          Book Description

By the end of the 1980s the total debt of developing countries had passed the trillion-dollar mark. What should be done when the debt is heavily discounted, and countries pass the point at which they decide to default rather than service the debt in full?

In this illuminating work on external debt, Daniel Cohen explodes many myths currently popular among economists, bankers, and journalists about the nature of the debt problem, its origins, and its cure. He skillfully brings complex theoretical issues to bear on the analysis of practical questions of economic policy. What is needed, he proposes, are clear rules that acknowledge the market price of the debt and deflate the fiction that a highly indebted country is solvent. Using clear, simple analytical models to illustrate his points, Cohen offers a realistic measure of national solvency in an international context. He then applies the framework to an analysis of the major debtor countries and discusses budget constraints, debt repudiation, and the economic fragility of heavily indebted nations.

Daniel Cohen is Professor of Economics at the University of Nancy, a Research Fellow at the Centre d'Études Prospectives d'Économie Mathématique Appliquées á la Planification (CEPREMAP), Paris, and at the Center of Economic Policy Research (CEPR), London. He works regularly as a consultant for the World Bank.

Contents: Intertemporal Budget Constraints. Can a Nation Escape Its Budget Constraint? Capacity versus Willingness to Pay. Voluntary and Involuntary Lending. A Solvency Index - Theory. Empirical Evaluation of the Solvency Index. Domestic and External Debt Constraints. The Fragility of Heavily Indebted Nations - Large Debt and Slow Growth.

              5 out of 5 stars Niftyness.......2003-02-14

Sluggy Freelance is one of the greatest comics I've ever read, while most web comics get old and end up with the same jokes over and over again. Pete does a new strip every day, and fills the strips with info. Even though I've read through it all twice on hiw website I still bought and read the book. it's that good

              5 out of 5 stars Bun-Bun should be proud........2000-10-22

Yet another great read by Pete Abrams, the writer of the arguably best internet comic out there. This book picks up right where the third book, "When Holidays Attack!" left off, and starts up strongly. While I myself haven't EXACTLY read the book cover-to-cover, I HAVE read every single strip online since 1997, Sluggy's debut. I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes absurd, hilarious jokes involving psychotic mini-lop rabbits, an alien secretary, and a ferret that's easily distracted. And all this for a measly 13 bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Pete Does It Again!.......2000-10-17

Sluggy Freelance is without a doubt the best comic strip on the web. This book is the 4th in the series and covers the the strips from the later-half of 1999 through January 1, 2000.

For those not familure with Sluggy Freelance, this is a sci-fi/adventure/humor comic strip. Pete spoofs many popular movies (ie: The Matrix, Aliens), television shows (ie: Star Trek, X-Files, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, etc.), and on occassion real-life events. Pete has managed to create a unique comic strip with deep and involving story-lines, well-developed characters, and a new twist on talking animals (a cute bunny-rabbit with a switchblade, a glock, and an attitude that would make Dirty Harry proud).

I highly recommend this and the other Sluggy books to those who love comic strips, good humor, comic books, and Harry Potter books (hey, I've seen all of you adults reading the Harry Potter books! ).

3 out of 5 stars Mandolin Beginners Beware!.......2006-08-18

While this is a decent book for a beginner, there is one major flaw, that being the fact that you have to be able to read music! Unfortunately I dont. Most beginners books are based on tablature, a method that is very easy to master and it allows you to play without knowing how to read music. I did learn a few things from this book and if you're interested in learning how to read music while you learn the basics of the mandolin, then you'll probably enjoy this publication.

I never played anything. With this book, it took only some days to start to play. It's excellent for the beginner.

Targeted at improvers/Intermediates with photos of fingering and example of the chords with popular tunes.
But a bit too skimpy /brief (only 48 A8 pages) and should be expanded.
For example on the chord accompaniment for different styles. Why knowing chords are useful (most notes will be selected from the chord set), chord sets and progression etc. A mini CD would also be of benefit

With The Bombast Transcripts, Christopher Locke (a.k.a. RageBoy, that iconoclastic cybervoice of dissonance, disdain, and all things provocative) is leaping from your screen to your bookshelf. Look out. The scathing rants from the creator of Entropy Gradient Reversals--probably the most wittily outrageous, cryptically observant, and eagerly puzzled-over Web zine ever to pollute the airwaves--are explosive.

