    Book Description

This monograph discusses Lundberg approximations for compound distributions with special emphasis on applications in insurance risk modeling. These distributions are somewhat awkward from an analytic standpoint, but play a central role in insurance and other areas of applied probability modeling such as queueing theory. Consequently, the material is of interest to researchers and graduate students interested in these areas. The material is self-contained, but an introductory course in insurance risk theory is beneficial to prospective readers. Lundberg asymptotics and bounds have a long history in connection with ruin probabilities and waiting time distributions in queueing theory, and have more recently been extended to compound distributions. This connection has its roots in the compound geometric representation of the ruin probabilities and waiting time distributions. A systematic treatment of these approximations is provided, drawing heavily on monotonicity ideas from reliability theory. The results are then applied to the solution of defective renewal equations, analysis of the time and severity of insurance ruin, and renewal risk models, which may also be viewed in terms of the equilibrium waiting time distribution in the G/G/1 queue. Many known results are derived and extended so that much of the material has not appeared elsewhere in the literature. A unique feature involves the use of elementary analytic techniques which require only undergraduate mathematics as a prerequisite. New proofs of many results are given, and an extensive bibliography is provided. Gordon Willmot is Professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science at the University of Waterloo. His research interests are in insurance risk and queueing theory. He is an associate editor of the North American Actuarial Journal.

I have used this in my classroom, both for reading to the students, and for having them read aloud! It has been great fun!

3 out of 5 stars Whimsical, cute and funny!.......2005-05-06

Bruce Lansky asked almost six thousand children and teachers to choose their favorite funny poems. The results: Rolling in the Aisles, a collection of fun, witty and whimsical poems for children.

I'm always looking for funny little songs and poems to sing and read to my grandchildren, and this book will go a long way in satisfying my continuing search. The poems are whimsical, cute, funny and at times so wise. The illustrations are in black and white but will interest children of all ages.

                            Book Description

It’s only natural that rock and roll — “the devil’s music” — and Satanism should be intimately linked. Lucifer Rising explores this unique cultural confluence. Divided into three parts, the book first traces the history of Satanism, from the birth of the Black Mass through the fashionable sinners of the Hellfire Club. The second section examines Satanism in the 20th century, including Aleister Crowley, the formation of the Church of Satan, the Manson Family, and the rise of occult-influenced bands like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. The book’s third part looks at the new waves of Thrash Metal, Death Metal, and the Scandinavian Black Metal scene; the murder case surrounding the band Burzum; the neo-Nazi element; and the religious right’s courtroom pursuit of heavy metal. Lavishly illustrated throughout with graphics, medieval woodcarvings, and stunning photographs, the book also contains entertainingly cynical comment from Anton LaVey, in one of his last in-depth interviews.

With photographs and artwork from self- described Satanists, this elaborately researched look at the nature of evil sheds light on -- and makes light of -- popular culture's darkest secret. Lucifer Rising includes a history of occult- influenced rock music as well as candid interviews with modern- day Satanists and controversial rock stars who confirm that the dark side is indeed the religion of the rebel.

I've actually read the book twice in case I missed anything "important" the first time around which I didn't. This book took 8 years to write but I'm not sure I understand why it took so long to write. He's compiled a lot of information on people behind the scene he's writing about which is a nice touch but it doesn't do much for what the book purports itself to be. I liked the inclusion of many interviews and asides from Anton LaVey but having so many asides in the book seemed like a great way to fill pages instead of writing cogent material.

About three chapters in, I got the feeling that Gavin wrote the book to say nothing more than "I hate Christians, they're all stupid sheep" since that's the heavy overtone for the entire book. This is implied overtly and quite plainly in text and extremely implied by the writer's continual defaming tone over the course of the book.

I think Baddeley was more interested in putting names into the book people would recognize than writing source material that's insightful and gives meaning to the modern Satanist movement. Compared to /Lords of Chaos/, this book seems more like a "who's who" that attriute themselves in various ways to Satanism and Baddeley even goes so far as to include derogatory remarks about the previously mentioned book in his, seems like a low blow for a well respected journalist to take.

