Book Description
This book is a guide to how economic policy is made in modern Britain. It is designed to help the reader understand how the policy process works: who the key actors are, the links and the gaps between theory and practice, and the difficulties of making policy in the real world. It looks at how the implementation of theory and the development of policy is affected by the historical and international contexts in which policy-makers have to operate; the difficulty of being certain about which competing theory to choose; and the need to take account of political feasibility as well as economic desirability.

Book Description
This book makes Keynes's writing on his General Theory accessible to students by presenting this theory in a careful, consistent manner that is faithful to the original. Keynes's theory continues to be important, because the issues it raised, such as the problems of involuntary unemployment, the volatility of investment, and the complexity of monetary arrangements in modern capitalist economies, are still with us. Keynes's method of analysis, which tries to allow for the complications of dealing with historical time, deserves the careful attention given in this book. Keynes's formal analysis dealt only with a short period of time during which changes in productive capacity as a result of net investment were small relative to initial productive capacity. Roy Harrod and Joan Robinson were the two most prominent followers of Keynes who attempted to extend his analysis to the long period by allowing for the effects of investment on productive capacity as well as on effective demand. The careful examination of their writings on this topic is a natural complement to the presentation of Keynes's General Theory and makes clear the severe limitations on any use of equilibrium concepts in dealing with accumulation in models that try to observe Keynes's warnings about an unknowable future in the type of world we inhabit.

Asimakopulos overlooked Keynes's mathematical modeling.......2005-03-24
The major conclusion that Asimakopulos(A)reaches in this book is that Keynes had no correctly defined and mathematically accurate representation of his theory of effective demand in the General Theory(GT;1936)that had a sound foundation in microeconomic theory. Thus, the GT must be rewritten and/or interpreted(reinterpreted)so as to correctly ground the intuitively correct ideas of Keynes on a sound foundation of microeconomic analysis. The foundation that A argues the GT should be based on is either the imperfectly competitive analysis of Richard Kahn and Joan Robinson or the more advanced version of the GT that Joan Robinson claimed that Michel Kalecki had written in explicitly mathematical terms three years before Keynes published his GT.The major criticism of A is that he completely overlooks the explicit mathematical model constructed by Keynes in chapters 20 and 21 of the GT.The model constructed by Keynes has an explicit microeconomic foundation based on a theory of the firm called pure competition. It is identical to the free competition assumption made by Pigou in 1933 in his book The Theory of Unemployment. This conclusion is obvious to any reader of the appendix to chapter 19 of the GT.Unfortunately, there is no evidence that A ever read Pigou's book or chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT.A bases his entire assessment of Keynes's technical capabilities on a reading of pp.24-30 of chapter 3 of the GT alone.A's failure to read chapters 19,20,and 21 of the GT account for his mistaken belief that Keynes's analysis is unclear, ambiguous, confusing, incomplete, and problematic.
A must have for students of Keynes' ideas.......2001-03-25
If you ever tried to read Keynes's General Theory you know pretty well that some of Keynes's main ideas and some of his expositions of these same ideas are pretty confusing. It is well known by now that Keynes was in a hurry to get his book published and this is probably the reason why the GT is so hermetic. Asimakopulos goes a long way in explaining Keynes's ideas or, more precisely, some possible interpretations of these ideas in a simple and convincing manner. He also gives us two most wanted chapters with analysis of the works of two distinguished disciples of Keynes (i.e, Joan Robinson and Roy Harrod) and their attempts to extend his work to a dynamic framework. Of course, Asimakopulos' is not the only interpretation of Keynes'work. There is a whole "Keynes industry" in this world. It is, however, a short, advanced and neatly written piece of work and I consider it a must have especially for those who want a quick start on the topic.
Book Description
This wonderful collection of the best and funniest cartoons published over the last eighty years in The New Yorker takes a wry look into the classroom--at the students, at thier blindly devoted but demanding parents, and especially, at the teachers who negotiate the delicate balance between those forces every day. With 118 cartoons, this is a perfect gift for teachers and a treasure of laughs for all!