As a tag, screed is only partly accurate for the contents of this volatile collection; they're long harangues, all right, but by no means monotonous. Listen in as Locke lets his alter ego loose in friendly chat with IBM's Lou Gerstner (well, actually an exit interview with Lew Firstner, pompous and clueless chairman of the 666 Corporation). As he not-so-clearly illustrates what "getting it" means (by pondering T.S. Kuhn, voodoo ceremonies, and a sacred space you can't enter with your mind on, let alone your shoes). And as he gleefully admits that most of his readers "seem to enjoy abstruse and obfuscatory exegeses on themes that utterly elude them" but apparently "alleviates their anxiety about not knowing anything that wasn't covered by Geraldo." Don't be insulted; be alleviated. Locke may indeed be the Web's most acerbic gonzo journalist and techno-semiotic social critic, but he's also written for Forbes; worked for MCI, Ricoh, and the Japanese government's AI project; and been named one of the top 50 business thinkers in the world. If you missed out on this cyberpundit's irreverent rants the first time around, catch him now (if you can). As Locke himself reminds us, "Being totally insane is hard work. People don't realize that." They should now. --S. Ketchum

                    Book Description

From the hilarious to the sublime, the essays and observations of cultural commentator extraordinaire, Chris "RageBoy" Locke.

In more ways than one, Chris Locke has raised a godawful racket on the Net. Under his alter-egotistical nom de plume, RageBoy, and through his webzine, Entropy Gradient Reversals, he has entertained and enlightened thousands of readers from some of the world's largest companies, governments, and institutions-including those from which he's managed to escape.

Now for the first time in browser-free format, The Bombast Transcripts brings together the best of his worst. And his worst is very good indeed. Marvel as one of America's foremost social critics interviews pop-media superstars such as IBM's Lou Gerstner, Sayanarology's Moe Ron Hubbard, Godzilla, Mr. Ed, and, in a twisted hall-of-mirrors tour de force, RageBoy himself. Tremble in awe as mysteries of the universe unfold, from thermodynamics and cutting-edge neurophysiology to sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll. Thrill to obfuscation so arcane you'll need to be sedated. Laugh so hard you'll think you have been.

While Locke's semantic antics will have you in stitches, his real aim is for the jugular-via a triple bypass transplanting business, media, and social mores into a carnivalesque landscape of the imagination where conventional logic bellies up and flatlines. Part scathing send-up of commercial techno-fetishism, part hysterical stand-up on the theme of spiritual bankruptcy, part intimate memoir of a vibrant and uncompromising life, The Bombast Transcripts will rock you, shock you, and leave you pondering what The Economist once called "the wisdom of RageBoy."

                    From The Bombast Transcripts:

"Wandering barefoot on the Lower East Side of New York, over a thousand dollars cash in my pocket, looking to score, bring back for the holy freaks the one good thing. Odysseus adrift. Also in my pocket, the Tarot, the Waite deck I'd just bought that day. I went into The Eatery on Second Avenue and my waitress saw the cards. 'I was raised by Gypsies,' she said. 'I will tell you about the trumps if you like.' I had just dropped another tab and had little time left I knew, but she sat with me and pointed to each of the major arcana, the Lovers, the Fool, the Tower, Death. Then stopped. 'You have two Magicians,' she said...."

This is the crash course in understanding the fundamentals of the necessity of change as seen through the eyes of the author, Christopher Locke. Everything you previously thought was lore is turned on its head in riotous fashion in The Bombast Transcripts. Each chapter takes apart some standard you thought was a given, an immutable and constant attribute of practically every aspect of life in the western world.

The best part is that Chris does it in so many different ways in one book. There's flat out ranting and there's cutting ridicule including interviews with himself, Rupert Murdoch and the famous one with Mr Ed. (Yes, the horse.)

Using those cliched critic's terms of rollercoaster ride or rollicking good yarn don't do this volume any justice whatsoever. In fact, this book defies any label you might care to ascribe.

In fact, I defy anyone to come up with a label for this book.

I just finished Bombastic Transcripts, so if you have bothered to read this at all you're probably wondering so what did this monkeyboy think? Good question, honestly I am still pondering it mulling it over in my head and probably will for a bit. It is a quick read, it's an interesting read, but fundamentally it's not a light read. It takes a little time for digestion and pondering... I suspect I will read it again in the next month or two and reconsider, hell maybe throw this whole review out.

So here's my advice go buy the book, RageBoy needs the cash. If you like Tom Robbins, Hunter S Thompson, and the Gonzo style read away, you'll enjoy it. Perhaps you will find some stuff to digest, even without ingesting any substances on the Schedule I drug list.