Having read this book, I ceased to read anything Baddeley has written since because I realize that he half researches many things, loves heresay, and thinks far more of himself than is true.

If you want to know how modern Satanism, read something such as /Hell's Dominion/ and other books written by people in theological circles.

A book that documents the so-called Satanic Culture of the previous century from the middle ages to the present trendy days of the "modern" era, LUCIFER RISING is a title that is hauled from a movie written and directed by famed warlock and Alister Crowley follower Kenneth Anger, who've the reputation as the one commisioned for hollywood's official consultant regarding the occult, and is said to be the very real founder of the group known as the Church of Satan, and that its said founder Anton LaVae is nothing more but a hired hand for Anger to use as his front act spokesperson for the said group.

Written by a journalist who is subscribed to the said organization's ideals, and mainly to its founder Anton LaVae, its author Gavin Baddeley is obviously inclined sympathetically sided under that context, which leaves a half baked picture obviously in the process regarding the subject. But in spite of that, Baddeley have been fair enough to show the results and breakaways that took place upon the group which is propped by LaVae, mainly after the said founder's demise, allegedly on the eve of Halloween 1997- when according to medical records, LaVae passed away not until the second of November, absolutely way past Halloween as reflected from the accounts found in this book regarding greedy rivalries with LaVae's widowed Nth wife and child, along with Lavae's two other daughters, regarding the rights for the said organization he had founded, with accounts ranging from its (nearly whitewashed) history and people/celebrities who have been said to've been involved with the group, from Sammy Davis to Marilyn Manson.

The book also dwelt for quite some deal in its pages about the satanic culture's connection and involvement with Rock music - in particular to the Death/Black Metal genre - in which case, it seems to be that Didrik Soderlind's book LORD'S OF CHAOS: The Bloody Rise Of Satanic Heavy Metal comes as a better equivalent regarding the subject matter (who's author is also featured in this book as well by the way), while this one apparently goes very much confined only with Baddeley's perspective and personal knowledge on its whole.

Howevcr, this work by Baddeley comes as very comprehendsive enough within certain aspects in its account, such as the ones for the satanic sects that came out from the last quarter of the previous century (ie. The Temple of Seth/UK, The Worldwide Satanic Church Liberation (Paul Valentine), Order of Satanic Templars (Raymond Bogart), Kerk Van Satan's Walburga Abbey, The Electric Hell fire Club, The Temple ov Psychic Youth (Genesis P. Orridge), Order of the Left Hand Path, The Luciferian Lightgroup, The Process Church (Robert de Grimstone), the graphic artist Coop, and the group founded by LaVae's daughter Zeena with her husband Nicolas Shreck along with Boyd Rice - The Werewolf Order), and the tragic Charles Manson killings that occured in the late 60's amongst few others.

Filled with some number of black and white pictures all throughout its 18 chapters, LUCIFER RISING may not be that too completely comprehensive regarding the subject matter of cult groups and the culture it purveys within the field of the entertainment industry on music, movie, and literature along with the social influences that it could generate -- but however, it is a fine reader to pass away the time somehow.

                            AVE REGGIE SATANAS? Nah,

only for peeps who're disillusioned themselves maybe, due to some childhood heartache that took place in their childhood years that they got carried on with to their adult life - like due to some divorce of parents, perhaps...

I enjoyed the book a lot but I preferred it being a little more non biased, information does come best from the source and it was very informative...however the fact that it was all coming from a self proclaimed Satanist was a bit appalling simply because I want to read facts not propaganda it's still a great read. I don't choose sides because truth doesn't have a side...Lords of Chaos is a very good book to accompany this one as well as raising hell and a field guide to demons...anything by Richard Cavendish is also a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Fathers of Black Metal.......2004-05-17

Written by Church of Satan Priest Gavin Baddeley, a book of this kind is easily in the ranks with 'Satan Wants You' by Arthur Lyons, as the credits & influences The Church of Satan has had on society & modern culture is fully recognized, thereby giving the Devil His due.

