4 out of 5 stars Reviewed by the International Corporate Branding Center.......2001-05-27

Short Review: Star rating 4 - A good introduction to corporate communication, which covers the major developments in the field up to 1995 including chapters on corporate identity and corporate image. If this was an up to date version then it would of possibly been awarded more than 4 stars, which is due mainly to its age. An updated version would be very welcome from this author whom is a leading figure in the academic fields this book covers.

Full review: This book, first published in Dutch in 1992, aims to integrate the existing knowledge of corporate communication, to define the discipline and sum up what has been said about it (up until 1995). It also presents useful ways of implementing the ideas.

What then is corporate communication?

The author, a professor in corporate communication at the Business School of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, defines it as the framework in which the various communication specialists in an organisation integrate the organizational message. This integration can help to define the corporate image and improve corporate performance.

The book consists of six chapters. The first one is an introduction to the field. It looks at the nature of corporate communication, for example what different types of communication there are and issues surrounding the different types.

Chapter two deals with corporate identity. It starts off with a theoretical discussion of the concept, which covers issues such as how a strong corporate identity can be useful and what different types there are. The second half of the chapter covers practical ways of measuring corporate identity.

Chapter three is similar in its form to chapter two, but focuses on corporate image instead of identity. After a theoretical start, the chapter looks at measurement methods used in practice.

In the fourth chapter several reference models are discussed, as well as practical models. Van Riel also presents his own corporate communication strategy model.

Chapter five looks at ways of organising the corporate communication process in order to integrate all the corporate messages that come from different sources.

The last chapter looks at case studies from four large international companies, in order to highlight the importance of theory in corporate communication.

Summary

The book has plenty of analytical discussions, models, diagrams and references to academic works but also practical examples and applications, and will appeal to both academics and practitioners, but is really more academic in content. The chapters are concise and not too long, and each one begins with an abstract. The book has a good mix of theoretical discussion, real life examples and ways of practical implementation. This book would suit anyone interested in corporate image, corporate identity and of course, corporate communication, especially those looking for an overview of these fields up until 1995.

Time and time again when we analyze how poor, delayed, or unnecessarily manipulative communication has damaged or destroyed the reputation, credibility, brand name, or the future of an individual, organization, or product, it often seems that then, and only then, does the search begin for the rules and tests to apply to achieve effective, problem-anticipating, ethically sound communication. This monograph outlines communication goals, fundamental communication principles, standard-setting protocols, and sound approaches that meet or exceed constituent or community communication expectations.

Authors Derek Armstrong and Kam Wai Yu have penned a brilliant `must-have' book that will change the way business owners, entrepreneurs and professionals do business. Expertly researched with numerous examples and stories, this incisive book is an easy read.

The Persona Principle: How to Succeed in Business with Image-Marketing shows you how to create and build a customized visible image, one that will be remembered. It succinctly puts into words the theories that I have been practicing the past few years--and then some! "The biggest obstacle to your success is invisibility," the authors say. Armstrong and Yu teach practical solutions that, if followed, ensures your visibility. What I liked most is that, unlike other marketing books, this one actually shows you how to do it in a smart, savvy and inexpensive way.

This book is not just for business owners, but also for anyone who wants to create a better, bigger, stronger, more successful image. The imaging techniques taught are a smorgasbord of valuable tips that will provoke you to identify what is hindering your success in your business and make changes accordingly. I was also impressed with the simple language used, instead of the technical and confusing jargon that is commonplace in most books of this type. You will understand this book!

As an avid fan of such visionary masters or marketing gurus like Stephen R. Covey, Dale Carnegie, Zig Ziglar, T. Harv Eker, Napoleon Hill and Og Mandino, I highly recommend that every business owner, professional or author like myself read this book. Derek Armstrong and Kam Wai Yu's book The Persona Principle: How to Succeed in Business with Image-Marketing belongs on a shelf next to any of these authors' works. If this book doesn't change your business for the better, I don't know what will. It's honestly one of the BEST marketing books I've ever read!

