Customer Reviews:
VERY COOL and FUN.......2005-01-09
I got this with my Christmas money and I think it is very cool. Ruby Gloom is fun, weird, and just scary enough that my little sister doesn't like it. But my mom and I really think she's funny. The tattoos it comes with are very pretty.

The spirit of the 19th century.......2007-01-05
This book is just a delightful pedagogy, and a voyage in what was probably the nicest in the spirit of music in the middle of the 19th century.
However, let the author talk, and imagine you're told this not only by your singing teacher, but by any performing art teacher: "Keep on studying...my dear students (...) My wish for you is that you will feel the urge to excel, that you will be on guard against rivalry, and that very soon you will give me the great joy of applauding you".

Slowing down life's pace is necessary: here's how and why!.......1999-03-29
I have been preparing lectures on stress management and came upon the work of the authors' Use of Time Project which has tracked Americans expenditures of time over decades. This book has caused me to re-think all of my assumptions, and fits in beautifully with some of the brand new books coming out in the wellness field, including Dean Ornish's Love and Survival: The Scientific Basis for the Healing Power of Intimacy and Paul Pearsall's The Pleasure Prescription: To Love, To Work and To Play. Time for Life shows, in methodical yet eloquent thoroughness, that the sense of hurry sickness and time famine is illusory and unnecessary: we in fact have ENOUGH time and money to be happy, yet we think we do not. The final chapter is worth the price of the book: called Brother, can you spare some time? it points out that the pace of life is a political issue, and that the commercialization of leisure can be critiqued and questioned, that while most of us lead lives of unbelievable privilege, happiness eludes us. This does not have to be the case. This is a scholarly book, yet accessible to the lay reader, particularly if you skip around some. The cross cultural stuff is fascinating (eg., Japanese people work longer hours yet don't feel the time famine like Americans do.) It is well worth the careful reading this important topic warrants. I am indebted to Mr. Robinson and Godbey for this expression of their life's work. I am deeply grateful, in fact.
Book Description
Re-reading Popular Culture is a key guide to understanding the meanings and value of popular culture today. It explores the theme of cultural citizenship by combining textual analysis and media reception theory to analyze popular culture. It includes such contemporary issues as the rewriting of masculinity after the success of feminism, and the layers of meaning in semi-public and private talk of multiculturalism and ethnicity.Joke Hermes tackles a variety of media forms and texts, including sports, detective fiction and police series, and children 's television and games. This is a fascinating and illuminating study of popular culture and its audience.
Book Description
All That Hollywood Allows explores the representation of gender in popular Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s, the last decade in which film enjoyed a pivotal cultural position. Both a work of feminist film criticism and theory and an analysis of popular culture, this provocative book examines from a cultural studies perspective the top-grossing film melodramas of that decade, including A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, East of Eden, Imitation of Life, and Picnic.
Stereotypically viewed as a complacent and idyllic time, the 1950s were actually a period of dislocation and great social change as Americans struggled to regain their equilibrium in the wake of World War II. Jackie Byars argues that mass-media texts of the period, especially films, provide evidence of society's consuming preoccupation with the domestic spherethe nuclear family and its values. The melodramas included in her study appeared in theaters just as women were leaving their homes for the workplace. Some films challenged and some reinforced previously sacrosanct gender roles. Byars shows how Hollywood melodramas participated in, interpreted, and extended societal debates concerning family structure, sexual divisions of labor, and gender roles.
Byars's readings of these films assess a variety of critical methodologies and approaches to textual analysis, some central to feminist film studies and some that previously have been bypassed by scholars in the field. She specifically questions the validity of readings grounded solely on the premises of psychoanalysis, arguing that the male norm inherent in the psychoanalytic viewpoint may well prevent us from hearing, let alone understanding, the female voices that make their way into the most patriarchal of films. Byars thus critiques earlier approaches to the study of women's films and offers fresh readings, emphasizing from several important perspectives the suppressed female voice.
Book Description
After a decadelong hiatus, African Americans once again began appearing regularly on television in the 1960s. Bill Cosby costarred on I Spy, Sammy Davis Jr. briefly hosted a variety show, and in 1968 Diahann Carroll debuted in the title role of Julia, the first television series to star an African American since the cancellation of Amos ’n’ Andy. Over the next ten years, shows with African American casts became more common; some, like Sanford and Son and Good Times, were hits with both black and white audiences. Yet many within the black community criticize these programs as perpetuating demeaning stereotypes and hampering the political progress made by African Americans.
In Revolution Televised, Christine Acham offers a more complex reading of this period in African American television history, finding within these programs opposition to dominant white constructions of African American identity. She explores the intersection of popular television and race as witnessed from the documentary coverage of the civil rights and Black Power movements, the personal politics of Flip Wilson and Soul Train’s Don Cornelius, and the ways in which notorious X-rated comic Redd Foxx reinvented himself for prime time.
Reflecting on both the potential of television to effect social change as well as its limitations, Acham concludes with analyses of Richard Pryor’s politically charged and short-lived sketch comedy show and the success of outspoken comic Chris Rock. Revolution Televised deftly illustrates how black television artists operated within the constraints of the television industry to resist and ultimately shape the mass media’s portrayal of African American life.
Christine Acham is assistant professor in African American and African studies at the University of California, Davis.