There are compelling interviews with Dr. LaVey {whose words are spread throughout the book as relative to the subject of the chapter at hand}, Magistra Blanche Barton, High Priest Peter Gilmore, a two-parter with Mgr. Boyd Rice; Thomas Thorn of EHC; iconoclastic film-maker & long-time friend of Doctor's Kenneth Anger; Vincent Crowley of Acheron; Abaddon of Venom; Quarthon of Bathory; Coop; Mgr. Rex Diabolos Church {whose artistry adorns the front cover}; Timothy Patrick Butler; Michael Moynihan of Blood Axis; Count Grishnacht & Euronymous of the 'Black Metal Circle' {a couple of pretentious & antagonistic delusionals who declared 'war' on The Infernal Empire. As a consequence of their absurd proclamations, which can be compared to the flea crawling up an elephant's leg with the intention of rape, one killed the other, both of whom declared eachother 'allies' reveal themselves herein to be nothing more than reverse-xians, still praddling about under the xian mythology, many times veering towards Tolkien's fantasy world - they very easily could be considered "Tolkienists", rather than Satanists {by their own admission, they would rather call themselves 'devil-worshippers' & 'slaves of Satan', dedicated to bringing about the most misery they can upon the world - just like xoids, whom they claim to respect, as they are, verily, brothers in arms, or 'black sheep'. In the same herd/flock; then there's Glenn Danzig, Glen Benton of Deicide, King Diamond {who is accredited with the use of 'corpse-paint' for use by contemporary Death-Metallers}, Sister Namaah of The Kirk Von Satan {a veritable 'Satanic Nun'}, amongst others.

The book is divided into three parts:

                            1. The History of Satanism, which covers the basic inceptions, superstitiions, & practices of the aristocracies in indulgence, & the revolution of The Black Mass.

                            2. Satanism in The 20th Century, which includes historical recollections & occultic ties of The Third Reich, Gerald Gardner {the comical origin of 'wicca', which is about as 'ancient' as the turn of the century}, & serial killers Richard Ramirez & David Burkowitz, among others.

                            3. The Satanic Millenium, explains the Infernal rise of the internet, diabolical board games, Columbine, Marilyn Manson, the afore-mentioned 'Black Metal Circle', & the future influences of Satanism upon the world.

Lucifer Rising takes on where Satan Wants You leaves off, & is a must for Satanists to possess - indeed, it is absolutely a part of Church of Satan history. This book is unprecedented, as it is a record written by a Satanist, someone who knows what we're all about, & thus takes an objective view on the subject, instead of the usual biased & bigoted misrepresentations of xoid Satanophobes. A real work of art.

                            Hail Gavin Baddeley! Hail Satan!

