, this book lights the way for new Jessica Fletcher fans that are just discovering the wonder of the female writer from Cabot Cove. I personally recomend that all Murder, She Wrote fans get this book. A collection is incomplete with out it.

The Unofficial Casebook is a great guide for fans of the television show especially now that A&E is airing the series. Trivia, highlights, facts on the various actors, and a synopsis of each episode. A must have.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the money and your time ..........2005-08-25

I have read author David Blatner's book on quark and being very familar with that program, I found his book on moving to indesign immensely helpful. You get great tips on how to do things that you have already established in your quark workflow. The index is well organized and a quick reference.

Hard to find what I wanted. Preferred the Sams All in One for Creative Suite 2. Much easier to navigate. This book was a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars It Moved Me!.......2005-08-03

As always with a Blatner book, this guide delivers exactly what it says it will. I was up and running in InDesign in no time and continue to reference its succinct text as I work. I recommend this to anyone who knows Xpress and wants to get InDesign going in a hurry.

4 out of 5 stars For all the switchers to InDesign.......2004-11-01

Many or those who switch to Adobe InDesign from QuarkXpress or PageMaker these days. Those who do might not need a book about everything that InDesign is and is able to do. What they need is a book about the differences in techniques between the applications. Then this book is a good choice. It compares how things were done in QuarkXpress or PageMaker to how it is done in InDesign. If you also want to dig a bit deeper into InDesign you buy both this book and Real World InDesign CS. If you only want to get started and get over the obstacles with changing to new application that in principle does what you have done for years in that other application, but in another way than what you are used to, you chose this book.

I warmly recommend this book, and I use it in courses for switchers to InDesign.
