Good NY Sports History.......2003-10-16
As a lifelong New Yorker I found the book brought back many memories of what was once a place to see and be seen, the Downtown Athletic Club. Unfortunately, times have changed, but it was enjoyable to read about some of my heroes from the past.
Paper quality of the book isn't up to par, but I can't imagine a New York sports fan not enjoying this.
pass.......2002-12-17
Poorly done and dull compared to other books on football
If you like sports, this book is for you!.......2002-01-03
Normally I don't go for the retrospective books, but in this case, I made an exception. Rudy Riska knows everybody in sports, and a lot of entertainers too! If you like reading interesting stories about athletes and celebrities--this book is right up your alley. And even though I don't know the New York scene very well, I still enjoyed it. If you are person who is into sports, or know somebody who is, this book is perfect!

Sometimes I am rewarded for fretting myself so much about present matters by a quite unasked-for pleasant dream. I mean when I am asleep. This dream is as it were a present of an architectural peep-show. I see some beautiful and noble building new made, as it were for the occasion, as clearly as if I were awake; not vaguely or absurdly, as often happens in dreams, but with all the detail clear and reasonable.

Book Description
Do You Hear What I Hear?
"Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, you'll go drown in Listerine," "We wish you a very crisp mess," and "O come, hoggy faithful."The master of the misheard, Gavin Edwards, author of the bestselling 'Scuse Me While I Kiss This Guy and He's Got the Whole World in His Pants, has done it again, this time with a collection of bungled Christmas lyrics from misguided wassailers. Just in time for the holidays, Deck the Halls with Buddy Holly uncovers some of the most hilarious--and twisted--Yuletide blunders, including:
- "Just like the wands I used to know"
("Just like the ones I used to know" -- "White Christmas")
- "He's making a list, chicken and rice"
("He's making a list, checking it twice" -- "Santa Claus Is Comin' to Town")
- "Olive, the other reindeer"
("All of the other reindeer" -- "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer")
- "Round John Virgin"
("Round yon virgin" -- "Silent Night")
Customer Reviews:
Christmas Carol Funtime!.......2000-11-17
Gavin Edward... who authored two books of misheard lyrics before, penned the funniest Christmas carol book ever!
True Line: Noel, Noel, born is the king of Israel. Misheard Line: Noel, Noel, Barney's the king of Israel.
True Line: Children, go where I send thee. Misheard Line: Children, go warm and sandy.
You get the picture. The book is filled with hilariously misheard lyrics, that weird line in "Silent Night" that never sounded quite right, but you never questioned. Hilarious!
Humorous and silly........1998-12-07
I thought the book was humorous and silly. I enjoyed the creativity. Thanks Gavin Edwards for your sense of humor.

Book Description
Music videos have ranged from simple tableaux of a band playing its instruments to multimillion dollar, high-concept extravaganzas. Born of a sudden expansion in new broadcast channels, music videos continue to exert an enormous influence on popular music. They help to create an artist's identity, to affect a song's mood, to determine chart success: the music video has changed our idea of the popular song.
Here at last is a study that treats music video as a distinct multimedia artistic genre, different from film, television, and indeed from the songs they illuminate -- and sell. Carol Vernallis describes how verbal, musical, and visual codes combine in music video to create defining representations of race, class, gender, sexuality, and performance. The book explores the complex interactions of narrative, settings, props, costumes, lyrics, and much more. Three chapters contain close analyses of important videos: Madonna's "Cherish," Prince's "Gett Off," and Peter Gabriel's "Mercy St."

The Making Of The Mainstream Media.......2006-07-16
Though people usually mention CBS, Edward R. Murrow, and Uncle Walter when talking about the golden age of television network news from the 1950s to the 1970s, NBC News dominated during much of that time. Much of the credit belongs to Reuven Frank, twice NBC's president of network news.
In this 1991 memoir, Frank talks frankly about his time at NBC, trying to create programs of substance and on occasion, succeeding. He paired Chet Huntley with David Brinkley, who in turn anchored the dominant nightly news program of the 1960s and early 1970s. After a time away from the boardroom, Frank became president again in time to revamp "Today" and repudiate the duo concept he developed at NBC Nightly News by making Tom Brokaw the sole talking head.
Stilted, cranky, sometimes acidic, Frank's memoir is also fascinating, funny, and perhaps the best means a layman has of understanding the evolution of television news. "Insiders credit adding Huntley to Brinkley with ending the fatuous practices of newsreels as well as stilling the affected resonances of wartime radio, providing news adults could watch without squirming," he writes.
Frank's focus is more on that evolution than himself; he starts with an evocative and detailed account of how NBC covered the 1948 party conventions in Philadelphia, selling co-branding rights to Life magazine, which also made many of the coverage decisions. Radio reporters adapted to the new medium with difficulty; one sat on a barber chair and explained to viewers what was going on while having his hair cut. This, two years before Frank himself was hired, was the imperfect dawning of the new news.
CBS was the first network to figure out what it was doing, with Murrow leading the charge and chairman William S. Paley providing the support NBC parent RCA balked at. Frank's antipathy for CBS is pronounced and often amusing, as when he notes Walter Cronkite's plan to have an "average man" sit beside him at a convention anchor desk so Cronkite could explain to him what was going on, enlightening the audience by proxy. "Whoever vetoed the idea did Cronkite the greatest favor of his career," Frank writes.
Frank doesn't have time for the conventional pieties about Cronkite or other legends; he even sees hollowness in his own achievements. Huntley and Brinkley were best known for an on-air relationship that really wasn't there (their signature "Good night, David. Good night, Chet" was hated by both because, as they complained to Frank, it made them sound like "a couple of sissies.")
Frank spends most of his book discussing the 1950s and 1960s, odd given the fact he had a longer career than that. He hung around long enough to "execproduce" (a verb he inveighs against) the 1984 party conventions before calling it a day, and may have done more in his later years then he realized, as his brainchild "NBC News Overnight," a failure in its 1982-84 run, is widely credited for bringing a polish and sophistication to broadcast news today's cablecasts strive to emulate.
Frank holds back very little, dishing on the likes of Connie Chung, Jessica Savitch, Roger Mudd, Tom Snyder, and others. Even sweet Jane Pauley comes in for scorn, her '80s bob so pronounced Frank says she looked "like a doll peeping out of a haystack." Yet his overall tone is buttoned-down and informative. Even when he is settling scores or rubbing old sores, you never sense he is being abusive, just unguarded.
Frank died earlier this year. By many accounts, he outlived the domination of the mainstream media he helped create by a considerable period. Yet his work lives on, and will as long as people look to television to get an instant understanding of the world as it happens. "Out Of Thin Air" is a great way to get an understanding about how television happened to be there in the first place.

