Rare Political Economy Case Study.......2007-01-28
Comprehensive analysis of the political and economic effects of Keynesianism from a public choice perspective. This is an impressive look at the lasting changes in the economic order since Keynes' ideas were adopted by politicians and influential economists alike.
Keynes never supported deficit finance(or functional finance).......2005-06-26
J. M. Buchanan's(JMB)book is completely mistitled and out of date.Nowhere in any of Keynes's writings does Keynes ever advocate a policy of deficit finance, which is actually the brain child of Abba Lerner,a member of the American Keynesian-Neoclassical Synthesis school of economics.Lerner used the term functional finance to describe deficit finance.During a visit to America in 1944 as the representative of England's Treasury Department,Keynes totally disagreed with Lerner's approach.Keynes's approach is an advanced version of the cyclically balanced budget first laid out in clear terms to the Pharaoh by Joseph some 3,700 years ago-build up a surplus in the good years that will cover the deficits of the bad years. This is the first statement of what economists call a countercyclical fiscal policy.Keynes's additional provision is that the budget be split into two categories-one of which would be a capital budget. The government could only run deficits in the provision of capital projects in public infrastructure(building dams, reservoirs, water projects-irrigation networks, seaports, airports, public transportation projects, public schools, colleges and universities, public research laboratories, etc.,)that would pay for themselves in the long run.Nor was Keynes an advocate of tax cuts in an economic downturn except for temporarily suspending the social security tax for workers only.Keynes's major policy recommendation was the maintenance of low interest rates combined with a central bank policy of eliminating loan availability for speculative undertakings(greenmail, leveraged buyouts, hostile takeovers, margin account loans, corporate raiders, junk bonds,etc.).The correct title for JMB's book up until 1981 is"Democracy with minor to moderate deficits:The Political Legacy of the American Keynesian-Neoclassical Synthesis School".After 1981,JMB should have retitled his book as"Democracy and Catastrophic Deficits:The Political Legacy of Laffer,Reagan, and the 12 years of the Two Bush Presidencies" .The national debt when President Reagan took office stood at 925 billion dollars. As of July,2005,the national debt will have surpassed 8 trillion dollars. The Libertarian-pseudo conservative policies of tax cuts, borrowing and excessive spending of 8 years of Reagan and 12 years of the two Bush presidencies has increased our national debt by a factor of 9.JMB needs to completely rewrite his book.First,he needs to incorporate the theoretical foundations of the story of Joseph and the Pharaoh from the Old Testament. He will probably need to purchase a bible in order to correctly cite verse and page.Second,he needs to obtain a copy of Keynes's General Theory and read what Keynes actually wrote and not what Henry Hazlitt claims what Keynes meant in his 1959 "Failure of the 'New Economics'".
Public-choice perspective of public debt finance.......2004-10-20
The authors offer two main points of criticism of the Keynesian prescription of deficit spending during recession. They first expose the internal inconsistency of Keynesianism that, if it were true, during an economic recession with slack resources, public spending increases could simply be financed by the creation of money rather than the issuance of interest-bearing debt (pp. 34-35).
More important, however, is the authors' public-choice criticism of Keynesianism. The Keynesian doctrine of deficit spending provided the academic excuse for elected representatives to spend without taxing, thus removing the self-imposed discipline of balanced budgets that had existed prior to the adoption of Keynesianist thinking (p. 4): "The legacy or heritage of Lord Keynes is the putative intellectual legitimacy provided to the natural and predictable political biases toward deficit spending, inflation, and the growth of government" (p. 26).
Keynesianism might perhaps work under a system of benevolent dictatorship, but not in a democratic setting with citizens who are both taxpayers and beneficiaries of public services, professional politicians, political parties and government bureaucracy (pp. 79-80). "Political decisions in the United States are made by elected politicians, who respond to the desires of voters and the ensconced bureaucracy. There is no center of power where an enlightened few can effectively isolate themselves from constituency pressures" (p. 98).