We live in a world of incredible media noise.
In the competition for attention, voices get
louder and messages turn into slogans. For
the person with a product, idea, cause or
candidate to promote, the temptation is to
merely imitate the loudest and most mindless
of the current slogans and use the most
    obvious channels.
The virtue of The Persona Principle is that
it quietly and rationally cuts through all the
noise and lays out a set of principles to guide
you through the development and implementation
    of a sound marketing strategy.
The beginning of the program is the development
of visibility and credibility. We all know how easy
it is to be victimized by 'word of mouth'. We end
up repeating what we take to be the conventional
wisdom and, when there seems to be some weight
behind it, to accept it uncritically. Here at last, is
a road map to creating that kind of credibility
for ourselves, our projects and our products.

I'm picky when it comes to non-fiction books. They have to deliver--be clear, concise, cut to the bone of the matter, and leave me with a plan. Persona Principle gets this. The book's emphasis on invisiblity and incredibility alone is worth the price of the book. It's marketing savvy at its best.
~Carol D. O'Dell, author of Mothering Mother, Kunati Publishing, January 2007.

To succeed in business or a career, you not only have to do your job well, but you must market yourself successfully.

I'm in the middle of an MBA, and I read this book at the same time that I was taking Marketing. The Persona Principle applies the principles of branding and image-making to people, and it's so much easier to read and more fun than a marketing textbook. Armstrong distills the important principles of image and brand marketing down to their essences, then explains succinctly and clearly how to apply these principles to your business or your career to best achieve success.

There are two great obstacles that you have to overcome before you can succeed, either in business or in a career: invisibility and incredibility. Basically, people have to know that you exist and know you can do the job well before they can hire / buy from / promote you. The Persona Principle perfectly explains how to overcome these two obstacles, and not with silly aphorisms but with concrete help.

This is the best book I've ever read on marketing yourself for success.

    Book Description

Are sick companies destined to fail? Must thousands of workers continue to lose their jobs in downsizing and restructuring exercises? Principles of Corporate Renewal systematically examines these issues and describes a rational approach for dealing with financially distressed companies. It contains the first logical and orderly discussion of a number of modern business issues including outsourcing, turnaround management, layoffs, quality management, and reengineering. These subjects are carefully intertwined with information on important practices such as break-even analysis, failure prediction, and negotiations.
This is the first textbook in the field of corporate renewal especially prepared for students in graduate and undergraduate business programs as well as professional training seminars. Exercises provide students with the opportunity to try their hands at saving troubled companies and refreshing successful ones. Extensive real-world examples and an engaging writing style broaden its readership to include interested lay people, small business owners, bankers, and corporate managers. Other valuable features include a glossary of relevant terms and a comprehensive bibliography. Topics covered include:
the three levels of corporate renewal; cash flows and net incomes; an overview of bankruptcy laws; failure prediction; ethical and legal considerations in financial distress; turnaround analysis; employee downsizing; crafting a plan of re-organization; business process reengineering; Deming and the quality revolution; tax considerations; activity-based costing.
"This is the first publication in the field of insolvency that includes all facets of turnaround and corporate revitalization--from historical statistics and perspectives to failure prediction models. It is much than simply a 'how to' path but does devote sufficient time to turnaround analysis and recovery process. A must-read for everyone in the insolvency field from turnaround professionals to bankruptcy judges." -- Gerald P. Buccino, Ph.D., Buccino & Associates, Inc.

4 out of 5 stars Good Balance of Theory, Finance and practice.......2000-01-09

Dr. Platt in this book offers a balanced mix of academic and practical examples. This book is an excellant first read on many subjects in the turnaround field.

The book offers a good base of data to understand the statistics of companies trouble. It also offers for the academically oriented a wealth of references to explore individual subjects in more depth.

Some topics are so vast (Accounting, Bankruptcy Law, Financial Analysis) that several individual books are written on each subject. However this books hits the major hiighlights of the most important topics.

Dr Platt is also close to the industry and is a leader in the Association of Certified Turnaround Professionals and has personal relationships with many leaders in the industry. He has drawn on the experince to write a book that is also a very useful reference for the turnaround manager to use as a guide and refresher on engagements.

4 out of 5 stars Indispensable Addition to Turnaround Management Literature.......1999-06-14

Up to now the literature of turnaround management has consisted mainly of case studies and the personal experiences of practitioners. Some of the material is widely accepted as good. "Taking Charge" by John Whitney comes to mind. Some is a matter of personal taste. "Mean Business" by Al Dunlap is a recent example.

