3 out of 5 stars Too Small.......2005-09-19

The book is useful, but it's too small. I didn't see a size listed. This book is only 7"by 5". It makes the exhibits nearly impossible to read without a magnifying glass.

Book Description

Mistrust, argues John O. Whitney, forments meddling corporate bureaucracies that police even the most trivial transactions--squelching innovation and dragging down revenues with crippling administrative overhead. It discourages sales from talking to marketing, marketing to manufacturing, or manufacturing to design. (Or any of them talking to customers of suppliers.) And it provokes harassed managers to endlessly massage their budget and forecast numbers. . .and their superiors to doubt the results they submit.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great insight and sharp wit.......1998-07-10

I loved this book. Whitney uses great examples and a sharp tongue to expose many of the myths of our current management thinking. It is laugh-out-loud funny at points, and his writing style flows very well. There is some very good theory in here.

5 out of 5 stars Protestant Learning for Our Times.......2007-10-17

Based on talks given at Canterbury Cathedral in the weeks before Easter,2005, this beautifully written primer on Christianity by Archbishop Rowan Williams, spiritual leader of the Church of England and 100,000,000 Anglicans worldwide, should be read by anyone interested in the marvellous questions presented: What does it mean to believe in God? Can God be almighty amidst so much evil and disaster? What is the purpose of the church? What does it mean to follow Christ in today's fragmented world?
Once one accepts that God is good and can be trusted, then thought, action and prayer start to make sense. The author discusses statements about belief that were forged in the first three hundred years of the church's history: the creeds. He also examines the records of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.
This is a book to be sipped slowly, reflected upon, discussed. Archbishop Williams shows and shares with the reader what it means to put our hands into the hands of God, "into a darkness that is God's welcoming touch."
A little gem.

4 out of 5 stars A well-written look at the essentials of Christian belief from a more mystical angle.......2007-07-02

This book is based on Rowan Williams' talks in Canterbury Cathedral during Holy Week 2005 and is an introduction to Christianity focusing on six major themes - trusting in God, creation, Jesus, suffering, the church and life after death. These themes are considered with reference to the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed alongside reflections on historical characters such as St Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Martin Luther and modern people and events.

The book doesn't presuppose significant knowledge about Christianity but the writing style is rather wordy and feels a little more academic than usual in books aimed for this market. It isn't the usual checklist of basic Christian beliefs but is instead a well-written and interesting approach in discussing the trustworthy and unchanging love of God and how we begin to live in the light of this knowledge.

    Book Description

First published in 1985, this ground-breaking book surveys the development of Cycladic sculpture produced by unidentified artists who worked in the Aegean islands 4,500 years ago. Illustrated wherever possible with objects from American collections--with particular emphasis on some two dozen
pieces in the Getty Museum--this volume surveys the typological development of Early Cycladic sculpture and identifies, where possible, the work of individual sculptors. Newly revised and updated, this book is a concise introduction to the field.

The Organization Man is history. Taking his place is America's new economic icon: the "free agent"--the job-hopping, tech-savvy, fulfillment-seeking, self-reliant, independent worker. Already 30 million strong, these new "dis-organization" men and women are transforming America in ways both profound and exhilarating. Are you ready for . . . · The Peter-Out Principle: Successor to the famous "Peter Principle," this new rule decrees that when the fun peters out, the talented walk out. · Unschooling: Individual-centered learning like homeschooling and apprenticeships will threaten Ivy League colleges and end high school as we know it. · Individual Public Offerings: The upper echelon of free agents will issue these new "IPOs," or stock . . . in themselves.· E-tirement: When Americans reach age sixty-five, more will enter a new stage of life. Working as full-time, part-time, and anytime free agents, they'll be finding and executing work over the Internet.· Just-in-time Politics: This political version of just-in-time manufacturing will challenge the present two-party system.· The Feminine Century: Women are free agency's early adopters. Many analysts estimate that by the year 2005, half of all businesses will be run by women. In this landmark book, Daniel H. Pink offers the definitive account of this revolution in work. He shows who these free agents are--from the marketing consultant down the street to the home-based "mompreneur" to the footloose technology contractor--and why they've forged a new path. His entertaining and provocative account of the new frontier of work reveals how free agents are shaking up all of our institutions--from politics to education to the family.