Elected public officials display a bias towards spending public funds on projects that yield tangible benefits to their constituents, and towards not encumbering them with a tax bill to pay for those projects. "The pre-Keynesian norm of budget balance served to constrain spending proclivities so as to keep governmental outlays roughly within the revenue limits generated by taxes. The Keynesian destruction of this norm, without an adequate replacement, effectively removed the constraint. Predictably, politicians responded by increasing spending more than tax revenues, by creating budget deficits as a normal course of events" (pp. 95-96).
Buchanan considers the argument of the book that in a democratic setting there is a bias towards deficit finance "perhaps the single most persuasive application of the elementary theory of public choice" (p. xv). Indeed, the reform proposals introduced, particularly the constitutional balanced budget amendment, are to be thought of as "rules...designed to constrain the short-run expedient behavior of politicians" (p. 9).
This is chronologically the first publication on public debt finance in the Collected Works series where Buchanan has proposed a constitutional balanced budget requirement (pp. 166, 183-184, 187-188). Buchanan, more than anyone else, offers the most persuasive argument for such a requirement, and thus this volume is still worthwhile. But volume 14 in the series (Debt and Taxes) offers a richer variety of papers by Buchanan on the subject of public debt finance, including the constitutional balanced budget amendment.

meat packers not of the past but of the future.......2002-06-24
I remember sitting at dinner with Hormel strikers in 1984 or 85, visiting, trying to gain solidarity not only for their strike, but for workers around the country. I remember what they told about what was happening in the meat packing industry in Minnesota, and why the workers in that union fought not just the company, but the union bureaucracy. What they faced then is more like too many workers, not just in the meat packing industry but especially there, face or know they will face soon. This book about the strike is not a sociological or journalistic analysis, but the analysis of a longtime working class leader, who was also one of the central leaders of the anti-Vietnam war movement. In this pamphlet we have the voices and struggle of the Hormel Strikers displayed so that workers of today, around the world, in and out of meat packing can learn from their successes and failures, and use this pamphlet as a weapon in their struggle.

Bitter, mean-spirited "comics" from a hateful drunk.......2006-12-23
Mallard Fillmore must be the single most unfunny comic strip in wide syndication today. But that should come as no surprise, seeing as it comes from a knee-jerk right-winger who was recently arrested for driving under the influence, which shows how little respect for the law and consideration for the safety and well-being of others he actually has.
The hateful, humor-free content does, however, expose the more vicious side of the conservative movement -- and thereby does it no credit. Conservatives do in fact have some good ideas, but they are not well-served by spite-filled "allies" like cartoonist Tinsley.
Maybe if he'd take a hiatus from the concept side of the cartoon and let Dennis Miller do the writing... naah, I doubt Tinsley's smart enough to consider the idea...
We should change the American symbol from the Bald Eagle to the Lame Duck.......2006-07-13
Mallard Fillmore is an embarrassingly excrementitious example of so-called Conservative humor. LAME and ill-informed.
I read it for information and having the guts to say unpopular things about the "tolerant?" left.,.......2006-02-08
Take a look at the negativity directed at my reviews of Boondocks (a current liberal fave) at the hypocrisy its creator calling Rush Limbaugh a racist for involving race in his material, yet Boondocks constantly deals with race
When Al Capp of Lil Abner fame became a conservative in the 60's, suddenly the former liberal darling had his strip drop from 900 to 400 newspapers.
Mallard's author has never condemned Doonsbury or Boondocks for their anti-conservative viewpoints, thus is not guilty of hypocrisy.
I read Mallard Fillmore for news the 90% liberal media will not print like racism and sexism from black leaders and feminists, intolerance from educational systems and unions, etc
Mallard Fillmore is like that All in the Family episode where they are playing a game and the Liberal Mike Stivic, who regulary pats himself on the back for being sensitive toward blacks (unlike the conservative Archie Bunker), can't take the black person Lionel claiming he is insensitive because Mike does it for selfish reasons.