Harlan Platt has written what may be the first academic textbook for this little understood management genre. It is a considered analysis of the development of Corporate Renewal, which encompasses a set of management disciplines ranging from strategic change management, through problem solving techniques needed to turnaround a distressed company, to the triage of crisis management.

In Platt's book you won't find 'slash and burn" turnaround stories like those popularized in the mainstream media. Most turnaround managers will acknowledge that often layoffs and staff reductions are required in a turnaround, but only after very careful analysis of the distressed operation's remaining value proposition. And as Platt notes, insufficient attention is given to the number of jobs saved when a layoff is necessary.

The book opens with an interesting history of turnaround management research with helpful statistics on the main causes of corporate distress. Following is a comprehensive section on bankruptcy and failure prediction, which clearly plays to Platt's strength as a finance professor. I found the chapters on turnaround analysis and employee downsizing very helpful.

Platt also incorporates overviews of re-engineering, activity based accounting, quality and a very useful chapter on tax considerations in turnarounds.

The Principles of Corporate Renewal seems positioned as a text for the Certified Turnaround Professional exams administered by the Turnaround Management Association. And indeed, Platt has been instrumental in the curriculum development of the program. But the book is just as useful for those who are simply interested in learning more about the dynamic of turnaround management.

My only complaint is that I wish there was a bibliography, or better yet a bibliographic essay, on the current literature surrounding turnaround management. Yes, there is a reference section and the chapters are footnoted. However, it seems to me that at least two published turnaround accounts written by practitioners are missing. But perhaps I missed these in the footnotes.

I do international turnarounds for the telecommunications industry. The highest accolade I can give to Platt's book is that it's on my desk, ready to slip into my bag as an indispensable tool for my next turnaround assignment in China, Russia or wherever the opportunity presents itself

            Book Description

Far from settling into a recognisable pattern, the new employment relationship spawned by globalisation and communications technology continues to evolve. If the labour law and industrial relations community are to retain expertise and social utility in their vital role, constant monitoring of the field and discussion is essential. It was to further this purpose that the Club of Labour Law Journals held a conference in Brussels in April 2001, under the auspices of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and the Society for Social and International Cooperation. This book is the record of that significant conference. The presentations and discussion proceed along four main avenues: the "battle for the brains", the impact of atypical work arrangements, the concept of employability, and the online rights of workers. Important questions addressed include: * Do globalisation and high technology necessarily go hand in hand? * Which skills increase employability? * What are the social factors of employability? * Are contingent and partly dependent workers protected in a fair way? * To what degree can the employment contract be stabilized? * How can we tackle the erosion of social security provisions? * To what extent should intra-company electronic resources be regulated? * What is the relation between employers and illegal immigrants? Participants include representatives from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Latin America, and the United States. For an understanding of the current realities of industrial relations from a global perspective, The Evolving Employment Relationship and the New Economy is essential reading. It will greatly assist lawyers, employers, policymakers, and academics to proceed conscientiously and creatively toward the definition of much-needed values and guidelines in this crucial area of economic activity.

James Huneker's biographical classic reflects his extensive research on the life and works of Chopin (while studying to be a concert pianist). Huneker's acute perception of the composer's life provides a complete understanding of the historic circumstances surrounding Chopin's musical development as the ultimate lyric genius of the highest realm. His dignity of spirit alternated with petulance and serious depression. Though both proud and timid he led an isolated life, but it was in his art that he was bold and impassioned. In Part Two of this remarkable work Huneker presents a brilliant piece-by-piece review of the entire collection of Chopin's music, identifying him as the most poetic of composers. 2 out of 5 stars Almost a Waste of Time.......2007-02-07

The biography is very disappointing, the musical descriptions are poetic but don't get into much detail. If you want a general feel for Chopin's music but don't want intricate musical detail, the descriptions of the pieces may suit your need. That's the only reason I didn't give this book the lowest possible rating.

For biographical info, "Chopin in Paris" by Tad Szulc is much more informative and accurate. Huneker's biography, besides being relatively short, takes off on gossipy tangents that often jump around in time making it hard to get a good feeling for Chopin's progression thru life.