Elementary, Middle, or High?.......2007-09-25
I received this wonderful book as a gift when I graduated with my master in teaching. It contains plenty of treasures, but I wanted to caution gift givers that the cartoons here are very heavy on the elementary school commentary. As a high school teacher, I didn't find a ton that were really applicable to my daily experiences. Still though, I've enjoyed flipping through it and chuckling at the lil'uns.
GREAT Teacher gift.......2007-01-09
I gave this book to my kids' teachers as well as to several family members. I have never had such enthusiastic thank you's from not just one, but 4 teachers! The book is clever and thoughtful and appreciated by the profession.
The New Yorker Book of Teacher Cartoons.......2006-08-13
Great stuff for teachers. I'm going to give it to my daughter who is a teacher.
Reviewing the New Yorker.......2006-08-02
Being a teacher and a subscriber to The New Yorker for 20+ years puts me in a subjective mode as I review THE NEW YORKER BOOK OF TEACHER CARTOONS.
The bargain-combo price..I purchased the Kid's Cartoons as well- for the new books gives me further incentive to offer a 5 Star review.
A Below-Average Collection of New Yorker Cartoons.......2006-07-28
The best cartoons give us a new look at ourselves and our world. Outstanding cartoons may even cause us to laugh at ourselves and our follies.
Likewise, great cartoon collections need a lot of great and outstanding cartoons across a range of subjects. Unfortunately, although The New Yorker Book of Teacher Cartoons has some fine ones . . . they mostly seem to play on three notes (excuses for not having homework done, the decline in educational standards, and the double speak that afflicts many school conversations).
I also prefer a cartoon collection to be connected to a well-written essay that expands beyond the boundaries of the cartoons into broader themes. As often is the case with collections of New Yorker cartoons, this one lacks such an essay.
Let me praise what is good in the collection. Anyone would enjoy the following work:
Edward Fascino's "Mrs. Hammond! I'd know you anywhere from little Billy's portrait of your" -- which displays a crudely drawn woman walking into the classroom in best second grade style.
Roz Chast's "Berlitz Guide to Parent-Teacher Conferences"
Barbara Smaller's "Where do you get off saying my kid is grade level?"
Barbara Smaller's "No one's last words were 'I wish I'd done more homework.'"
Con Day's image of a bus driver with a mask on which faces backwards towards the students.
William Haefeli's "We've created a safe, nonjudgemental environment that will leave your child ill-prepared for real-life."
Barbara Smaller's "So what if he paid a classmate to do his homework -- it was his own allowance."
George Booth's "Sarah's grades are excellent. She got A+ in 'Yogi Berra: Philosopher or Fall Guy?,' . . . ."
Al Ross's "Miss Jones, may I go home and watch television?"
Bernard Schoenbaum's "Now you're probably all asking yourselves, 'Why must I learn to read and write?'"
Bernard Schoenbaum's "I don't have an answer, but you've sure given me a lot to think about."
Mike Twohy's "Big deal, an A in math. That would be a D in any other country."
Barbara Smaller's "A lot of homework?"
Barbara Smaller's "Please remind your mom and dad that it's a parent-teacher conference, not a parent-teacher-attorney conference."
Michael Maslin's "I don't have my homework, Miss Flynn -- my parents forgot to do it."
P.C. Vey's "'No More School: A Dream Unfulfilled,' by Howard Willocoski."
Bernie Wiseman's image of a teacher at the backboard watching her class using a rear view mirror attached to the wall.
Danny Shanahan's images of children carrying large backpacks walking past a door that says "School Chiropractor".
Unlike the image on the book's jacket, all of these cartoons are in black-and-white.
I advise against giving this book as a gift to a teacher. It may not be well received.
Book Description
If one band could be said to symbolize British punk in its heyday, that band is The Clash. As a young journalist on tour with all of punk's biggest names, Kris Needs forged lifelong friendships with The Clash while witnessing their wild exploits firsthand. One of the first journalists to see the band live, Needs championed them from the start, becoming close friends with Joe Strummer and the rest of the group, accompanying them on many major tours, and being present at pivotal moments in their career. Combining his own anecdotal and press material from the era with a wealth of biographical detail and photographs, Needs illuminates the legend with accounts of life-changing gigs, on-the-road antics, and the recording sessions that produced the critically revered and ever-popular albums. The book pays special attention to the late Joe Strummer — his motivations and passions and his place as a punk pioneer.
Customer Reviews:
Soak up this book!!.......2007-05-25
This "you're right there book" inspires and grabs you. Joe Strummer and The Clash are some of the greatest artists and original creators of all time. Author Kris Needs keeps you hooked. Fill your soul with Joe Strummer. Like a cosmic twin of John Lennon--he is raw, genuis, powerful, loving!!!
A genuine, funny book that portrays The Clash as real people rather than inaccessible rock icons.......2005-10-03
Kris Needs' 'Joe Strummer & The Legend of The Clash' is the most fun that you'll have with a book on this legendary band. The author hung out with the group during the heyday of punk and recounts many amusing anecdotes from this period.
His reminiscences go a long way to dispelling the myth of the band as a quartet of humourless political activists and give a genuine sense of Messrs Strummer, Jones, Simonon and Headon's true personalities. In addition to exploring the indvidual band member's fun-loving natures, Needs exposes the interpersonal dynamics within the group and the way in which outside forces caused Strummer to sack both Mick Jones and Topper Headon, thus effectively destroying the band.
The two decades following The Clash's split are comprehensively described and the section recalling Joe's untimely death from an undiagnosed congenital heart condition are especially moving.
If you want to know what The Clash were really like, then you should check out this lively, entertaining book.