It takes a lot of guts to say negative things about the "tolerant?", hypocrital left, given the intolerance they express when they don't like something, and do it in an entertaining and humorous manner
P.S. Why does amazon allow a no vote. It only creates a situation where people who can't take opinions who differ from themselves to enact petty revenge
Very funny -- and it not the least bit out of date!.......2004-10-29
In a way, it's sad to say that Mallard Fillmore is just as on point today as ever. Liberalism still suffers from the same tried-but-false world views and tactics. No wonder this book receives such diverse reviews -- it lampons the fallacies and faux pas of liberalism very effectively. Best of all, there are no "cheap shots" -- just a very clear mirror on the subject, with enough light to expose the flaws and weakneses in leftist thinking. One of my most treasured books!
THE TRUTH WILL OUT.......2001-08-08
Finally, a comic strip that belongs on the front page! If you are tired of gagging on the poorly drawn, wildly inaccurate doonsebury, then sit back and enjoy a strip that is well-crafted and well-thought out. One has to wonder about some of the reviewers who panned this comic. Did they actually read it- or are they once again mindlessly spewing the party line? If you're tired of the politically correct, touchy-feely, tolerant left-wing media, this strip is a breath of fresh air

Book Description
"Better to remember the good days via those magnificent early records, those mid-period hits, and this likeable volume of memoirs."-Record Collector
"Original guitarist Michael Bruce's book successfully attempts to buy back credit where it was never given."-Mojo
Michael Bruce was guitarist and keyboard player with America's ghoulish rock vaudevillians-the Alice Cooper group. As the melody man within the group's ranks he helped to write many of their classic early seventies tracks. Hit singles like "School's Out" and "Elected" were teenage pop anthems that perfectly encapsulated the decadent spirit of the times, while the band's love for theatrics ran the gamut of mock electrocutions, hangings and guillotinings, creating a larger-than-life personality of singer Alice Cooper.
No More Mr Nice Guy follows the group on a journey from Arizona garage band, through years of being "the band you loved to hate," culminating in their eventual rise to worldwide stardom. Michael Bruce opens the lid on his years with the group, revealing the truth behind the publicity stunts, the dead babies, the drinking, the executions and, of course, the rock 'n' roll.
Customer Reviews:
Belivin The Beatnik.......2004-03-05
Michael has written a brave and adult book that will strike a chord with millions of Alice Cooper fans dismayed at the bands breakup.
Michael's opinion will not be shared by everyone but it is really about time we got a perspective from outside of the Alice Camp who rarely see beyond stary eyed hero worship at best.
The facts do not particularly favour either side. Alice Cooper split up with just one album to make. This deprived the band of some richly deserved royalties but it hardly pointed to Alice jumping ship at the first hint of commercial success. Alice himself points to a band that wanted to ditch theatrics and go more mainstream. True of Michaels solo album, but the Billion Dollar Babies BattleAxe album? and tour with its stageshow designed to rival anything Alice had done? Somehow it seemed hollow.
Michael possibly minimizes the strained relations between the band members at the height of their success. But band members Neal & Dennis were prepared to go on record as saying that current writing was overstating them# (#Bob Greene/Billion Dollar Baby).
Muscle Of Love had resulted in lawsuits which must have put pressure on the bands management. But Warners suing as it was the wrong type of product seems a gas in retrospect given the course Alice's solo career was to take.
Michael's suggestion that it was Shep Gordon who persuaded Alice to leave the band for a 50/50 split will always have some resonance just as long as rock n roll is rock n roll. All major bands have argued over this issue at some point.
Dont know for a fact, will never know for a fact and three decades later dont really want to. My judgement is just a musical one. Alice is for me rock's greatest performer he can make the most ordinary session musicians look great. But without his band he lasted for just one album before thirteen years obscurity set in. Something too many devoted Yes Men! were never concerned about.
Alice for me should have realised that it wasn't working without the band and at least offered the possibility of a reunion even if this meant splitting with his managment. Alice had every right to grow older, get married change priorities. I always had every sympathy for the pressure the original Alice caricature put on him. But what no one can expect is for rock n roll to change with them. It never changes and once the personal stuff came into Alice's music things were going to get tricky.
Michael has written a book for the grown ups and not one for those more comfy with the no drugs just booze all nice guys legend. Michael has rightly or wrongly said what most of us secretly believed. The music industry was wrong. The men in suits were wrong, unforgivably wrong. They all took their piece of Alice and weve all paid our price.