My problem with the musical descriptions (the book is divided into 76 pages of biography and 141 pages of music "analysis", divided into sections on preludes, mazurkas, etc.) is again the gossipy nature. For example, the chapter on the preludes is 13 pages long. The first four pages are strictly about who claimed when and where they were written.

I recently played Prelude No. 4 in E Minor at Peabody in Baltimore. Prior to the recital, I was deluged with coaching at college master-class play-ins, etc. The discussions centered on things like why the downbeat beginning each measure is played weaker than usual, contributing to the feeling of hopelessness in the piece.

Huneker's descriptions are: "The melody seems literally to wail..", "This tiny prelude contains wonderful music", "The whole is like some canvas by Rembrant.."

In the relatively few times Huneker does go into musical detail there may be some insight, but just as frequently a few bars of music are shown accompanied by an explanation like, "Volcanic mutterings these!" -when the music shown is a pianissimo (played very softly) passage!

For anyone looking for insights on actually playing the pieces, Walker's "The Chopin Companion.." which can be found "used" at Amazon, is a much better choice.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but only mildly informative.......2002-09-10

This book (originally published in 1900) is split in two sections. In the first 100 pages, the life of Chopin is discussed by Huneker in a very colorful and poetic style, although unfortunately very few biographical facts are revealed. When I finished this section I felt I had hardly learned anything new about Chopin.

The next 150 pages deal with Chopin's music, in which Huneker comments briefly on every one of Chopin's compositions (with the exception of several pieces unknown to Huneker), categorized by type (Ballades, Preludes, etc.). This section, like the first, is amusing but not very helpful. The author never really goes into great depth about any single piece. Instead he simply says a word or two on mood or style, often quoting authorities such as Kullak and Niecks, and compares several major editions of the work. I would recommend this to someone very interested in editorial details... anyone else could probably do without most of this section.

People familiar with Chopin should find Huneker's writing somewhat enlightening, though far from substantial. Those looking for an introduction to Chopin may find the first section very helpful, if they can tolerate the author's verbosity.

                    1 out of 5 stars A waste of time.......2001-02-19

This book does not present much information about Chopin the man, and stumbles around endlessly about Chopin's music. The prose is laughably dated. Who can not help laughing at sentences like "Chopin distrusted Jews, but that's the way Poles are." The French, English, Germans, and Hungarians: Huneker comes up with some interesting stereotypes for them too. Many of the facts are incorrect, as the editor supplies the corrected facts in the footnotes on nearly every page of the text. And the music discussions have the spirit of "What a powerful melody! However, I believe the third note of the 14th measure of Etude 12 op. 10 should be an F sharp, though it's written differently in some scores." What a snore. I suggest looking elsewhere for real information about Chopin and his music. This book offers no insights though some occasional unintended laughs.

Who can count themselves learned in Chopin who has not read Huneker's wonderful, purple-prosy, unabashedly romantic examination of the Polish Master's music? If the musicology is a tad dated, the enthusiasm, the sheer love of music present on every page, are more evident than ever. This is absolutely essential reading for the Chopin lover.

4 out of 5 stars Best book on the music of Chopin that I have ever read........1998-10-11

Huneker was an aspiring concert pianist (as well as a brilliant writer), and his analysis of Chopin's music and poetry are simply amazing. Like Chopin, Huneker expresses from the heart and hears the music at a whole new level. His interpretation is raw and as full in energy as the music itself (especially for etude op.25 no.11 and the ballade no.1).

                            Book Description

Chopin, "subtle-souled psychologist," is more kin to Keats than Shelley, he is a greater artist than a thinker. His philosophy is of the beautiful, as was Keats', and while he lingers by the river's edge to catch the song of the reeds, his gaze is oftener fixed on the quiring planets. He is nature's most exquisite sounding-board and vibrates to her with intensity, color and vivacity that have no parallel. Stained with melancholy, his joy is never that of the strong man rejoicing in his muscles. -from "Poet and Psychologist" James Huneker describes Chopin's mazurkas as the music in which "the Pole suffers in song the joy of his sorrow." Such distinctive literary lyricism fills this classic 1900 life of the 19th-century French-Polish pianist and composer. After exploring the storied artistic circles in which Frédéric Chopin moved in Paris and his tempestuous relationship with the novelist George Sand, Huneker delves into the artistic psychology of his music, with in-depth analyses of Chopin's studies, many of which Huneker finds "poetic"; his preludes, which Huneker deems "moods in miniature"; and the "melancholy mysteries" of Chopin's nocturnes. A striking portrait of genius, Huneker captures an artist who was "pleasant" and "persuasive" in public and "a neurotic being" in private, and finds a composer whose music aches with "the pathos of spiritual distance." American arts critic JAMES HUNEKER (1860-1921) also wrote Iconoclasts: A Book of Dramatists (1905), Egoists: A Book of Supermen (1909), Franz Liszt: Illustrated (1911), and The Pathos of Distance (1912).