Customer Reviews:
Disapointing.......2003-12-14
In a word disappointing. Microsoft Project can seem like a bewildering collection of data, options, and interrelationships to the new student. Step-by-step provides some context by going through many of the tasks that you would actually execute if you were using the tool to produce and manage a project schedule. However, it does not leave reader prepared to produce and manage a real schedule of his/her own.
There is no discussion of strategies for schedules e.g. should you consider effort-controlled tasks, if you don't what's the best way to update your schedule, if you do what's the best way to update your schedule??? There is little discussion of "task types" and the pivotal role they play, how those choices impact updating the schedule, resource leveling, and incongruous operations that the tool will allow you to perform without protest. Perhaps because the producer of the software wrote the book there is absolutely no mention of the tool's shortcomings and how they can be avoided.
After reading this book the reader will be able to create a schedule, but will probably become bogged down in difficulty if they try to manage a project by maintaining that schedule.
I used the book as part of my study for the Microsoft Office Specialist exam. I found that I needed to do a lot of supplemental study in order to pass the test.
All you need for MOS certification for Project 2002.......2003-09-27
I spent 2 months on this book, and practised using the trial software that came with the book. Believe me - that was all I needed to get certified. I just needed one attempt! No retaking business at all. I am now Microsoft Office Specialist in Microsoft Project 2002! I did not spend on any other training or books. This book deserves 5 stars and nothing less. Thanks to the authors who did a splendid job.
Very good tutorial text for first-time users.......2003-04-03
The Step-by-Step series on MS Project has been a staple for several years now. Don't expect a lot of advanced coverage, but the book is a solid starter book with clearly written instructions and a fairly engaging case-based set of exercises.
Work through the exercises, though. It's a "hands-on" kind of book!
Covers the breadth of features well.......2003-03-12
This book is designed to bring you up to speed on how to use the various features of Microsoft Project 2002, and it achieves that goal well.
It contains a well written Appendix entitled "A Short Course in Project Management", and various "Project Management Focus" paragraphs throughout the book, but it is not really intended to teach you project management. For that, I suggest you read a project management text without a software focus, such as Project Management for Dummies by Stan Portny.
Just as you would not expect a book on Microsoft Word to teach you how to write using good grammar, you should not expect this book on Microsoft Project to also teach you all you need to know about project management.
I use this book to teach various Project 2002 courses, and I find it works well. However, a prerequiste for my classes is a project management theory class that uses only pen and paper. I have found this to be a powerful combination.
A Simple Intro for Project 2002...but you need more..........2003-02-14
I went through the book, cover to cover, word for word...doing all the examples whose files came from the included CD-ROM...never ran into any problems. Everything worked fine.
I guess I felt like a soldier marching through all the features in a logical progression. The book tells you what to type in step by step...introduces you to all the features (there is a lot that you can do with project 2002 besides manage your own project...eg., you can consolidate projects so that you have a project plan that contains other project plans that you can view and edit...you can create a VBA (Visual Basic Appliation) macro to run and update your HTML project plan...you can learn about Earned Value Analysis, which gives you additional insight into how your project is progressing (maybe similar to the internal rate of return used in Financial analysis to give you a report card on how well your investment is doing)...
I found the chapters were simple to step through and complete. The authors have a somewhat cut and dried tone that actually seems to suit the purpose at hand well, which is to drag you through all the features and details of project 2002 in a limited amount of space and time....And they do this in 369 pages (the chapters only, not the appendices) instead of over a 1000 pages as some books. So the book is for the beginner in Project, If you already have knowledge of project or read any other books on it, you'll want to find something more intermediate or advanced and this won't do it for you. I liked the book for keeping an even keel and not going off on any tangents...they had a goal to show you all the features and seem to accomplish that...Their treatment of many of the subjects in the book are elementary and you'll need to find other books eg., on VBA, to pursue it further.
What it purports to do is give you a step by step introductory knowledge of project 2002 with real world examples. So what doesn't it do? What it doesn't do is commit to showing you how to apply project management which is really what you want to do....knowing all the features is nice but show me a coherent "way" to put it into action...I think I need to get another book to do that.