Michael Bruce I hope you live forever in Rock n Roll heaven.(Clarissa Jones)
Excellent!.......2002-07-19
This is an excellent book by Michael Bruce (Alice Cooper Band Original Guitarists) and Billy James (Ant Bee) which follows the Bands History from Arizona to Los Angeles To Michigan to Superstardom. It is well written and tells the story in an engaging way with much humor and candor. This is a MUST HAVE for any Alice Cooper fan and really any Rock Fan.
Thank you MIKE BRUCE!!!!!!.......2001-12-07
A great book that goes right to the heart of The Alice cooper band. I only wish that it was longer. Good content indeed!
Lovely photos and info throughout! If you are a fan of the early AC, READ THIS BOOK! It is essential!
Better Songwriter Than Memoirist - But The Story's Good.......2001-09-16
Maybe Michael Bruce should have hired a ghost writer. But don't hold it against him. Until a better writer happens along, this will probably have to be the definitive account of Alice Cooper's early life - as in, when the name indicated a band first and foremost, even if the lead singer decided to adopt the name as his own stage name, too - if only because it comes from the man who was probably the real most valuable player in the band. Though they began as a gang of rabble-and-rollers who also had a sense of the absurd which veered between the surreal and the downright insane (you have to hear their very first album, the Frank Zappa-produced "Pretties For You," to understand), it didn't take long before Alice Cooper began shaping into a slashing band with hooks to burn - the maturity which began on their second album ("Easy Action") and all but exploded on their third ("Love It To Death") may have been a rather watered-down and cartooned-up version of the Stooges' genuine teenage-wasteland angst, but there was no escaping the quick grip of songs like "Eighteen," "Under My Wheels," "Be My Lover," "Caught In A Dream," "School's Out," "You Drive Me Nervous," "Dead Babies," "Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets," "No More Mr. Nice Guy," and "Billion Dollar Baby." And it was predominantly Michael Bruce - who was actually the better of the band's two guitarists, though fellow guitarist Glen Buxton usually earned the raves for the spiky lead guitar work even when he didn't play it (which, beginning with the impossibly best-selling "Billion Dollar Babies," was damn near all the time; the stories abounded about the band using unseen guitarists to cover for Buxton while Bruce actually switched between lead and rhythm guitar onstage) - who provided the hooks and the overall balanced structure that made the songs workable even without the stage act whose shock value, in hindsight, wore off into self-parody rather quickly.
It probably should have surprised no one that the overworked Alice Cooper fivesome delivered something less than their front line with 1974's "Muscle of Love," but what happened next proves somewhat tawdry - announcing a temporary hiatus for the band, on the pretext of regrouping and refreshing, Cooper the singer cut a well-received solo album ("Welcome To My Nightmare") with most of the band he swiped from Lou Reed (the famed "Rock and Roll Animal" group, spearhead by twin guitar slingers Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner)...and then some solo concerts with a few new variations on his old stage tricks...then another solo album...a few hit singles (especially 1977's surprisingly masterful and haunting ballad, "You And Me")...another couple of solo albums, including a live album at least a third of which was stuff from the old band. Meanwhile, the old band twisted in the wind and figured out the hard way that Alice Cooper the singer had no intention of ever reuniting Alice Cooper the band. (Almost a year and a half later, while Cooper was riding his slowly swelling solo success, the band gave interviews in which they assured one and all that yes, they were only on temporary vacation and they were just waiting for Alice to pass the word it was time to rock again.)
The band was fool enough to try it on their own for awhile (minus Buxton, apparently), changing the name to Billion Dollar Babies, and cutting an album which had plenty missing beginning with the foolishness of their new name. From there, they drifted apart to various ventures none of which came even close to their old glory, and practically the whole world forgot Alice Cooper began as a band name.
As all but the musical director of that band, Bruce has all the reason in the world to be bitter over their shabby treatment. He may not be David Niven as a show business memoirist, but given his limitations as a prose writer he's telling a story fans of the 1970s (remember: Alice Cooper the band was the hottest act in American show business from 1971-73) and of Alice Cooper will want to know, and if you get past his stylistic flaws as a writer you'll be surprised at how well he keeps the bitterness down to a dull roar and still has a stubborn pride in what he did accomplish.