James Huneker made an praised essay around the different stages of Chopin's life as well an extensive, meticulous and detailed analysis about every one of his compositions. The way he analyzes and even collates this Polish composer reveals not only a deep engagement but besides a remarkable description supported by a poetic trait that stimulates still more the necessary reading.

                                      Book Description

Long before the 1970s and the feminist revolution that shattered traditional notions of the family, black women in America had already accomplished their own revolution. Bart Landry's groundbreaking study adds immeasurably to our accepted concepts of "traditional" and "new" families: Landry argues that black middle-class women in two-parent families were practicing an egalitarian lifestyle that was envisioned by few of their white counterparts until many decades later.
The primary transformation of the American family, Landry says, took place when nineteenth-century industrialization brought about the separation of home and workplace. Only then did the family we call traditional, in which the husband goes out to work while the wife stays at home, become the centerpiece of white middle-class ideology. Black women, excluded from this model of respectability, embraced a threefold commitment to family, community, and career. They embodied the notion that employment outside the home was the route to more equality in the home, and that work was worth pursuing for reasons other than economic survival.
With a careful and convincing mix of biography, historical records, and demographic data, Landry shows how these black pioneers of the dual-career marriage created a paradigm for other women seeking to escape the cult of domesticity and thus foreshadowed the second great family transformation. If the two-parent nuclear family is to persist beyond the twentieth century, it may be because of what we can learn from these earlier women about an ideology of womanhood that combines the private and public spheres.

                                      Book Description

As the world knows by now, Buffy Summers is just your average blond girl from Southern California, except for one minor detail-she's a Vampire Slayer. She is the one girl in her genera-tion chosen to rid the world of the pesky vampires, demons, and assorted evils lurking in her hometown of Sunnydale, California. When Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered in 1997, it was instantly beloved by critics. Almost as quickly, the show attracted a hugely loyal fanbase that hangs on the plot twists and whip-smart dialogue in every episode and then logs on to discuss them further. After six years, the show is more popular than ever. This new edition of The Girl's Got Bite is fully revised and updated through the seventh season, featuring all-new episode guides, cast biographies, Buffy trivia, and behind-the-scenes anec-dotes. Author Kathleen Tracy delivers new interviews with cast members including Anthony Stewart Head (Giles) and Emma Caufield (Anya), as well as Buffy creator Joss Whedon, and up-dates past interviews with other cast members, including Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy). The Girl's Got Bite is a juicy, must-have resource for any Buffy fan.

                                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2004-08-20

This is not a horrible book, but it is kept from being a really good book by two major failings.

The first problem is that the writing is just not terribly engaging. You can tell that Ms. Tracy is a journalist rather than a creative writer as her prose generally has very little sparkle. This would be forgivable if the information in the book were anything new, but any real fan of the show already knows 99.9% of everything in this book. I would still recommend it for new fans or fans who haven't read any of the official books, but...

Problem #2 is that the actual information is sometimes suspect. There are occasional misquotes from episodes and frequent faulty analyses of events in the series. I cannot speak for the factual information about the behind the scenes aspect of the show, but the info about the show itself is often a bit off. For example (***Show Spoilers ahead***), the author states that Spike is tricked by the demon who restores his soul. That he was actually looking to have the chip removed from his head. This idea has been refuted by Joss Whedon and, more importantly, by Spike himself in season 7 of Buffy and season 5 of Angel. This is just sloppy scholarship.