Customer Reviews:
wonderful max reference book.......2006-04-08
This book is simply amazing. 800 pages of pure greatness. If you have gotten your feet wet a little bit in max, and you are looking to step your skills up to the next level, this is a must have book.
I think it would be worth the $35 for just the thorough particle effects chapters alone. But you get so much more, character studio info, compositing, environment modelling, and even scripting (which i still haven't touched in max, but the info is there when i need it nonetheless)
A deeper look into 3ds Max 7.......2005-09-25
Before I started reading the Inside 3ds Max 7 book, I had read the authors biography. Most of them got a long history with 3ds Max, which makes this book a must-read experience.
The authors described each tool in the program and showed its strength without focusing on a specific production process, which makes this book suitable for all 3ds Max users in many fields.
The Inside 3ds Max 7 is for intermediate and advanced users. So, if you are new with 3ds Max, try to get a basic background before start reading this book to be able to acquire all the experience included in the book. The 3ds Max 7 book gives you a great experience with the program features that make you able to do professional tricks and effects.
The first part of the book shows what is new in 3ds Max 7 concerning each feature. And the following parts go deeper in program features to fully cover the program tools.
The 3ds Max book is a great book and will surely give you a solid experience with the program and its features.
Fantastic Book.......2005-09-02
The author obviously knows his subject matter and is able to communicate it to his audience very effectively. While I am neither an expert with 3ds max, nor a professional, I find the examples in this book to be concise, clearly written and easy to follow. As other reviewers point out this book is a great resource for intermediate to professional users.
Just Right for Intermediate Users.......2005-08-22
This book is perfect for the person that is comfortable with 3ds max basics and is ready to move on to the juicy treats the program has to offer. What I like most is how the example projects are based on real word examples. You wont have to suffer through boring generic concepts that don't show how the tools can be really used.
Advanced topics such as scripting, particles, rendering and compositing are presented in a way that let you put the ideas to work in your own projects quickly. For example, the scripting section shows you how to make the most of a few scripting terms so you are not overwhelmed and can start using maxscript right away.
The example walkthroughs are just right... very clear and concise but don't insult your intelligence by telling you what to click to create a box primitive.
I agree with a previous reviewer about the advanced rigging tutorial on the DVD rom. It is the best written tutorial on the subject I have seen.
Even though 3ds max 8 has been announced, this reference is still very current and definitely a "must buy".
Poor book!.......2005-08-07
I have 7 years of experience on max. This book is really poor. If you read max help (or search for tutorials) will find best resources. I really was disappointed with this book. Poor (and some cases WRONG )modeling tecniques, basic particles, all is poor. NOT EVEN A SINGLE CHAPTER IS GOOD!! If you need help try google or max official site [...]