                            5 out of 5 stars Lucifer's Rise in pop-culture........2004-04-06

Gavin Baddeley's _Lucifer Rising: Sin, Devil Worship and Rock n' Roll_ is a journalistic outtake on Satanic themes in modern pop-culture. This British author is hardly objective, a Satanist himself (his name has "bad" in it!) and as such, the book offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the minds of those who feel inspired by Satan. Or more accurately, by the notion of rebellion against the "restrictive" God of Bible and Church. The tone of _Lucifer Rising_ is the same as that of the narrator-announcer on VH1's _Behind the Music_ series: pretentious and self-authoritative. It is filled with interviews, illustrations of demons, sacrilegious artwork (a painting of St. Anthony the Great tempted with a vision of a beautiful naked woman on a cross, for example), and of course, with more then a few photographs of voluptuous naked women featured in occult ceremonies. Much of the imagery either blends the characteristics of male and female or promotes a radical sexual polarity, including S&M scenes, abstinence a definite taboo in Satanism. Baddeley begins by tracing the origins of Satanism from Old Testament times, where it grew as an offshoot of heretical sects including Gnostics, various backwoods pagan customs and as a direct inversion of Christian belief, moral authority and ritual. In the 1700s odd beliefs and Luciferian thinking may have even been an impetus for the Founding Fathers when they gathered together in their lodge meetings to draw up the laws of the United States. Alestier Crowley was certainly the most influential occultist in the early 20th century, spreading bizarre ideas in his numerous books on the occult and the coming new age. German contemporaries of Crowely, postulated strange theories that would later be integrated into the politics of the Nazi Party. Guido von List and Lanz von Liebenfels published writings that Hitler read avidly, in the journal _Ostara_ on the divine nature of the Germanic race. The 1960s aesthetic, atheistic, dilettante and speculative Satanism of Anton LaVey is especially examined in depth. LaVey's version of Satanism is a combine of blasphemous rituals mocking the sacred realm of Christianity, with a doctrine of hedonism and an atheistic metaphysical worldview. His "Church of Satan" does not literally believe in a devil, but rather in atheism, which is logical because a literal worship of an evil, demonic entity would therefore presuppose the existence of a good, creator God who allowed the devil to rebel in the first place. LaVey, misanthropic, elitist and misogynist in his views, also cursed the hippie movement for its optimism, espousal of brotherly love and utopian idealism. In the 1960s, Satan became the favorite icon of Rock n' Roll bands, many musicians employing satanic imagery, inverted crosses and gothic, morbid negative themes in their lyrics and concerts. Baddeley examines in considerable detail the satanic elements in popular music, from the Beatles, Rolling Stones to punk rock and heavy metal all the way up to the 1990s. Some Scandinavian heavy-metal heads, as chronicled by the self-proclaimed Pagan Michael Moynihan, have been involved in the heavy metal scene have been involved in violence, church burnings, and of course in promoting a virulent form of anti-Christianity. Baddeley interviews Moynihan about the "Faustian spirit of Fascism," derived from Spengler's theory of the cyclic rise and fall of cultures (accompanied by a photograph of the androgynous Marilyn Manson in a Nazi pose). A common theme among fringe Satanic cults is that they embrace the idea that the West is in a state of total decline and that the world is soon to embark in a downward spiral of chaos and bloodshed and the revival of paganism. These self-proclaimed Satanists are quick to explain that they are not affiliated with "Wicca" or white magic because of because of Wicca's philanthropist and egalitarian outlook. Satan has even become a popular character in comic books, movies and even video games in addition to youth-culture music. Several notorious serial killings, such as those of Charles Manson and Son of Sam had dark, occulted inspirations. Satan is an appealing character because he represents a youthful rebellion against an established order that certain occultists with an agenda want to attack--stable society and especially the Christian religion. _Lucifer Rising_ is an interesting look at some of the wicked elements in the undertow of Western society in the past fifty years. Satanists like Baddeley claim en masse that without the devil there would have been no Christianity. However, such a stance begs the question: where would Satan and his angels be if there is no God for them to rebel against?

                              Book Description

Producing Dreams, Consuming Youth takes us behind the scenes in San Antonio, Texas, a major market for Mexican American popular culture. Through the voices of those who produce and consume mass media, we see how the media brings together communities of Mexican Americans as they pursue cultural dreams, identification, and empowerment.

At the heart of this book is a debate about the future of Mexican American media, and thus of the youth market. How do media professionals imagine ethnic youths? How do young Mexican Americans accept, negotiate, and resist these images of themselves? Producing Dreams, Consuming Youth emphasizes the paradoxes of media industries that seek to include youths of color while profiting from their creative energies.

This is the sort of autobiography you would expect from The Brigadier. Solid, dependable, traditional...but Nicholas Courtney isn't the Brigadier, and this also tells the story of his off-screen life, and life before Doctor Who stardom.

The first part of the book tells the story of the actor's early life, his parent's separation. Then follows the customary section on National Service, weekly rep, meeting Donald Wolfit and John Geilgud. It's good to hear Nick tell the familiar "actor's autobiography", because his style is friendly, humorous, and honest. This makes the book so enjoyable that the pages zoom by. We learn about the author's successes with the ladies, and, to his credit, his failures, and the breakdown of his marriage is dealt with in what seems to be a very honest manner.

The section on his Doctor Who work is well-written, and leaves out a lot of familiar material. This could be due to the work of Courtney's editor, John Nathan-Turner. For whatever reason, this remains fresh and exciting even thirty years after the fact.