If you didn't like Cluetrain Manifesto, Gonzo Marketing, or any Gonzo writing buy the book anyways, for the reasons stated above. Then hide the book in your bookshelf and wait until a really dark night, one in which your soul is screaming for mercy while the night rages in a Category 5 Hurricane and your only fresh reading material is a copy of Reader's Digest you have flipped through already 15 times. Your mind goes hungry, for something unanswered and unknown, and you will recall this book hiding in some dark corner of the bookshelf covered in dust and a three month old edition of Fast Company magazine. You will pull it off the shelf and find yourself drawn to the words expressed inside and the walls of illusion come crashing down inside your mind. Either that or you'll take a gun and pull a Hemmingway. Doesn't much matter to me, if you survive reading it you might even find yourself signing up for Entropy Gradient Reversals, but let me warn you the shotgun is alot quicker and painless, but it's not nearly as much fun.

5 out of 5 stars "You have GOT to READ this guy!!".......2002-01-28

That was my introduction just over a year ago to Entropy Gradient Reversals and the evil genius mind(s) behind it, Christopher Locke/RageBoy. From that first mind-blowing, breathless reading of his newsletter, I was alternately charmed, alarmed and disarmed by the decidedly unpretentious Chris Locke. His new book, the Bombast Transcripts, a collection of essays previously published to the Entropy Gradient Reversals mailing list, contains that first newsletter that caught my imagination, and so many more.

As I've read through this book, I have found myself again reacting to it in the visceral way that I had to become accustomed to as one of his faithful Valued Readers at EGR. While some may call him pompous and crass, I find him to be merely open and honest. Then again, I've always had a soft spot for intelligent, over-indulgent, semi-vulgar Don Quixotes. His chosen windmills are big business that don't have a clue (IBM et all, no small potatoes here) and, while a book about business practices would normally make my eyes glaze over while putting me in a semi-catatonic state, I find this book to be human and engaging at every turn. Each essay stands on it's own as either a rant or a screed, yet each could also be expanded into its own little book. Irreverent, engaging, transforming, contemplative, hilarious....and each page is more of the same.

While I read Locke's words, I get the feeling that I am a part of something much bigger and more important than anyone can guess, especially those that think the internet is nothing more than a collection of chatrooms and porn sites. No, I get the feeling I'm getting a glimpse of a creation, a rapturous inferno of truth and emotion, two key elements that, when exposed to each other under the heat of RageBoy's passion, cause a brilliant flash of evolution that could change the world as we know it. What a wonderful world that would be.

Idealistic? Maybe. Bombastic? Hardly. Evil Genius?? Indeed.

4 out of 5 stars Great, gossipy book.......2007-01-08

Fran Drescher is obviously an extremely talented woman. Sharp and witty, she was not only the star and co-creator of the '90s show The Nanny, but also served as one of its producers, writers and directors. Her book Enter Whining is a funny, gossipy tale of her ascent to the stratosphere of Hollywood stardom, but we're not talking Kitty Kelley here. Readers who already love Drescher will adore this book, as it's full of sweet, happy stories and profiles about the author's adventures as a struggling actress and her eventual success.

Drescher comes across as being very down-to-earth, still the starstruck chick from Queens who probably still has to pinch herself now and then, unable to quite believe how far she's come. She writes pretty much the way she speaks, with her occasional Yiddishisms and the trademark, "Meanwhile..." She offers an especially moving chapter about the rape she suffered early in her career, and while she refrains from providing the details, it's a harrowing read all the same. It's the only time in the book where she moves away from the lighthearted tone she adopts elsewhere, but she manages to seamlessly integrate it into her story without indulging in self-pity.

There's a lot of backstory about the making and filming of The Nanny, but readers seeking lots of behind-the-scenes anecdotes will be disappointed. This is Drescher's story -- and a good one at that -- so we'll have to wait for another book on The Nanny show itself, hopefully to be written by Drescher and Jacobson.

By the way, everyone knows that Drescher and Jacobson separated and then divorced in the late '90s, a few years after this book was published, so it does leave a somewhat bittersweet taste in one's mouth in the end. Drescher writes affectionately and lovingly about her husband, their long courtship and marriage; it's obvious they were devoted to each other and considered each other soulmates.

A great, quick read and a must for any Drescher fan.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and Interesting Memoir.......2006-12-17

This 1995 book tells the story of how Fran Drescher made it to the top of the TV sitcom business. Her humor and kindness come through very well in a writing style that evokes her very unique voice. Perhaps not as frank as her 2003 book about fighting uterine cancer, it still provides a lot of insight into what makes this woman tick. You feel that you would really enjoy knowing her.