5 out of 5 stars The Optimistic Jew.......2007-08-31

By varying accounts there are 25-30 million free agents at present in the United States. Most of these work from home. Add millions of micro-businesses and one comes to the conclusion that the 20th century will be known as the first and last century in which most working people were salaried. Up until the 20th century most working people were small farmers, merchants and independent professionals. If present trends continue - and there is every reason to believe they will - then by the middle of the 21st century most working people will be self-employed in one form or another. This will have revolutionary impact on politics, tax and social policy and the economic balance of power. Cultural attitudes that encourage innovation and risk-taking will have tremendous advantages in this emerging reality. This is why I claim that: "No people on earth (referring to the Jews) are better prepared by virtue of education, temperament and historical adaptability to embrace the challenges of the 21st century". This book provided me with much of the information that enabled me to open my own book "The Optimistic Jew" with the above lines.

                  4 out of 5 stars SOCIAL COMMENTARY DISGUISED AS A HOW-TO GUIDE.......2007-04-25

Free Agent Nation by Daniel H. Pink is not entirely what it seems.

Daniel Pink is a former speech writer for Al Gore. He wrote for him when Al Gore was serving as Vice President, but not during the campaign for president.

When Mr Pink left the White House and became, as it were, a Free Agent, he was surprised at the number of people who earned income from running their own small business. It became apparent to him that if the Republican Party was the party of big business and the Democratic Party was the party of labor unions, then the growing demographic of the self employed had no real representation.

Therefore, Mr Pink explored who these people were, what they were doing, and what they needed. Of course, Mr. Pink is no economist or statistician. Therefore, his analysis seems a bit heavy on the anecdotal. Likewise, this is not a how to book that will tell you step by step what needs to be done to start up your own business.

Regardless, this is an interesting book that explores a growing social phenomenon of the post-industrial world.

If you've been thinking of going out on your own, Daniel Pink will motivate you. Without writing a motivational book at all, he has succeeded in showing the reader why being a Free Agent is the way to go in the new economy of the 21st Century.

4 out of 5 stars Salarymen can learn something too.......2006-10-24

In 2006 we are way past the industrial age, and especially so in the TV and entertainment business. Our products are at the forefront -- but what about our ways of working? This book mostly addresses how people work as independents, but has a lot one can learn for how the local and multi-national work environment could be configured better. It's a bit U.S.-centric, but other countries, especially in hi-tech, are not far behind.

                    Book Description

With its wealth of information on how technique can be tastefully applied, Back-Up Banjo is the definitive book on the subject of banjo accompaniment. Since a banjo player in a band plays accompaniment at least 75% of the time, it is extremely important to master playing in this style. Janet Davis offers specific suggestions for accompanying a vocalist or instrumentalist in a variety of styles-- and then provides musical examples illustrating her points. Janet breaks her concepts down into their basic components, making them crystal clear in lay terms. The various back-up techniques are separated into categories determined by song tempo, by lead instrument being accompanied, and by the area of the fingerboard in which the chords are being played. In notation and tablature.

This set includes a companion 2-CD set which demonstrates the examples in the book.

Great book. Typical clear Janet Davis writing and tabs. Has many exercises. Good section with tab for melody followed by tab for back-up. Tape record one and play the other against it!

I bought this book along with the accompanying CD and I find it very helpful as I try to teach myself the banjo. The book is able to give you good techniques for playing back-up on the banjo with many different roll and picking patterns. The CD is great because it helps you hear how you are supposed to sound. There may be better books out there, but this one is definately a useful tool if you like to use many different books when learning an instrument.

                      Book Description

This book considers in depth the emergent theme of concerns over bodily fluids in health and wellness through an examination of a rich set of ethnographic materials from the Pacific islands of New Guinea. The particular structure of the book draws together otherwise disparate observations made by ethnographers on ideas of the body. It helps to reveal how these are related to ideas of sickness and curing, of witchcraft, of cannibalism, of gender relations, and of ecology and ritual. It facilitates cross-cultural comparisons with other parts of the world, as well as making clear the fundamental similarities between the societies of Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea. It also discusses the idea of the cosmos and its centrality to ideological representations of the physical and social body. Society is seen to be part of the cosmos, and the human body directly linked to, and in cyclical flow with, the elements of the life-world in general, and society in particular.

I thought this book was a very good over-view of different classic TV theme songs...but there were a few problems with it. As with Javna's other books, it seemed to be thrown together, and not carefully checked: for instance, some of the trivia was incorrect. I think it is a handy book to have around just in case you feel like plunking the "Mr. Ed" theme song out on the piano...but definitely not a theme-song bible.

Its list ranges from the Beverly Hillbillies to Hawaii Five-O to the original lyrics for I Love Lucy. Each theme song contains detailed information on the TV show, interesting facts, and fun trivia questions. This book gave me something to do for days. This book is great for TV fans of all ages and a must for theme song lovers.