No More Mr.Nice guy is a book for any Alice fan!.......2001-08-27
No More Mr.Nice Guy is a Great book!It is written by Alice Cooper's First Guitarest Mike Bruce! The book tells the story on alot of the albums and tours that Mike was in with Alice! Book Description
Humor and comedy are an integral part of our lives, inviting us to take pleasure at any moment. In
Taking Humour Seriously, Jerry Palmer argues that humor must be taken seriously--as well as in it's "native state"--or else we fail to understand a fundamental dimension of our aesthetic and social culture.
Palmer's book unravels the many-faceted nature of humor--as part of our personalities, our cognitive and emotional processes, and as subject to the social rules which govern our behavior on different occasions. It is an essential element of literary and visual narrative, subject to moral and aesthetic judgement and used as a rhetorical instrument.
Taking Humour Seriously contends that only when these separate elements are analyzed can we approach an understanding of humor.
The book examines the role of humor and comedy in different societies, and the methods of study used--from Freud to anthropology, from literary criticism to biology. It finally examines those things which prevent enjoyment of humour, and explores the values of comedic enjoyment.

I'm very happy with my purchase. There are some very nice glossy full page photos, and it's a very good episode guide. If you really like the show Bonanza then it's an awesome book.
Interesting.......2002-05-08
Useful. However, there were several synopsis errors, which you won't notice unless you actually saw the specific episode.

Best Bonanza book for Bonanza fans!!.......2002-04-05
If you are a true Bonanza fan, this book is the perfect supplement to the tv show. It has all the episodes and guests which helps if you really are a Bonanza fan and collect the episodes. There is also a brief bio on each cast-star which is great (which they were longer, though).

What *else* can you do with wireless technology?.......2005-12-21
So what do you do once you have your wireless router plugged in and your laptop connected to the internet via the airwaves? What more *can* you do, and what if you want to venture beyond the basics? A lot of that is covered pretty well in the book Wireless Network Hacks & Mods For Dummies by Danny Briere and Pat Hurley.

It seemed like (at least to me) getting connected wirelessly used to be more art than science. Now it's pretty easy, and it doesn't take much to make a connection anywhere you happen to be these days. But there's a lot more you can do with wireless technology that perhaps you haven't thought of. For instance, the authors talk about GPS units and how they can connect wirelessly to services to enable you to track your car's location. Given I have a son with diabetes, that's a possibility I plan on exploring so I can sleep better at night. Or let's say that you are a music lover and you want to listen to your tunes all over the house. Using wireless networking, you could set up a wireless jukebox and listen anywhere. Perhaps you're the altruistic type and you just want to share your connectivity with others who need it. There's a *lot* of information in here on how best to do that, both from a security and a technical perspective. Add all that to some very understandable writing on the underlying technologies behind wireless (like 802.11a/b/g, WEP/WPA/WPA2, etc.), and you have a useful and solid book.
Any time I read a title that talks about hacks and mods, I realize that not everything will be applicable or even interesting to me. But if I can come away with a handful of ideas and tips to use and explore, it's worth the read. This book meets that criteria...
Hard to Find a Better Introductory Book.......2005-12-07
If you're thinking about setting up a wireless LAN, you would have to go a long way to find a better book than this one to use as a reference for what you can do with the LAN, the equipment that is available, and how to go about setting it up. This includes everthing from the interface adapters to the access points, hubs, routers and so on.
This may sound strange, but I'd suggest that you read the last chapter first. It's title is 'Top Ten Wi-Fi Security Questions.' Wireless means radio is used for transmitting the data. Radio means that this is being broadcast between the various devices. Someone outside your immediate area, can scan and detect your radios signals that are carrying your data. You can make your LAN secure, but reading this chapter first gives you a good introduction that will help you as you read the rest of the book.
This is a new book. It includes a lot of the newest toys like the cell phone sized Wi-Fi phone. They also cover digital cameras, security devices, all kinds of things that you may not have thought of initially.