Book Description
The body occupies a prime position in contemporary theoretical work, yet there is no consensus on what it is and what constitutes it. Contested Bodies brings together a number of different accounts and perspectives on the body, drawing out some of the connections and disjunctures from this most contested of topics. From revealing attempts at applying abstract body theory to real bodies, to an examination of the consumption of princess's bodies in popular culture and thoughts on the 'virtual' nature of the transgendered body, this volume features fresh and fascinating contributions from some of the leading thinkers and upcoming theorists in the field.

Importance on the concept of citizen rights.......2003-11-06
While we are protesting for more rights and priviledges in our society, it's worth to take into consideration that what is meant by citizen rights and a more important concept, citizenship, which is always neglected by many liberalists and human rights concern groups. The book gives a clear and comprehensive outline on the concept of citizenship, the possible conflicts between rights and duties.
Book Description
This book makes available in English the four key proposals on constitutional reform already in the public domain in Japan. The book is unique in that it is the only book to bring together these documents (some of which are presented in English translation for the very first time) all in one volume. These proposals form the backdrop against which the constitutional debate will evolve. Hook and McCormack place these documents in their historical and contemporary context, providing an analysis of their meaning in the development of post-war thinking on the constitution.

Book Description
Determining which moral principles should guide political action is a vexing question in political theory. This is especially true when faced with the "toleration paradox": believing that something is morally wrong but also believing that it is wrong to suppress it. In this book, Alex Tuckness argues that John Locke's potential contribution to this debate--what Tuckness terms the "legislative point of view"--has long been obscured by overemphasis on his doctrine of consent. Building on a line of reasoning Locke made explicit in his later writings on religious toleration, Tuckness explores the idea that we should act politically only on those moral principles that a reasonable legislator would endorse; someone, that is, who would avoid enacting measures that could be self-defeating when applied by fallible human beings.
Tuckness argues that the legislative point of view has implications that go far beyond the question of religious toleration. Locke suggests an approach to political justification that is a provocative alternative to the utilitarian, contractualist, and perfectionist approaches dominating contemporary liberalism. The legislative point of view is relevant to our thinking about many types of disputed principles, Tuckness writes. He examines claims of moral wrong, invocations of the public good, and contested political roles with emphasis on the roles of legislators and judges. This book is must reading not only for students and scholars of Locke but all those interested in liberalism, toleration, and constitutional theory.

Effective Media Relations: How to Get Results .......2007-04-02
got it for work- very goodbook, prompt delivery
Basic introduction to media relations.......2006-12-23
This book provides a basic introduction to working with the print and broadcast media in the United Kingdom. It starts with an overview of modern press history, including major developments in Germany and France. While this section of the book is interesting and informative, its relationship with the rest of the content is somewhat unclear. The book's hands-on value emerges when the narrative moves onto practical questions, discussing how to deal with print reporters, hold press conferences, issue press releases and prepare for TV and radio interviews. First-timers will appreciate the helpful checklists in this section. We recommend this elementary media relations book to new staffers who are working with the media, particularly in the U.K., and to those who are intrigued by media history.

Customer Reviews:
Great pocket introduction for beginners!.......2005-05-13
I've read the author's "Digital Photography All In One Desk Reference for Dummies" and "Mastering Digital SLR Photography" and feel fortunate that he is one of the few photographers writing these books among the glut of computer book writers taking a stab at it. So, I purchased this book as an introductory guide for my wife, expecting to find the same clear, accurate coverage of digital photography. I was not disappointed.
All the basics are here, general enough to cover any brand of digital camera, but specific enough to be of use. Because it really is a "quick reference" it will not be the only digital photo book you need. However, it has good information for the beginner and can be used as a reference to answer quick questions. More advanced photographers should avoid this book, because it really is just an intro.
You're a dummy if you buy this book !.......2005-04-08
Poorly written, little useful information on Digital Photography.
The photos inside the book are very poorly printed Black and White photos. My old copy machine would do a better job.
Pathetic effort at Digital Photography, the author should stay with computer books.
Be warned, don't waste your money !