In short, I would only recommend this book to Buffy completists or to fans so obsessive that they need to find that 0.1% of new information that might be gleaned from this volume. :)

This was the first Buffy behind the scenes type book that I ever bought. So when I read it, I thought that it was quite good. The biographies included info I hadnt know, such as Charisma Carpenter was a cheerleader for the San Diego Chargers, and Sarah Michelle Gellar originally tried out for the role of Cordelia, but the history of vampires section is a little boring.

My favorite part of this book is the outtakes section in each episode. I loved watching the episodes with my book and seeing how something got screwed up. It was so much fun. It only goes through a little bit of 7th season which is deceiving from the cover.

I would recommend Bite Me before this book, but if you already have that, this would be a good one to buy.

It was good in the sense that, like the first edition, has sort of a biography of how "Buffy" came to be. It takes you step by step of the making of the original "Buffy" movie all the way to the seventh season. And like the first edition, it has a biography of the cast and characters - revised and updated - and the episode guide. It was good in the way that when you read various episodes, the author had included little notes and things about various demons and/or witches. It also has a brief history of the vampire, going from Anne Rice's version of the average vamp to Bram Stoker's vamps to even a few myths of them. That was what made it good.

It would've been great, however, if the author included all of Season Seven. The total episodes in the series is 144. The author only included 131 episodes. Whether or not she had a deadline, I don't know, but it would've been nice to see all the episodes included.

This is the first Buffy reference book that I have read and I have to say that I enjoyed it.I found it to be very detailed. The thing I enjoyed most was the complete listing of every song by every band that was played in every episode. It also provided the names of the cds the songs were on.I thought that was a nice touch. I discovered some good music from that.
I think all Buffy fans would find this book worthwhile.

3 out of 5 stars Not the Best Buffy Guide Ever..........2003-06-19

'The Girl's Got Bite' is the latest "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" guide to surface, but it's not all that great. First off, according to this site, the book is "Completely Revised and Updated Through Season Seven", which is not entirely true. The episode guide only goes through the ninth episode of the seventh season, "Never Leave Me", so anyone looking for anything beyond that should be warned that they're not going to get it.

This "Buffy" guide includes what most of the others do. There is an introduction that actually gives a history of the feature film that started it all. That is followed by descriptions of the series' characters, a history of the vampire, cast biographies and finally the episode guide. A majority of the 342 pages are the episode descriptions, which are okay except for one little thing that bothered me: season one's episode 11 is actually called "Out of Mind, Out of Sight", but they list it in this book as being called "Invisible Girl". Well, according to my season one DVD that is not correct.

As far as cast biographies go, they are the same here as they are everywhere else, so we don't learn anything new. This is the same with the character guide. As for the episode guide, since only 9 of the seventh season's episodes are featured, it is pretty pointless to even have them there. I would recommend the "Buffy" guide 'Bite Me', which contains an episode guide complete all the way through season six. I can guarantee that there will be another "Buffy" guide to come out in the future that will include all of season seven as well. Hopefully it will be a 'Watcher's Guide', which are the best of the "Buffy" guides in my opinion. The 'Watcher's Guides' and 'Bite Me' seem to contain more information to satisfy Buffy's biggest fans. So my advice is to just wait until another guide comes out. This is not a terrible book, but it just can't hold a candle to the other ones.

                                      Product Description

This textbook starts with a basic introduction to AutoCAD 2006 and then begins a house floor plan. Using step-by-step tutorial lessons, the residential project is followed through to create elevations, sections, details, etc. Throughout the project, new AutoCAD commands are covered at the appropriate time. Focus is placed on the most essential parts of a command rather than an exhaustive review of every sub-feature of a particular command.

This book is terrible. It misses steps, and makes you do stuff that you would never do in the real world, and the stuff you do in the real word it leaves out. For people who know how to use AutoCad it is more confessusing. Recommendation Do not buy, there are better books out there.

This is a great book for someone looking to learn Autocad. I had absolutely no previous knowledge of Autocad and have completed several floor plans using the program in a short time. It took me about a week to get through the tutorial (I spent a lot of time with it) but can now efficiently navigate the program and understand many of its functions.

As far as the tutorial goes, you start by creating some simple shapes and then items such as sinks, windows, and fixtures to get used to the commands. Then you start the floor plan of the home, draw the elevations, then the sectionals. Autocad is a very complex program and I would have been lost without a book to walk me through. It was perfect for someone who wanted to learn about residential design on their own