The last part of the book details the post-Doctor Who work, and it is remarkable to see that since Courtney stopped being a Doctor Who regular in 1974 he has played the Brig no fewer than seven times. His work continues of course on the Doctor Who audio adventures, but this book was written before they had been established.

The large format suits his story well, allowing space for many rare and well-researched photographs. There are a few too many blank spaces for my liking, and some unnecessary tributes from those who have worked with him. He could also have cut down the number of references to Equity, the actors' union. Other than that, this is a first class read, and tells a more interesting story than the well-worn convention anecdotes, or sections in general Doctor Who books.

5 out of 5 stars Five Rounds Rapid.......2000-10-29

An excellent book by the only man who has really seen the series from the very beginning. He is the only actor to have worked with all the actors to have played the Doctor. Thanks to the Big Finish audios he has appeared with the 6th Doctor and will be appearing with the 8th when Paul McGann returns to the roll next year. He rarely does conventions any more and, when he does, refuses to tell some of the stories he's famous for.

5 out of 5 stars A brief moment of escape.......2000-10-27

All of my life, I have been a no-nonsense man, who knows nothing but work. In 1986, I began to watch Dr. Who, just as a whim in a miltary barracks, on a TV set in the barrack day room that was chained to the floor so no one would steal it. At first it seemed rather cheesy, but then I found that I could not miss a single episode and if I had to miss it, I would record it. Once, I brought a VHS out to a live fire gunnery tank range, where we were to fire all day and all night for two nights.

In one of the tents where the crews were de-briefed and rested, I set up a small TV and the VHS and powered it up by using a military 15kw gas generator. We and the tank crews of my battalion watched Dr. Who.

My first experience with Dr. Who were the Pertwee years and the Brigadier played a large roll. I enjoyed these immensley and bought each one for my collection...and I am still watching them today..(In fact "Planet of Spiders" parts three and four are on tap this weekend).

In short, buy this book. By any book associated with any character who played in this marvelous series.

Thank you Brigadier for your part in allowing an ordinary man,for a few moments anyway,to escape the inescapable life of medocrity.

                              3 out of 5 stars It's definitely a CompSci textbook.......2007-04-03

The variability in textbook reviews are interesting. I would consider this text "math heavy" whereas other reviewers believe you'll need another serious text on the matter to round out your collection.

I bought this to learn the high level details/processes behind encryption and cryptography but after flipping through the detailed treatment of each, the book got really short, really fast. If you're looking for "Hey here's DES in a nutshell" then this book isn't for you. It is in the sense that the three paragraphs preceding the several-page detailed discussion of the DES algorithm are for you, but the rest isn't.

                              5 out of 5 stars A one-step guide.......2006-03-01

I was able to use this book as an introduction, and more than an introduction, on the world of cryptography. I started reading it with no knowledge on cryptographic algorithms, ad I learned the principles behind cryptographic algorithms and how they are linked with pratical implementation on security products.

The area of network security is less developed than the cryptography area, but still valuable.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Primer for this Subject Area.......2006-01-13

I adored this book! It's one of my favourite texts of all time. I used it for a computer security subject and it's a great primer. It covers a middle ground in computer encryption and network security that serves wonderfully as a primer for the novice and a reference for the experienced.

The contents are roughly evenly split between detailed descriptions of currently used encyrption protocols, and descriptions of network security protocols. For a complete reference library on this field, you would also need a book on network communications protocols, a mathematics-heavy text on the design of encryption algorithms and a programming-heavy text on encryption algorithm implementation.

But if you have prior knowledge of network comms, aren't ineterested in encryption design or maths, and can do the coding yourself, then this book has all you need to understand practical encryption and security currently used in industry and to implement the protocols yourself.

Stallings has a great writing style and explains concepts in clear and interesting English. You can't go wrong with this book. As a primer for the primer, I'd recommend The Code Book by Simon Singh (very readable) or any of Stallings' other books specifically dealing with data comms.

Completely satisfied with delivery of book. It came on the date that the seller promised.

I would do business again the future.

Cryptography and Network Security: Principles and Practice by Stallings is a very good book on crypto.

It is not as detailed as Schneier's Applied Cryptography, but is still a great book.