4 out of 5 stars The Queen of Queens tells her story.......2006-04-17

This book is all about Fran Drescher's extremely interesting and unique life up to 1996.In it, she writes in a humorous vein about almost everything that happened in her life, from the highs like meeting and later marrying her husband, creating and starring in the hit tv show "The Nanny" and later meeting "God's gift to all little Jewish girls in need of a leader", Babs herself, to the lows like discovering a growth in her body. But with the help of family and friends, she didn't let the negative things get her down.We should all be strong enough to follow her example. She also provides some interesting tidbits like how "The Nanny" was produced and about talk shows and their hosts.Sure, she goes on quite a bit on her worries about her weight and her looks, but she's just human like the rest of us and a lot of people have the same worries. The book has some nice black & white photos of her, her family and her friends in almost all the chapters.I enjoyed reading the book very much even though it's short.I can't recommend this book highly enough to not just the fans of her work, but to all fans of comedy.

4 out of 5 stars The entertaining life of Fran Drescher.......2004-06-02

The book Enter Whining, by Fran Drescher, is a biography. To me this book was very entertaining, it told all about her life and how she got from being a little child to where she is at today. The book also has many pictures in it so you can see and picture what she is talking about while you are reading. The way it is written is like she was writing to herself in her own diary, but towards the end she addresses it to her mother.
How the book starts out is when she was little and how she first got started being on television. Fran started when she was around ten, she was in commercials at first then she moved up to be in the background of some movies. When she got to be in the background for the movies she always thought that she was actually in the movie so she got really excited, but it ended up that she was just in the background. She was still happy to be in the background though, intill one day when she was the actual star of the movie and that changed her whole life because then she got to star in any movie that she got a chance to. Ever since that first time starring in a movie then she moved on to being in a television show called ''The Nanny''.
Throughout the biography she writes about this guy that she has been seeing for a while now and she doesn't really mention his name at all intill she starts getting into detail about him. His name is Dave which come to find out, is her husband. Fran has been with Dave for most of her life now, she states that it is hard for her to have a husband and be moving all of the time. To me Fran has a very fun filled life and is happy with what she does for a living.

                    5 out of 5 stars I Love Lucy, I Love Fran!.......2004-04-01

Believe it or not, I never watched The Nanny on prime time television (where was I?). YO. Last year I was home recovering from major surgery and started watching Lifetime (what else is there to do?). I turned on this program one morning, and I thought it was hysterical. It reminded me of I Love Lucy, my all time favorite sitcom. (Well, where have I been, apparently, everyone thinks the same thing). I was hooked and watched it almost everyday. Now it comes on in the evening. I actually got my husband to watch it (he never watched it either - no wonder we are together). He loves it. He started asking me questions about Fran. So I searched the Internet and found that she had written 3 books. I loved this book. I feel like I know her - we are even the same age (I wish I looked as good as she does). She would fit right in with my friends. We both own a Russian Blue Cat (my cat looks just like the one in the book, the collar and the tag). I really enjoyed the pictures (it is like a scrap book). I would love to meet this person. You must read this book. Can you tell I connected with this person? (I am not the "star struck" type). This is a very funny lady and I look forward to reading Cancer Schmancer. Very enjoyable read. I was able to get a "used" book because this is out of print. I hope to see her in more films.

There are lots of excellent books for new users getting into AE. Take a look ay books by Taylor and Harlan for example. This book is targeted for Intermediate to Advanced users looking to take their skills and speed up a notch. The negative review is unwarranted.

Click on the Search Inside the Book button and you will see the Table of Contents, the back cover, and a chapter excerpt. The title says it all "Time-Saving Tips and Shortcuts from the Pros." If you look at the sample pages and index, you discover that this book is DEFINITELY for the intermediate to Advanced user. Don't knock the book becuase you clicked buy before looking at it.

Its not the publishers fault that the book is above your level. Put it on the shelf, pick up the AE classroom in a book, Angie Taylor's, Rod Harlan's, or the Meyer's volume 1 as a place to start. No matter what your level, this book will make you faster and showcases several techniques that all levels of users can enjoy. But tips and shortcuts do not take a beginner into the land of being a full fledged user.

AE is a great program... stick to it and you'll be rewarded!

I just got After Effects 6.5 and thought this book looked like what I needed to reduce the high learning curve of this software. Wrong! The description doesn't mention what is printed on the back cover "FOR INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED USERS". So the book sits there unused, and so does the software as the Adobe Manual is useless for newbies too.
